View 2 RepliesI am running Windows 8.1. Originally I had Windows 8 installed on my machine and I updated to Windows 8.1. I have files that are corrupted and I intend refreshing my PC but the process involves inserting the installation disk. But the installation disk I have is for Windows 8.
Does that mean, after refreshing my PC, the operating system will be back to Windows 8 and I will have to download Windows 8.1. all over again? And would all my settings, documents and e-mail folders all be wiped out? If so, how do I make backups of these?
I got to the office yesterday and the PC, which I left running and working as usually, had in it's screen the common message saying the computer can't boot any device (strange since the computer was running and it's a message hat appears when booting). After trying to reboot it a couple of times, a message saying "...kernel... file is missing... try advance tools..." was shown. I tried to "refresh" the system.
Anyway, The thing is that after refreshing I have lost much more than the apps. The apps I can retrieve, It will take me half a day to retrieve almost all of the software, but doable. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE DATA??? I have two drivers on the PC, C: (software) and D: (data), and it looks as if my "D:" driver had been erased or something. I see it but I can't open it (properties say it's empty and before being opened has to be formatted). I don't get it....
Where is my data??? Whereis my driver?
I reset windows 8 on my alienware m15x for a fresh restart but it was taking too long and got stuck a 30% so I held down the power button. Next thing It says No Operating system detected.
View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter refreshing my Windows 8 PC (I did not realise all the problems it would cause like loosing my email ,some apps and some programs) , I tried a system restore but I can't get any restore points before the refreshing time to reset the PC as it used to be.
View 2 Replies View RelatedHow to fix the 'Desktop icons not refreshing' bug in 8.1 ?
It's weird because on first boot it works fine for a few hours, but then randomly decides to stop working, so by the afternoon/evening I have to start manually refreshing the desktop when I copy stuff to it, or the icons do not show up
Starting to get irritating so looking for a fix, seen a few reg fixes for Win 7 etc but doesn't seem to work for 8.1
So I upgraded to windows 8.1 a few weeks ago from 7 and I'm loving the performance boosts I get while playing games, the one thing that bugs me and it happens randomly, sometimes once a day, sometimes never happens at all for a day or two, sometimes it happens every couple hours.
What happens is that my taskbar will completely empty and then reload everything and my desktop will do the same, desktop background goes blank icons disappear and then suddenly wallpaper comes back and all my icons keep shifting all over the place between my two monitors.
I've also noticed if I have my taskbar set to my main monitor (left) when it refreshes like that it forces the taskbar to move to my secondary monitor (right).
What could be causing this issue? I do use Start8, but so far searching bugs on that nothing seems to show anything similar to what I'm getting and since it's happening to my desktop and not just the taskbar I've figured it has to be something with windows.
My PC specs are as follows:
i7 4770k
Gigabyte R9 280x
16GB G-Skill DDR3 1600
Also, how to remove this from popping up in the bottom right corners of my desktop?
[URL] ......
Also, how do I disable the being able to drag the top of my desktop down and resizes my desktop, so many times moving my icons around after they get rearranged and I accidentally change my desktop size...
In Win8.1, if app calls FE, e.g. Firefox for downloading a file, FE starts to refresh content of folder instead immediately showing it's content. This takes several seconds and I can see folders and files popping out of nowhere.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently have been having this issue where whenever I use the media keys (play, pause, rewind, and forward) and the volume keys on my quickfire pro it just refreshes my browser window. This has been happening recently and is very annoying.
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy mother-in-law has purchased a HP laptop with windows 8 which has since updated to 8.1 (and we think update 1 - there is nothing to say update 1 on it, but it does have a power icon on the tiles screen).
When a DVD (data or film) is inserted, the drive spins up - but not to full speed - and the icon in My Computer doesn't change to show the drive is no longer empty (or changed from a previous disc).
At one point, after installing a Canon printer, I switched out the install DVD for a film. As per usual, the icon did not update. I refreshed with [F5] but nothing changed. When I double clicked the drive icon, it opened up but showed the files from the install DVD and not the Film that was in the drive.
It even went as far as to open up on of the smaller files off the DVD that was no longer in the drive. As though it had cached it for some reason. It was only when I retried to run the setup executable did it poll the drive and find out there was a new disc in there and finally allowed us to watch the Film.
The film in this case was Life of Pi - we also tried Skyfall - both of which are off-the-shelf commercial DVD's and not home-brew DVD films.
Is there any setting that can be changed? I have changed the autoplay settings to ask everytime for everything but that had no effect.
Also I am experiencing slower start up when turning on my laptop. My Windows 8 msi laptop used to open in just a matter of seconds but now it takes 1 minute or two to load.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently bought a Windows 8 tablet and I'm forced to use IE10 on it to browse the Internet because everything else is crap. I like the idea how you can swipe to the left and right to go back and forth webpages. But when info that, instead of just loading the page from a cache, the page completely reloads. It doesn't even take me the correct location of the webpage. These issues completely take away the advantage of swipe navigation.
Is there anyway to force IE not to reload the webpage completely when swiping back (don't really care about forward part)? If I could set a time period before reloading the page, that would be ideal.
BTW, It could be more noticeable because this Atom based tablet is much slower than a typical Windows 8 PC. Besides, I don't use IE on the desktop so I don't know how it performs on it. I bet it won't be as noticeable as on the tablet because it is multiple times faster than the tablet and it is connected to he Internet with a cable.
Within the last month or so, shortcuts on the start menu haven't been refreshing when their respective icons actually change. This only pertains to 3rd party programs and games--not those downloaded from the Microsoft store or included in Windows by default. For example, Steam recently changed the design of their logo. This change was never reflected in the start menu.
There are at least several other apps, like the PortableApps launcher, that the same is happening to. I've actually had to go to the entry in appdata and completely remove them and re-add them to get the changes to show. Never had an issue with anything like this until relatively recently, though I can't place one particular event as being definitive. It may have been like this for even longer and I wouldn't have known until a few things updated anyway.
See system spec for details, as everything is up-to-date. It would be nice for software to update icons and have those changes reflected rather than having to add manually.
My laptop (Dell Inspiron 2013 64-bit) was playing up today and instead of restarting it, I foolishly clicked on the option to "refresh the pc". i know this would remove all my current programs. I decided then to do a System Restore. Now, all my programs are back, however, the majority of my programs such Firefox, Microsoft Office and such will not even open! I would just like to know if there is anyway to get these programs running again without having to reinstall them all? Furthermore, would I need to reset or refresh my pc as I can not uninstall old programs via Control Panel?
View 1 Replies View RelatedMetro Apps/Tiles Keep Refreshing To Default Settings?
I consider myself an advanced user, but I still overlook a lot of things and make mistakes like everyone.
Basically, Windows 8.1's Metro apps and tiles keep refreshing to default settings like it's the first time I've used them or opened them.
When I go to use Skype, it will always ask if it is allowed to use my webcam and microphone. It seems to remember the settings for a while, then forgets them.
I'm assuming this is CCleaner related, but I unchecked all of the settings that correspond to the Metro applications, and this changes nothing.
I'm unsure if I am actually deleting important information Windows needs without knowing. I usually delete logs on top of the usual things to keep my computer clean.
But I'm afraid there is not a setting in Windows 8 to get this done. Okay, then I handle the programs seperately! Until Windows 8 I could always rightclick a shortcut, then get "Properties", then I chose "Maximized". But to my unpleasant surprise I only get the latest documents (Which is very handy indeed!), and a choice to "Loosen the program of the taskbar".
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have many java programs that I use. I can make a shortcut to the desktop but is there a way I can copy these to the start menu (Metro). With programs it is easy - right click and it says pin to taskbar. With Java it seems not to be possible. There is no such option on the context menu.
I know you can not run Java in Metro but I'd like to invoke the JVM and my jar from the desktop - just like any other program. I've tried the jar and the shortcut but neither work.
In Windows 8, what does one need to do, so that when one creates a shortcut, it does not have "shortcut" added to the end of the name?
Of course one can rename the shortcut and delete that suffix, but simpler it they were not created that way from the outset.
I managed to stop that behavior in WinXP and Win7, but I forget how, and I don't know if it is done the same way in Windows 8 anyhow.
By the way, I do not mind the little arrow on shortcut icons, a little reminder that it is a shortcut (but no need for "shortcut" to be added to the name.)
Also, if I create a shortcut on my WinXP computer, it does not add a file extension. For instance, if I create a shortcut to a file named "program.exe", the shortcut in XP will just say "Program". On my Windows 8 computer though, the shortcut is called program.exe.shortcut.
I don't remember if it was that way in XP by default, or whether I did some tweak years ago. Although I do have Explorer set to show file extensions, I don't need a shortcut to include the extension, as well as no suffix "shortcut".
Is there a tweak in Windows 8 to have the default shortcut not include the word "shortcut" at the end, and not include the extension of the file linked to?
Windows 8. All I want to do is pin a desktop icon to the taskbar. I've gone to every app on this pc, right clicked, left clicked, middle finger clicked, nose clicked, no luck.
Don't want to over simplify, but wouldn't it be great if one of those computer guru's had thought of this instruction?
"To put a desktop short cut on the task bar, right click on desktop and select pin to taskbar" or "just drag that huge desktop icon in windows to the taskbar"?
When I try to add a shortcut to the start screen I get a message 'No such interface supported' When I install a new program or game it wont add the shortcut to the start menu even if I have ticked 'add shortcut to start menu. All games and programs run fine, I just cant add a shortcut. How to solve it?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI used to have a desktop shortcut on the taskbar so necessary for getting back there without wading through tons of open apps..
Now I cannot put a desktop shortcut on the taskbar have been trying and failing.
If I go to the start tile board and click desktop I just get back to the top open app and then have to minimise and minimise to get the desktop.
On my windows 7 taskbar to open a new window of windows explorer i just press the mouse middle scroll button and it opened a new windows.
It is not working in window 8. By the way I am using the start8 utility.
I really need to get this working as I have to open quite windows sometimes very quickly.
How do I add a programs shortcut to the start menu search? For an example: On Windows 7 when I installed Steam on my second hard drive, the Steam exe popped up when I searched "Steam" in the start menu search. When I went to Windows 8, it doesn't do this anymore because I didn't reinstall Steam because it's already on my second hard drive. How do I get it to pop back up in the search?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was able to do it in XP. I created a shortcut to system restore and put it on the Start Menu. So much easier than the way Windows 8 works. Wondering if there's a way to do the same in 8.1?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have Windows 8.1. I also use Start8 so my desktop looks like Windows 7. When I try and clean up the start menu, by deleting short cuts of programs I don't use, like metro apps (PC Settings & Store) once I delete these short cuts I can no longer access PC settings or Store. When I click PC settings in the Metro Menu it does nothing. Same with Store app. If I restore the deleted short cuts to these programs it works again. I've tried to hide these programs from the start menu but that option to hide is greyed out.
A; Hide these apps from the start menu without deleting them.
B. Delete them from the start menu but have them still work in the Metro Menu.
I need to make a short cut I can place on my desktop to switch to Metro view.
Is there any way to do this?
I have looked hard but can find no info on how to do this.
I do not want to use the keyboard short cut it must be a short cut OR a batch file.
I deleted theme in Start Menu folder.
