I have just upgraded to Windows 8.1. In Windows 8 I had three apps appearing on my desktop (Currency Rates, Weather and another one). After upgrading, these apps have disappeared. I like to be able to boot up to the desktop and immediately see what the weather forecast is. So far I haven't been able to work out how to get the apps permanently onto the desktop. Can it be done?
View 5 RepliesMy problem is ever since I installed windows 8.1 upgrade my desktop short cuts no longer work. Not even the ones under the new start button. I have to manually go into the programs folder, find the program I want to use and launch it from there. Every time I attempt to launch it through the start button or the desk top my win zip program pops up like it wants to unzip it. It never did this until I I upgraded to 8.1 I wished now I would of made a restore point before upgrading so I could get rid of this god awful 8.1. It has my PC totally messed up in trying to launch programs now.
Also, I suspect the new skydrive has something to do with it since the skydrive folder opens after the win zip program pop's up. I never used skydrive before and to be honest I really don't like it nor do I want it. I feel like it got shoved onto me.
The images shows what happens when I try to access something from the new start button, but I get the same problem if I have a desk top short cut. Surprizingly the control pannel and windows defender still works on the desk top, it's the only thing that does.
I am using windows 8.1 RTM version.
I cannot find my desktop tile or the store app anymore. I have tried searching with the search charm too. I checked various users and they are not there either. Some desktop programs have gone missing too
my wife's computer exper. several problems at once.
1. her favorites disappeared from ie
2. icons disappeared from desktop- ex.- system mechanic
3. some of her pictures are gone
My win 8 start screen (tiles screen)has an Internet Explorer tile but my desktop mode shows no I.E. icon at all.
Is there a way to add the start screen I.E. tile, to my desktop from the start screen?

I had the I.E. icon on my toolbar screen up until about a week ago and it disappeared.
My desktop picture button has disappeared from my start menu. Is there a way to put the desktop picture button back in the start menu ? I noticed that i can bring up a desktop button by hovering the mouse pointer on the lower left corner but that is lame. I just want my desktop picture button back . also is there any way to have windows 8 open on the desktop ? I do not want to deal with the endless stupid steps required just to open the computer . first i have to raise the unnecessary full screen picture . then i have to type in my password . ( i do not want to type in my password because i am the only person who ever uses my computer and if someone else did i wouldn't care anyhow ) . then i get to the start menu which is filled with buggy programs that never work and now my desktop button has mysteriously disappeared .
I would like for windows 8 to have the option to simply open on my desktop without me doing anything . no password . no start menu . no full screen picture that i have to raise ( what is that thing for ? ) . I realize that the windows 8 start menu and password stuff is mainly due to the people who will use windows 8 with tablets and smart phones etc . but i only use my regular ( rather old ) desktop pc . the password screen and buggy start menu are totally unnecessary and a pita . Give windows 8 desktop users the option of booting the computer up to the desktop screen and bypassing all the other wasted steps . i do not want to use the apps on the start menu . i do not need to enter a password because i do not care if anyone uses the pc. And why did my desktop button disappear from the start menu which i do not even need?
I resized the main partition of the c drive and after the reboot something strange happened. I do have a mouse cursor but the screen is black. No metro, no regular desktop, nothing there. When I do control alt delete I get into task stuff and from there I can logon or log off users but all have the same result, a Black screen with only a mouse c cursor. No hardware changes done. Tried to do an auto repair but no result.
View 9 Replies View RelatedLots of my apps deleted themselves without me doing anything, and some other (the Microsoft ones: weather, bing news etc, plus Flipboard) are just broken. When I try to open them, there's a page of the color of the app (red for news, light blue for weather......) without the app's logo and then it comes back to start screen.
I also tried to download them again from the store, and this is what happen. Under the "instal" button there's a message: "You already have this app. You can download to this computer", which it's ok, but if I click on Install, notification appears on the top right; tapping on it doesn't do anything, and the app isn't in the app folder. When I uninstalled and re-installed Weather (which wasn't disappeared, but broken) the app worked again.
The only "weird" thing that I remember I have done is to empty the bin, as I had memory full and wanted to gain some space.
Do you think this can be a malware? I already tried to open a new account, and it works just fine.
Calendar app has 'disappeared' ! Calendar app tile remains, but only leads back to the main start screen. Had lots posted in the calendar !!
View 5 Replies View RelatedYesterday I was watching a video on YouTube no problems when all of a sudden it shut down and didn't want to load back up, after clicking the shortcut on the desktop a dialogue window popped up saying that 'this program isn't in this location' (or something similar) and if I wanted to delete the shortcut. Thinking nothing much of it I rebooted my machine.
After rebooting, some of my tiles were missing and the rest of the tiles had a small black 'X' on the corner, I couldn't open any of my apps and searching for them resulted in the icon popping up in the charms bar but was unable to open them. Literally 20 seconds later all of the tiles disappeared, the charms bar stopped working and the whole screen looked completely blank.
One more reboot later and I have no tiles on the main start screen, no tiles when I swipe down to all apps, no search results for control panel or task manager, the charms bar works but all I can do is access my WiFi network, volume and screen or search.
The tablet is a Dell Latitude 10 ST2.

I am running Windows 8.1 I am not sure why this is happening but on my Tile screens the icons all disappeared, and now rectangles.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI Upgraded Windows 7 Home Premium 64 to Windows 8 Pro. Windows 8 now boots to the "Start Page" then a couple seconds later goes to the Desktop. This isn't something I configured it just does it. I do have Start8 from Stardock installed but it isn't configured to go to the desktop on boot either.
How I can stop this behavior and have Windows 8 stay at the Start Page on Boot?
My upgrade from 7 Pro to 8 Pro was smooth.
I tried to use location on the Bing weather app and it was over 100 miles out. Couldn't figure out how to solve this so uninstalled it.
Then I did something obviously stupid, I did a restore. I thought that by 'all apps' WIndows 8 did not mean programs, but it evidently does (a slight rewrite would make that clearer to those of us who don't identify all apps as including programs).
Ok, I had to reinstall programs, a nuisance but that's all. However, all my Bing apps are now gone.
They appear in 'Your apps' in the store as in my computer named DOUGW-PC but a search doesn't find them. Reinstalling doesn't do anything either. I can install new apps and they show up fine.
I wanted to know if is it possible to switch between modern ui (as it is by default) and desktop apps, all in the same left pane in Windows 8.1?

Only some of my desktop apps are listed. Can I edit the list? Likewise, if I sort by name, the first group of apps includes only a subset of all my apps - can I edit that list?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've found that on my Windows 8 64-bit PC whenever I try to install a new version of iTunes it always gives me an error. The only way to upgrade to the latest version is to uninstall iTunes completely, reboot, then install the new version of iTunes. Could it be because I'm running the 64-bit version of Windows? It's kind of annoying completely uninstalling iTunes just to upgrade to the new version but it's not a huge issue.

I have a new Dell laptop running Windows 8.1 Core Edition. After only a week I found most of the apps would crash to the Desktop on opening. I thought I had solved the problem by creating a new user account and reinstalling the apps but that only worked for a week before the same problem reappeared.
This is what I have discovered to date:

The problem appears to be due to access rights and priveliges in user accounts since the apps work in other accounts or if I create a new account.
Where the apps are located for each user account and whether there is way of checking that they are set up to have the correct access rights and privileges.
I open up my Live tiles screen on my 2nd monitor. When I open an app, say facebook. All is fine. When I drag from top of screen to bottom with my mouse to close the app, it goes to desktop. Is there a way for me to go back to the Live tiles screen?
Also, is it possible to have the live tiles screen visible all times on my 2nd monitor. I use Stardocks Start8.
I have a sony vaio laptop which came with a pre-installed windows 8 OS. I recently upgraded it to windows 8.1. After the upgrade, I have observed that many softwares that are actually installed on the system are not listed in the apps list, such as Microsoft office, autocad, freemake, etc. It becomes really inconvenient to open any new file of these software.

My problem is that the Store shows that the Music and Video apps both have updates but they both error out on install with 0x80073cf1 and 0x80246007 errors respectively.
Trying to fix it I have tried the following:sfc /scannow finds nothing wrongDISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth tells me "The restore operation completed successfully. The component store corruption was repaired. The operation completed successfully."And running Troubleshooting from the Control Panel on the Windows Update option quickly results in a "Windows Update components must be repaired" and "Fixed" with a friendly green checkmark. But the errors remain whenever I try again.
All of a sudden, whenever I open an app on Windows 8 Start menu (click on a tile), the website and/or program opens the desktop. I lost the ability to view open apps by clicking on the top of the page. The web search toolbar on the bottom of the page has also disappeared. Did I change something I wasn't aware of?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI upgraded my Acer Aspire One netbook from Win 8 Pro to Win 8.1 via the Store. The upgrade went smoothly and it appears that my files and installed apps are all intact. However, IE 11 can't access the internet, can't display any web page. FireFox and Chrome work fine. Metro apps (including the Store) report that they can't find a connection to the internet and tell me to make sure my computer is connected.
I can access shares on my network although Windows Explorer reports that I am not connected to a network.
I've tried wired as well as wireless connection to my router with no difference. I tried turning off/on the Firewall.
I tried running netsh winsock reset from a command prompt and restarting which had no effect.
Yesterday, I clean-installed Windows 8 Pro x86 on an old Dell Vostro 1400 laptop which had been running Windows 7 Ultimate, and it activated and ran fine, without even a single exclamation point in Device Manager. I applied the update necessary to make the Store offer 8.1 and proceeded to install it as I've done on a couple other machines. After downloading the thing, it errored out with:
Couldn't install Windows 8.1
Contact your PC manufacturer to see if you can upgrade the System BIOS
When I clicked the OK button, it then gave me the informative and grammar-challenged error box:
Something happened and the Windows 8.1 couldn't be installed. Please try again. Error code: 0xc1900104

Ever the optimist, I clicked Try again, and of course, it proceeded to download all over again from scratch, only to error out in the same way. I then downloaded all the Windows 8 updates, although just the one had been necessary on my other machines that successfully upgraded to 8.1, and tried again, only to get the same result.
Today, I've discovered the Windows 8.1 Compatibility Assistant, which avoids the lengthy download of the upgrade every time (Microsoft, maybe you should run it implicitly before downloading 3 GB of transient data), and it tells me:
This PC doesn't meet system requirements
Contact your PC manufacturer to see if you can upgrade the System BIOS
Obviously, no BIOS updates are available, and what exactly is the problem here with my BIOS. The obvious googling turned up nothing except some people with Sony Vaios that had the same problem, which was corrected with a BIOS update, and of course, there is no information on what their BIOS update does to make the 8.1 upgrade possible.
If I start a program (Photoshop, Firefox, for example) from the Start Screen the Desktop appears and the program loads on top of the Desktop, and when the program closes I am left with the Desktop not the Start Screen. Is this normal Windows 8 behaviour? (I have only just acquired Windows 8 and it is taking some time getting used to it!!) Is there a setting which will allow me to start a program from the Start Screen and return to the Start Screen when I close the program, ie allow me to bypass the Desktop (unless I choose deliberately to go to it)?
