It's a volume licensed copy of Windows and I have no access to these updates. From what I've read, I need an MSN (what ever it's called) subscription to have access to these updates. Oct 30, 2013Have finished upgrading to Windows 8.1 and my RAID-5 ReFS volume has NOT yet been recognized. It was not available in "This PC" after the upgrade... and was still not available after using the ReFS registry hack. After applying the hack and restarting the computer, the only change was the System Reserved portion of my C drive became visible.
Under Administrative Tools> Computer Management> Disk Management, the drives in question are visible as a single RAID-5 volume but Status shows "failed", the file system entry is empty, and the drive letter is absent showing a red "x" icon.
Currently downloading the latest chipset, SATA AHCI, and graphics drivers for my mobo. Will update once those have been installed.

Sep 3, 2013So, the system volume in the system tray goes from 1-100. 1 is comfortable. 3 is loud. 6 is ear-splitting.
Is there anyway I can redefine the values for the system volume and set the maximum to like... 10?
Any time I hit the volume buttons on my keyboard to lower the volume, it goes from 1 to 0 and I can't hear anything, so I hit the volume up button and it goes from 0 to 3 and it's way too loud.
Right now, I have the volume set to about 3 most of the time, with individual apps' volume controls set really low (like a game set to volume "0.5" out of 100).
This is just ridiculous. There must be a way to redefine the value for the system volume. Some settings file I can edit or something, if not a nice GUI method.

How do I do this upgrade using the MSDN bits available? I would really prefer to not to a clean install if I can avoid it because the bump to 8.1 pro has to be minimal from an upgrade point of view.

Nov 5, 2013I have a Toshiba laptop (Portege R835-P56X). I was running Windows 8 upgraded from Win 7. I successfully upgraded to Windows 8.1 but was having some problems with the Wifi. I followed the instructions to reset the TCP/IP Autotuning. When I restarted, Windows failed to start, and all repair & recovery options failed, so I cannot even access System Restore.
Windows attempts Automatic Repair then shows options to "Restart" or "Advanced Options" but I am unable to click either one--the keyboard and keypad are both completely non-responsive.
Unfortunately, I do not even have a Win 8 disk to use for a repair. I do have a disk image from just before I upgraded to Win 8.1. The problem is: how to access it?
I did a legitimate upgrade from Windows 7 and have a license for Win 8 with Media Center, but unfortunately cannot locate my original email, so Windows won't send me a Windows 8 DVD.
I'm tempted to simply restore to factory settings and Windows 7, which I'm running on my other PC without all these hellish problems. I hate Windows 8 anyway.
Updates :: Can't Change Update Settings
May 11, 2014Ever since upgrading to Windows 8.1 I haven't been able to change my update settings. The drop-down is greyed out and can't be clicked on. Above the drop down it says "Some settings are managed by your system administrator"
I've deleted my user account and created a new one, but the problem remains. I've unlocked the Administrator account, but even through that account the settings can't be changed. I'm not in a homegroup, as I've heard this could solve the problem and I've disconnected and reconnected my Microsoft account to my User Account to no avail.
Windows keeps updating and I don't have the bandwidth to continue this way.

I adjusted settings and tried to rename with my name however the ROOT user is still John Doe. I've heard I can create a new account and "move" all my files to my new account, thus essentially renaming the computer. I've heard all that changes is the "pointer". Exactly, which files I need to move so I can delete the "John Doe" user?

Jan 9, 2014In our small office, we've made the decision to bring in a server. Right now, we have multiple PCs installed with Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, both basic OEM editions; and several others installed with Windows 7 Home Premium OEM.
In order to insert them into the server's domain, I'm forced to upgrade them to their respective Professional editions, for which I've recently received a VLSC license.
Now, I've been trying to use the MAK keys to upgrade my current OEM versions with no success. Attempting to "Add Features," using 'slui.exe' and 'slmgr.vbs' to install the new key all come back with an error that the keys can't be used.
My question, as such, is whether it is even possible to upgrade Windows 8 Basic OEM to Windows 8 (or 8.1) Pro Volume License?
