Every now and then as I use the computer, all windows disappear and only the desktop is showing. I know this is supposed to be useful somehow, I find it incredibly irritating and want to turn it off. I think it's got some gimmicky name, but I can't recall it right now. what I am talking about, and how to turn it off....

1 year ago I had a desktop PC with two HDD in it, one is 500GB,the other is 1TB. I bought the PC with only the 500GB HDD in it, but after buying the 1TB HDD, I always installed OSes in it. For many time I didn't get any problem, until I accidently swapped the plugs for the HDDs after I cleaned the cabinet. My Windows 7 wouldn't boot even though I had did "nothing". I realised my problem and just swapped it again and the problem was gone. After reading about it, I learned that it was caused because of the MBR, which was on the 500GB HDD. No problem till MY PC died and my family ran into money problem which prevented me from buying a new PC so I started using a netbook for everyday PC use. I had to trow out all my PC hardware, except for my two HDD which I kept safe in my wardrobe.
The thing is, I have all my precious music, games and stuff on those HDD, so, since I don't have the money to build a new PC, I instead bought a IDE/SATA to USB converter, which worked fine on the 500GB HDD. Problem is when I plug the 1TB HDD, which won't allow me to open the partitions (even though they show perfectly both on My Computer and on Computer Management). On Computer Management, they all show as RAW partitions, I don't know what to do. I know some programs will only recover files from they extensions, but I would like to have all my files untouched, the way they were, so I could back up important files on my netbook, and let the HDD alone waiting for the day that I can finally buy a new PC.
I must have made an error upon set-up. Every time I connect a smart phone or tablet, a "windows explorer" window opens, showing the files on the device. I'd like to have the system just do nothing when I connect, but I can not seem to find out how to manage that option. I imagine it would be easy, if I could find it.

Actually, it was until I had to change my motherboard (and had a lot a crashes). Now that my PC is running normally again, that option is greyed and therefore unavailable. All the other options on the tab are functional.

I am using classic shell in Windows 8 on my home pc & laptop.
On the PC "desktop" shows in file explorer but, on the laptop it does not show, please see the left attachment as opposed to the right one of the PC.
In addition, the laptop one shows the partitions spread out as opposed to the PC.
How to make the laptop show things as per PC?
I upgraded to the CP a few days ago and just noticed a huge problem. The "Show Desktop" tile that is normally on the start screen be default has gone missing. I can't figure out how I got rid of it in the first place, but is there some way to add it back?
I have changed the title to more accurately reflect the problem. A bunch of the features that come with Windows 8 CP (the tablet friendly Settings page, Remote Desktop, the show desktop tile, The Windows Store, etc) all vanished shortly after I installed Windows 8. I tried reinstalling and the same thing happened again.
Windows used to show all nearby WiFi hotspots in the same way that my phone does. You could also "rescan" to do a better job of seeing weak ones.
I don't know how to do this on my Win 8.1 Update1 desktop PC.
It just seems to show my own 2 connections and not all the 10 or so I see on my phone. I left click on the bar graph in the N.A. - a blue bar pops out from the right but it does not show all the nearby connections.
What algorithm is it using to make this selection? How can I control that? Do I have to buy an "app" or a program?
Some how, some way I have turned on some kind of Google/Chrome desktop on my Asus ME400C. It opens up when I click on the chrome icon or something brings it up (see attached image).
How to turn this off, all I want is chrome not Google's ?am desktop. Second, how do I change the default browser?

Also I have similar problem with system restore.I disabled it, but system turned it on again.
Although I have an Oo shortcut icon on the Desktop & a listing under 'Documents', I also have an Oo tile in the Start menu. Why when I select the tile does it open on the Desktop. If I delete the shortcut icon & the Document listing will this allow it to open as a full-screen site from the Start menu?

About 1 time in 5 cold starts it remains at the start screen and I have to click on the desktop tile to get there. If I reboot from 'Restart' it seldom happens.
View 9 Replies View RelatedAfter updating to Windows 8.1 (from windows 8), start menu stopped to hide after choosing an app. I enter menu start -> click on desired application tile (if it is metro app, everything works) -> nothing happens -> when i manually close menu (return to desktop) i see that desired program is running. It is very annoying - in Windows 8 (and 8.1 on my friends' machines) i just needed to enter menu and click on app. Menu would close automatically and app would run. Now i need to enter menu, click on app and close the menu. I've seen some examples of proper behavior but it was rare and i couldn't identify the pattern when menu is working as expected and when is not. I really don't want to reinstall whole system P.S. I also noticed that search is a little bit slower, but this may be caused by the fact, that now it searches also files by default, not just apps.

I have noticed that when the computer exits from sleep mode, either one or both external USB drive folders will open on the desktop. I can only guess this signifies that these drives may have been accessed while the computer was in sleep mode.

it happens from yesterday, the problem is when I playing games on my Dell inspiron N4050 and then the main power where the charger pluged in is turn off (it is the most problem in my country that there is heavy short fall of power), the laptop is remain ON just for 2 or 3 seconds and then its suddenly OFF. its not happening before, why is that,? why is the laptop didn't get power from the battery.?
