Network / Sharing :: Internet Works In Desktop But Not In Start Screen
Dec 15, 2013
Since I installed some "critical" updates from microsoft, there have been some network problems. The main problem that I noticed was that the ethernet appeared as "limited". Then, as I logged in, internet was actually working fine, but that was in desktop mode. Now, as I try to run an app from start screen, it said that there was no internet connection...
So I went to troubleshoot the problem but nothing was found. The other thing I noticed was that, by opening the "Network and Sharing center", there appeared something unusual:
I also booted up to safe mode with network to see if it still persisted, and it still continued limited and while opening the network and sharing center, it still showed that thing on the image.
All this happened just after installing and restarting for the new update, and so, I also tried to restore the system to the point before the update, but it was proven to be unsuccessful, in the end appearing a message saying that it must have not been successful because of the antivirus being enabled at the time (I doubt it), or because of an unknown error.
I recently did a clean install of a full version of Windows 8 on my computer. Some of my Apps on the start screen, ie Weather, News, Maps, Travel, Skydrive and other Apps such as Slacker Radio and Weather Radar Pro will open but give me a "no connection to the internet" message. If I switch over to my Desktop I have an internet connection.
I checked the charm bar/settings/Internet Access and it says "no connections available". The curious thing is the Live Tiles for the News and Travel will update and show the latest information, yet when I open them I get the "no connection available" message. I have no problem with the Store App, Explorer, Email or Music App. Those seem to work fine.
I removed my Anti-virus software, re-installed the Apps and still get the same results. For my internet connection I'm using a Virgin Mobile OverDrivePro2E7 WiFi Hub. I'm not using the Wifi, it is plugged directly into my computer via a USB port. If I go into Control Panel/Network Connections it shows up as EtherNet2 with a strong connection.
So last week I bought a new laptop, an HP Envy m6 with Windows 8 already installed in. It was working fine, till I came home today to find that my wi-fi adapter is turned off, no big deal I just went to networks and enabled it.
Now, it says I have internet connection to my wi-fi router, all five bars but whenever I use browers such as Chrome or IE it will not load.
Now I have an old computer, a Lenovo B560 that works perfectally fine. Chrome, and IE.
The problem is not that I don't have connection or limited, its the fact that my browsers are not loading/acting as if I do not have a problem.
I've called Microsoft, I've been through fourms but I am so lost. I'm told that it's my router but how can it be when my Windiws 7 Home-Premiun is fine, but why Windows 8 is not?
If I restart my router then my wireless says it is limited on my Windows 8, if I restart my Windows 8 I will have browser's for five minutes (techianlly 4 minutes and 35-55 seconds) and then it will shut off.
The desktopUI all my software can connect fine to the internets, browsers, emaiclients, games etc etc. On the MetroUI nothing connects to the internet. for example with the windows app store i get the message (roughly translated from Dutch) "Windows store didn't connect to server or timed out, wait a few minutes and try again" clicking the back button top right, or the try again "link" have no response whatsoever.

Code: ------------------System Information------------------Time of this report: 5/11/2013, 18:28:38 Machine name: WOLFDEN-HQ Operating System: Windows 8 64-bit (6.2, Build 9200) (9200.win8_gdr.130306-1502) Language: Dutch (Regional Setting: Dutch) System Manufacturer: MEDION System Model: MS-7797
I have installed Windows 8 RP, and everything works fine, except I cannot access internet from metro apps: IE, Store, New, Mail etc. Does not access internet, even though I have access to internet from Desktop? I have tried everything, and googled for hours without any useful result.
I upgraded my Windows 7 laptop to Windows 8 and none of the apps work and they all show offline. When I open the desktop I can use the internet with no problem. In the network and sharing options it says that I am not connected to a network when clearly I am so I'm guessing it is possibly a network/IPv6 issue?
I have both a laptop and a desktop, both of which were running Windows 8 until recently, with the desktop not having a wireless internet card. In order to connect it to the internet, I had to pass the internet through it via ethernet cable from my laptop. Well, not that long ago, I updated my laptop to Windows 8.1, and now my desktop recognizes the connection, but I cannot get online at all with it.
i have just discovered my desktop mode is completely dead of internet connection, I cant use utorrent or email etc. the metro works fine its just the desktop that's dead. I run wireless
Two days ago my ISP replaced my modem-router for a new one. Ever since the replacement, my main desktop computer won't connect to the internet "immediately". I checked the connection via ethernet and WiFi with my other computers (even tested every single one of my ethernet cables) and they work perfectly fine, except for my main desktop computer.
What my desktop does:
When I turn it on I have to wait for around an hour before it connects to the internet. During that hour, it attempts to identify something (I guess the IP? - the yellow warning icon gets displayed) and after 3 seconds of attempting, the connection drops and it goes back to saying "No connection". The connection is being made via Ethernet cable and I tried the troubleshoot but it continues to say that I need to plug-in a ethernet cable to my computer, thing is it is already plugged in and like I stated above, the cable worked fine with all my other computers. My desktop used to work perfectly fine with my old modem-router.
I attempted to do do some troubleshooting refreshing my ip using the cmd with admin privileges but nothing worked as it said every time that there was no media connection. My desktop just randomly connects to the internet by itself after an hour of attempting to connect and disconnecting and once it gets connected it works perfectly fine until I restart my computer or turn it off and then the next day it'll be the same thing over again.
This has gotten extremely annoying, what can I do to fix this and further prevent it from happening? - I updated all my drivers and it's still the same. It'll just connect to the internet whenever it wants to.
My web browsers only seem to work when Im downloading something with utorrent. If I stop utorrent from downloading, my browser(chrome) no longer loads a website or loads extremely slow. When Im downloading something on utorrent everything is fine, internet works great. I had to limit the download rate so it doesnt use all my speed though. Its kind of like my internet has to charge up by download on utorrent, then feeds my web browser speed and/or connectivity.
The problem seem to have started when I was using connectify to create a hotspot for my neighbor to use for internet off of me without him connecting directly to my wifi. I have uninstalled connectify, did a dns flush, and did a netsh int ip reset.
My web browser's works fine, all 3 in fact (Chrome,Firefox, Explorer) however, when I open my steam app (gaming program) it keeps telling me it is not establishing any internet service and to check my settings. I opened up origin and it works fine! another related note, My Nvidia Gforce Experience App that keeps tabs on latest updates for my Video card, tells me there is a new update. But when I press the green download button, it also tells me I have no internet connection... I searched under my allowed programs & apps in my firewall settings and its squeaky clean... I then did a system restore and used a restore point from 2 days ago when I know for a fact everything was running great, I still get same results.
I have two desktops hard wired to a router with windows 8 installed out of the box. Created a workgroup on desktop A called RMWGroup, rebooted and joined Desktop B to the same workgroup. I created a folder called C:data on desktop A and shared it out. I created the same local user account from Desktop B onto Desktop A and gave them read access to the folder. When i reboot desktop A i can see it momentarily from Desktop B and can see the files in the folder but after a few minutes (1 or 2) access is then gone and i can no longer ping Desktop A from Desktop B. If i reboot i can see it and ping it again for a few minutes then access is gone again. Why is that?
The original p[lan was to allow the user from Desktop B to see one folder on Desktop A but not login to Desktop A locally.
I have had to reinstall my laptop and now i'm having some trouble finding the tweak to remove the "insert a smartcard" option from my logon box when i try to connect to an external computer with the remote desktop client.
I have a Asus Laptop operating with Windows 8.1. It connects to wifi but none of the desktop icons can get to the Internet. Meanwhile most window tiles in the start menu have Internet access . For example I have the application "MegaTube" and that application has access to the Internet. As well as the weather app, which updates when connected to the Internet.
I've tried just about everything, but can't seem to find a setting to stop this action. The screen on my laptop (Sony Flip 15A, intel4400/geforce735) seems to increase and decrease in brightness between screens. It's rather annoying not just because of the change, but also because it takes several seconds to occur and it occurs in discrete steps. I'm running the latest drivers from both intel and nvidia. I've tried turning off adaptive brightness and disabling the sensor service, and all effects (fade in, UAC, etc) have been turned off. A video of the condition is shown below:
(Vimeo was taking forever to process)
It even happen when no programs are opening/closing - for example, if I view a dark background web page and then a lighter background, the brightness shifts. I can't imagine how awful this will be in photoshop.
My internet provider is BT and they have a couple of public wifi signals that I use when I can't get onto my Home Router, I can use their public wifi on my old Acer windows 7 laptop but I'm having a lot of problems with using it on my new Windows 8.1 Dell Laptop, I can connect to their public wifi and it loads the login page fast but then I can't load any other page. Sometimes it works for a bit but then stops out of nowhere or it will only load some of the page and then just stops loading it. Sometimes it disconnects me and other times it won't let me connect to the network at all. I can use it on my little sister's laptop which runs windows 7 and it's a lot faster than on my new laptop and I never had these problems on my old laptop.
I have a Dell Inspiron 7000 laptop which has an Intel Dual Band Wireless-N 7260 adapter built in but I can't use their public Wifi with it so I use an external wireless adapter dongle since I can get faster speeds when connected to my Home Router and it picks three different BT wifi signals but I'm having this issue with all three of them.
I recently encountered a problem where my browsers (IE and Firefox) and email stopped working. I know I have an internet connection - I can ping Google for example. And I have other laptops that are working fine. The weird thing is when I reboot I can sometimes use the browser or email but after a couple of minutes it stops again (stuck in waiting for google.com). This has been going on for a week now. I tried restoring from earlier but still doesn't work. I've tried resetting DNS and WINSOCK and TCP - makes no difference. I'm running Norton and Malwarebytes.
This is the other random problem i am having all the normal things did not work sfc scan, malwarebytes etc etc no viruses etc clean pc....reinstall unistall drivers blah blah blah....Apparently its not grabbing a proxy from the network it seems
On windows 8 internet explorer used to open up as an app on the windows start screen. Today, I decided to download firefox to improve speed. However, I found that firefox only opened in 'desktop' and I couldn't work out how to open it as an app, like I did with internet explorer. I uninstalled firefox and repinned explorer to start screen and toolbar and reset it as default only to find it too wouldn't open on start screen now, coming up with the message shown by the image. . I know it's not a problem with the internet because if I wrench it onto the desktop it works perfectly. Why won't the internet work on the startscreen? How can I fix it?
When I am in my start screen and I touch my desktop tile to get into my desktop I don't get into it. I either get into IE or into the last website I have been in and not closed. Can I sort this out?
I am having trouble with ICS on win 8. On my old laptop (win xp) I used to be able to share my 3Connect dongle internet to connect to Xbox live. I recently got a new laptop with win 8 and whenever I share this internet connection I can never connect on my Xbox (the network to internet part fails). When everything is connected up and shared the Ethernet says 'Unidentified Network' which i believe is the cause of the problem. I've read i may require a driver update but i cannot seem to find one.
My Laptop: Toshiba Satellite C855-29N
what to do, maybe i am not setting up the connection sharing properly?
I'm a Windows 8. I'm trying to RDP from my new Windows 8 laptop to an XP desktop, both of which are on my home network. When I try, I get the below error...
Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:
1) Remote access to the server is not enabled 2) The remote computer is turned off 3) The remote computer is not available on the network
As best as I can tell, none of the conditions above is true. Here is what I have looked at so far...
- On the XP machine, in System settings / Remote, "Allow users to connect to this system" is Checked. I have successfully RDP'd to this machine in the past, but this is the first time I've tried from the Windows 8 machine.
- From the Windows 8 machine, I can ping the XP machine, and I can access a shared drive on the XP machine. In fact, I've been moving files between the XP machine and the Windows 8 machine, in both directions, all day.
- Just to eliminate another potential issue, I have set the username and password on the Windows 8 machine to match that on the XP machine.
Incidentally, XP machine is running XP Pro, 2002, SP3.
Is there a way to make the desktop button/tile/link to the desktop on the start screen to be a different image besides what is really on your desktop screen?
For example, lets say I want a photo of deep space on my tile desktop button, but don't want that image as my desktop screen. Just the tile.
I deleted the default desktop tile (the one that shows your desktop wallpaper) from the start screen. I've tried Recuva to see if I could still recover the file, and searched the internet and the installation disk. Unfortunately, the file it is nowhere to be found... Is there's another way to retrieve it?
After start-up and when I click on the desktop tile, my windows 8.1 HP Envy laptop flickers between the Start up screen with all the tiles to the desktop then to a blue screen then back to the Start up Screen with all the tile and so on.
Can't seem to get off that merry go-round. HP Tech support has me hitting the F11 key to get me to recovery manager so I can back up my files.
I have just bought a new laptop with windows 8 and actually quite like the tile setup! Some programs I need to use are on the desktop and I regularly need to switch between desktop and start screen views. All I want to do is have an on screen 'windows button' that will take me from the desktop back to the start screen with a click of the mouse, as opposed to having to physically push the keyboard button.
I know this is ultimately lazy, but surely it should be simple and sometimes a mouse click is just so much easier than pushing the button!
This is rather ironic. Most people complain about booting to the new Start page and want to boot the the Desktop. I would rather boot the new Start page but my new Asus Windows 8 computer boots to the start page initially but after about three seconds automatically goes to the desktop.
