How To Turn Off Auto Hiding Of Open Windows And Show Desktop
Jun 26, 2014Every now and then as I use the computer, all windows disappear and only the desktop is showing. I know this is supposed to be useful somehow, I find it incredibly irritating and want to turn it off. I think it's got some gimmicky name, but I can't recall it right now. what I am talking about, and how to turn it off....

Nov 22, 2013After updating to Windows 8.1 (from windows 8), start menu stopped to hide after choosing an app. I enter menu start -> click on desired application tile (if it is metro app, everything works) -> nothing happens -> when i manually close menu (return to desktop) i see that desired program is running. It is very annoying - in Windows 8 (and 8.1 on my friends' machines) i just needed to enter menu and click on app. Menu would close automatically and app would run. Now i need to enter menu, click on app and close the menu. I've seen some examples of proper behavior but it was rare and i couldn't identify the pattern when menu is working as expected and when is not. I really don't want to reinstall whole system P.S. I also noticed that search is a little bit slower, but this may be caused by the fact, that now it searches also files by default, not just apps.

Mar 22, 2013My neighborhood shares a wi-fi connection. When some neighbors see my computer is connected to the network, they assume I'm awake and accepting visitors. I want to prevent my computer from appearing when you click on Network and all PC's and connected devices appear.
I'm running Windows 8. I opened a command prompt and entered net config server /hidden:yes and "the command was completed successfully". I then restarted my computer and logged onto the network, however my PC is still visible along with the other computers and devices connected to the network.
What additional steps must I take to accomplish this task?

Apr 25, 2014I bought a new PC with Windows 8.1 and I probably set up stuff wrong at the start.
I set up my wife and 2 daughters as Administrators like me but I thought that they would not be able to see my Documents or Pictures or Music as my Profile has a password. But they were able to see all my Music, Documents and Pictures.
Previously in Windows XP, all our stuff was separate and they didn't see any of my files.
Thinking all I had to do was make them Standard Users and this would rectify the issue but obviously it didn't. I have left them at Standard Users hoping for a solution from you people here on this Forum.
So I am asking is there a way on Windows 8.1 to have my stuff Private for me and for no one to see it?

Jan 13, 2013How to hid all the partitions in the factory installed HDD for Lenovo Y580.
This is the scenario.
Firstly, i successfully migrated all of the following partitions:
OEM/Hidden partition,
C partition: boot drive/ program files and data drive &
D partition: containing drivers
from my Lenovo factory installed HDD to the SSD and to use the SSD as the primary boot drive . Now, i plan to use the factory installed HDD as my data drive. (I am using a caddy tray for this whereby i plan to swap out the optical drive and pluck in the Lenovo factory installed HDD). However, for "safety reasons" i do not plan to re-format the entire factory installed HDD but rather to keep those partitions just in case if my SSD fails.
Hence, how do i turn all the three partitions above (in the Lenovo factory installed HDD) to become dormant? I want the computer to boot up from the existing SSD but then to treat the factory installed HDD as the data drive and not to read from any of the three partitions in the factory installed HDD.
I am planning to use EASUS as my disk partition freeware.

Feb 8, 2013When Windows 8 menu appears on start and I choose W7 - instead of loading W7directly , the computer is new-starting again and only than starts w7. That's a funny "behaviour"....
Also, after starting the computer, the menu is not directly shown up, first is this turning wi8 circle (like in the setup) and only about 30 sec. later comes the menu. I am using windows 8 enterprise, test version.

May 6, 2013Have a question regarding "Local Account". I'm having problems connecting to the Win 8 laptop from Win 7 as it will not accept my sign in credentials. With that, am I to assume that this is because the credential aren't "Local", and thus this is what this is for???
It will not accept the "Microsoft" account I use to log into Win 8 laptop.
With that, if I choose to go with the "local account" can I easily switch back to the Microsoft one?

May 1, 2013I had windows 7 and outlook express on it. The computer crashed. I had to get a whole new computer with windows 8 and just outlook. I have a folder with all my old outlook express emails in it but it is not compatible with outlook and I NEED an email in the old outlook express file. How the heck can I get this? When I try to open the old files it says " must be opened with outlook".

Jul 2, 2013In a few days I will receive a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon with Windows 8 installed. And separately I will receive an OEM Win7. Win7 is certainly what I intend to use, and I had originally thought I would wipe out Windows 8 and install Win7. But now I am wondering if I can somehow preserve Windows 8 for occasional use. (I would have ordered the machine with Win7 but this is a refurbished machine.)
I would rather not have to understand UEFI. (I'm sure it would be interesting, I just have other things to do with my time.) And, although I do it sometimes, and will if I have to, I do not like diddling with BIOS settings.
I know that factory installed operating systems generally can't be moved to other machines. And I fear that the factory installed Windows 8 that I will receive may not even tolerate being installed, e.g., in a smaller partition or under something like VMware (another complication I'd like to avoid).

I purchased it from a digital superstore, like a market, rather than a regular PC store.

Now, a BSOD has stopped me gaining access through refreshing, restarting, safe mode or any of the options available through the troubleshooting menu.
I retrieved my data using a SATA, and now wish to wipe the system of Windows 8, and avoid all the hassle it has brought me, returning to it's factory settings of W7.
I do not have a disk, or anything to do so. When I go through the menu on start-up, I click 'restore system' but I am then prompted for 'recovery mdeia or installation disk'.
Is it possible to just reset the whole PC and start from the day it left the factory?
If I need a disk to reset the original settings, where can I get it from and would simply loading it when prompted fix my problem?
All I want is to be able to use my own PC. I want Windows 8 cleared off and a reliable, original settings PC.

Mar 21, 2014I have 3 user accounts on my windows 8.1 laptop; 2 administrator types and 1 standard local account. While logged in using one of the admin user accounts or the local account, I can access the store app. However, when i log in using the other administrator account and try to access the store app, i just get the spinning circle and nothing happens. Is there something wrong with how one user account is set up that is causing the problem. Do I have to delete the user account and try re-establishing it.

When I open the desktop version, nothing happens at all. No tab, no pageload, nothing.I can click the gear and only file, safety, and compatibility view settings are available. I have tried reinstalling my codecs and different codecs like sharks, klite etc. I have reinstalled my graphic drivers. I have tried add/remove features, but no look. Its the same with wmc. I can play videos with quicktime. I was going to try a refresh, but I have way to many programs to reinstall, and a Windows 8 inplace upgrade doesn't offer to keep my apps & settings.

Jan 9, 2014I have tried with a new harddisk, took out my graphics card, checked my memory, they all seemed fine. My computer always run into a quick BSOD during the first boot and I am unable to see the error message and it restarts back to BIOS followed by a successful boot into windows on the second try. Occasionally, on the second try, it would go into windows repair and say that windows did not start up correctly etc. Normally, once it gets into windows, it would be ok. I did have once that I got a BSOD in windows.
Another interesting point to note is I can circumvent the cold boot crash issue by going to BIOS immediately on boot and exit it. This way, it would normally boot into windows without issues.
I suspect this is due to the on board network card but I cannot be sure. This computer is only 1 week old and I have spent a lot of time troubleshooting it. I have tried uninstalling, cleaning and re-installing the latest network drive.
Note that the cold boot crash issue does not always generate a mini dump file.
