After updating to Windows 8.1 (from windows 8), start menu stopped to hide after choosing an app. I enter menu start -> click on desired application tile (if it is metro app, everything works) -> nothing happens -> when i manually close menu (return to desktop) i see that desired program is running. It is very annoying - in Windows 8 (and 8.1 on my friends' machines) i just needed to enter menu and click on app. Menu would close automatically and app would run. Now i need to enter menu, click on app and close the menu. I've seen some examples of proper behavior but it was rare and i couldn't identify the pattern when menu is working as expected and when is not. I really don't want to reinstall whole system P.S. I also noticed that search is a little bit slower, but this may be caused by the fact, that now it searches also files by default, not just apps.
Within the last month or so, shortcuts on the start menu haven't been refreshing when their respective icons actually change. This only pertains to 3rd party programs and games--not those downloaded from the Microsoft store or included in Windows by default. For example, Steam recently changed the design of their logo. This change was never reflected in the start menu.
There are at least several other apps, like the PortableApps launcher, that the same is happening to. I've actually had to go to the entry in appdata and completely remove them and re-add them to get the changes to show. Never had an issue with anything like this until relatively recently, though I can't place one particular event as being definitive. It may have been like this for even longer and I wouldn't have known until a few things updated anyway.
See system spec for details, as everything is up-to-date. It would be nice for software to update icons and have those changes reflected rather than having to add manually.
I have ten folders in my Pictures library all full of pictures, and they get cycled on the Live tile for the Photos app, and also show up under "Pictures" once you've opened the Photos app.
Is there a way to hide a folder so it's physically in my UsersLibrariesPictures location, but WON'T show up under the Photos app?
My neighborhood shares a wi-fi connection. When some neighbors see my computer is connected to the network, they assume I'm awake and accepting visitors. I want to prevent my computer from appearing when you click on Network and all PC's and connected devices appear.
I'm running Windows 8. I opened a command prompt and entered net config server /hidden:yes and "the command was completed successfully". I then restarted my computer and logged onto the network, however my PC is still visible along with the other computers and devices connected to the network.
What additional steps must I take to accomplish this task?

I bought a new PC with Windows 8.1 and I probably set up stuff wrong at the start.
I set up my wife and 2 daughters as Administrators like me but I thought that they would not be able to see my Documents or Pictures or Music as my Profile has a password. But they were able to see all my Music, Documents and Pictures.
Previously in Windows XP, all our stuff was separate and they didn't see any of my files.
Thinking all I had to do was make them Standard Users and this would rectify the issue but obviously it didn't. I have left them at Standard Users hoping for a solution from you people here on this Forum.
So I am asking is there a way on Windows 8.1 to have my stuff Private for me and for no one to see it?
Every now and then as I use the computer, all windows disappear and only the desktop is showing. I know this is supposed to be useful somehow, I find it incredibly irritating and want to turn it off. I think it's got some gimmicky name, but I can't recall it right now. what I am talking about, and how to turn it off....
How to hid all the partitions in the factory installed HDD for Lenovo Y580.
This is the scenario. Firstly, i successfully migrated all of the following partitions: OEM/Hidden partition, C partition: boot drive/ program files and data drive & D partition: containing drivers
from my Lenovo factory installed HDD to the SSD and to use the SSD as the primary boot drive . Now, i plan to use the factory installed HDD as my data drive. (I am using a caddy tray for this whereby i plan to swap out the optical drive and pluck in the Lenovo factory installed HDD). However, for "safety reasons" i do not plan to re-format the entire factory installed HDD but rather to keep those partitions just in case if my SSD fails.
Hence, how do i turn all the three partitions above (in the Lenovo factory installed HDD) to become dormant? I want the computer to boot up from the existing SSD but then to treat the factory installed HDD as the data drive and not to read from any of the three partitions in the factory installed HDD.
I am planning to use EASUS as my disk partition freeware.
I've recently purchased a new laptop with Windows 8.1 pre-installed. First question is how do i enable a confirm window to pop up when deleting something? I don't like how i can just hit delete and it moves it (Only to the recycle bin, but i'd rather it didn't).
Secondly how do i stop the start menu from switching to that Windows 8 menu view? I did originally change it so that when you click the start menu (Bottom left in) it would actually bring up the start menu, but it seems to have reverted. On top of this how do i change it so that pressing the Windows button brings up the start menu rather than the Windows 8 menu view thing?
Thirdly how do i enable file details when in Windows Explorer. So in Windows 7 when you select a file it would give the size, name, author, date last edited etc in the details pane. How do i get that now?
Finally, how do i change my task bars transparency?
When you launch skype from the startmenu it is a huge square, when i launch task manager from the startmenu it is launched to the desktop.
Could there be a way to make the task menu launch from the startmenu to be a big square like skype is "phone eddition"
This would be useful because when im in games and the game freezes, i can bring up the start menu like SUPER FAST and it is visible but when i launch the task manager it is behind the game no matter what, so im always pressing the key stroke of the first letter of the game and pressing delete to see if i closed the game or not.
I actually have no problem with the Win 8.1 Start menu, but the colors of the regular desktop environment are killing me. Namely, the weird, off-off white of the menus. The High-Contrast White option under Personalization gives me the right color for the menu backgrounds but everything else about the theme screams windows 3.1, so I'd rather not resort to using that.
Is there maybe a registry tweak that I can use to change this one little color? I've tried a few things but nothing so far has worked.
I am having a problem updating one of my machines (KMS activated Pro Windows 8 VL) to Windows 8.1.
I cannot update from the store (as expected) and trying to update from any iso I have, it wants to remove everything except my documents. I would ultimately like to update this machine to 8.1 update 1 without reinstall if at all possible.
Is there a standalone installer for going 8 >> 8.1?
Right now, if I rename a file in windows explorer, or right click->create new folder (or new file), or do a bunch of other things, I don't see the result of the action (i.e., the file's name stays the same, or the new folder/file doesn't appear) until I click away to another folder, and then back to the one I did the action in.
Why is this happening, and how can I fix it? I haven't explicitly changed anything recently, though maybe an update broke something.
I've been trying to update to Windows 8.1 but I keep having issues. I constantly have failing Windows Updates. I have tried a couple different things, renaming the SoftwareDistribution file to .old, Windows Repair, and full clean install of Windows 8. I for the life of me can't figure out what's going on.
Currently, I am unable to install the SF_Diagnostic tool for some reason. It's hung up on downloading the necessary files from Windows Features. I have a mini dump from Windows 8 attached and will try to update it with the SF_Diag tool if it ever installs.
Edit: had to manually enable .NET Framework in order to get the diagnostic tool to install. The mini dump is still the same regardless so I'll keep that there.
I updated my Windows 8 to 8.1 version, and after I installed recommended updates for 8.1, my laptop restarted and from that time I cant log in anymore, when i type anything it says wrong password or username, but when i type correct it says Invalid pointer, and now i cant nothing, i cant even start in safe mode.
Every day & every night, this laptop is wakened out of its nap by Media Center. I've gone into Media Center / General / automatic download options and unchecked both boxes which leaves the timers greyed out.
This morning, sure enough, Media Center was still doing its thing. I find what's waking the system of course by going to Command Prompt and typing "powercfg -lastwake" - and the culprit is Media Center.
I've pulled out three gray hairs already during this episode, so before I get to the sixth, how to get Media Center from waking up this laptop. I mean, computers need sleep too.
Today I updated my Windows 8 install to Windows 8.1.
For the most part it went smoothly but I'm having a weird problem with my text to speech files.
But when I hit speak the voice is very distorted and the volume is low, it's the same for all the voices including the Microsoft ones.
I reinstalled TextAloud to the latest version, and I reinstalled the Lucy voice, (really the only one I use).
I figured that I had some glitch in the software but here is the weird part, when I played one of my Lucy videos the voice in the video shows the same distortion, so do .wav files that I had previously made and saved.
Windows normal sounds are unaffected as are music files. Even the music in the videos is normal while the speech is distorted.
When I played one of my videos that I have on Vimeo the voice is distorted. So something is affecting only the text to speech voices not any of the other sounds no matter what the source.
I don't have a clue, If I can't figure this out I'll have to go back to my Windows 8 backup image.I use TextAloud almost every day.
I updated my sound drivers, no change! SB Recon3D PCle sound card.
I just got a Dell Inspiron with Windows8 to replace my old XP system. Got files and software loaded, everything working. I code indicators and robots for forex trading and use the built-in editor (Meta-Editor) and it is working fine. I can call up the indicators and robots through the editor and re-edit or run them--no problem.
Then I went over to the File Explorer to move some of the indicator files around and -- weird! They are not there. All the previous files I loaded in earlier are there but since about the 1st of December, none of the files are there.
The folders and subfolders all work correctly in Editor but none of the newer ones are showing up on Explorer--I can build new folders in Explorer and they show up in Editor but whatever i build in Editor does not show up in Explorer--why could that be happening?
I am running 8.1 on a desktop and Yesterday the live tiles were working but today not one live tiles is updating. I have not made one change to my computer , not a thing.
I'm using a Sony vaio laptop E-Series and few days back I updated it to windows 8.1 and after few days it started to hang a lot so I tried to look for my Quick Heal Internet Security 2013 so that I can search for virus but later the system showed that it doesn't supports on windows 8.1 so I downloaded the new antivirus and activated the product and when the anti virus was updating itself the system got stuck. When I turn on my pc it gets stuck within 2-3 minutes I don't want to go to some service center or shit.
I just updated my Samsung series 7 ultra (NP740U3E) to windows 8.1 through the store, updated drivers through the SW update utility, and now I am getting non-stop BSOD. Sometimes Windows will load to a few seconds after login screen, sometimes I won't even get to the login screen until I get either IRQL not less or bad pool header BSOD. I have attached 3 dmp files. DMP file 13187-01 is with driver verifier enabled.
I recently updated my laptop from Windows 8 to 8.1. Before updating, I was able to play all of my games just fine, particularly Skyrim, on high or even max settings. After updating though, the first time I loaded a save game it took nearly between 5-10 minutes to load (compared to normal 1 at most). After that they are better, but still much slower than they used to be, and I can also barely even run Skyrim at the lowest possible graphics settings. I know that my computer has the capability to handle higher settings. Did the update change some setting in performance that I am not aware of?
since installing I now have a notification in the systray saying that " Files are up to date, last updated xxx minutes ago When I click on that notification icon, it takes me to a Sky drive folder, and within it is a documents, favorites, public, and shared favorites folders. When I double click those folders, there are no files within them.I do not have Skydrive set to upload, or sync, any files. So then should I be getting these notifications? Why would it show updating empty folders when Sky drive is not enabled? Is there a setting somewhere I should change.
