Edit: Successfully upgraded to 8.1 after uninstalling 3rd party Wifi drivers, Vid card drivers, mouse drivers, keyboard drivers and then upgrading Intel chipset drivers to Version 9.4.3.1011 WHQL from [URL]

Everything works. Damn drivers prevented the install from completing the first time

Stuck On Boot Screen After Upgrade To 8.1

Oct 20, 2013

I upgraded my Win 8 to Win 8.1. After hiberanation or shutting down a computer I'm stuck on boot screen when I turn it on (there's a win logo and circle stops spinning) and I need than to turn off computer by pressing the turn off button. After the restart there is no problem! And after I forcely shut it down, there is no problem also!

I tried clean install (fresh windows 8.1 with formatted hard disk), refresh your pc, startup repair - nothing works.

While I was on windwos 8, I didn't have any problems!

Windows 8.1 Upgrade - All Settings Lost

Oct 18, 2013

I installed the windows 8.1 update thinking it would just upgrade the system but it looks as though it's done a reinstall. I've now got loads of things not working, my programs have lost lots of there settings and it seems really slow.

I'm currently restoring a true image back up and I'm praying it's going to work , I don't think I'll bother with 8.1 until I reinstall the system from scratch.

Setup Installation :: Will Windows 8.1 Upgrade Lost Calendar Settings?

Aug 27, 2013

I'm currently running Windows 8 that my laptop came with. I decided to wait for the official 8.1 release in October instead of the Preview.

I have a lot of Calendar reminders on my Windows 8 Stock Calendar and I was wondering when I upgrade to 8.1, will those reminders disappear?

I'm asking this because I've been reading a lot of articles that you have to re-install your apps and settings after the update.

Although you probably can't confirm this until it has released (I guess). Has any user lost their reminders on when they switched from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 Preview?

Setup Installation :: Upgrade To Win 8.1 Fails - Process Stuck At 6% After Getting Devices Ready

Nov 5, 2013

I bought a Win 8 Pro 64 bit upgrade dvd in order to upgrade from Win 7-64bit. After completion I downloaded win 8.1 pro upgrade from the store. At the end of the installation it says "getting devices ready". It starts the process showing the rate and it gets stuck at 6%. Turned off the laptop (by disconnecting power and battery) and got the following message:

".......... Could not complete the update to Win 8.1 ......... error 0x1900101-0x30018 "

I tried to install this upgrade a third time to no avail.
I checked that I got all the win 8 updates.
I did a system restore.
I updated the nvidia driver.
I checked the requirements, including CMPXCHGb support in my 64bit version, by using Coreinfo.exe.

After Upgrade To 8.1 - Unable To Open Settings?

Aug 17, 2014

The PC boots up and I can log in ok but I am unable to open any browsers, use the start bar or actually get in to most programs, use the search function or get in to any settings as it just hangs.

I can get to the start menu through charms and I can access My Pc from there but opening control panel hangs as well. I am also unable to get to the troubleshooting and repair.

I have tried to restart and press and hold the shift key but it just hangs again when restarting, also tried to log out of my profile but that also hangs.

I have tried to boot from a USB with a windows 8 ISO to get in to the repair from there but that doesn't seem to work - Also the windows product key shows as 'not available' ?how to actually do anything with my now expensive paperweight that has a pretty but non-functioning desktop screen ?

Backup / Copy New System Settings After 8.1 Upgrade

Sep 15, 2014

I have a Toshiba (satellite) laptop and it has just been upgraded to Windows 8.1. I made recovery discs before the upgrade but would like to backup again after the upgrade so i don't have to revert to the factory set-up or refresh option as I have already had that experience and i don't want to go that route again! My laptop is only 9months old & running fine so far with no issues, i can back-up my documents etc to my flash drive but i would like to back up, 'or do you call it copying', the whole setup so if i have a problem i can re-install the whole lot as it stands from today. I have increased the system restore percentage bar to allow more restores points as another safety option.

Applying Store 8.1 Update Using Locally Saved Files

Nov 7, 2013

Bought a new Acer all-in-one and immediately upgraded it to 8.1 via a 3GB DL. Went perfectly.

Cleverly (I thought) I saved the update files should I ever need to do the update again.

Then the Acer had a hardware problem so I returned it to Best Buy for a replacement.

Now, I try to apply the 8.1 upgrade files that I previously saved from the store DL to the replaced computer.

It asks for a key, but won't accept either the one from the new replaced machine, nor the one that I returned.

Are these licenses now tied to an individual computer, via a unique code embedded in the BIOS or some such??

I really don't want to do the DL again, since my bandwidth is metered and 3GB takes a good percentage of my total monthly quota.

Anyhoo, I have already sussed out that one may apply headers and footers to repeating pages, but I'm very confused as to how one may apply ones business design - which is a WHOLE page, over which I type my gumpf... So far, I just insert a text box onto the page, but this only works for one page at a time. The answer should lie in converting it all to a JPG.

Setup Installation :: Windows 8 To 8.1 Upgrade Failed - Must Upgrade System BIOS

Jul 3, 2014

Yesterday, I clean-installed Windows 8 Pro x86 on an old Dell Vostro 1400 laptop which had been running Windows 7 Ultimate, and it activated and ran fine, without even a single exclamation point in Device Manager. I applied the update necessary to make the Store offer 8.1 and proceeded to install it as I've done on a couple other machines. After downloading the thing, it errored out with:

Couldn't install Windows 8.1

Contact your PC manufacturer to see if you can upgrade the System BIOS

When I clicked the OK button, it then gave me the informative and grammar-challenged error box:

Something happened and the Windows 8.1 couldn't be installed. Please try again. Error code: 0xc1900104

Try again Cancel

Ever the optimist, I clicked Try again, and of course, it proceeded to download all over again from scratch, only to error out in the same way. I then downloaded all the Windows 8 updates, although just the one had been necessary on my other machines that successfully upgraded to 8.1, and tried again, only to get the same result.

Today, I've discovered the Windows 8.1 Compatibility Assistant, which avoids the lengthy download of the upgrade every time (Microsoft, maybe you should run it implicitly before downloading 3 GB of transient data), and it tells me:

This PC doesn't meet system requirements

Contact your PC manufacturer to see if you can upgrade the System BIOS

Obviously, no BIOS updates are available, and what exactly is the problem here with my BIOS. The obvious googling turned up nothing except some people with Sony Vaios that had the same problem, which was corrected with a BIOS update, and of course, there is no information on what their BIOS update does to make the 8.1 upgrade possible.

1. Can the ISO file that was automatically downloaded by the system during windows 8 upgrade to 8.1 be saved or backed up? the download was about 2.6 GB.

2. If so can the backed up file be used to do a "clean install" in future on the same machine?

Windows 8 PC Will Not Boot Up At All / Stuck On BIOS

Jun 23, 2013

I have a pretty new computer. Just a few months old. It is supposed to be a good one.

Dell XPS 8500
Quad core i7 processor
lots of memory and extras

This computer also has the 64 bit edition of Windows 8 installed on it. Windows 8 is driving me up the wall!!! I have had numerous problems with it since day 1.

As recently as a few days ago, my system was running reasonably okay. Then I downloaded a driver for my network card from the dell.com website. From that point on, I cannot get my computer to boot up properly. I have turned my computer off and on multiple times in hopes that it would correct whatever is wrong.

When I first turn my PC on, it will stay stuck at the Dell logo window for a while.

Sometimes it will make it past that and it will give me an error message that says:

"error sending end of post message to ME, system HALT!"

Also, I sometimes get a message which says:

"the last USB device you connected to the computer malfunctioned, and Windows did not recognize it.

Try reconnecting the device. If windows still does not recognize it, your device may not be working properly."

This is insanity. I have NOT connected any new USB devices to my computer.

I do not know what to do. I figured that the easiest thing might be to try simply reinstalling Windows 8 from scratch. So I inserted my Windows 8 reinstall disk that Dell sent me when I bought this thing. However, my computer will not boot from this disk. So I guess I am stuck.

It just goes black even if I restart it a hundred times. I am sure the cables of the monitor are fine and I am also sure that there are signals coming from the pc.

P. S. I even ASSUMED that the pc must have switched on and typed password to login and waited enough to get it to sleep mode and then recover from there. But still no luck.

Windows 8 Stuck On Diagnosing Your PC After Using Win Disk

May 24, 2014

I recently got all 5 restore disks, language disk, 3 of 3 recovery disks and the 1 of 1 system disk. I followed the instructions and on the 2nd thing where I did not need to insert a disk, I believe it was calling Passwords or something, forget. But it was at 96% when it then started doing [RETRY] about twenty times.

After that, it says ImageX Error: System could not find specified file.

I followed the instructions. After I hit "Ok" it started beeping until I shut it off. Now it won't even boot up. All it says is "Preparing Automatic Repair" and then goes black, then "Diagnosing your PC" comes up. This is the reason before I had to buy the disks, but it'd still turn on. Just not onto the desktop screen.

Setup Installation :: Stuck On Windows 8.1 Evaluation?

May 8, 2014

I've purchased my Lenovo Twist (came with Windows 8.0) about a year ago and I've upgraded to windows 8.1 when it was released in the windows store. Months after I upgraded I ran into a few problems, I was unable to access apps on my metro screen. None of the solutions worked so my only choice was to refresh or reset. I've tried going into the recovery option on boot and the refresh option on the settings both said I needed installation media. I was unable to create a recovery media because the checkbox was grayed out on the "Create a Recovery Drive".

After doing some searching I decided to download the evaluation copy of windows 8.1. I extracted the Install.wim file and set it as my OS image on reagentc.exe. I was still unable to refresh because it said "The drive where windows is installed is locked". The reset option worked, after I completed the reset I was expecting it to bring me back to windows 8.1 instead I was on the evaluation version.

I also noticed that the F11 option on boot disappeared after the reset.

Stuck On (Preparing Windows) When Attempting To Login

Feb 15, 2013

I have 2 accounts on this PC, one is a MS account, the other is the built-in Administrator account, which I renamed and assigned a complex password to make it difficult for anyone to get into. However, I recently disabled the Admin account with the "net user administrator /active:no" command, and then deleted both the Administrator and Enigma (the name which I renamed it to) folders in C:Users. I also went into Control Panel and made sure that the user is gone, it does not appear now. I can still log into my PC via the MS account since it has admin rights.

But after rebooting the Admin/Enigma account still appears on the login screen and asks for a password. So I reenter the old password and it then hangs with a "Preparing Windows" message. Then I do a hard reset and log into the MS account, I can see that a TEMP folder has been created at C:Users, which I assume was created as a result of trying to log in as Admin/Enigma. I'm not sure, but I'm guessing that the PC still remembers the password and other info associated with the account, and that info must still be stored somewhere in the Registry. That seems to be the only logical cause of the issue.

So, I need locating that info and resetting it, because I intend to reactivate Admin again, but this time I'm going to leave it alone. I had deleted it in the 1st place because of the appearance of 2 usernames for the account at C:Users, and found that odd, so I figured I could get rid of both and then recreate/reset. I rarely use the account anyways because it is a security risk, and only to do a handful of things that I've had trouble doing with the MS account, despite it having admin privilidges.

Windows 8.1 Stuck In Repair Loop (2nd Time)

Jun 3, 2014

About a week ago I had the same exact problem. When I would turn on my pc it would try to diagnose my computer, repair it, and then fail and find no problem. I didn't find any solutions so I did a fresh install. Now its happening all over again. I originally thought the problem was my OS and re installing would fix my problem. Now I think that my SSD (OCZ Vertex 450) might be the problem.

I think that disabling automatic repair could also fix the problem, but I don't want to turn that off and cause another potential problem if it wont stop the boot loop. I also have a hard drive which I could install windows on if I need to, but I am not sure my SSD is the problem and if it cant be fixed. I haven't been downloading anything lately, and I formatted both my SSD and hard drive when I did a clean install so I don't think the problem is a virus.

NOTE: Yesterday I told Grandma I would see what was wrong, but it would bug out, freeze, etc when trying to log into the administrator. The screen would go totally black and then freeze. So, the computer has shut down improperly several times.
