So I tried to open defrag today for the first time with using Windows 8 and when I click on the application the command prompt opens and closes in about two seconds and then nothing happens.
View 7 RepliesI Defraged my comp to Optimize. After defrag, my mouse and keyboard no longer worked. I tried restarting, unpluging and switching to a wired mouse and keyboard. I can't get the comp to recognize them. I also switched between back and front ports.

Now today i wanted to look to my 2 external spindle drives if defrag had run and it did run......BUT also on my Samsung SSD's which i never do myself.
Windows 8 erroneously defrags SSDs, indeed. Doesn't look like it's been fixed in Windows 8.1.
Why Windows 8 defragments your SSD and how you can avoid this.
Do you use the built-in Windows Optimize Drivers (Disk Defrag) or do you use a third party product?

Windows 8, but I've updated my box to Windows 8.1. I have a 250Gb Truecrypt file as my 'Documents stash' which I mount as a separate drive.
On Win 7 I could defrag this but on 8.1 the drive is greyed out not giving me chance to defrag it.

I am running Win 8 Pro.
My set up has 2 x 650 GB WD Black hard drives and a Samsung 840 (non pro) for the boot drive.
I have run the latest Samsung Magician, however the BIG problem is that it has stopped the windows 8 Defrag program.
I reinstalled Win 8 and all was OK, (now for the bit about me being thick -- ) I thought I would try the old version of Samsung Magician, and Bu**er me if has not only done the same thing again, turned off defrag and optimize, I am just unable to open defrag in order to defrag my WD drives.
I do not really want to reinstall Windows 8 again unless I have to, so how to switch defrag bag on again.
I tried to upgrade to windows 8 through the store and if failed horribly, the pc refused to boot a an error code I that don't remember so I decided to wipe everything and install Windows 8.1 from a usb drive. Everything was fine for the past week and a half until 2 days ago when the disk defragmentation tool decided to stop working, I ran the tool many times after installing 8.1 and it has always worked but now I get a 0x80070057 error which should mean that the size of my partition is wrong. I did a chkdsk /r /f that took 2 hours to complete and it didn't find any errors and I also ran a sfc /scannow with no luck.

After spending some time googling for the issue I found out that there are many Windows 8.1 users with the same issue and on the microsoft forums no one seems to be able to fix this. From what I understand this seems to be related to the size values of the partition which according to the defragger are wrong but the tool was working before and I didn't edit the partition in any way.
I'm using Windows 8 Home Premium 64 Bit.
My Disk Defragmenter that came with the system will not open. When I try to open it, a CMD windows appears for 1 second and disappears. I have tried opening it in all ways.
I have tried:
Safe Mode
Sfc /Scannow
Chkdsk
Anti Malware scans
I need something like the answer for this question, only a way to do it in Windows 8. His instructions only work on Windows 7.

It seems that Windows 8.1 Pro's scheduled defrag is consolidating free space, which is taking forever on one of my 2 TB data drives, which has about 300 GB free space. I stopped it at about 9%, and dfrgui immediately showed it as "OK (0% fragmented)". Clicking its Optimize button resulted in the defrag phase completing almost immediately, but then it was back to consolidating free space, starting at 5% this time. According to Task Manager, it's read/writing about 40 MB/sec, and the Active Time is over 90%. I really don't want this to go on for hours and hours and potentially repeat itself during future scheduled scans. Is it possible to alter this behavior, or should I just disable the weekly defrag task?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just bought a Seagate ST750LX003 Momentus XT 750 GB as the new primary drive for my gaming laptop, and I'm wondering how to defrag them, and whether it is safe. I wanted the best of both worlds (space and speed) so I went for the middle ground. What is the difference between a regular HDD, SSHD, and a SSD? Do I just let Windows perform its' normal defrag routine as I normally would, or do I need to download some kind of proprietary software from Seagate that will do it? I like to use 3rd party software (UltimateDefrag) for my defrag operations, is all. And how much can I fill it up before it starts to slow down? I ask because I've heard that you cant fill an SSD up past around 50 to 60% or so before it slowly starts to degrade, since it needs room to perform its' TRIM (defrag) operations. Is this also true of SSHDs?

I purchased PC with Win 7Pro but in the time frame that allowed free upgrade to Win 8 Pro. I upgraded by downloading and installing - however I also purchased the Official upgrade discs 32/64 bit from Microsoft and received them some weeks after upgrade took place. I have since auto upgraded via App Store to 8.1 and I now wish to use Refresh Recovery but no matter which disc I insert Win7/8 it states invalid.
Win 8x64. Just got a UAC flag that Windows backup app wasn't working (see attached). Looking at Windows 7 File Recovery in the CP, all it shows is "Backup or Restore Your Files" at top and the rest of the page, which usually has some choices, is blank. Never seen that before. Rebooted to be sure.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI do a lot of computer animation, and I am often wanting to set off a render overnight, where the computer thinks hard about turning wireframe triangles into pretty pictures.
Problem is I was waking up to find that my render had not proceed very far at all, and gone to sleep. If I go to power settings and tell it to 'Never Sleep' then my render makes it all the way through.
But I don't want to be a sweatshop labor boss and never let my sweet worker bee get any sleep. I want it to work till it finishes the render, and then go to sleep. That's how it used to work on my old Win XP box.
Is there a way I can set sleep to say, only kick in if cpu usage is below a certain percent?
I'm using a Sony vaio laptop E-Series and few days back I updated it to windows 8.1 and after few days it started to hang a lot so I tried to look for my Quick Heal Internet Security 2013 so that I can search for virus but later the system showed that it doesn't supports on windows 8.1 so I downloaded the new antivirus and activated the product and when the anti virus was updating itself the system got stuck. When I turn on my pc it gets stuck within 2-3 minutes I don't want to go to some service center or shit.

I bought my HP Pavilion 20 all in one desktop two weeks ago and then power options stopped working a week ago everything else seems OK. I looked in the console and "balance" is checked, going further, all the times are set (display dimmed 5 mins, turn off display 10 mins, put computer to sleep 30 mins). A day or so before this happened I replaced the standard (rather cheap) wired keyboard and mouse with a Logitech k360 Keyboard and m326 mouse (both wireless).
I can put the computer to sleep using the keyboards sleep button. I also temporarily changed the "Put Computer to Sleep" section in Power Options console to "never" when "Windows Photo Gallery" needed to update the face recondition on my photos transferred from my old computer (it took over 24 hours). After "Windows Photo Gallery" had finished I changed it back to 30 mins and since then no power options.
I have the problem since a few weeks (mostly after a tile update), and I'm not the only one, my friend has it too on both his laptop and desktop, that the live tiles, or actually some of them, for example weather, are not refreshing anymore. It just shows the blue weather tile. When I open it, it works though, news the same. Also I tried to deinstall and reinstall the weather app, but now it doesnt even show the "use live tile" button anymore (look at picture).
View 2 Replies View RelatedAbout two weeks ago I began to notice strange behavior on my PC which made me think it may be a virus. Some examples:
1. When I'm online a message window frequently appears stating "internet explorer has stopped working"
2. Some websites do not display adverts on the page. I've attached a screenshot from youtube to illustrate what I'm referring to.
3. Some webpages will not load. I keep seeing "webpage under maintenance at this time". This is typical for websites at certain times but to see it every time I try to access is suspicious.
4. I use Hotmail and typically the first time I start it up in the day I notice that the first email I open causes the entire page to go blank as if it erases everything on it, it then reopens with all of my emails listed and finally the email I began to read will reopen. This only happens after I boot my system and open the first email. This will not happen on any other computer.
5. I seem to be having issues installing certain programs. They won't install citing various reasons such as outdated files, incompatible etc. These were all working flawlessly prior to reformatting my system.
6. I'm unable to post messages even though I'm logged in. When I type a message I see the timer cycling but it never posts my messages, it's as if it's stuck in a loop or frozen.
Having felt that a system reformat was in order I did just that not more than a week ago. Everything was reinstalled and updated. Once all the Windows 8 files were installed I began to notice the exact same problems surfacing immediately. I'm currently using Win 8 with IE 10. 16 GB RAM, 64 bit OS. The computer itself is an HP and a year old.

-i5-3210M
-6 GB RAM @ 1600 MHz
-1 TB HDD @ 5400 rpm
-2 GB nVidia GT650M with Optimus
-Windows 8 Single Language 64-bit
It came with Recovery partitions. Now using the Samsung Recovery application I had copied my recovery files to another external HDD alongwith a backup of C drive. Now all these are in some weird extensions. I refreshed my PC and then the problems began. The problems were :
-No Fn key working
-Samsung recovery did not recognize factory condition recovery point,i.e,Factory reset option was gone.
-The backup on external HDD was showing up on Samsung Recovery, but after clicking on it, it would go on a restart and recovery never happens.
I installed the new Windows 8.1 Service Package 1 update earlier today. I was loving it. They finally got to addressing how bad Windows 8 was for laptops. However, the new context menu in the Start Screen simply does not appear anymore. It was earlier, and I have made no significant changes to the system in that time. When I right-click on a tile now, the only thing that happens is that it gets highlighted. No context menu to speak of. In addition, I can't get a context menu for the "Apps" section either.
View 1 Replies View RelatedA month back I accidentally deleted the wow6432 node from my registry under system_user. I believe this is the root of all my problems. Once I did that, my toshiba c885 D 64 bit would not boot. I forced the computer to shut down and pressed f12 to get to the system recovery options. I then restored to a point before my blunder. Well, my laptop worked for a while and then magically the screen goes black and will not reboot. I did sestem restore a few more times since I could get a little bit of work done in between restoring and the screen turning black again. After I was fed up with having to run system restore every other day, I decided to run system refresh to keep my files but reset everything else. After restoring I am getting the same problem and find myself again running system restore every other day just to keep working.
My questions are if I completely reinstall windows 8 and start from scratch, will this definitely solve the problem? I thought system refresh would have worked, so I'm not sure. Also, are there any other available options for me to fix my computer without starting from scratch?
When I've been running certain programs on my computer, I keep getting the message, program has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. This has happened to me in Internet Explorer when I try to play movies, Windows Media Player, Norton Internet Security and when I try to run Windows Experience index.
Some programs wont even open. My computer has been running fine since I purchased it 8 months ago. This started happening after a windows update a couple of weeks ago. I've refreshed windows 8 twice, ran a full system virus scan, ran malwarebytes and it found nothing. I also tried sfc /scannow and used dism /online /cleanup-image /restore health to fix component store corruption and fix corrupt system files and also tried gwscan from Hirens boot cd. I generated a system health report and this is what the report came up with:
I have a windows 8.1 dell laptop ,for some reason system restore is not creating points manually or automatically, when I try to make a restore point manually the working bar just keeps moving at the sane time though I noticed in the device manger a generic volume shadow copy entry will show up with a yellow mark beside it ,I have tried maybe 10-15 times to uninstall this and try system restore again ,but this keeps repeating itself,
I have also went into safe mode but system restore points can't be made under safe mode, I did the repository thing where I rename that folder to old and reset repository in safe mode ,same result .

When I looked at WINDOWES SEARCH here is says STOPPING and when I clicked on properties the area that appears to be where you can change this is grayed out (STAT STOPE PAUSE RESUME) cannot be clicked ...
It is also not working from the blue screen where I can click on Apps/Files/Settings - (Do not know the name of these new screens or locations) ...
