How To Open Group Policy To Edit Not Asking For Password When Restoring From Monitor Turned Off
Jul 14, 2013
I'm setting up a new Dell with W-8 Home. I'm trying to open the Group Policy to edit not asking for password when restoring from "Monitor" turned off. Already stopped it on logon. Attached is the message I get either from Run or the cmd prompt.

I have relatively new PC with Windows 8.1 but recently I am getting a message on start up that "Windows could not connect to Group Policy service" . This then asks me to look at the Event log. I notice that the Event log has " Special log on " every time I log on . Are theses messages related ? Is this normal ? Have I a bug of some description? I have ran Norton 360 and malwarebytes - nothing reported.

I've looked at the Group Policy Search with Azure, but I don't have a clue as to how to find the correct key to add to the Home Group Policy in the registry. I need to get rid of whatever policy is causing this error message every time I try to install Corel's PaintShop Pro x5 in D:Program Files (x86):
This installation is forbidden by system policy. Contact your system administrator.
This "sounds" like it might be what I need, but I wouldn't dare mess with the registry without being sure.
"Configure software Installation policy processing" Group Policy Search
But whatever I need to use - I would need hand holding on how to use it!

I recently updated two of my computers to Windows 8.1 and One thing that seems to be a public nuisance is having to use a Microsoft Account to have a syncing onedrive folder. This aside I have been trying to get File/Printer Sharing working between a file server and a client.
With my previous W7 setup I would create custom groups for access to certain file sets and it would all go off without a hitch, the same is true with Windows 8.1 and local accounts. The issue comes in when I try to link a MS account to said local account, at this point it seems to ignore the group permissions. Below is a diagram of the setup and the expected/actual results.
Code: = Windows 8.1 File Server =- Added localuser test1- Added user to administrators group- Link test1 to MSAccount- Verified user is still part of administrators group- Give Administrators Read-Write permission and Security on the relevant share and files= Windows 8.1 Client =- Added localuser test1- Added user to administrators group- Link test1 to MSAccount- Verified user is still part of administrators group
With this setup, if I try to write a file to the share in question, I get an access denied, but if I instead explicitly give test1 Read-Write access to the share then the user can write files as expected. If I unlink the MSAccount from the localaccount then the share works as expected with out the user-explicit permissions. Finally, after I have tested the localaccount is working, if I link the accounts back to the Microsoft Account it once again stops working. It seems like MS screwed the pooch on this one and completely broke it's own group policy permission compatibility.

I installed the win 8 upgrade on my desktop yesterday. I have two monitors connected but only one of them was working, even though I upgraded the drivers for the graphicscard, I wasn't able to enable the other monitor. This is, however, not my problem.. As part of me trying to figure it out, I hit the "Devices" button in the menu and disabled the only monitor on there. I thought it was the one which wasn't working, but it turned out to be the one already working, so now none of the monitors are on and how to get them working again.
I'm guess that I'm looking for some sort of a keyboard shortcut to enable the monitor again.

Recently my monitor stopped responding after being turned off (after 15 minutes). It didn't happen before. I don't know what to do. Should I disable turning off the monitor altogether? I lose all my work when this happens because the only way to get the laptop working again is to press the power button which restarts the computer although the settings are actually that it should go into hibernation when I press the power button, which it does if the display is working, but if it stops responding it restarts the laptop. No other keys work or do anything when this happens.

My system os is windows 8.1. I connect to this system remotely regularly. When it is off, I turn it on remotely with WOL and it autologins into windows.
This computer is connected to a LG LED TV through HDMI port.
My issue is, whenever the TV is off, and I turn on the computer (remotely or locally), system boots up fine but the start up apps (those that I have put in Windows startup folder) won't start. As soon as I turn on the TV, windows will start running those start up apps. Needless to say that if the TV is on and I boot into wondows, start up apps start normally with no problem.
Whatever I tried has failed on me. I even tried to turn off windows 8 Fast Startup in power options but it didn't work. I originally had this issue in windows 8. So I installed windows 8.1 hoping that this issue would be gone but it has not. I tried windows server 2012. In server 2012, this issue does not exist and I have no problem with startup apps.

i installed windows 8 on my new pc who includes Shappire 7870 xt boost and monitor Samsung T220. whether i turned off the monitor manually or it turns off automatic by power saver, sometimes the monitor shows only black screen. The monitor does turns on, it's light turn on, but all i get is black screen.
i also have I5 4570 and Gigabyte GA-B85M-D3H.after i installed windows, i installed the motherboard drivers, includes Intel HD Graphics 4600. Could it conflicts with the ATI's driver?
also, when i connect the monitor to the motherboard it works fine (so far at least). but games doesn't run smoothly.

So recently I was switching my desktop background repeatedly, trying out a few images because i wanted to change it. I had been using the right click menu on images, using the available option to 'set as desktop background'. Then, for no apparent reason that option dissapeared, along with the bolded 'open', 'edit', and 'print' options. not only that, but it seems to have slightly rearranged the menu as well as added a few new 'options' that do absolutely nothing when i try to use them.
Preview, rotate right, and rotate left do nothing whatsoever. Open would have opened it in an image viewer i downloaded and set to default, and edit would have opened it in Paint. Images aren't the only things affected. it seems to have happened to .txt files and video files, except the preview and rotate options don't appear.
I can still double click to open these files in their default programs, and use the newly bolded 'open with' drop-down menu to open image sin paint, but it would be nice to have my normal options back.

Windows 8. When the monitor turns off on my laptop, it locks the computer and when i wake it i have to enter the password again, i wish to disable this option not to be have to enter password every time i wake the laptop.
I searched a solution and the closest thing i saw is "require a password when waking the computer" the problem is if i disable this option there is no password even when waking from hibernation/sleep.
I wish to keep password protection when returning from hibernation/sleep but not when the monitor just turns off. Is it possible?

I have Windows 8 Pro, and a laptop.
My power settings say, while on battery, dim the display at 2min, turn off the monitor at 5min and put the computer to sleep after 15 minutes.
Is there a way to instruct Windows 8 that at the 5min mark, when it turns off my display to conserve power that I can avoid it going to the lock screen and then requiring my password? So, just turn off the display, but don't lock the computer?
I still would like the lock screen image to display if I hit WindowsKey+L. And I still want my computer to lock after it's been asleep (past the 15 minute mark), so the group policy stuff to "Do not display the lock screen" will not accomplish what I want.

I just had to reformat my hard drive and when I did I went ahead and updated to windows 8.1. I have everything set back up the way I like but I can't get the start menu to always open on my secondary monitor. I can set it to open on whatever monitor I'm currently using, but I only want it to open on the one specific monitor that ISN'T my main display.
I've tried using windows key + shift + arrows and that moves the start menu to the right monitor, but only that time. When I reopen it, it just pops up on my main display.
I've tried clicking on the bottom left of the second monitor and opening the start menu, but when I hit the windows key again it opens it on the main monitor.

Is there a way to make Windows 8 remember what screen you closed a program on and open it in that window? Right now, I have most of the stuff I open pinned to the task bar. How it opens now is what ever monitor I click on the program in, it opens it in that monitor. I understand the logic on that, but I was wondering if there was a way to make programs always open on a specific monitor. I.e. I always have outlook on my monitor clear to the left, visual studio in the middle, and my browser on the right. Is there a way to force those programs to always open on that monitor, regardless of which task bar I click on?

I'm having a little issue with my Screen Setup and I was wondering if there's a fix to that.
I recently upgraded from to Photoshop CC after seeing a YouTube Video with someone working on the same Wacom Cintiq 24HD Touch I have using the newly introduced Experimental Touch features of PS CC.
Turns out it didn't worked THAT well on mine.
Panning, Zooming and Rotation in PS CC is totally screwed like the axis of them being totally off or outside my Screen and thus causing my Workspace to vanish off screen which is REALLY annoying.
Working with the Issue for a while I noticed that the issue could be related to me using multiple Monitors unlike the Video which only used one and the Cintiq with the Touch Interface NOT being either the center or rather the Main Monitor of the Setup.
Having the Cintiq not as the Main Monitor causes Photoshop CC to relocate the Rotational, Zoom and Move Axis to the Main Monitor and thus cause this agonizing behavior. With the Cintiq now set as the Main Monitor every Metro App I use ( including the Start Screen ) opens out of my normal Field of View.Is there a setting that allows me to keep the Cintiq ( 2 ) to be the Main Monitor because of Photoshop while having Metro Apps open by default on the Center Monitor ( 1 ) ?
I do know that hitting the Windows button in the Task bar will open the Start Screen on the screen it was hit and all Metro Apps opened from there will also open on the now active screen but working like this is kind of cumbersome as I prefer to use a Mouse button ( or the Keyboard Windows Key ) with the Windows Key assigned and there it just doesn't work like I want.

I started using a second monitor recently, and ran into an issue when opening a folder. When I try to open any folder both screens will flash grey and then go back to normal, but the folder won't open. If I try again then the folder will open with no grey flash. If I switch back to just one screen, the same thing will happen, along with all of my icons being rearranged.

I was playing around trying to get rid of a "Could not reconnect all network drives" error at boot. One I found said to do the following:
Type gpedit.msc on the search box in the menu bar,
1. Select "Windows Settings", then
2. Select "Security Settings", then
3. Select "Local Policies", then
4. Then highlight "Security Options", from there look on the right pane
5. Then select Network security: LAN Manager authentication level and set the drop down menu to "Send LM & NTLM "use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated".
That had no effect for me so I want to Disable the policy but there is no way to do that I can see. I failed to note what it was set to initially so I'm not sure if it was Disabled or not and if not what value it should have. Google tells me the default for Win 7 was Send NTLMv2 responses only so that's what I set it to but I think it was set to Disable.
I just checked Win 8 Pro X86 in a Oracle Virtual Box Client and it's Not Defined. So, how do I make it Not Defined again?

I configured my Windows 8 machines to use my corporate email (which was on premise Exchange 2010). As soon as I did, it would lock me out after X amount of inactivity and require a password upon my return.
I know, security is important... but I work from home, in my own office. I don't have snoops skulking around my desk, so I'd like to make this go away.
1) Where on my server do I smurf that requirement
2) I've removed that account from one of my devices, but the setting is still there, and says it's controlled by administrative policy even still... where can I remove that from this device?

Today I plugged an hdmi to vga cable into my Win 8 sony vaio, and I plugged the other VGA side of the cable into an acee 22" monitor. I then chose from the right hand windows 8 panel to "extend to monitor", the laptop screen went black, the monitor screen remained without signal (extended screen did not show on monitor) and now the laptop screen is black.
I am now stuck and both laptop and monitor screen not working.
I tried unplugging cable, pressing fn and all the f1 to f12, shift, windows button but nothing is working.
I pressed off button then switched laptop back on and it showed the sony vaio logo on laptop then the screen went black again.
how could I return my laptop screen to work and stop the screen extension which is not working and which I am sure is the case.
Any buttons on keyboard to click at all?

My main PC is a desktop running Windows 7 and my homegroup was set up on this PC. I have a laptop running Windows 8 and joined the homegroup - seemingly successfully as the control panel indicates that it is in the group.
On the W7 desktop. The homegroup icon lists the laptop and allows me to access the laptop files. The network icon lists both the desktop and the laptop. I could also access the laptop files this way, but do not need to as I can access them via the homegroup icon.
On the Windows 8 laptop. The homegroup icon just lists the laptop user name and then the laptop itself. The desktop is not listed. The network icon lists both the laptop and the desktop. This allows me to access the desktop files, but I would prefer to access them via the the homegroup icon.
