I bought a new notebook with Windows 8 and upgrade to 8.1, and i also install a new Windows 8.1 in a new computer 3 days ago... and both of my Windows don't open the apps on the first screen.. like Skype, email, windows store....
The apps almost start, show the program name on the screen them close.. The problem is that is happening on both computers....
i have a problem with my windows 8 . all my apps on my start screen cant open.. Its say that This apps can't open check window store for more information and gt a little X at the top right of the all apps..

Since updating to 8.1 my apps don't open in start screen.. I click on the app..the screen goes directly to the desktop and the blank app screen sits in the desktop tool bar. I can't open any of the programs. I have a Gateway ZX6980 ..
View 1 Replies View RelatedI don't know if this is a Windows issue or just an issue with my software but I was using Corel Paint shop pro x6 and I'm not sure what I did but after opening files or using the save to option several times, all of a sudden the window started opening full screen and there doesn't seem to be any way to minimize it.
I tried to see if I could at least drag it some place but it won't move. I tried going to every side and corner to see if I could resize it that way but nothing happens. This is the only program that opens my folders in full screen so perhaps it has nothing to do with Windows but how I can get my folders to open in a small screen where you can move them over or out of the way of something you might be looking at.
I have a Lenovo G505s AMD A8 Laptop, fairly new to Windows 8 as this is my first platform running it. Not had the system long, but generally finding it ok except for this one problem thats decided to arise:
All apps, including the Windows Store fail to launch when clicked. They display a splash screen but no loading symbol, the splash screen hangs for about a minute and then the whole app shuts off again. This started with the calculator from what I can see, but now it seems to affect all of them. I've tried multiple theories from several forums and sites but nothing has made a difference.
If possible I don't want to have to refresh or reinstall Windows 8 as I have a fair amount of software I've installed and don't want to have to go through installation all over again.
I'm trying to keep the windows 8 start screen open on one screen and have the other open to the desktop, but any time I click an app on the desktop the 2nd screen with the Windows 8 start screen minimizes. Is there any way to change this behavior?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a Sony Vaio Pro 13 laptop, running Windows 8.1. If I have a couple of Excel spreadsheets open, close the laptop lid, leave it a minute or so, then re-open the lid, the screen momentarily goes dark, then comes to life again. All open apps are OK with the exception of the Excel sheets. In these, all the cells (& ribbon) are unviewable. The whole worksheet area on the screen is not the normal cells but a screen full of whatever colour I set for the default ribbon colour (some kind of beigy grey...). You can't click on any of the cells, can't see what's in them etc... you CAN close the sheet using the window close x at top right (even though you can't actually see the x) but that's all.
I have set up Windows so that NO ACTION is taken on closing the lid. It seems to be the same problem as described at hibernate - Excel windows invisible when laptop comes back from sleep - Super User but no working solution is available. (The one on this link refers to clicking 'restore' but that doesn't work) Running Excel 2013 (part of Office 2013).
I'm stuck as to what may be causing this... but I guess it should be an Excel problem since other apps (e.g. Word) don't exhibit this problem, but that may be a function of what's open at the time the lid is closed / re-opened?

I can get to the start menu through charms and I can access My Pc from there but opening control panel hangs as well. I am also unable to get to the troubleshooting and repair.
I have tried to restart and press and hold the shift key but it just hangs again when restarting, also tried to log out of my profile but that also hangs.

I tried to use location on the Bing weather app and it was over 100 miles out. Couldn't figure out how to solve this so uninstalled it.
Then I did something obviously stupid, I did a restore. I thought that by 'all apps' WIndows 8 did not mean programs, but it evidently does (a slight rewrite would make that clearer to those of us who don't identify all apps as including programs).
Ok, I had to reinstall programs, a nuisance but that's all. However, all my Bing apps are now gone.
They appear in 'Your apps' in the store as in my computer named DOUGW-PC but a search doesn't find them. Reinstalling doesn't do anything either. I can install new apps and they show up fine.
I have a Windows RT tablet so all my apps are pretty much in the metro/modern UI.
Is there a way to quickly close all open apps? Right now I have to swipe down on each app.
I not used some of the Apps in a while and went to use the Music, Weather and News App in Windows 8.1 and they will not open and it says to check the Windows store. View 5 Replies View RelatedI can't seem to open any off my apps from the start menu. When I open an app, the app closes back but is available at the sidewindow(?). It doesn't load or anything. When I click it, the app sort of minimizes to the sidewindow(?).
So I've been lurking around and one of the problems that I thought was happening to me is that I do not have the temporary internet files. C -> Users -> My Name -> AppData -> Local. I read that it should have a windows folder in the local folder and a temporary internet files in the windows folder.
I changed my local user to the microsoft account and then changed back to the local user using another username so that might affect these change in my pc.
In w 8.1 If I open an app within seconds it loses focus. It makes it very difficult to type ie in e mail, the only way to get focus is to left click the mouse within the app and the cursor comes back for a few letters then the cursor disapears again. So any time I make an app active it becomes inactive quickly. To make it active again I have to click on it with my mouse.

However, when I am using irfanview on a particular image, I want some other app to open the other images that I am trying to open. For that I have installed FastStone Image Viewer, so I want FSView.exe to appear in my RightClick - Open With defaults so that I can select it.

I have selected Faststone viewer a dozen time through disk, but it doesn't stick to the right click menu. Those names are always coming.
I don't want even to see 1. Microsoft Office 2010, 2. Photos, 3. Windows Photo Viewer in that list, I just don't want to use these three programs to ever open any of my images.
So I want, 1. irfanview, 2. paint, 3. Faststone viewer to appear in my rightclick openwith list.
How do I do it. I have tried control panel - Default programs. I have downloaded and run Default Programs Editor.exe mentioned elsewhere in this forum, but they don't give any option to "delete" there options of rightclick menu that keep on appearing.
I found that whenever I open an app, such as 'Reader' they remain open even after I switch to something else. I know I could close them by swiping the upper left of the screen and select 'Close'.
Is there a way to have them close altogether when I'm done with them?

Prior to upgrade i had no issues whatsoever with the windows 8, before the upgrade i ran the Windows 8.1 Upgrade Assistant. And found only 3 softwares to have conflict with the upgrade, these 3 are as followed: Apple QuickTime, iTunes and Bitdefender Total Security - Version 17.15.0.68. I uninstalled both of the apple software's and upgraded the Bitdefender to a version compatible with Windows 8.1.
I had no issues with the download & installation of windows 8.1, however the instant between windows loading screen and the switch to user log in screen is blank/black for a good 3 minutes, if not more. Normally after the shut down screen the computer would power off completely, however now my computer screen is blank/black and the computer is still powered on for about 10-15 minutes, I know that it is on as all the fans/HDD LED are active. This time fluctuates and I'm not sure why. I've checked with windows update and no updates are available, all of my softwares (and third party applications) are up to date. On Microsoft Community forum and so on, all i can say is that there are many others experiencing a issue only with a blinking cursor and their circumstances are different so i don't believe its related.
I've updated my BIOS to the current version and my display driver and chipset are up-to-date, all drivers offered on the asus website, i even installed the realtek sound driver which i wasn't using previously. Reset BIOS, removed battery for CMOS, removed all components 1-by-1, ran CHKDSK no problem found, only standard keyboard/mouse/display connected, no change whatsoever!
I've tried safe mode and its the same, only the transition to logging in and shutting down have improved slightly. Tried clean boot at the result was the same. Checked the WER and found a lot of this "DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE 0x0000009f". I've already run the SF diagnostic tool and will load the zip file here. I rather not do a clean install of windows 8 and I'm not sure if restoring my pc to windows 8 before the upgrade will resolve the issue if it is driver related.
I'm in the middle of a struggle with blank screen issue, possibly corrupted exlorer.exe file (won't run). Wanted to try update from 8-8.1 but the Windows Store won't show up with the blank screen issue. Any thoughts on resolutions? I've done several malware, adware scans and antivirus scans. Everything comes back clear. Also, tried adding a new user acct, but get an error message and can't add. Thought the update might replace the needed files. SFC scan return non-fixable errors.

View 4 Replies View RelatedOn windows 8 internet explorer used to open up as an app on the windows start screen. Today, I decided to download firefox to improve speed. However, I found that firefox only opened in 'desktop' and I couldn't work out how to open it as an app, like I did with internet explorer. I uninstalled firefox and repinned explorer to start screen and toolbar and reset it as default only to find it too wouldn't open on start screen now, coming up with the message shown by the image. . I know it's not a problem with the internet because if I wrench it onto the desktop it works perfectly. Why won't the internet work on the startscreen? How can I fix it?

After upgrading, these apps have disappeared. I like to be able to boot up to the desktop and immediately see what the weather forecast is. The computer is working great except that when I open games or music or camera they open then close and put an icon at the bottom of the screen. I use desk top view.
