Maintenance :: Duplicate Processes Of Applications
Jul 7, 2013So today I came through this situation. there are duplicate processes created by applications. Like google chrome, norton's executable files.

View 1 RepliesI have noticed that applications that are launched from the Metro IU load and run much faster than the same applications launched from IE under desktop. I have even created Metro tiles for applications I normally run as they load and run much faster than launching them from the desktop. This site (Windows Eight Forms) would not load from desktop IE but loads immediately from a Metro tile I created.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI want to play an HD video though a projector on my laptop. The laptop plays it fine, but I'm worried about things like Windows updates, virus scans and other processes suddenly slowing it down or displaying messages on the screen while the audience are watching it. I know how to disable some of these things manually, but its easy to forget something and I was just wondering if there is some sort of "minimal" mode where only the bare essentials are running? For reasons I won't bore you with, burning to DVD or Blu Ray will not work in this instance, a hardware media player might, but I want to explore this option first.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have recently upgraded to Windows 8 from Windows 7. I experience CPU throttling whenever I run GPU intensive activities. For instance when running Crysis 3, I have a constant fps of around 40 and then after a few minutes there is a barely noticeable black screen flash after which my fps drops to around 4fps. On MSI afterburner my GPU usage stays constant at 99%, but my core clock, shader clock and memory clock drops significantly:
This is not due to temp. It stays constant at around 70. I have also tried changing the power options for the processor (Min Processor states). No change. I have also used throttlestop to disable the BD PROCHOT, EIST, C1E. Still no change.
Everything was fine on Wind 7. System specs:
I also have a Toshiba Dynadock usb 3.0 which underperforms w.r.t responsiveness. It uses Displaylink drivers. I have removed all the Dynadock's drivers and unplugged it. No change. I have also updated my Nvidia drivers. No change.
Running Win 8.1 on HP laptop.
Task Manager shows Disk at 100% but only a couple on tasks show any HDD activity.
I assume that there are hidden processing eating up my HDD (and CPU).
How do I see what else is running?
I know you can open up resource monitor, and look at the disk tab for the information, but, I am looking for a way to log all of that to a file, so I can see over time, how many bytes are written for each process that is running. Anytool that I can do this with?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am currently using Windows 8 Professional (x64) as an administrator. My issue is that often certain programs or software do not exit properly and show up on Task manager as background processes. The issue is that I cannot end these processes because "Access is Denied" and must therefore restart my computer in order to run these programs. A simple example is Skype. When I quit Skype, it will show up as a background process on Task manager and I cannot end the process. If I try to sign into my Skype account again, it says that I am already logged in from this computer. Battlefield 4 is another example. I've never had this issue with Skype or BF4 previously, nor do I remember installing something significant that may have made changes to my PC.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an HP 2000 Notebook that I recently did a reinstall of Windows 8 from my recovery drive due to what seemed like huge amounts of background activity and the systems constant failure at keeping track of my folders and files. So off I went for round two. First to make it to the top of my "what is annoying me the most about this OS" list was the fact that I had to wait four hours for windows to retrieve 115 updates then another near four hours for windows to Configure 115 updates which was not too surprising but THEN, windows gets to update number 114 and decides that it's just too much trouble to configure updates built for itself by the very people who created IT and FAILS the entire process!
The message I get is that because it failed, It is now going to revert the system back to it's original state before the updates which took another couple of hours! So an entire day of being without the use of my laptop and all for nothing!
Now, the most recent issue is the fact that there are so darn many windows background processes going at any given time that it is affecting performance. I actually noticed in task manager a windows host app holding over 10 child processes that were consuming over 300MB of memory! My question is, how many of these background memory hogs do I really need?
After I launch IE11 and then close it(with all tabs), then I open the Task Manager on the Processes tab and there are 3 IE11 instances still open and no matter how many times I end these tasks, they'll immediately open again, consuming my ram AND CPU. That's why I started using Chrome. Still, I'd like to know what causes this bug with IE11 in 8.1.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThis is a new tablet and I am just getting used to Windows 8.1 .
I messed up when I moved folders from being stored in c: to d:.
I now have duplicate folders for pictures, video's etc in Drive D:
How do I correct this ? Can I delete all the folders in D and start again? ( this is a new computer and there is no content in any of these folders)
I also notice that in file explorer I have three main folders with almost the same subfolder structure . The folders are:
a) Myname ( with a picture icon) . Subfolders : Tablet name > documents, music etc
b) Myname: Subfolders : contacts, desktop, favorites, skydrive etc
c) This PC : subfolders: documents, downloads , folders that contain places I connected to through my network) , . C:/, D:/ , libraries etc
Why so many duplicates ? How can I clean this up so there is only the This PC ( I believe this was the original Folder before I messed around ) .
I copied and pasted a bunch of files into the same folder.
Now there is a lot of redundancy and too many files to be removed one by one.
There are all files with a "- Copy" in front of their original name.
How do I remove these files?
New at this site and with windows 8.1, quite a change from XP. I am setting up a alienate PC and I would like to copy the start page (metro) that I have set to an additional user, I did copy my appsfolder.itemdata-ms to C:usermicrosoft....appsfolder.itemdata-ms but I still do not get the same layout or apps as mine. What I am trying is to have the same layout and apps for all users without having to re-arrange each user start screen.
View 1 Replies View Relatedwhile using CCleaner I have found a lot of duplicate files in the file finder section. Is it safe to delete the duplicate of these files or should I leave them alone.
View 4 Replies View RelatedMy friend has 3 or 4 hard drives with personal files that she wants me to combine into one hard drive. She says there will be many duplicate files and we need to eliminate them. What would be the best way to go about doing that?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've installed Windows 8 on an xtreemer ultra media center. It's connected to a projector and a touch screen monitor in duplicate screen mode. Sometimes I would like to keep projector off and only use monitor.
Problem is when I turn off the projector. You hear the sound that windows detects a disconnected device. The image changes to a clean desktop (used to be lock screen, but I disabled that). And system becomes unresponsive. No cursor can be found. No metro interface. Microsoft+p is not displaying. Tried everything I can think of.
I use SkyDrive as my cloud storage and have 5GB of files in it.
But I want it to be IN THE CLOUD and hidden, not accesible to everyone using my laptop and not duplicate copies of the files in my hard disk (actually triplicate copies).
For example, let's say my 3GB music collection. I keep a copy in my hard disk within "My Music", a copy in the cloud in Skydrive, but now I have a third copy in my hard disk within the Skydrive folder, which I didn't want and I wasn't asked about.
Microsoft assumed I want this third copy for some reason and downloaded everything automatically to this Skydrive folder. Great.
So, the first thing I do is uninstalling Skydrive, if I want to upload something I do it via browser, but the folder and copy of my files is still there.
My question is, can I delete those files, my music collection and so on without deleting at the same time the copy in the cloud? I mean, if I delete them here they will be deleted in the cloud too?
Basically I have an ASus ux301la (zenbook infinity) and i noticed that after installing Displaylinks software (port replicator software) my default sound device was called (USB AUDIO) and that my Realtek sound device kind of went missing (no sound devices on the playback tab in the sound settings). I had no backups at teh time as its a new laptop and i really dont want to re-install 8.1 from scratch as it took me over a day to configure this thing to my personal config.
So I uninstalled the diplaylink software and uninstalled/reinstalled the sound drivers from the asus site and each time i did so it would create a new sound entry, hence all teh duplicates. Now i still have a problem because although sound works, i have to manually select the correct playback device in VLC player and I cannot see any sound devices in the playback tab on SOUND settings.
I am running iCloud on multiple PC's. Everything was fine until I had it running on two 8.1 PC's, then I started having problems.
In total, iCloud was running on one Win 7 Pro PC and two Windows 8.1 PC's. My theory is that the two Windows 8.1 PC's were syncing via iCloud and Skydrive (or Onedrive) which is set up by default. But they were able to read each other's settings okay. But Win 7 doesn't have the same sync settings, so the bookmarks were being written in 8.1 and then multiplying in Win 7.
I'm not sure, but this is my theory. Running on all Win 7 is okay. Running on all Win 8.1 seems okay. But combining the two OS's with iCloud seems to cause some problems.
I can not boot my Toshiba laptop Windows 8.1 computer after I was attempting to resize partitions. I got in over my head. Now I'm stuck and cannot boot.
I believe the problem is I somehow created a second copy of my EFI partition. Now I have two "system" partitions of the same size.
Cannot boot, but got a command prompt. Ran "bcdedit" and got:
"The boot configuration data store could not be opened. The requested system device cannot be identified due to multiple indistinguishable devices potentially matching the identification criteria."
Other things I uncovered:
Diskpart> list partition
Partition 1 System
Partition 2 System
Partition 3 Reserved
Partition 4 Primary
Partition 5 Recovery
Partition 6 Recovery
(note both partitons 1 & 2 say "System" for type.)
Diskpart> Select Partition 1detail partition * Volume 2 System NTFS Partition 352 MB Healthy Hidden
Diskpart> Select Partition 2detail partition * Volume 3 FAT32 Partition 352 MB Healthy Hidden
I conclude that Partition 1 equates to Volume 2, Partition 2 to Volume 3. However there is no longer a "System" label on Part 2/Vol 3 once drilled down to details. Also its FAT32.
I am hoping/praying that I could "delete" one of the duplicate partitions. But scared to make any such move. Not sure where to go from here.
Before installing Windows 8.1 anything that I put into my Skydrive folder (I had the desktop app) were automatically synced to Skydrive.com as well as my Android phone app, and anything I uploaded from my phone app were synced to Skydrive.com and were automatically downloaded to my Skydrive folder. Now my phone app and Skydrive.com still work fine, but the Skydrive folder does not. That is, nothing gets downloaded to my Skydrive folder and nothing gets uploaded to Skydrive.com from it.
I've tried different settings for it, I've tried offline only, online only, I've toggled settings in the Settings app, and nothing.
Something else that happens is that now there are duplicates of all of the files in the My Documents folder. Say that my PC is named Smith-PC. Now, for example, there is a file called Random Document.docx and Random Document-Smith-PC.docx. And this is for every single file in the My Documents folder. Furthermore, only the version with the Smith-PC in the name works. When I open the normally named file, I get an error:
"An unexpected error is keeping you from copying the file. If you continue to receive this error, you can use the error code to search for solution of this problem. Error 0x80070490: Element not found."
This is really annoying and now I have duplicates of all of my documents, half of which won't open and the other half which are named wrong with Smith-PC at the end of all of them.
My 8.1 laptop shows multiple network connections to my Samsung Smart TV --- One as "media connections" and 3 as "other connections". Both devices are on a simple wireless network using Linksys WRT54GS.
Under the "Network" page, most of the "Properties" of the TV connections are the same except for "Serial Number" and "Unique Identifier". Did I do something wrong when setting things up? Are these extra connections harmful? Should I delete some? How?
I have a windows 8 laptop and today the sound just stopped working. The windows audio service will not enable and everytime i try to enable it fails due to a duplicate in Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
Now tricky part is i cant open control panel as it doesn't load, i tried reinstalling windows 8 but it also not load. This all was working perfectly just earlier today. I have no sound, just an x by the sound.
when in second screen all the options work axcept for the duplicate screen ,which is the screen that I want, the tv tv screen say not supported, however the extended screen and the second screen only all work ok,what can I do to get the duplicate screen option to display
View 2 Replies View RelatedI built a new computer, and now have both a SSD and HDD setup. My intention was to have the SSD be only for Windows and use the HDD for everything else. I feel like that everything I download is going to the SDD and I am not getting any prompts for where to install applications.
For example, I just installed Office and was planning to install it on the HDD. I checked the SSD, and sure enough, there is a folder for Office. On a related note, the install setup everything for Office including OneDrive for Business. I don't need OneDrive for Business. Should there have been a prompt to select what Office applications I wanted to install?
I don't seem to be able to drag and drop anymore in more than one application, so it should be Windows, not the applications.
I did restart the laptop, but it didn't work.
I upgraded to Windows 8 about a month ago, and quite frankly I have never had so many problems on my previous operating systems (95, 98, 98SE, 2000NT, XP Home, XP Professional) as I have on this.
I have had to completely reinstall Windows 8 three times now due to things going wrong, such as;
1. 'Change PC Settings' became inoperative after a few days, nothing happens when I click on it.
2. The 'Desktop' Tile all of a sudden disappeared from the main start-up apps.
3. Some of my Desktop Shortcut Icons have turned blank just showing just a 'White Paper' Icon.
4. Some programs when I launch, say the I don't have Administration Rights to access the program, when I do have admin rights.
I notice looking through the posts in the forum that these problems come up very often, I have tried to fix them following other users advice but no joy.
I have the latest drivers, this includes my Graphics Display driver which is the latest version.
So whats going on with Windows 8, its the worst version of windows I've came across, when are the techies going to do something about these common problems, as I'm defiant to reinstall it all again which takes me all day due to the amount of software I have to reinstall.
sometimes when I type keys on the keyboard applications seem to appear. This happens quite a lot, I keep clicking control button and it eventually gets back to normal.
View 2 Replies View RelatedThe only way I've found to add app icons to the desktop is to go to the All Apps screen, right click, go to file location, then add a shortcut to the desktop from there. Is there an easier way?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have installed Windows 8.1 64 bit on a new motherboard using a Logitech K120 keyboard. After using the system for a few weeks I have decide to put on a better keyboard. After swapping keyboards the system runs fine until I reboot. At that time Windows starts up as if it has never run before giving the "Hi" and "Adding applications" messages and then going to the normal tiles screen but it can find no applications. Rebooting give the same results. If I change the keyboard back and reboot, everything comes up fine.
I have tried 3 different keyboards, 2 different Microsoft and 1 Dell, with the same results. As far as I can tell, Windows 8 only works with the keyboard that was used to install it and can never be changed.
The only software running was Start8 to actually make Windows 8 useful but I removed that and confirm that the problem still existed without it.
My principal problem with my new Windows 8, and which never occurred with XP, Vista or W7, is that if I am streaming a radio programme through Chrome, then wish to work, with Word for example, the radio cuts out until I return to Chrome. How can I make both radio and Word work simultaneously ?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI just installed Windows 8 a few days ago. It took some time to put together the partitions and programs I wanted to install on my new SSD and set up the external storage drive with my old hard drive, but it was totally worth the effort. I love the operating system and how it works with my desktop and hardware. It boots quickly, the themes are aesthetically pleasing, and access to everything is far easier to navigate.
However, I do have some issues with the Metro Menu / Applications. I have downloaded several applications, notably Twitter and Skype. Those two applications have been snapped into the left side of my screen. While they are useful and important to me, what troubles me is that I don't have a copy / cut function for either application.
Is there a way to add that feature to both applications? I would much rather avoid the clutter of a desktop Skype program or view Twitter via Google Chrome.
