View 3 RepliesMany of my live tiles (Weather, Fitness, Music, Games) don't show anything aside from their logos. They are turned on. I've probably quadruple checked them at this point. For troubleshooting, I have:
Verified that those tiles are turned on.
Verified that the time service is running.
Verified that all the apps and/or their licenses are synced.
Uninstalled/reinstalled the apps.
Removed McAfee (replaced it with Avast free).
Run the UI diagnostic/repair tool that you guys have in one of the long stickied threads.
Verified that they're set to animate via appearance and performance settings.
It looks like the tiles are receiving data, as the Weather app currently has a little 'i' icon in the bottom right hand corner, and there is a weather alert in my area. It's just that there's no temperature/background. It's just the blue tile with white sun. Very odd.
Refreshing this computer is not an option, as I use it for work as well as general computing use.
For more than a week now, the above situation have been occurring. I have "scoured" the web and tried a lot of "solutions" and none as at yet have normalized my situation.
I am suspecting that I might need a registry solution, since I cannot refresh my installation- I upgraded to win 8 from win 7 online.
Also, the Skype app crashes almost as soon as it finishes loading and returns to the start menu. But, there is a sign it is still running and whenever you click on it, it trips off again.
I have uninstalled and re-installed several times, ran the apps troubleshooters many times, checked that the time service is running, synchronized this and that, etc to no avail.
My Mail Live tile do not have the option to turn on/off live update but the Calendar and People tiles have it yet none is updating.
Seen this on the start screen my live tiles on the top row and the bottom row gets cut off
Take a look here : [URL] ....
I can resolve it by resizing a tile but it cuts off again when i move a tile. Its obviously a bug if you take a look at both screenshots side by side.
When I go to customize a live tile, only get 2 choices when resizing (SMALL or MEDIUM).
Most other tiles can be resized in 4 sizes (SMALL,MEDIUM,WIDE,LARGE).
why or how to fix it? Where would I go to control it?
So, I was trying to add a fifth row to my Live Tiles screen, as I have 4.
According to this: [URL]...
There are a certain number of maximum rows you can add based on your screen resolution.
My screen has a 1366x768 (Not mentioned there). Based on that, I can only have 4 rows. But, what could happen if forced a fifth row with that registry hack?
I have to alt tab and then come back and then it works. Did they test this..? It doesn't do it on my laptops though.
1920x1080 is the display res at 120hz
Also the tiles ARE being clicked. They get punched in, but they don't actually do anything.
not that this is a hardware issue, but specs anyway:

I have the problem since a few weeks (mostly after a tile update), and I'm not the only one, my friend has it too on both his laptop and desktop, that the live tiles, or actually some of them, for example weather, are not refreshing anymore. It just shows the blue weather tile. When I open it, it works though, news the same. Also I tried to deinstall and reinstall the weather app, but now it doesnt even show the "use live tile" button anymore (look at picture).

View 1 Replies View RelatedThe metro photo app (that comes with Windows 8) is showing photos on the live tiles that were deleted over a week ago.
I've turns lives tiles on and off. I've unpinned from the start screen and then re-pinned. I deleted personal info from the tiles from the settings screen. I've verified that the photos are not on my computer (photo app is only showing the computer and skydrive).
Trying Windows 8 at work and bought new Samsung 700t tablet. Windows 8 works fine with local user (linked to live id) and all our software including Symantec Endpoint 12.1.2. As soon as I join to domain (server 2008) and reboot the live tiles no longer function. Have total reset several times and tried refresh and restore points. My guess is that has to be default behavior of Win 8 GPO compared to 2008 domain GPO. We are very plain on our policies and so far have not found anything on local computer or GPO that can correct issues.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAssume Is started a new Win8 system. Then at first the tile/frames overview appear.
When I click now on one of the tiles/frames (e.g. fin, news,...) then I jump to the corresponding section. Fine.
But how do I return to the tiles/frames overview?
I tried ESC key but this didn't work.
I found no "RETURN to overview" link/button neither.
Whats the magic key press?
I am having a problem updating one of my machines (KMS activated Pro Windows 8 VL) to Windows 8.1.
I cannot update from the store (as expected) and trying to update from any iso I have, it wants to remove everything except my documents. I would ultimately like to update this machine to 8.1 update 1 without reinstall if at all possible.
Is there a standalone installer for going 8 >> 8.1?
Right now, if I rename a file in windows explorer, or right click->create new folder (or new file), or do a bunch of other things, I don't see the result of the action (i.e., the file's name stays the same, or the new folder/file doesn't appear) until I click away to another folder, and then back to the one I did the action in.
Why is this happening, and how can I fix it? I haven't explicitly changed anything recently, though maybe an update broke something.
I am using Windows 8.
I've been trying to update to Windows 8.1 but I keep having issues. I constantly have failing Windows Updates. I have tried a couple different things, renaming the SoftwareDistribution file to .old, Windows Repair, and full clean install of Windows 8. I for the life of me can't figure out what's going on.
Currently, I am unable to install the SF_Diagnostic tool for some reason. It's hung up on downloading the necessary files from Windows Features. I have a mini dump from Windows 8 attached and will try to update it with the SF_Diag tool if it ever installs.
Edit: had to manually enable .NET Framework in order to get the diagnostic tool to install. The mini dump is still the same regardless so I'll keep that there.
I updated my Windows 8 to 8.1 version, and after I installed recommended updates for 8.1, my laptop restarted and from that time I cant log in anymore, when i type anything it says wrong password or username, but when i type correct it says Invalid pointer, and now i cant nothing, i cant even start in safe mode.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just got a Dell Inspiron with Windows8 to replace my old XP system. Got files and software loaded, everything working. I code indicators and robots for forex trading and use the built-in editor (Meta-Editor) and it is working fine. I can call up the indicators and robots through the editor and re-edit or run them--no problem.
Then I went over to the File Explorer to move some of the indicator files around and -- weird! They are not there. All the previous files I loaded in earlier are there but since about the 1st of December, none of the files are there.
The folders and subfolders all work correctly in Editor but none of the newer ones are showing up on Explorer--I can build new folders in Explorer and they show up in Editor but whatever i build in Editor does not show up in Explorer--why could that be happening?
I recently noticed that my windows was not able to update properly and few updates are failing on a daily basis.. screen shot showing the updates-

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just updated my Samsung series 7 ultra (NP740U3E) to windows 8.1 through the store, updated drivers through the SW update utility, and now I am getting non-stop BSOD. Sometimes Windows will load to a few seconds after login screen, sometimes I won't even get to the login screen until I get either IRQL not less or bad pool header BSOD. I have attached 3 dmp files. DMP file 13187-01 is with driver verifier enabled.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a machine that has an activated retail windows 8 that came from the upgrade offer.
I just downloaded the 8.1 RTM from technet and burned the ISO install media to a DVD.
Will it work to upgrade the retail windows 8 with the RTM DVD by simply doing a setup.exe from within windows 8?
Will it retain the original permanent retail key after the upgrade?
Also, I'm assuming that any additional changes to the 8.1 will come through online updates so it will get caught up to whatever is released to the general public?
After updating from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 my PC doesn't seem to want to sleep.
I've done some googling and cant really find anything. I found a command prompt thing I should do. I did that and it said nothing was keeping my computer awake.
I have a notebook with windows 8 OEM. In the past I have experimented with dual-booting other OSs, then deleting them and now I have a few extra partitions in my drive. I was wondering if this community could tell me what partitions are safe to merge to my "working" volume (C: or E: ). I have some screenshots of Disk Management and Disk Internals Linux Reader windows. I think there's a better way of showing You the contents of my volumes, but I don't know what program to use.

I also have a few questions: Is my windows 8 OEM inside my hard drive? For example, if I format my whole hard disk completely, would I lose the OEM?
Can I replace my windows 8 OEM with windows 8.1 OEM or even with custom windows 8.1 OEM (for example: fully updated one, if it's possible)?
Windows Defender won't update its anti malware definitions... as of now they are a few days old. Manually pressing the "update" button won't do a thing. Also, when trying to update from the cmd prompt, I am told that no update is needed since everything is up-to-date.
View 4 Replies View RelatedFor the past few weeks I have been getting this weird occurrence every time I try to install & update my Windows 8.1 64x-based System. No matter what update it is (except for the security updates) I get a black screen whenever i reset my computer and log back in. The mouse just shows up periodically and seems to be loading something; based on the fact that the loading cursor is being shown. I've waited hours before and nothing shows up. Only way to get my computer back to working order is by loading a system restore point.
P.S. I should also note that a white computer icon shows on the bottom left of my screen after updating as well. It comes and goes just like my cursor.
Yesterday I formatted my computer and today I was updating it to Windows 8.1 again. Everything was fine except I forgot to disconnect my hdd. During the update, it said it was detecting and fixing errors. When the update finished, I tried to open my hdd and it wasn't accessible. How can I recover the data?
View 7 Replies View Relatedhow I may update my Windows 8 Pro computer to 8.1 and then to the 8.1 update, if possible.
It's a volume licensed copy of Windows and I have no access to these updates. From what I've read, I need an MSN (what ever it's called) subscription to have access to these updates. I've seen articles around the web with ways to update, such as this one William's Blog: How to upgrade Windows 8 volume license to Windows 8.1 from the Windows Store but I do not want to do anything illegal or mess up my computer.
Does the Nokia Lumia Icon can be updated to 8.1 yet?
I do not want to buy it unless I know and I have been to At+T Verizon and called each. I also have used the web for information. I still cannot get a definitive answer. I could not get through to Nokia or Verizon tech support.
My laptop came with pre-installed windows 8 from HP manufacturer, I heard that if we do update to windows 8.1 then hardware drivers and software issues might occur.
I want to know that may I update my laptop without being afraid to lost anything or I have to stick with my current windows 8 that came along with my laptop.
