I am trying to set up a workgroup, not a homegroup, and all of the target computers are setup in the default group "WORKGROUP." I'm using a workgroup to allow cross platform sharing. Anyways, when I right click on a folder then Share With > Specific People > Add the workgroup is not listed.

When I share a folder to the homegroup and give it View/Edit permissions, it changes to View only after a computer restart.
Edit:One more thing, I think it might have something to do with the fact the folders are on a drive defined as a storage space in the storage pool.
I'm setting up for the first time a Homegroup (on Windows 8.1) between laptop and desktop. So far, Im impressed with the speed of transmission from one computer to the other. However, I noticed that I can only access the C: drive as well as the Library stuff such as Music, Pictures, Desktop, Downloads, etc folders. I would like to be able to access from my laptop the OTHER DRIVES on my desktop PC. What's the best way to do this?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have 2 windows 7 pc's with same login-name/password that I can password protected share fine folders between them. Fron Explorer I right-click a folder and share it to the other pc by entering in the login-name/password. I know this is how it is suppose to work and it does. Now I'm trying to share folders between a newer windows 8.1 pc, the windows 7 pc's and think I know why it does not work, but not how to fix it. This is because I do not know windows 8.1 very well.
The Windows 8.1 pc has a different login/user-name of "uuuuu ttttt", a different password pwp, a ms account of hhhh@hhhhh.com a computer name cccc and the same workgroup name as the 2 win 7 pc's. I put a "uuuuu ttttt" user account with the pwp password on a win 7 pc which has a computername pc-pc, a login-name hh and the same password pw. I also put a hh/pw user account on the win 8.1 pc.
No matter what I enter for for a computer/user name when I try to share a win 7 folder with the specific windows 8 user account it says it cannot find that user. I think I should type in the Add box "ccccuuuuu ttttt".
When I try to share a win 8.1 folder ff it goes to advanced sharing and I can share, but does not let me exactly specify the the win 7 user, but just a general share. The win 7 pc then shows the share under network, but right clicking it says I do not have permissions for ccccff"
I do not seem to understand sharing in either direction with a windows 8.1 pc.
I have Four PCs, one is my home Desktop (HOME-PC) and Others are THREE laptops with different names connected to one wifi netowkr. I often share folders from my HOME-PC so that other users can access them, but I can only share a folder with 'Everyone' but How do I share a folder in such a way, that only LAPTOP1 can access it?

I cannot get the xp laptop to connect, I changed the Name from mshome to workgroup, but it still does not work.
I've been searching the web looking for any resources that can tell me what protocols are required to set up a Windows workgroup between two Windows 8 machines. Is there any difference for two Windows 7 machines? It seems like TCP/IP is a good place to start but which supporting protocols are required if any?

I changed the Workgroup name to match my existing XP workgroup. Win 8 found the new workgroup, connected to it and changed the workgroup name. However, I cannot access the shared discs or printers.
When I tried to add the printer the dialogue shows the printer I want to connect to. Then says that I need to download the HP drivers to my computer. When I say yes a message comes up that says I can't connect to the printer with an error code of 0x000003e3.

Created a workgroup on desktop A called RMWGroup, rebooted and joined Desktop B to the same workgroup. I created a folder called C:data on desktop A and shared it out. I created the same local user account from Desktop B onto Desktop A and gave them read access to the folder. When i reboot desktop A i can see it momentarily from Desktop B and can see the files in the folder but after a few minutes (1 or 2) access is then gone and i can no longer ping Desktop A from Desktop B. If i reboot i can see it and ping it again for a few minutes then access is gone again. Why is that?
The original p[lan was to allow the user from Desktop B to see one folder on Desktop A but not login to Desktop A locally.

I can't join my homegroup, it randomly stopped working a week ago (ish) when i try to reconnect to the homgroup now it says "A homegroup can only be created on a private network...change settings blah bah..." Although I have everything setup correctly and i'm trying to join a homegroup not make one. I read,

well i created a homegroup for my 4 pc's, but with the last one i get the message that the Revo user changed the password.
A user wanting to join the homegroup cannot change the password......normally.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI just purchased a new laptop with windows 8.1. I previously had two laptops and a desktop all running windows 7 and all connected to my network wirelessly. I had a homegroup set up on the desktop that works fine for all windows 7 machines, but I cannot get the new 8.1 machine to connect to it. The new machine sees that the homegroup is there but after I put in the password it says it no longer can find the homegroup.
I tried to run the homegroup troubleshooter and got a vague response about network problems, but no problems were detected by the network troubleshooter. I've also tried creating a local user instead of logging in with a Microsoft account but got the same message when I tried to connect.
Have a Vista and Windows 8.1 computer on home network (Workgroup). I want to be able to have access to each others "Public Folder." When I try to open the other computer via network, I get a prompt asking for a password (credentials). Neither computer uses a password. Is there a way around this?

Previously I had them sharing perfectly until I did a reinstall of Windows 8 (upgraded to Windows 8.1). As you can see, there is simultaneous ~150Mbit/s upstream/downstream on my local ethernet adapter. WHY? As far as I am concerned there should be no meaningful traffic since it's actually a copy process on the local hard disk of my server.

The easiest one I have found was through a Private Network through Logmein's Hamachi, as you can browse other connected computers' files through this network.
Of course, to show the shared drives by the host computer, you need to input a username and password through the UAC. Obviously, if I insert my own username and password, I can see the folders I've shared. However, how do I configure a username/password for my client? Are these users the same as local users? I would like to avoid having to make a local user for him on my own computer.
Just for reference, I have no control over my network I am connected to, so no FTP, no port forwarding etc.

I'm unable to create a home group. when i try to do so, i'm getting an error message saying "Windows just detected an existing homegroup. To join it, click ok, and then open homegroup in control panel."

On the other (which also says "private network"), I am unable to join the homegroup. Whenever I connect to the network, it searches and says "There is no homegroup on this network" and displays "Create Homegroup" in the Network and Sharing Center. View 5 Replies View RelatedI just bought a new Intel NUC which i installed a clean and fully updated Windows 8.1 Pro on. I want to create a networkshare on this machine, which everyone can just access (read permissions) to view the content of a folder or drive.
I am trying to access the drive on another (my own) installed Windows 8.1 Pro (also fully updated). Every time i try to access the machine through the Network explorer in Windows i will be prompted to enter credentials.
I have checked the network settings following this article (amongst others): Network Location - Set to Private or Public in Windows 8 on both machines.
I also checked all the sharing settings on both machines (private/home network, allow external connections, allow all types of connections, allow sharing without password etc. etc.).
I am a bit dazzled as to why the machine keeps asking me to enter credentials. This is standard protocol nowadays? (I wonder how that would work on a machine that has a local user without a password).
I have two computers on a large desk side by side. Both are running Windows 8.1
I have a drive on computer A which I want to be able to access on computer B.
I have gone into advanced sharing for the drive and enabled sharing. However, when I go to map the drive on computer B, I get an error that I don't have permission to access that drive.
What am i missing here? Neither computers are using logins/passwords for the admin user account.
For a couple weeks I have been streaming shows to my ps3 from my computer. On my PS3 I have access to four folders, Videos, Music, Pictures, and Playlists, the first three of which I can locate on my computer. When I want to watch a video, I simply copy it into the Videos folder on my computer, then stream from there.
Now I'd like to stream music, my problem is that my music isn't in my Music folder, I have it in a separate folder that doesn't show up on my PS3. Copying over all my music would take time, and I'd also have to redo my WMP playlists. I have tried adding this folder to my shared folder list, and to my Music library, but neither of these things made a difference.
I've spent a couple hours now trying to figure this out, but I can't seem to find anything on google that relates to my specific problem, but there is absolutely no way I'm the first person who's ever wanted to access folder's other than the 4 I've mentioned.
I took a 10:42 minute video with my camera. It's 1.28 GB and the file type MTS. The issue is I need to email it and it's too big of a file to send whole. I'm not in favor of chopping it up, but will if this is the best idea. I want to keep the video private between a few people. I am aware most place such as youtube, vimeo(not enough space) and dropbox all have privacy settings. Though waiting eight hours for an upload is a bit lengthy.

In File explorer both machines can see the other in the homegroup but when I double click I get a message (on either machine) "This PC is currently unavailable". This has only been a problem since using 8. When I was all windows 7 the homegroup worked perfectly. Both machines have been set up to share everything including the kitchen sink. I must have a setting wrong somewhere. This used to be an intermittent thing. When I had my old desktop (also windows 8) other homegroup machines could occasionally see the desktop but sometimes not!! I have a BT router that on an individual basis works fine. All machines are using the wi fi on the router.

In Network and Sharing Center it sees the HomeGroup and says "Available to Join". I try to join by inputting the password and after a minute it says "Windows no longer detects a homegroup on this network...."
Why is this happening? What to do? What is the point of having multiple computers if you can't join them.
I also see that I can't even access the other computer through network. It shows both computers yet when I click on one it says its not accessible, I don't have permissions, etc. I have done nothing to change anything. Why can't I see other computers on my own network? On my two Win 7 computers it was as simple as could be. Why is this Win 8.1 giving me trouble?
