Maintenance :: Windows 8.1 - Defrag On SSD
Aug 3, 2013Installed 8.1 some 2 weeks ago (give or take).
Now today i wanted to look to my 2 external spindle drives if defrag had run and it did run......BUT also on my Samsung SSD's which i never do myself.
Windows 8 erroneously defrags SSDs, indeed. Doesn't look like it's been fixed in Windows 8.1.
Why Windows 8 defragments your SSD and how you can avoid this.
Windows 8.1 Upgrade - RAID5 ReFS Volume Has Not Been Recognized
Oct 30, 2013Have finished upgrading to Windows 8.1 and my RAID-5 ReFS volume has NOT yet been recognized. It was not available in "This PC" after the upgrade... and was still not available after using the ReFS registry hack. After applying the hack and restarting the computer, the only change was the System Reserved portion of my C drive became visible.
Under Administrative Tools> Computer Management> Disk Management, the drives in question are visible as a single RAID-5 volume but Status shows "failed", the file system entry is empty, and the drive letter is absent showing a red "x" icon.
Currently downloading the latest chipset, SATA AHCI, and graphics drivers for my mobo. Will update once those have been installed.
Maintenance :: Windows 8.1 - Can't Defrag Truecrypt Drive
Feb 24, 2014Windows 8, but I've updated my box to Windows 8.1. I have a 250Gb Truecrypt file as my 'Documents stash' which I mount as a separate drive.
On Win 7 I could defrag this but on 8.1 the drive is greyed out not giving me chance to defrag it.

Oct 28, 2013I tried to upgrade to windows 8 through the store and if failed horribly, the pc refused to boot a an error code I that don't remember so I decided to wipe everything and install Windows 8.1 from a usb drive. Everything was fine for the past week and a half until 2 days ago when the disk defragmentation tool decided to stop working, I ran the tool many times after installing 8.1 and it has always worked but now I get a 0x80070057 error which should mean that the size of my partition is wrong. I did a chkdsk /r /f that took 2 hours to complete and it didn't find any errors and I also ran a sfc /scannow with no luck.

After spending some time googling for the issue I found out that there are many Windows 8.1 users with the same issue and on the microsoft forums no one seems to be able to fix this. From what I understand this seems to be related to the size values of the partition which according to the defragger are wrong but the tool was working before and I didn't edit the partition in any way.

My Disk Defragmenter that came with the system will not open. When I try to open it, a CMD windows appears for 1 second and disappears. I have tried opening it in all ways.
I have tried:
Safe Mode
Sfc /Scannow
Chkdsk
Anti Malware scans
I need something like the answer for this question, only a way to do it in Windows 8. His instructions only work on Windows 7.

Maintenance :: Samsung Magician Has Stopped Defrag?
Mar 23, 2013I am running Win 8 Pro.
My set up has 2 x 650 GB WD Black hard drives and a Samsung 840 (non pro) for the boot drive.
I have run the latest Samsung Magician, however the BIG problem is that it has stopped the windows 8 Defrag program.
I reinstalled Win 8 and all was OK, (now for the bit about me being thick -- ) I thought I would try the old version of Samsung Magician, and Bu**er me if has not only done the same thing again, turned off defrag and optimize, I am just unable to open defrag in order to defrag my WD drives.
I do not really want to reinstall Windows 8 again unless I have to, so how to switch defrag bag on again.

Jun 4, 2014It seems that Windows 8.1 Pro's scheduled defrag is consolidating free space, which is taking forever on one of my 2 TB data drives, which has about 300 GB free space. I stopped it at about 9%, and dfrgui immediately showed it as "OK (0% fragmented)". Clicking its Optimize button resulted in the defrag phase completing almost immediately, but then it was back to consolidating free space, starting at 5% this time. According to Task Manager, it's read/writing about 40 MB/sec, and the Active Time is over 90%. I really don't want this to go on for hours and hours and potentially repeat itself during future scheduled scans. Is it possible to alter this behavior, or should I just disable the weekly defrag task?

Do I just let Windows perform its' normal defrag routine as I normally would, or do I need to download some kind of proprietary software from Seagate that will do it? I like to use 3rd party software (UltimateDefrag) for my defrag operations, is all. And how much can I fill it up before it starts to slow down? I ask because I've heard that you cant fill an SSD up past around 50 to 60% or so before it slowly starts to degrade, since it needs room to perform its' TRIM (defrag) operations. Is this also true of SSHDs?

Nov 7, 2013i recently got a new laptop "asus vivobook" that came preloaded with windows 8.
The laptop comes with a hybrid 24 GB ssd (8GB of those are for the system files,windows 8 is installed on,the remaining are in a 2nd partition for recovery) i deleted the recovery partition and made a recovery on an 8 GB usb drive,because im dual booting a different linux os alongside windows.
I used rEFInd boot manager to boot the 2 operating systems,everything boot and works fine.
However,since the dual booting started i noticed that the windows 8 loading time has became a bit slower,when i choose to sart windows 8 the asus logo appears and under it this message
"Scanning and repairing volume (?Volume{...large hex identifier..}): 100% Complete"
it stays for 2,3 seconds and then windows 8 start,i ran a chkdsk for the c drive,but that didnt solve the problem.

Jul 7, 2014I have been noticing recently, my C drive gets occupied fully even if there are no bigger programs installed.
Out of 150gb, after uninstalling few programs, the space left was 30gb. Day by day it started decreasing and i saw 20gb today.
I used the disk cleanup tool and it shows only 100mb after selecting all fields.
I was worried still that space was not freeing and ran this program WinDirStat. Here are the screenshots.
System Volume information folder occupies 75% of space - meaning 100gb.
There are lot of files which were around 1gb - 2gb and they are created from 2013.
why 100 gb? I read that this service is important but why is it taking this much of space.. remove these unwanted older files if any.
I tried below options after googling and also searching in this forum:
Used disk clean up tool and selected more options > system restore and shadow copies > deleteDisabling and Enabling System restoreDeleting shadow copies through VSSAdmin Delete Shadows commandVirus scan in System Volume Information folder (after taking ownership of that folder) through Kaspersky and ESET SSManual delete of the files.Selecting delete option in System Protection > ConfigureChanging maximum usage to some x%
I have tried all these methods but still those files are existing.

Sep 15, 2014About two weeks ago I turned my laptop on and everything went blank, it couldn't read my drives, no data, nothing. After rebooting it a few times (with a lot of swearing and threatening to chuck it out of the window) eventually everything came back.
HOWEVER, since that night I have been unable to have a stable wireless connection. I have even reset my laptop to a factory setting. I then sent it away to get repaired and I'm still having the same issue. I've spent about two hours on the phone with my ISP but all of my other devices such as phone and iPad connect to the internet fine, although it does drop randomly every now and then.
I have a perfect connection when it is wired and works at a very good speed but if I try to connect to wifi it either says 'Unable to connect to this network' or 'limited' internet connection. My wifi also works to my ps3 and I'm able to stream videos without any annoying buffering.
The make is Lenovo and the model is Z580. It's about a year and a half old.
Is my wifi card (if there is one?!) broken? Can I just buy a USB port dongle that will connect to the internet? Or is there a magical cure?!

Oct 20, 2013I recently updated from Windows 8 Pro to Windows 8.1 using Microsoft update. After the update was completed, I've started to have problems connecting to the internet using a wired connection. NOTHING else has changed since the update. If I reboot, it works for less than 30 minutes and then the connection switches to "limited connectivity" with no way to revert it back to the usual status. If I reboot the computer, it works fine again for a little bit. Oddly enough, if I connect the computer to the exact same router using wireless, it does not seem to be dropping the connection.
I'm using a Dell Studio XPS 8100 with the factory Broadcom Netlink Gigabit Ethernet adapter.
So far, I have: disabled, reenabled the device (PC seems to hang when I do this as well) reinstalled the drivers after removing them verified there is no proxy or weird DNS settings setup on the connection.

Jan 13, 2014I've just upgraded from windows 8 to windows 8.1, via the Windows Store. Prior to upgrade i had no issues whatsoever with the windows 8, before the upgrade i ran the Windows 8.1 Upgrade Assistant. And found only 3 softwares to have conflict with the upgrade, these 3 are as followed: Apple QuickTime, iTunes and Bitdefender Total Security - Version 17.15.0.68. I uninstalled both of the apple software's and upgraded the Bitdefender to a version compatible with Windows 8.1.
I had no issues with the download & installation of windows 8.1, however the instant between windows loading screen and the switch to user log in screen is blank/black for a good 3 minutes, if not more. Normally after the shut down screen the computer would power off completely, however now my computer screen is blank/black and the computer is still powered on for about 10-15 minutes, I know that it is on as all the fans/HDD LED are active. This time fluctuates and I'm not sure why. I've checked with windows update and no updates are available, all of my softwares (and third party applications) are up to date. On Microsoft Community forum and so on, all i can say is that there are many others experiencing a issue only with a blinking cursor and their circumstances are different so i don't believe its related.
I've updated my BIOS to the current version and my display driver and chipset are up-to-date, all drivers offered on the asus website, i even installed the realtek sound driver which i wasn't using previously. Reset BIOS, removed battery for CMOS, removed all components 1-by-1, ran CHKDSK no problem found, only standard keyboard/mouse/display connected, no change whatsoever!
I've tried safe mode and its the same, only the transition to logging in and shutting down have improved slightly. Tried clean boot at the result was the same. Checked the WER and found a lot of this "DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE 0x0000009f". I've already run the SF diagnostic tool and will load the zip file here. I rather not do a clean install of windows 8 and I'm not sure if restoring my pc to windows 8 before the upgrade will resolve the issue if it is driver related.

Nov 23, 2012Windows 8. I upgraded my Dell laptop the weekend it came out and performance on my laptop has slowly degraded. Now I'm too the point where my computer is so slow, it just won't work. Reboots take forever. 10-15 minutes from startup until I can login. Another 10-15 minutes before the Desktop is up. But still, apps won't launch. When I can launch the Task Manager, it says my hard drive is at 100% utilization, even though I have not launched any apps. I went through and removed unneccesary items from the startup menu. My computer is a couple years old, but I was under the impression that if the computer ran Win7, it could run Windows 8. My computer has an Intel Centrino 2 processor with 8GB RAM.
How do I go about doing a reinstall of the OS? When I originally upgraded, I selected the "Bring Nothing Over" option.

Windows explorer would only use around 37 MB but now it uses almost 300 MB and it shows through poor computer performance. Dec 2, 2013Upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro from 8 through the Windows Store. Everything seemed to go smoothly. Updated graphics card drivers prior to install of 8.1. Now whenever I start up, I can log in, but then it goes to a black screen with a cursor. Ctrl-Alt-Del will bring up the task manager and from there I can access programs and get on the internet. So after maybe 5 minutes or so after opening a program (usually firefox) the Metro screen randomly loads. None of the store apps worked, though I was able to find a fix for that. Some of them still don't work right though. Is there a better way to upgrade from 8 other than through the store?

Jan 16, 2014I just reset my laptop and am upgrading to 8.1. This is the third time I have tried upgrading and every time it results in a blank black screen. I believe it has to do with video drivers. By a blank black screen I mean totally blank. There is no backlight and there is no cursor. I had this problem when it upgraded the intel graphics driver to the .3345 version so I went into safe mode and rolled it back. After the reset I uninstalled all intel graphics driver and used the microsoft driver. When I update to 8.1 I get the black screen even with this video driver. I will keep trying using the stable intel driver to see what happens.
