Installed 8.1 some 2 weeks ago (give or take).
Now today i wanted to look to my 2 external spindle drives if defrag had run and it did run......BUT also on my Samsung SSD's which i never do myself.
Windows 8 erroneously defrags SSDs, indeed. Doesn't look like it's been fixed in Windows 8.1.
Why Windows 8 defragments your SSD and how you can avoid this.

Windows 8, but I've updated my box to Windows 8.1. I have a 250Gb Truecrypt file as my 'Documents stash' which I mount as a separate drive.
On Win 7 I could defrag this but on 8.1 the drive is greyed out not giving me chance to defrag it.
(See attached screenshots from Win 7 HP & 8.1 Core)

I tried to upgrade to windows 8 through the store and if failed horribly, the pc refused to boot a an error code I that don't remember so I decided to wipe everything and install Windows 8.1 from a usb drive. Everything was fine for the past week and a half until 2 days ago when the disk defragmentation tool decided to stop working, I ran the tool many times after installing 8.1 and it has always worked but now I get a 0x80070057 error which should mean that the size of my partition is wrong. I did a chkdsk /r /f that took 2 hours to complete and it didn't find any errors and I also ran a sfc /scannow with no luck.
Here is a screenshot
After spending some time googling for the issue I found out that there are many Windows 8.1 users with the same issue and on the microsoft forums no one seems to be able to fix this. From what I understand this seems to be related to the size values of the partition which according to the defragger are wrong but the tool was working before and I didn't edit the partition in any way.

I'm using Windows 8 Home Premium 64 Bit.
My Disk Defragmenter that came with the system will not open. When I try to open it, a CMD windows appears for 1 second and disappears. I have tried opening it in all ways.
I have tried:
Safe Mode
Sfc /Scannow
Chkdsk
Anti Malware scans
I need something like the answer for this question, only a way to do it in Windows 8. His instructions only work on Windows 7.
Disk Defragmenter won't open in Windows 7

I Defraged my comp to Optimize. After defrag, my mouse and keyboard no longer worked. I tried restarting, unpluging and switching to a wired mouse and keyboard. I can't get the comp to recognize them. I also switched between back and front ports.

Do you use the built-in Windows Optimize Drivers (Disk Defrag) or do you use a third party product?
If third party product, which product and why?

I am running Win 8 Pro.
My set up has 2 x 650 GB WD Black hard drives and a Samsung 840 (non pro) for the boot drive.
I have run the latest Samsung Magician, however the BIG problem is that it has stopped the windows 8 Defrag program.
I reinstalled Win 8 and all was OK, (now for the bit about me being thick -- ) I thought I would try the old version of Samsung Magician, and Bu**er me if has not only done the same thing again, turned off defrag and optimize, I am just unable to open defrag in order to defrag my WD drives.
I do not really want to reinstall Windows 8 again unless I have to, so how to switch defrag bag on again.

I have never managed to get System Restore to work on Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 and always have to fall back to a backup.
I get a message indicating error code 0x80070005 and suggesting I turn off my anti-virus.
I have tried turning off my AV before running the restore but to no avail, and since the AV starts automatically I'm not quite sure how turning it off before the restore would work.
I recently tried a restore from the latest recovery point and got error code 0x80070006.

It seems that Windows 8.1 Pro's scheduled defrag is consolidating free space, which is taking forever on one of my 2 TB data drives, which has about 300 GB free space. I stopped it at about 9%, and dfrgui immediately showed it as "OK (0% fragmented)". Clicking its Optimize button resulted in the defrag phase completing almost immediately, but then it was back to consolidating free space, starting at 5% this time. According to Task Manager, it's read/writing about 40 MB/sec, and the Active Time is over 90%. I really don't want this to go on for hours and hours and potentially repeat itself during future scheduled scans. Is it possible to alter this behavior, or should I just disable the weekly defrag task?

recently I tried doing a system restore on windows 8 and after going through the process of waiting, I received a message upon reboot namely this "System Restore did not complete successfully, Your computer's files and settings were not changed.
System Restore could not access a file. This is probably because an anti-virus program is running on the computer . Temporally disable your antivirus program and retry System Restore.
An unspecified error occurred during System Restore, (0x80070005)"
anyway I panicked and went to undo the last change made(if one was in fact made) via system restore , but the same thing happened I repeated this procedure a few times trying to restore to the same point and then undoing the operation (I have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) to which it just kept giving the same error message after going through a short process and rebooting each time.
I was wondering could any of this possibly of corrupted my files, deleted files, or wrecked anything in any way, my computer my programs, anything. As far as I can remember the restore process said something about restoring registry each time, which only took a short time.

I just bought a Seagate ST750LX003 Momentus XT 750 GB as the new primary drive for my gaming laptop, and I'm wondering how to defrag them, and whether it is safe. I wanted the best of both worlds (space and speed) so I went for the middle ground. What is the difference between a regular HDD, SSHD, and a SSD? Do I just let Windows perform its' normal defrag routine as I normally would, or do I need to download some kind of proprietary software from Seagate that will do it? I like to use 3rd party software (UltimateDefrag) for my defrag operations, is all. And how much can I fill it up before it starts to slow down? I ask because I've heard that you cant fill an SSD up past around 50 to 60% or so before it slowly starts to degrade, since it needs room to perform its' TRIM (defrag) operations. Is this also true of SSHDs?

I have USB external hard disc 320Gb that I use to try Windows 8 since Developer Preview until the latest PreRelease. I boot from this USB HDD to keep internal HDD intact and protected with end point encryption.
It went very well until at some point suddenly I cannot boot from it anymore. All the file is in perfect condition when accessed from other system.
I try to recover with Recovery disc, but found nothing. I delete bootmgr to force corrective action. But still problem not solved.
Later I read that Grub cannot boot if boot loader and file required for boot is beyond 137Gb (128x1024x1024x1024 bytes). But I never read that Windows has same limitation. Anyway I would like to prove that.
I find UltimateDefrag that can move certain files to beginning of the disc. I select bootmgr, boot folder, and Windows folder to be placed in front. It works. I can boot again from my external USB HDD.
I just wonder how to keep those file in 128GiB boundary, it won't happen again?

I was playing an online game when suddenly I've got a runtime error which froze the screen. I had to push the power button and my laptop restarted, slowly than usually but otherwise O.K. However, when I tried to do the maintenance using the Optimize tool this is what I see now:
The "volumes" (for the lack of a better word) Push Button Reset and ?Volume{9789f0... that have never been showing before are showing now and when I try to force a manual optimization the window just blinks but doesn't do anything. I've had the optimization set to "weekly" but after that I and it changed to "daily" for at least 3 days now but this didn't solve the problem. Highlighting and right-clicking doesn't work.

I upgraded my OS to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 from the store yesterday. Everything seems to be working fine - no lags or freezes, but I noticed that my PC doesn't drop below 30-35% in idle, also it doesn't downclock (balanced power settings) - it used to drop to 0.8ghz in idle and be like 1-4% in idle before the update, and now it's permanent 3.2ghz and over 30% in idle. I noticed that Service Host: Local Services and Service Host: System Services in the task manager are draining over 10% CPU each, something that didn't happen before.

I have a dual boot laptop with Windows 8 and Win7. When I choose to run chkdsk /f from Command Prompt(Admin) on my Windows 8 boot drive, I get the normal message that says disk is in use and to type "Y" to schedule it to run on restart. I type "Y" and hit "Enter", but if I either Restart or Shutdown and turn laptop back on, and choose to boot Windows 8, chkdsk seems to cancel itself. I get the message to "press any key" in 2 seconds if I want to cancel the disk check, but I never press or do anything yet chkdsk seems to cancel itself. When Windows 8 boots I have looked in Event Viewer and there is no sign of any chkdsk or wininit event that says it checked disk for errors.
I have gotten the message in Action Center, to reboot to scan and repair errors which works fine. Right clicking my boot drive, going to the Tools tab and scanning drive for errors also works. My only issue is scheduling to check my boot partition for errors via command prompt.
Must I disable Fast Startup/Hybrid Boot for the scheduled chkdsk to work or something else?

I really like the way Skydrive synchronises my folders between my work and home laptops and I have my Skydrive docs available offline. But why is Skydrive excluded from the list of libraries that are backed up by File History. I want to be able to back my docs up onto an external hard drive. Is there no way of doing this? Same with Backup on Windows 7, Skydrive seems to be excluded.

Got a mates computer that would not boot normally, so button mashed f8 to bring up safe mode, uninstalled the crap, ran an antivirus and checked for registry errors with an outdated reg cleaner, there were heaps of errors which I could do nothing about as I had no internet at the time, so I decided to do a complete reset of the PC through the f8 boot menu.
It went fine until I woke up the next morning to find that when it boots all I get is the error message at the toshiba boot screen saying "Windows could not complete the installation. To install windows on this computer, restart the installation" there is no mouse pointer so I smash enter, it restarts and does exactly the same thing on next startup. I can't seem to get f8 to work after the reset and I'm stuck!

8.1 installed on SSD, Easeus backup doesn't see my HDD any more, so I can't make an image of it. It only sees the C drive and my external hard drive, but not the internal HDD (Hitachi 500 GB) that I use as a second drive for storing personal data. I tried with Macrium Reflect, and same problem.
