The PC boots up and I can log in ok but I am unable to open any browsers, use the start bar or actually get in to most programs, use the search function or get in to any settings as it just hangs.
I can get to the start menu through charms and I can access My Pc from there but opening control panel hangs as well. I am also unable to get to the troubleshooting and repair.
I have tried to restart and press and hold the shift key but it just hangs again when restarting, also tried to log out of my profile but that also hangs.
I have tried to boot from a USB with a windows 8 ISO to get in to the repair from there but that doesn't seem to work - Also the windows product key shows as 'not available' ?how to actually do anything with my now expensive paperweight that has a pretty but non-functioning desktop screen ?
I can't access WinStore and PC Settings, it just takes me back to my Start Screen. I tried using Microsoft's Fix-it stuff and said I have missing files and dll.I don't want to refresh or reset my PC , but if I have no choice, I will have to do so. And also I tried to sfc /scannow and this is the result.
I installed the windows 8.1 update thinking it would just upgrade the system but it looks as though it's done a reinstall. I've now got loads of things not working, my programs have lost lots of there settings and it seems really slow.
I'm currently restoring a true image back up and I'm praying it's going to work , I don't think I'll bother with 8.1 until I reinstall the system from scratch.
My PC is crashing daily, my guess is about every hour it's turned on at least.
So I've tried to install glary utilities, restarting my PC in safe mode, yet... I can't open up PC settings. The reason is that I need to reboot my PC completely, everyting else haven't solved the problem at all, but it's hard to reboot when you can't open PC settings.
So, any step-by-step guide to open PC settings and access my reboot menu.
I have a Toshiba (satellite) laptop and it has just been upgraded to Windows 8.1. I made recovery discs before the upgrade but would like to backup again after the upgrade so i don't have to revert to the factory set-up or refresh option as I have already had that experience and i don't want to go that route again! My laptop is only 9months old & running fine so far with no issues, i can back-up my documents etc to my flash drive but i would like to back up, 'or do you call it copying', the whole setup so if i have a problem i can re-install the whole lot as it stands from today. I have increased the system restore percentage bar to allow more restores points as another safety option.
Edit: Successfully upgraded to 8.1 after uninstalling 3rd party Wifi drivers, Vid card drivers, mouse drivers, keyboard drivers and then upgrading Intel chipset drivers to Version 9.4.3.1011 WHQL from [URL]
Everything works. Damn drivers prevented the install from completing the first time
Yesterday my HP sleekbook arrived (cheaper amd version) with windows 8. Everything works fine except that I can't open the store or pc settings. When I click on the store tile, or click on the more settings button, the fullscreen (green for store, blue for settings) icon fills the screen en then dissapears.
I have tried the sfc / scannow option but this did not work after 3 trials. Reset or Refresh also isn't an option because I can't enter the settings and thus won't be able to perform these actions.
Ive noticed since I installed windows 8.1 none of my apps have been working I figured this is because I left the installer running over night and my laptop might of turned off before finishing the installation so it might be corrupt didnt think much of it at the time since I never really used the apps but now I want to system restore my laptop and the PC settings app wont open like the rest of my apps I click on the tile and it opens for 1-2 seconds then takes me back to the home screen. :C
Here is what happened to me in the past couple of days. I was using the latest beta drivers for my GTX 560 and apparently Windows 8 downloaded and installed either a previous driver or a corrupt driver and automatically installed it. So the next day I do my typical daily reboot and I get nothing but a black screen with no response at the part where I sign in.
So after researching on my phone, I kind of came to the conclusion that I described above. I downloaded Windows 8 today (since I did a digital upgrade from Windows 7) just to put it on a flash drive so I can refresh my PC. After refreshing my PC, I was glad to see the lock screen, sign-in screen, etc.
I have tried SFC /scannow, messing around with boot up services, and running apps.diagcab. Nothing is working! NVIDIA update components refuses to install as well and I'm sure other things aren't working properly.
I am using Win 8.1 on my HP Desktop computer. I have my settings to Open to the Start Screen. However, whenever I open a Windows 8 App (like Mail, People, Games etc.) when I close them it automatically reverts me to the Desktop (Even though I was on the Start Screen when I opened it.) How can I get it to stay on the Start Screen when closing a Win 8 app?
I'm currently running Windows 8 that my laptop came with. I decided to wait for the official 8.1 release in October instead of the Preview.
I have a lot of Calendar reminders on my Windows 8 Stock Calendar and I was wondering when I upgrade to 8.1, will those reminders disappear?
I'm asking this because I've been reading a lot of articles that you have to re-install your apps and settings after the update.
Although you probably can't confirm this until it has released (I guess). Has any user lost their reminders on when they switched from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 Preview?
I just built a secondary new work computer. Unlike my main rig which I just do a fresh install of 8.1. On this one I put Win 7 then Win 8 pro upgrade, once that's done I upgrade to 8.1 through store. thing is once I upgrade to 8.1 I notice pc settings and store wont open, if I click on them they flash and just return to desktop.
I found this solution here:
All Modern apps fail to start after Windows 8.1 upgrade - Microsoft Community
But it only seems to work on admin account.
I noticed same thing is happening with regular user account and the above fix does not work, in fact when I try and set permissions to system in registry step it mentions I get "Unable to set new owner on packages, access is denied"
I bought a new notebook with Windows 8 and upgrade to 8.1, and i also install a new Windows 8.1 in a new computer 3 days ago... and both of my Windows don't open the apps on the first screen.. like Skype, email, windows store....
The apps almost start, show the program name on the screen them close.. The problem is that is happening on both computers....
I am having a perplexing issue after doing a clean install of Windows 8 on a 256GB SSD where I can not get into the "UEFI Firmware Settings" Tile in Advanced Options. Basically, when trying to enter the EFI/BIOS via: Settings in Charms / PC Settings / General / Advanced Startup / Restart Now / Troubleshoot / Advanced optons I do not see the "UEFI Firmware Settings" tile to get into the UEFI/BIOS!
My machine (which only has (1) hard drive) is an Asus N56VZ and came pre-installed with Windows 8 on the factory 750GB 7200rpm HDD. I cleanly reinstalled the OS on to a new 256GB SSD via an OEM copy on a disc and all seemed basically OK except that sometimes when getting to the Login screen it would freeze and the cursor would not be flashing, I could not enter my password nor shut down via the power icon on the bottom left of the screen. I would then have to hold down the power button to shut off the machine. This freezing of the login screen would be intermitent where most of the time I could enter my password but maybe 20% or so of the time I could not log in.
Due to that bug I decided to securely erase the SSD and once again reinstall Windows 8 and now I have this issue where in the Advanced Options menu there is only (5) tiles/options present and not the usual (6) as the "UEFI Firmware Settings" functionality is now missing
I'm not on high contrast theme. Everything show it's color as it should be but only on the settings page it's mostly black and I can't do the setting..
My computer is so messed up Version 8.1 . I first noticed that I had a problem with Kaspersky. It said my license was unable to verify and to update data base to solve. It wont let me update. In fact it wont even let me uninstall, and secondly I cant download ANYTHING off the internet. My main problem is OFFICE keeps freezing and I need that program it also says there is a problem with my license and I have not been able to fix it it just freezes. So I thought I will download open office, but as I mentioned I cant download anything when I click run nothing happens when I click save it says corrupt or unreadable file. I thought no problem I will just hit F2 (yes I have tried hitting every single key after this and nothing) and enter bios screen and recover from my USB but do you think F2 (or any other key takes takes me there, no. Products like Kaspersky, Office, I have paid for etc say they are unlicensed which they are not. Anything I try to download, anything, like a new virus program will not work. I can't download, I cant even get into Change my PC settings it just freezes when I click this. I have had people try and trouble shoot this, Kaspersky has not gotten back to me and everyone is telling me stuff I cant do. I cant download, I cant access bios, I cant even access Change my PC settings. Ready to hear all the generic "it should" or "you should be able to"
I upgraded from windows 7 to windows 8 pro and internet explore will not open at all from any icon or area. I read where someone removed Logitech web cam to fix the issue, but I do not have that.
On our desktop we are running Windows 8.1 and IE 11
On our laptop we are running Windows 8 and IE 10
When I visit the MS page to download IE 11 to install on the laptop I'm only being offered IE 10, also I do have 'install new versions automatically' ticked. Do I have some kind of setting on the laptop that is blocking this upgrade to IE 11?
I am trying to open a webpage [URL]... in my laptop (Acer) but am unable to open it after entering username and password. I am able to open it from my another laptop (Dell).
All I am getting is continuous circling of java after entering my login details. In the laptop where it is getting opened, after entering my login details, I straightaway get a pop up of security warning of do you want to run this application - but not in where it is not getting opened. After entering my login credentials, Java message just keeps circling.
I compared java in both laptops, microsoft silverlight package, adobe flash, shockplayer, internet options, firefox options but still unable to proceed further after entering my login details.OS is Windows 8.1,jave installed is latest both 32 and 64 bits.Java verify is detecting java working fine, java settings shows it is enabled in browser I already uninstalled anti-virus and tried but still no success so re-installed antivirus.
Family safety is not working on either of my daughter's laptops. I have spent hours trying to rectify the problem and My last conversation concluded with the problem is endemic to windows 8. I have tried numerous solutions and have followed the tutorials to the letter and all the settings appear as they should be according to the instructions. Can this be fixed or is it a problem within windows 8???
I have installed Windows 8.1 on my laptop. My laptop is Hp 6510b. Windows 8.1 is working fine for me. But the only issue I am facing is that I am unable to see my Bluetooth in Settings. Hence I am unable to transfer files. My android is also not searching my laptop.
I have been trying to upgrade all of my computers to Win 8.1. 2 updated fine, but the last machine will not upgrade.
Every time I try to upgrade my last computer through the Store I get the following error: "We weren't able to connect to the Store. This might have happened because of a server problem or the network connection might have timed out. Please wait a few minutes and Try Again."
I have waited, and rebooted, with no success. I tried to log on using my Windows Live ID and get a similar message.
I've noticed a problem over last few days.. I'm not able to open applications like task manager, registry editor etc.. I get the error message stating that "The service cannot accept control messages at this time".. What to do?
After disabling IE 10 I get a warning message if opening a hyperlink. This appears in all Office 2013 applications.
" Your organization's policies are preventing us to complete this action for you."
I want to open hyperlinks with another browser. I cannot find a policy that is configured to prevent opening a hyperlink. My browser is set as default and the file associations are correct.
My computer has been running fairly slow lately, and I want to do a full system restore. I've done this on my old Windows 7 computer with no problems, but I can't seem to do it with Windows 8.1.
My laptop didn't come with an installation disk, Windows 8 was already installed when I got it. And I can't seem to make a recover partition drive.
I cannot change the Windows update settings even though I am the administrator. It is grayed out in the snapshot above. I am the only user. I created a local account as well. I need to change the update settings to download updates automatically but I am stuck on "check for updates but let me choose..".
I need to change the setting in order to get internet access at my work using my home computer. The IT person at work recommended that I install Windows 8.1 to see if it would correct the problem, but the new installation did not work. This second screenshot shows that I am an administrator,I think.
I've been having this weird problem since i installed windows 8 on my system. at first i thought it is nothing, but after reading forums i found out there is some problems with my system.
in the PC Settings page, when i click on personalize, i get 3 options, two of them are Account Picture and Start Screen, it opens fine, but i am NOT able to click or edit anything in that. I'll also attach screens for some extra information.
After a upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, I seem to have lost my ability to use the recovery partition. Every time I go and use it I get an error message Unable to reset your PC. A required drive partition is missing.
I have contacted ASUS for recovery DVD's however I was told to go to a authorized repairer to have it fixed for a fee. My last laptop was able to burn recovery DVD's but not this one.
I understand that Windows 8.1 creates a new recovery partition for itself however I did read on this forum it is possible to get it back to default settings.
