Apps / Software :: Any Way To Prevent Apps From Remaining Open
Dec 10, 2013
I found that whenever I open an app, such as 'Reader' they remain open even after I switch to something else. I know I could close them by swiping the upper left of the screen and select 'Close'.
Is there a way to have them close altogether when I'm done with them?
I offten play game online, and my network is not fast. So when I playing game, it's usually "lag". I think it is because the modern apps (mail, people, weather...) and other background services auto connect to internet. I can stop or turn off these background services, but I don't know how to turn off or prevent modern apps do that to improve the network speed.
In w 8.1 If I open an app within seconds it loses focus. It makes it very difficult to type ie in e mail, the only way to get focus is to left click the mouse within the app and the cursor comes back for a few letters then the cursor disapears again. So any time I make an app active it becomes inactive quickly. To make it active again I have to click on it with my mouse.
I have put irfanview as my default image viewers of all types all over the system.
However, when I am using irfanview on a particular image, I want some other app to open the other images that I am trying to open. For that I have installed FastStone Image Viewer, so I want FSView.exe to appear in my RightClick - Open With defaults so that I can select it.
However I try, windows 8 is always showing Irfanview Microsoft Office 2010 Paint Photos Windows Photo Viewer in that open with setting.
I have selected Faststone viewer a dozen time through disk, but it doesn't stick to the right click menu. Those names are always coming.
I don't want even to see 1. Microsoft Office 2010, 2. Photos, 3. Windows Photo Viewer in that list, I just don't want to use these three programs to ever open any of my images.
So I want, 1. irfanview, 2. paint, 3. Faststone viewer to appear in my rightclick openwith list.
How do I do it. I have tried control panel - Default programs. I have downloaded and run Default Programs Editor.exe mentioned elsewhere in this forum, but they don't give any option to "delete" there options of rightclick menu that keep on appearing.
Windows 8 seems to detect my Xbox 360 and it automatically installs the SmartGlass app. While I quite like what SmartGlass can do, I have no need for it. If I uninstall it, it will just auto-install again next time I use my 360. How can I prevent this from happening?
I was wondering, am I able to use the Applocker to prevent this from occurring? I can sadly not give a screeny of this... because if the message appears, there seems to be no way to get rid of it, but making a new local account?
I've been using Windows 8.1 x64 version for a long while now and it was all good ..
until today when I was playing Football Manager 2014 for the first time and it gave me a BSOD during the first match ..
after restarting the windows logged into a "Temporary account" and my main account was corrupted by the problem ..all metro apps won't open .. even the "PC Settings" !they just "crash on startup"
I have just bought a new laptop which came with Windows 8 preinstalled. I have since updated to 8.1 Pro with Media Center and so far, touch wood, things appear to be running well.
Having used Windows 7 for ages, I found the change to 8 somewhat difficult but I am slowly figuring it out. There will undoubtedly be things I cannot sort for myself but straight off the bat I have one question:
Where can I change a setting to stop in 8.1 from automatically going on line and downloading stuff I don't want? I do not want to prevent automatic downloading of Windows Updates etc, but I have just turned on and been greeted with a message telling me that Windows has downloaded 9 new apps - Alarms, Calculator, Food & Drink, Health & Fitness, Tips, Reading List, Scan, Sound Recorder, Bing Desktop, and MS Silverlight (yes, I know, this is 10!)
I particularly want to keep this new Laptop free of unnecessary software which I will never use, basically all I want is Word, Excel, email capability, the ability to view TV (when away from home, hence the upgrade to 'Pro with Media Center') but little else. I will soon be abandoning my home cable internet connection and will be relying on a much reduced plan and so will not want the limited data used up because the O/S automatically loads the computer with rubbish.
I not used some of the Apps in a while and went to use the Music, Weather and News App in Windows 8.1 and they will not open and it says to check the Windows store. I checked the store and alll it says is i own these apps. I then next uninstalled these 3 apps and then re-installed them but i am getting the same and cannot open them.
I can't seem to open any off my apps from the start menu. When I open an app, the app closes back but is available at the sidewindow(?). It doesn't load or anything. When I click it, the app sort of minimizes to the sidewindow(?).
So I've been lurking around and one of the problems that I thought was happening to me is that I do not have the temporary internet files. C -> Users -> My Name -> AppData -> Local. I read that it should have a windows folder in the local folder and a temporary internet files in the windows folder.
I changed my local user to the microsoft account and then changed back to the local user using another username so that might affect these change in my pc.
I have a new laptop some of the apps have stopped opening .. I have checked the resolution and is ok .i have checked for updates but still can't get them to open .
Reinstalled windows 2 times and then made a back up image, which I have to keep reverting to because my PC Settings and Windows apps (which I don't even use) will stop opening and display the "This app can't open please refresh" pop up. This is for windows 8.1, I'm assuming that's cool on this site?
Ive noticed since I installed windows 8.1 none of my apps have been working I figured this is because I left the installer running over night and my laptop might of turned off before finishing the installation so it might be corrupt didnt think much of it at the time since I never really used the apps but now I want to system restore my laptop and the PC settings app wont open like the rest of my apps I click on the tile and it opens for 1-2 seconds then takes me back to the home screen. :C
I just completed a virus and malware removal session over in that forum. The computer is working great except that when I open games or music or camera they open then close and put an icon at the bottom of the screen. I use desk top view. The only game loaded is Microsoft solitare I have never used music or camera.

I just downloaded Google's Picasa photo sharing app on windows 8. The app will only open when in my administrator profile. how can I open this app in other profiles.
Maybe it's just me that this annoys but i hope there is a setting that can be changed to fix it. In Windows 8/8.1 if you try to open an app that is already open it does nothing.
Example: 1. Click start >> Type MSTSC >> Press Enter and connect to a remote computer/server. 2. Do the same again (not on the remote computer/server) >> you will notice after hitting Enter that it doesn't open the Remote Desktop dialogue.
It will either go back to the desktop or open the original remote connection. It is the same with any application (Excel, Word...)
It didn't work that way in 7, it would open a new instance of that application is there any way to change this?
I've got a problem of mass scale. My Windows 8.1 Store refuses to load. Whatever I do, it doesn't start up. I had to get to an app with compatibility problems and get to the store in that way, but also that doesn't work anymore.
Other than the one putting a big line in the cmd (one of the first & only real solution I could find).
I have been using a program called Family Tree Legends for years now, but just recently when I try to open the program I receive the following message: "This program has been damaged, possibly by a bad sector of the hard drive or a virus. Please reinstall it." I have removed the program and reinstalled it several times and it still won't work. It's a family tree program that I used almost daily and now I'm concerned I lost everything. I even tried to open the program via the administrator function but it still won't work.
I can't open any windows metro app except internet explorer. I have used AppsDiagnostic.diagcab and it only shows that I have an outdated visual driver (I do not, I'm simply not using windows' own driver) and that I might have corrupted files (I already used chkdsk and nothing was picked up).
How do you want to open this type of file (.psd)?I'm choosing more options and picking photoshop as the default app, but nothing is happening. The same things happens to .torrent files, only works if i have the program open and drags the file into the program.
Files it happens with: .psd .torrent .mobi And the files are blank.
A few weeks ago I noticed that none of my tiles showed their little icons, like the gear for the Settings tile, etc. I clicked on the weather tile, and it brought up the screen like it was loading for a split second, but then brought me back to my desktop. Some of the time it doesn't even try to bring up the loading screen, it just immediately returns me to the desktop. Also, I just tried to screen shot the tiles page, but nothing happened. I can't screen shot my desktop either. I don't know if this is possibly related, I have not tried to screen shot anything lately.
I bought a new notebook with Windows 8 and upgrade to 8.1, and i also install a new Windows 8.1 in a new computer 3 days ago... and both of my Windows don't open the apps on the first screen.. like Skype, email, windows store....
The apps almost start, show the program name on the screen them close.. The problem is that is happening on both computers....
