Accounts :: Unable To Make Changes To Family Safety Settings
Jul 12, 2013
Family safety is not working on either of my daughter's laptops. I have spent hours trying to rectify the problem and My last conversation concluded with the problem is endemic to windows 8. I have tried numerous solutions and have followed the tutorials to the letter and all the settings appear as they should be according to the instructions. Can this be fixed or is it a problem within windows 8???
How do I disable the setting that prevents Windows Live Family Safety from running on Windows 8? The built-in Family Safety program isn't enough for me since I need to apply it to an administrator account.
I'm on HP laptop 2000-2d27dx Windows 8.1. My login screen shows only one user account. I have to click on arrow to switch to other existing user accounts. Is there a way to display all user accounts at login screen?
why can stander users make a password reset disk can can be used to reset the the administrators or any other users password is there a way i can make so that it only works for the account it made?
I am trying to debug some crash dumps which all point to NTOSKRNL.EXE but I am unable to debug or even analyze it because the WinDBG throws me an error :-
Code: ************* Symbol Path validation summary **************Response Time (ms) LocationOK C:symbols Symbol search path is: C:symbols Executable search path is: C:symbols Unable to load image SystemRootsystem32 toskrnl.exe, Win32 error 0n2*** WARNING: Unable to verify timestamp for ntoskrnl.exe*** ERROR: Module load completed but symbols could not be loaded for ntoskrnl.exe
[code].....
Now, I am unable to understand what is the reason behind this even after much browsing. Also, the symbols are downloaded and saved in C:/Symbols. I am sure that these are working because some DUMP files which do not point to NTOSKRNL get debugged fine.
Also, one more issue I am facing that whenever I have to open another crash dump file immediately after closing one, the option for opening the Crash Dump gets greyed out -_-' . The only way to open another DUMP file is via closing and opening workspace and everything again?
The PC boots up and I can log in ok but I am unable to open any browsers, use the start bar or actually get in to most programs, use the search function or get in to any settings as it just hangs.
I can get to the start menu through charms and I can access My Pc from there but opening control panel hangs as well. I am also unable to get to the troubleshooting and repair.
I have tried to restart and press and hold the shift key but it just hangs again when restarting, also tried to log out of my profile but that also hangs.
I have tried to boot from a USB with a windows 8 ISO to get in to the repair from there but that doesn't seem to work - Also the windows product key shows as 'not available' ?how to actually do anything with my now expensive paperweight that has a pretty but non-functioning desktop screen ?
I am having a perplexing issue after doing a clean install of Windows 8 on a 256GB SSD where I can not get into the "UEFI Firmware Settings" Tile in Advanced Options. Basically, when trying to enter the EFI/BIOS via: Settings in Charms / PC Settings / General / Advanced Startup / Restart Now / Troubleshoot / Advanced optons I do not see the "UEFI Firmware Settings" tile to get into the UEFI/BIOS!
My machine (which only has (1) hard drive) is an Asus N56VZ and came pre-installed with Windows 8 on the factory 750GB 7200rpm HDD. I cleanly reinstalled the OS on to a new 256GB SSD via an OEM copy on a disc and all seemed basically OK except that sometimes when getting to the Login screen it would freeze and the cursor would not be flashing, I could not enter my password nor shut down via the power icon on the bottom left of the screen. I would then have to hold down the power button to shut off the machine. This freezing of the login screen would be intermitent where most of the time I could enter my password but maybe 20% or so of the time I could not log in.
Due to that bug I decided to securely erase the SSD and once again reinstall Windows 8 and now I have this issue where in the Advanced Options menu there is only (5) tiles/options present and not the usual (6) as the "UEFI Firmware Settings" functionality is now missing
I can't access WinStore and PC Settings, it just takes me back to my Start Screen. I tried using Microsoft's Fix-it stuff and said I have missing files and dll.I don't want to refresh or reset my PC , but if I have no choice, I will have to do so. And also I tried to sfc /scannow and this is the result.
I'm not on high contrast theme. Everything show it's color as it should be but only on the settings page it's mostly black and I can't do the setting..
My computer is so messed up Version 8.1 . I first noticed that I had a problem with Kaspersky. It said my license was unable to verify and to update data base to solve. It wont let me update. In fact it wont even let me uninstall, and secondly I cant download ANYTHING off the internet. My main problem is OFFICE keeps freezing and I need that program it also says there is a problem with my license and I have not been able to fix it it just freezes. So I thought I will download open office, but as I mentioned I cant download anything when I click run nothing happens when I click save it says corrupt or unreadable file. I thought no problem I will just hit F2 (yes I have tried hitting every single key after this and nothing) and enter bios screen and recover from my USB but do you think F2 (or any other key takes takes me there, no. Products like Kaspersky, Office, I have paid for etc say they are unlicensed which they are not. Anything I try to download, anything, like a new virus program will not work. I can't download, I cant even get into Change my PC settings it just freezes when I click this. I have had people try and trouble shoot this, Kaspersky has not gotten back to me and everyone is telling me stuff I cant do. I cant download, I cant access bios, I cant even access Change my PC settings. Ready to hear all the generic "it should" or "you should be able to"
I transferred my Family tree maker to my new Windows 8 programme, the Hebrew characters show up as gibberish. I have Hebrew installed on the computer. is there some setting i can change in windows?
From desktop view I swipe to the lower corner and select change pc settings and I can't access. Just shows blue screen with gear. I am trying to create new user accounts.
I have installed Windows 8.1 on my laptop. My laptop is Hp 6510b. Windows 8.1 is working fine for me. But the only issue I am facing is that I am unable to see my Bluetooth in Settings. Hence I am unable to transfer files. My android is also not searching my laptop.
I recently installed Windows 8. I have apply every requirements that is in windows for password. In settings it is set and also in power option....
But when I restart my pc or when i shut it down and turn in it back on it doesn't ask for password and it goes straight to start screen but it does ask for password for sleep and hibernate. Its very important to me to have protection.
My computer has been running fairly slow lately, and I want to do a full system restore. I've done this on my old Windows 7 computer with no problems, but I can't seem to do it with Windows 8.1.
My laptop didn't come with an installation disk, Windows 8 was already installed when I got it. And I can't seem to make a recover partition drive.
I cannot change the Windows update settings even though I am the administrator. It is grayed out in the snapshot above. I am the only user. I created a local account as well. I need to change the update settings to download updates automatically but I am stuck on "check for updates but let me choose..".
I need to change the setting in order to get internet access at my work using my home computer. The IT person at work recommended that I install Windows 8.1 to see if it would correct the problem, but the new installation did not work. This second screenshot shows that I am an administrator,I think.
I've been having this weird problem since i installed windows 8 on my system. at first i thought it is nothing, but after reading forums i found out there is some problems with my system.
in the PC Settings page, when i click on personalize, i get 3 options, two of them are Account Picture and Start Screen, it opens fine, but i am NOT able to click or edit anything in that. I'll also attach screens for some extra information.
how to rebuilt user with broken system settings and keep directory structure (for scripts and non -windows friendly software) and hopefully user name.
Problem: Main user profile is broken, flat out broken. After login the screen starts flashing and it gets worse from there. I can run everything and not duplicate the error message. I always create a pristine user when I do an OS install. Administrator is OK, but it has saved me more than once to have the regular admin-type account. Since I have the nice, fluffy, running profile now I would like to learn just where is it reading these files that tell it bad things.
Another is a broken video driver (sounds were Windows Default on the working one, I told it no sounds in light of what I read) Both profiles are running the exact desktop wallpaper changer, it is working fine on the one account. I couldn't turn it off anyway on the bad account, I can't get to any of the settings windows, regedit, control panel items (that I want) are not running. Same errors as above.
I assume the calls are in the .appdata directory or perhaps the registry. I used to know how to open another user's registry in regedit but can't figure it out in Windows 8. Is there a way to tell it only to run particular services for a certain user, I can't see the services module when in the broken profile, again, same type of errors as before. Not sure which info you want on the machine or how you get it.

I have a Dell laptop running Windows 8. It is 3 months old.
I have lost my admin rights to the computer - I cannot make changes. Therefore, I cannot do a system restore.
I tried booting up in safe mode and turning on the admin rights via command prompt and typing "net user administrator /active:yes". It tell me 'access is denied'. I think it said "error code 5".
It may or may not be coincidence but I had installed Classic Shell a week before this problem occurred.
I have been trying to find our when intel will release drivers for the Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family on windows 8. I can not play many games without them.
I have installed Outlook 2007 on a friend's laptop (running Windows 8). I set up his main email account (gmail). All fine. I then set up another account (btinternet). Again all fine.
The problem is that, in the folder pane, the btinternet inbox & folders do not appear. And, when emails come in, whether they're aimed at the gmail or the btinternet account, they all appear in one mixed up inbox. How do I separate the two account inboxes, emails in & folders?
I have set up Outlook of various flavours successfully several times, including on my own Windows 8 machine.
I am using Windows 8 Professional. I am using a Dell XPS 1510 and am using a PCI Express Realtek PCIe GBE Family Expresscard.
I have already downloaded the latest driver from Realtek from 09/26/12. I have ran Windows Updates. No matter what the Realtek PCIe GBE Family Local Connection loses internet connection.
This card worked fine for months in Windows 7 Pro. The card works fine in Windows 8 Safe Mode. However, when logged into Windows 8 in normal mode, the card will allow and have internet connection for 1 min 12 secs to 1 min 32 secs, at which point the internet connection drops. The wifi and internal NIC (10/100) connection work fine. I've changed the NIC binding order. I've disabled the internal NIC, and Bluetooth (just in case) in the BIOS. I've tried uninstalling the WiFi to force using the Realtek PCIe GBE Family card.
I have ran procmon in order to try to figure out what if any application runs within the 1 min 32 sec timeframe that may interrupt the Realtek PCIe GBE Family card and have uninstalled any suspected applications. I've tried disabling services one at a time to see if it makes a difference.
I have tried DHCP and Static IP addresses.
The problem seems to be something within Windows 8. Something with Windows 8 disables the Realtek PCIe GBE Family internet connectivity. I've tried everything to keep the connection alive, internet works fine, I get perfect gigabit level speeds up until the 1 min 12 secs to 1 min 32 secs then all I get is no network connectivity.
The Windows 8 Troubleshooter is useless. Even though it is setup with static IP it says it can't find the default gateway. The issue is not with the router, somehow not being compatible with Windows 8 or something else. The card worked fine with the same router in Windows 7 and the internal NIC card works with the router in Windows 8 so its not that the router has problems with Windows 8.
I've also already disabled the "Allow the computer to turn off this device" option in the cards Power Management tab (first thing I tried). I've set the Power Management options on the laptop to be set to Maximum Performance.
Everything else with the laptop in Windows 8 seems fine, only this PCI express card that enables gigabit connection is failing. Don't want to use the slower WiFi or 10/100 connection those are too slow for what I need.
I'm having a problem setting up a PIN code to logon to Windows 8.1
I've linked mine and my partners MS accounts to Windows and as we use password generated passwords consisting of random characters, numbers etc, it would be so much easier to just use a PIN to logon to the computer. However, every time I click the option to 'Add' under PIN in the Sign-in options page of PC Settings, nothing happens. The cursor busy icon flickers but no new menus or options appear and I'm ultimately unable to access the settings.
I've tried logging off/on, rebooting and restart the credentials manager service but there's no change.
More info...
After clicking Add on the sign-in options page, I'm seeing quite a few of the following errors logged in the Application log: Faulting application name: CredentialUIBroker.exe, version: 6.3.9600.16384, time stamp: 0x5215f313 Faulting module name: DUI70.dll, version: 6.3.9600.17031, time stamp: 0x53086a1c Exception code: 0xc0000005 Fault offset: 0x000000000000277d Faulting process id: 0x110c Faulting application start time: 0x01cf5b36ca94bed5 Faulting application path: C:WindowsSystem32CredentialUIBroker.exe Faulting module path: C:Windowssystem32DUI70.dll Report Id: 084f9905-c72a-11e3-8270-c05ffa3ee80b Faulting package full name: Faulting package-relative application ID:
I've tried booting into Safe Mode with Networking and this time I see an error box appear.
It's not too useful though.
Windows Security Create a PIN First, verify your account info. The server threw an exception.
I purchased an HP Notebook PC 2000-2c20NR last week that came pre-installed with Windows 8. Somehow - I think it was when I was trying to change settings to where I do not have to give a password everytime I log in - I became lost as the Administrator. I am the only one who uses this laptop.
So, now I am stuck, unable to change settings, install/uninstall programs, etc. Everytime I try to change something, I am given this error screen:
As you see, it asks me to type an administrator password, then click Yes. The "Yes" option is greyed out and disabled. I have tried everything I could find to change this, but in order to make any changes, I have to be the Adminstrator (which I am), but this error screen pops up with any and everything I do. I have even tried a System Restore/Recovery, but I can't, because the UAC will not let me continue as Administrator.
The status of my account currently names me a "local user."
I have Norton Internet Security 2013 installed and no viruses, etc are present.
I tried all means of opening the UAC slider menu (from Control Panel/User Accounts/change UAC settings, using cmd.exe, etc) but it never shows up. Verified file integrity, everything is fine.
I am new to windows 8 and having trouble with my account alias, I recently purchased a new laptop, when I created my alias email address I used a pop 3 email (ntlworld.com) unaware that that these email addresses cannot be used, I am trying to add a Hotmail.co.uk address but it is saying, "For security reasons, you need to verify your primary alias before you can add another alias" I have received an email in my[url]... email and it says if the address is correct I do not need to do anything, but it can't be verified.
My son is no longer able to logon to his standard user account on my Windows 8.1 U1. I am unable to switch users following a cold start of the computer. Also, I am unable to switch users while logged on to my account.
My System: Dell XPS 8100 with Intel i5 processor and 6GB DDR3 ram. The desktop initially included Windows 7 Home Premium. I upgraded to Windows 8 Pro as a $40 Windows Store purchase. I've since updated to Version 8.1 and the first update following the release of 8.1. At time of upgrade to Windows 8, all prior updates to Windows 7 were current and successful. Since upgrading to Windows 8, all updates are current and I only experienced 1 update "Failed" (KB2919355), which upon a reinitialization after the failure, was successful. Until this problem, the PC and operating system have run very well with no real problems.
As noted above, there are 2 users on this PC. Myself (administrator), and son (standard user). I can't pinpoint an exact date when my son was no longer able to logon to his account; however in checking the registry I find that the last notation of his login activity under error reporting was a successful login and logoff done on April 30th. And even though attempts have been made since that time to login to his account, there are no notations of this in the error reporting log that I can find. Most likely that's because I can't get to a point that will allow me to "initiate" a login for his account. It's as though his account does not exist.
What Happens When: Boot - When the computer boots, it only presents a login screen for my account. There is no right-arrow allowing me to switch users. Switching to a secure login via Ctrl Alt Del yields the same results.
After I'm logged in - If I click to switch users, once again I will get a login screen with my account only and no way of switching users. If I wake the computer from sleep or from screen saver mode, I'm presented with my user picture and password, however, this time I do get a right-arrow to switch user. When I click the arrow, the screen goes black for about 5-7 seconds, at which time I'm presented my user login and no switch user arrow.
Efforts to Resolve: I've researched this issue the the past month or so and have checked and/or tried just about everything that's out there from Microsoft, Windows 8 Forum, The Windows Club, and a few other sites as well. As I follow the suggested fixes, everything seems to be as it should be. I've yet to find anything that does not appear to be "right". For example: SFC /scannow says everything's OK. If I go to User Accounts, both accounts are present. If I go to C:Usersmy son's account, it is there. I am able to create another account with name and password. However, I am unable to open that account for the same reasons that I'm not able to open my son's account. The new account created is NOT reflected under C:UsersNew Account, so I'm unable to copy files from my son's account to the new account.
Because of the time delay from when my son first informed me that he's been unable to open his account, my restore points are all following when it probably occurred. I do have a Macrium image from late March that is available. However, I'm wondering if I brought the PC back to a state from this past March if I would be able to install all updates to get the system current. I know Microsoft was imposing time constraints associated with updating to Update 1 following Windows 8.1 ...
My computer recently began requiring me to use password at startup. I had previously disabled.
I went to NETPLWIZ as suggested elsewhere (Log On User Account Automatically at Windows 8 Startup)
However, there is no box to uncheck that says "Users must enter username and password to use this computer." (see attachment)
What am I missing? I have also checked the Password Requirement on Wakeup in the Power settings and that shows "No" and the "Ctrl-Alt-Del" option is also not in place.
