Network / Sharing :: How To Access Existing XP Workgroup

Apr 28, 2013

I just purchased a Lenovo laptop / Win 8.

I changed the Workgroup name to match my existing XP workgroup. Win 8 found the new workgroup, connected to it and changed the workgroup name. However, I cannot access the shared discs or printers.

Adding New Windows 8 To Existing Workgroup?

Dec 8, 2012

I have a home network set up by geeksquad. They have set up a filesharing where the public drive is on my only PC with a Vista Operating sys. They have a WORKGROUP called WORKGROUP. I connect everything else wirelessly. Have 2 Windows 7 Home laptops connected. A shared printer is also connected.

I now have a new laptop with Windows 8 and just want to add it in. I named the Homegroup WORKGROUP and I can see the other computers when I click on network, but I can't access them. When I click on the other computers especially the Vista PC with the public drive, it asks for a network user ID and password. I tried everything I can think of and it keeps telling me password invalid.

So my new laptopwith Windows 8 has yet to be added to the filesharing and printer sharing.

Network / Sharing :: Network Protocols Required To Set Up Workgroup?

Network / Sharing :: Windows 8 Workgroup Works For A Few Seconds?

Mar 3, 2013

I have two desktops hard wired to a router with windows 8 installed out of the box. Created a workgroup on desktop A called RMWGroup, rebooted and joined Desktop B to the same workgroup. I created a folder called C:data on desktop A and shared it out. I created the same local user account from Desktop B onto Desktop A and gave them read access to the folder. When i reboot desktop A i can see it momentarily from Desktop B and can see the files in the folder but after a few minutes (1 or 2) access is then gone and i can no longer ping Desktop A from Desktop B. If i reboot i can see it and ping it again for a few minutes then access is gone again. Why is that?

The original p[lan was to allow the user from Desktop B to see one folder on Desktop A but not login to Desktop A locally.

Network / Sharing :: Adding Windows 8 Computer To Existing System

Mar 26, 2013

I've had a home network with a Windosw7 PC, sometimes a windows 7 laptop, an Imac, and 2 Mac Powerbooks. I never did anything special to set up a network, I just connected them all to the router. I also have a network printer, a Cannon, which they all print to.

I added a new Windows 8 computer and during the set up process added the printer connection. After doing that, none of the other computers could print to the printer, they all got a "printer offline message. So I deleted it from the Windows 8 profile and it worked for the others again.

Is there a way to set up the printer for the windows 8 computer without cutting off the others?

Also, I'd like to homeshare the two windows 7 and the windows 8 computers, is there a way to do that and have networking still with the MAC computers - I'm particularly concerned with the printer. We don't really need to share files between the macs and pcs.

Network / Sharing :: Windows 8.1 Upgrade Refused To Recognize Existing And Working WiFi Upon Reboot

Feb 13, 2014

I seem to be going round in circles trying to reconnect a working Windows 8 laptop to the WiFi after upgrading to 8.1

It refused to recognise the existing and working WiFi upon reboot after upgrade.

I have twice ran the 'netsh wlan delete profile name=[profile name]' command to remove the profile, rebooted the machine, re-added the profile, nothing happens.

The network symbol in the system tray when clicked doesn't show the profile I created, so I can't select it to connect to (though I set it to auto connect?), it just shows 'Hidden Network' , but when clicking this and I enter the SSID and WPA2 key, it just errors with a failed to connect message.

This was working fine, that's how I downloaded the update, now it's broken!

Network / Sharing :: How To Disable Password Access To File And Printer Sharing

Feb 6, 2013

I am in the midst of the final steps in setting my my new Win 8 system.

I have a Win XP and Win 8 computer on my home network. I believe that I have set up file and printer sharing correctly. I can access the files and printer on the XP system from the Win 8 system. However, when I attempt to access the Win 8 files from the Win XP system, I get a long delay (about a minute or two) and then it asks me for the User Name & Password. I enter them and then and it works fine.

If I try to print on the printer attached to the Win 8 system from the XP system, I get a printer error unless I have already signed in with the ID & PW when accessing files. It never asks me for an ID & PW before attempting to print.

On the Win 8 system, I have selected "Turn off password protected sharing" in the "Network and Sharing Center/Advanced Sharing Settings".

The Win XP system has previously been correctly sharing files and printers with another XP system for some time and I haven't changed any settings on the XP computer.

Both the XP and Win 8 systems are assigned the same Workgroup name.

Network / Sharing :: Windows 8.1 Breaks Network With Two WiFi Access Points

May 10, 2014

I have two wifi APs in the home and only one has an Internet connection. the other is to access the wired LAN.

Last week I updated from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 and thought everything was going well until I started getting wired LAN dropouts.

I have traced it back to 8.1 handling connection to wifi APs. In Windows 8, I was able to have "Connect automatically" for BOTH wifi adapters on this laptop. Now when I try to connect to the non-Internet AP, Windows 8.1 announces (correctly) "Limited access" and that's what Windows 8 did too. BUT, Windows 8.1 waits a few seconds then drops the connection with a useless message, "how me solve connection problems," where there is NO problem. A limited connection for the AP to the wired LAN is OK as it was in 8.

So now I am stuck with no home LAN access unless I drop the Internet AP and connect to the LAN AP.

Also, in the great wisdom of 8.1, because it is only a "limited" connection, it does not remember the Passphrase so I have to type it in every time. So much for progress.

What to do to get past this behavior and have a "limited" connection as OK as it is with Windows 8?

Network / Sharing :: Unexpected Error When Trying To Access Network Adapter

May 3, 2013

As the title says, I'm getting a box saying "An unexpected error has occurred" whenever I try and access the properties window for my ethernet adapter. An unexpected power outage earlier in the day rendered my Windows 8 installation half messed up, leaving most of my drivers corrupt, so I had to attempt a refresh today, which solved most of my problems.

Unfortunately others like this have been cropping up since the refresh. I've looked for other possible solutions to this problem, and none have worked so far. Re-registering DLL files solved nothing, a system file check didn't do anything, and making sure I was in the correct user groups didn't solve anything either.

Network / Sharing :: Surface RT Cannot Access Network Folders - Can't Authenticate

Apr 20, 2014

So I've some folders in my Desktop that I want to share with all the hosts in my network, so what i did was to create a new users and set all those folders only to read mode and, everytime I wanted to access the folders on those machines I simply access those folders via that user (in Windows hosts I just enter the network path like ip_addressfolder , windows then asks for the network password, I authenticate with that user and I have access to those folders.

The thing is that in my Surface RT (Windows RT -ARM), every time I try to access those folders via the method above (ip_addressfolder), I do see the folders, but when I double click on one of them in order to have access, instead of letting me authenticate, it simply returns the following error: Windows Cannot Access ip_addressfolder

Why is this so? Why doesn't Windows allow me to authenticate? Is this a limitation of the RT platform?

Network / Sharing :: No Internet Access Through Hosted Network In 8.1

The wifi hotspot got created as 'Local area network connection *14. The internet from the USB modem was shared to Local area network connection *14. Other devices are able to connect to this and are getting IP address in the range of 192.168.137.X. The issue is that, the devices are not able to access internet. in troubleshooting this issue.

Don't give the instructions to create a hostednetwork or advice to use 'Virtual router plus'. I have already done all sorts of basic troubleshooting. Everything looks fine, but there is no internet connection to other devices.

I am able to share internet using the same USB modem with same method in Windows 7.

Network / Sharing :: Access To Shared Resources On Network

Feb 7, 2014

I have two pcs: an old desktop pc with windows xp and a notebook with windows 8.

Both computers are connected to the Internet through an adsl router and are also connected togheter, sharing files and folders through plain networking: HomeGroup would not work with windows xp.

Therefore, both computers are under the same workgroup, have different IP addresses and both share printers and folders.

I am able to log into my notebook [running windows 8] from my desktop pc [running windows xp] but not vice versa.

When my windows 8 machine prompts me for user name and password to log into my windows xp machine, my user name and password are not recognised.

I tried setting up the same user name with the same password on both machines, but whilst now I am able from my Windows XP machine to log directly into my Windows 8 machine, without entering user name and password, I am still receiving the 'The user name or password is incorrect' message from my windows 8 machine.

In both machine I installed Comodo Internet Security. I set up Comodo Firewall in my Windows XP machine to receive Remote Desktop connections.

Now I am able to connect to my XP machine from my Windows 8 machine via Remote Desktop. I am still unable to log into it from the Network folder, though.

Network / Sharing :: Unidentified Network With No Internet Access

Sep 15, 2014

I got this problem on my laptop Asus u38dt under Windows 8.1 a couple of months ago. It cannot connect to any network either via Wi-Fi or Ethernet (I tried an external USB Wi-Fi adapter as well, with the same result). In case of getting IP with DHCP, the network is shown as Unidentified network with no address assiged (IP is like 169.*). When static IP enabled, the network name is correct. But in both cases, connection is Limited and with No Internet access.

Connection can't be established with any router while other devices connect properly with them, so the problem is on the laptop side.

With all of this, any ping, even to 127.0.0.1, results in General failure.

When booted in Linux liveUSB, network works fine, so it is clearly not a hardware issue.

I tried resetting TCP/IP stack with "netsh int ip reset", reinstalling drivers, reinstalling the network adapter, and lots of other methods and still it doesn't work. Restoring system is not an option since I don't have any restoration point prior to the problem anymore.

Network / Sharing :: Can't Access Shared Drives On Win 8 Pro PC

Sep 1, 2013

Have two Windows 8 machines and one has a bunch of drives connected to it, that I use informally as a file server. Generally, what happens is the following:

1) Boot the Windows 8 "server" machine (Windows 8 pro, not a Server OS)

2) Boot my Windows 8 Pro desktop

3) Open file manager app, double-click the icon for the server PC -- and drive icons open

But sometimes, when I do 3), I get an error message saying that the machine name is incorrect (which it is NOT).

When I click Details on this to see what is wrong, it says "no issues" -- but still can't connect.

This is generally resolved by rebooting the "server" box (and trying again), or rebooting the desktop box (and trying again), or going through repeated reboots of each -- until a connection is finally made.

I've checked the sharing permissions on the "server" box and they are set as follows:

1) Each partition -- read by everyone (used by the desktops to download files)

2) Shared folder in each partition -- full control by everyone (used by the desktops to upload files)

And ... password-protected sharing is enabled, such that when a desktop first tries to connect, you must enter valid account info. After that, the info is saved and you don't have to enter it again.

I've gone through removing sharing and reapplying it several times, and there are no changes as a result. And it's always all-or-nothing, that is, it's never a situation where some of the shares can be seen/used but not others.

Problem is, there are times when I really need access to the "server" drives from the desktop and can't reboot either because something is going on that takes a long time and I don't want to have to restart it. I also run XP on this box (which never gave me these problems) -- and would really like NOT to go back to using XP.

Network / Sharing :: QoS Ignored By Access Point Router

Aug 8, 2014

I am sharing my internet connection with my roommates, but lately they have been using P2P to download stuff which uses almost all the internet speed available. I have set up QoS to limit their bandwidth in the main Asus wifi router which directly connects to the modem, it works great for a few days, but then it doesn't work anymore, I still get slow internet speed now. Since my flat has 2 wifi routers, one is the main and another one is set up with a different name but still connects to the main router via the ethernet cable a few metres away so that the wireless range is increased. Just for your information, the two routers are transmitting on different channel, if you think that might be the cause and they have different SSID.

Could it be possible that the QoS only works in the main wifi router and doesn't affect the other wifi router which my roommates also have access to it?

I have changed the default router password so I am sure that they have no access to the router's settings.

I am using an old airlink 101 wireless router that has been trouble free for several years. I tried to log onto airlink for a support inquiry but they no longer provide support for this model.
