Network / Sharing :: Windows 8 Workgroup Works For A Few Seconds?
Mar 3, 2013
I have two desktops hard wired to a router with windows 8 installed out of the box. Created a workgroup on desktop A called RMWGroup, rebooted and joined Desktop B to the same workgroup. I created a folder called C:data on desktop A and shared it out. I created the same local user account from Desktop B onto Desktop A and gave them read access to the folder. When i reboot desktop A i can see it momentarily from Desktop B and can see the files in the folder but after a few minutes (1 or 2) access is then gone and i can no longer ping Desktop A from Desktop B. If i reboot i can see it and ping it again for a few minutes then access is gone again. Why is that?
The original p[lan was to allow the user from Desktop B to see one folder on Desktop A but not login to Desktop A locally.

I've been searching the web looking for any resources that can tell me what protocols are required to set up a Windows workgroup between two Windows 8 machines. Is there any difference for two Windows 7 machines? It seems like TCP/IP is a good place to start but which supporting protocols are required if any?

I just purchased a Lenovo laptop / Win 8.
I changed the Workgroup name to match my existing XP workgroup. Win 8 found the new workgroup, connected to it and changed the workgroup name. However, I cannot access the shared discs or printers.

When I tried to add the printer the dialogue shows the printer I want to connect to. Then says that I need to download the HP drivers to my computer. When I say yes a message comes up that says I can't connect to the printer with an error code of 0x000003e3.

I am trying to set up a workgroup, not a homegroup, and all of the target computers are setup in the default group "WORKGROUP." I'm using a workgroup to allow cross platform sharing. Anyways, when I right click on a folder then Share With > Specific People > Add the workgroup is not listed.

This issue has been persisting ever since I bought this laptop. Every 60 seconds (exactly 60 seconds), my wireless internet will spike dramatically to the point of making me extremely angry like this. In any game I play where I average a 30-60 ping, the ping would spike anywhere from 300-1000ms and last for about 4 seconds.
It happens every single day since I got this laptop, and I have tried a few solutions and none of them have worked.
I've tried disabling TCP/IPv6I have disabled all firewalls. I have no anti virus/malware software on any kind. I disabled homegroups. I have a static IP (and ports opened for certain games)I have tried using Vista Anti Lag
None of these have worked in the slightest way. I do not believe it is my router causing the issue, because any of the other 3 computers, phones, and my Xbox 360 do not have this issue. Two of the other computers run windows XP, while the other one runs Windows 8. Also, I can not directly connect my laptop to the router because of living arrangements and how everything is set up.
I'm starting to think it's an issue with all the useless Samsung crap installed on this laptop. It's a 750gb hard drive, and only 677gb's were free to use. I'm pretty sure Windows 8 doesn't take up that much space...

My friend lives in an area where the only possible internet connection is through a CDMA USB device. They have multiple computers all connected through a host computer sharing this CDMA connection.
Recently they had a major problem with the Windows XP machine that was acting as host. So they bought a new desktop computer (HP PRE with Intel Core i7). I got them a copy of Windows 8 Pro and installed it on the host. Everything was going great until it was time to share the internet connection! I clicked on the CDMA device and clicked to share the connection using the ethernet connector as the shared device. The Ethernet cable goes to wireless router plugged into 1 of 4 switch connectors. All WAN features are turned off on router. I set the router's local IP to an address in same subnet as shared connection on host machine (192.168.137.1).
Then I connected a 2nd computer to the wireless router. This computer connects great! It gets an valid IP address from host. I can connect from 2nd computer to host to browse files on host, no problem. However, the 2nd computer can not connect to the internet.
When it first connects, the 2nd computer shows internet access, but after 30 seconds or so, internet access is disabled.

My web browsers only seem to work when Im downloading something with utorrent. If I stop utorrent from downloading, my browser(chrome) no longer loads a website or loads extremely slow. When Im downloading something on utorrent everything is fine, internet works great. I had to limit the download rate so it doesnt use all my speed though. Its kind of like my internet has to charge up by download on utorrent, then feeds my web browser speed and/or connectivity.
The problem seem to have started when I was using connectify to create a hotspot for my neighbor to use for internet off of me without him connecting directly to my wifi. I have uninstalled connectify, did a dns flush, and did a netsh int ip reset.

I'm loving Windows 8 Consumer Preview so far. However, my internet connection (Cable/LAN/Hikari Fiber) is disconnecting after 5 or so seconds. I'm using a Marvell Yukon 88E8056 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (on an Asus P6T Deluxe V2 Motherboard).
The system is dual booting with Windows 7 and that connection is perfectly OK. To get it to work again (for 5 seconds) I have to disable and re-enable the controller, and sometimes it seems necessary to delete the connection and set up another one.
Fortunately my connection is fast so I was able to stubbornly update a few small files via Windows Update by reconnecting many times, with a few % progress each time! Non of those updates were related to the connection hardware or this issue though.
So far I've tried (numerous times):
1. (The above update procedure, in case of hardware updates.)
2. Disabling and enabling the controller, and setting up the connection again.
3. (Swapping the drivers with Windows 7's, and then back to the originals.)
4. Re-installing Windows 8
5. Searching Marvell's site for driver updates.
6. Searching Asus's site for updates.
7. (Connection Login and Password are correct)
Points of note:
a. Windows 7 (dual boot) is connecting fine.
b. This is a hobby, so basic stuff should have been covered.
c. The timezone, date and time are set correctly.
This motherboard is very popular, and I don't see similar issues online, other than maybe wireless ones. I wouldn't have expected things to be too different from Windows 7. I'm expecting it is a simple driver issue.

My web browser's works fine, all 3 in fact (Chrome,Firefox, Explorer) however, when I open my steam app (gaming program) it keeps telling me it is not establishing any internet service and to check my settings. I opened up origin and it works fine! another related note, My Nvidia Gforce Experience App that keeps tabs on latest updates for my Video card, tells me there is a new update. But when I press the green download button, it also tells me I have no internet connection... I searched under my allowed programs & apps in my firewall settings and its squeaky clean... I then did a system restore and used a restore point from 2 days ago when I know for a fact everything was running great, I still get same results.

Since I installed some "critical" updates from microsoft, there have been some network problems. The main problem that I noticed was that the ethernet appeared as "limited". Then, as I logged in, internet was actually working fine, but that was in desktop mode. Now, as I try to run an app from start screen, it said that there was no internet connection...
So I went to troubleshoot the problem but nothing was found. The other thing I noticed was that, by opening the "Network and Sharing center", there appeared something unusual:
I also booted up to safe mode with network to see if it still persisted, and it still continued limited and while opening the network and sharing center, it still showed that thing on the image.
All this happened just after installing and restarting for the new update, and so, I also tried to restore the system to the point before the update, but it was proven to be unsuccessful, in the end appearing a message saying that it must have not been successful because of the antivirus being enabled at the time (I doubt it), or because of an unknown error.

My internet provider is BT and they have a couple of public wifi signals that I use when I can't get onto my Home Router, I can use their public wifi on my old Acer windows 7 laptop but I'm having a lot of problems with using it on my new Windows 8.1 Dell Laptop, I can connect to their public wifi and it loads the login page fast but then I can't load any other page. Sometimes it works for a bit but then stops out of nowhere or it will only load some of the page and then just stops loading it. Sometimes it disconnects me and other times it won't let me connect to the network at all. I can use it on my little sister's laptop which runs windows 7 and it's a lot faster than on my new laptop and I never had these problems on my old laptop.
I have a Dell Inspiron 7000 laptop which has an Intel Dual Band Wireless-N 7260 adapter built in but I can't use their public Wifi with it so I use an external wireless adapter dongle since I can get faster speeds when connected to my Home Router and it picks three different BT wifi signals but I'm having this issue with all three of them.

So last week I bought a new laptop, an HP Envy m6 with Windows 8 already installed in. It was working fine, till I came home today to find that my wi-fi adapter is turned off, no big deal I just went to networks and enabled it.
Now, it says I have internet connection to my wi-fi router, all five bars but whenever I use browers such as Chrome or IE it will not load.
Now I have an old computer, a Lenovo B560 that works perfectally fine. Chrome, and IE.
The problem is not that I don't have connection or limited, its the fact that my browsers are not loading/acting as if I do not have a problem.
I've called Microsoft, I've been through fourms but I am so lost. I'm told that it's my router but how can it be when my Windiws 7 Home-Premiun is fine, but why Windows 8 is not?
If I restart my router then my wireless says it is limited on my Windows 8, if I restart my Windows 8 I will have browser's for five minutes (techianlly 4 minutes and 35-55 seconds) and then it will shut off.

I have a home network set up by geeksquad. They have set up a filesharing where the public drive is on my only PC with a Vista Operating sys. They have a WORKGROUP called WORKGROUP. I connect everything else wirelessly. Have 2 Windows 7 Home laptops connected. A shared printer is also connected.
I now have a new laptop with Windows 8 and just want to add it in. I named the Homegroup WORKGROUP and I can see the other computers when I click on network, but I can't access them. When I click on the other computers especially the Vista PC with the public drive, it asks for a network user ID and password. I tried everything I can think of and it keeps telling me password invalid.
So my new laptopwith Windows 8 has yet to be added to the filesharing and printer sharing.

Is there a way to setup network profiles or something so that when I bring my Surface Pro to work and connect to the wireless network there it will use the static ip address I have but when I disconnect and then connect to my home wifi it will go back to DHCP? On my MacBook Pro I can go into the network settings and change the location profile I have setup for networks but I don't see anything like this for Windows 8.

I am trying to share a specific folder on my Windows 8 computer with my Windows 7 computer. They are both on the same network connected to the same router. The Windows 8 computer is connected through ethernet, while the Windows 7 computer is connected wirelessly.
Here are my settings on my Windows 8 Computer:
This is the error I get on my Windows 7 computer:
What's up with this? On a related note, is it possible to share this folder with a specific PC, rather than "Everyone" on the network?

I am having trouble with ICS on win 8. On my old laptop (win xp) I used to be able to share my 3Connect dongle internet to connect to Xbox live. I recently got a new laptop with win 8 and whenever I share this internet connection I can never connect on my Xbox (the network to internet part fails). When everything is connected up and shared the Ethernet says 'Unidentified Network' which i believe is the cause of the problem. I've read i may require a driver update but i cannot seem to find one.
My Laptop: Toshiba Satellite C855-29N
what to do, maybe i am not setting up the connection sharing properly?

I've been trying to set up an old Savin 9033 printer through the company's router, but I couldn't find the network it's set up on from any other computer.
So I pull up Network & Sharing, see that Network Discovery is turned off.
I check it, go to click on "Save Changes" and nothing happens. I click it a few times and it kicks me back to the previous page, nothing saved. No password prompt or anything.
I double checked that all the appropriate services are running (DNS Client, SSDP Discovery, UPnP Device Host, Function Discoveryr Resource Publication, etc.) and made sure Network Discovery was allowed through Windows Firewall.

I built a custom pc recently and I decided to get Windows 8.1. I built the pc and installed Windows 8.1 no problem. Rebooted after install no problem. Updated my graphics card drivers (tried playing minecraft and it said I needed to) and rebooted, no problem. Then, the next day when I turned it on, it booted onto the start screen, before the login, I clicked to continue to login and it went black. Everything but the mouse. It would flash on and off every little while.
I could move the mouse off the screen to the right and bottom, but not the top and left. I rebooted, same thing. One more reboot, and the splash screen is different . It says "Please Wait" on top of the loading circle thing. It says Recovery. I click advanced settings and continue to windows 8.1. It reboots and works fine. Until next time I turn it off and back on.
These are my specs, if needed:
AMD FX-6300 6-Core 3.5 GHz
ASRock 980DE3/U3S3
2x4GB G-Skill Ares DDR-3 1600mhz
Gigabyte Geforce 650 Ti
Windows 8.1 64-bit (obviously)

I am able to open a document using task scheduler in my Windows XP machine, but not in my Windows 8.1 machine or my daughters Windows 8 machine. Is this a Windows 8 bug?
I am able to open the document by hand, but when I wait for the time that Task Scheduler has assigned to open the document, nothing happens. On the other hand when I do the same thing in my XP machine it opens correctly at the assigned time.
I have cleaned my computer completely and reloaded the original operating system then upgraded to Windows 8.1 but it didn't do anything to solve the problem.

I'm running Windows 8 Pro 64 bit on a Dell Precision 490 desktop. I upgraded from XP so it was basically a clean install.
I have my power button configured to put the system to sleep and it will do that ONCE after I turn it on. After that, pushing the power button does nothing until the next reboot or power cycle. Going to Charms -> Settings -> Power -> Sleep always works.
This obviously isn't a critical problem, but it's really annoying because I'm in the habit of hitting the power button and usually it just doesn't work.
Things I've tried:
- searching Google - can't find the needle in the haystack
- searching this forum - nothing that matches
- checking the Event Log - nothing interesting or suspicious
- apply all Microsoft updates - no change
- disable my Comodo Internet Security - no change
- change power options and then change them back - no change
- checked if I could stop and restart the power service - nope
