Recently I installed latest Windows 8.1 update (Update 1/Spring update), and later latest Beta Nvidia driver. After that, an strange problem showed up. I recorded a video which represents it (look at the thumbnail 'hiding' under the previewed application ).
I'm using UxStyle and this theme: Windows 8.1 White Titlebar Dark theme by x0lis on deviantART . I tried:
Uninstalling UxStyle and themeInstalling 'normal' Nvidia driverDoing sfc /scannow but it didn't find anything particular (something about prncacla.inf, but I don't think that this causes this problem)Scanning system with antivirus (KIS 2014)Turning off and on option 'Enable preview' in Advanced setting -> PerformanceChanging theme to otherSearching about this in Google and this forum, but I didn't find anything similar but nothing worked.
Well I didn't tried uninstalling Update 1, but I would like to avoid that.
When I don't use my taskbar (When I'm using a program or AFK), stuff appears in my taskbar. First it's usually a folder (like a folder would appear in Windows Explorer, sometimes a bunch open up (stacked). Then application icons open (not actual applications, but what I associate with blank applications. When I click on anything on the taskbar, they disappear. When I woke up this morning, there were so many my computer was getting slow, and I spent over $1,000 on this 11 months ago. They appear over time (i.e. one after another, not all at once), so they build up after a while. Occasionally one will stack as if a second instance of it is occurring. In the picture, the stack of application picture has them all flat. It does that to them after you hover over them (and switch between them) for a while.
when hovering over a miniature in the taskbar, normally, and waiting for an instance, a full screen preview is displayed of the selected miniature. However, since a day or two, this is not the case anymore.
I have accidently set my .ext default program to Notepad and I want to change it back to an unknown application I have tried deleting it in regedit and it just sets it back to notepad even when I restart my computer afterwards
I went from XP to Windows 8 Pro. With XP, a pictures folder allowed the icons to represent a small version of the picture; the filmstrip option was a nice bonus.
With Windows 8, the icon, no matter what size, has a generic look to it--same for all the pictures. I enable Preview Pane, and the same thing happens. No preview of the picture on the preview pane, just a much larger generic icon.
I see screen views on the web of it actually working, but I can't get it to.
I'm trying to get rid of the small preview windows that apear above the taskbar in Win 8. I edited the registry at HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvanced and added both a DisablePreviewWindow and DisablePreviewDesktop value and set them to 0x01. Still, the windows appear. UAC is entirely disabled.
Since the official leaked thread is full of people, and i don't wanna spam post all the same,i make a thread specific so all people like me can read, i hope to don't make you mad !
it's possible to update windows previes with the leaked one?! If yes, will i lose all or just apps or what?
While shutting downing my PC, a dialogue box with title "Windows application error" is displayed and gets automatically terminated. Error code number varies each time. This problem is started after i upgraded to 8.1. How can it be retrieved ?
I was wondering if there is a way to entirely remove windows 8.1 and keep all application and files and then reinstall windows 8.1 pro freshly? If its done should i use MTK or kmspico to activate it?
I keep getting this error in the Event Viewer on my Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 14 everytime I start.... I found them both in the regedit but when I right click on properties to grant the permissions to Full or All i get another windows error msg saying the permissions cannot be changed. So Im stuck with keep getting the error.
Here is the msg from Event Viewer:

When I try to open up my pictures folder, I can not see any previews of photos and I have to go through an entire folder using the Microsoft Picture viewer to view each and every picture then memorize the photo number in order to attach it to any e-mail or to insert it into my Outlook 2007. Is there an incompatibility issue here ? 2007 vs Windows 8.1 ?? What can I do to rectify the situation ?
Never got the chance yet to download windows 8.1 preview but I'm interested to know if it introduced any thing new to the font smoothing technology which is bad looking and not as sharp when compared to e.g. to OS X. I tested the original windows 8 in a virtual machine and I didn't endure how fonts look on it overall whether I'm using the OS itself or using applications like Office 2013.
I'm thinking of switching to Windows 8 from OS X on my 2009 MacBook Pro. Its the small things in OS X that brought me to Mac in the first place but now it is getting old. Windows 8 looks fresh so I'm thinking of switching to it. One of these small things thats really useful in OS X is quicklook.
When you are in Finder (like Windows Explorer) if you press the space bar any file that you have highlighted gets previewed. This is much quicker than opening whatever app handles that file and it also gives you some basic useful information about the file like size, type, etc.
If I would just like to see what an mp3 is quickly but dont want to import it into iTunes I can just press the space bar and be done with it in seconds instead of opening iTunes, importing it, creating clutter (if I dont want the file in iTunes at all). Likewise instead of opening a photo app I can just quickly look and browse through pictures.
Does Windows 8 have a similar feature that works fast and is useful?
I just installed a clean install of Windows 8.1 Preview Pro on my laptop (HP DV9000) and I've been coming back and forth to the forum and getting my questions answered by reading all the post about my problems and it worked. I've come across one problem that's frustration to say the least and it's really annoying.
Now that when I reboot my laptop it boots just fine and now the blank black screen comes on with just the cursor present. I've waited and even rebooted a few times and it's still the same.
when I start an application (such as word, excel, task manager, etc.) from start menu, windows goes to the classic desktop and runs the application itself. Once I have finished using it and close, it returns to the classic desktop, not to start menu.
I am running the latest edition of Windows 8.1 and have recently run into some problems. I have the Steam Gaming client installed on my system with a few games, one of which is Team Fortress 2. However, after I close certain games, that might run in fullscreen, and some don't like Minecraft, I can't open any other programs. Not task manager, I can't even shut down my PC. It's not just Steam items.
I have a Windows 8 Kiosk running and would like to have a video playing on it all the time. However, I want someone to be able to tap the screen to play it. The video ends and has to be tapped to be played again. And the screen is locked on this video only, so a client couldn't access any other part of the computer.
Is that something that I should be looking into some sort of media playing OS or is there any application that could do this task?
Windows 8.1 doesn't seem to like my 40GB IDE HDD, it won't seem to install no matter what. Upon selecting & formatting the partitions the setup just keep throwing 0x80070057 "Windows could not format a partition on disk 0" even if I reformat the HDD as per MS support article.
I rebooted into Windows 7 on my primary HDD and reformatted the 40GB HDD and attempted to install Windows 8.1, this time it gave me "Windows deployment engine could not initialize".
I tried something else, installed Windows 7 flawlessly on the 40GB HDD then proceeded to upgrade to Windows 8.1 via setup.exe. Everything went fine until the first reboot when it got stuck and hangs at exactly 77% with the fish and spinning orb. After around 30mins it reboots then asks me to 'Select Keyboard Layout" then requests which OS to select. From there I only have 'Windows Setup' and 'Windows 7'. Whenever I selecting 'Windows Setup' it ends up in black screen with the mouse cursor followed by a loop where it continuously asks me for Keyboard layout.
My Windows 8.1 x64 iso is not damaged (hashes are correct) nor is the 16GB boot USB disk that I used. What could possibly be wrong here? The HDD is a 11 year old Maxtor D540X-4D 5400RPM but it's fully functional (no errors in Windows 7 and correctly detected in my BIOS).
Fully wiping the HDD using GParted doesn't work either.
I have installed the ioWin8 Dev Preview on a HP Mini 210-1000 (twice) and it appears to install without issue but from the Metro UI almost all of the applications cannot be launched. Windows Explorer and Control Panel are the only ones that will launch, though the others do react visibly to being clicked on and they can be manually rearranged using the mouse and dragging.
Is there a Service that needs to be started or a configuration setting I am missing??
I installed windows 8.1 pro preview successfully in English, and since I use French very often, I installed and changed the display language into French. I also checked two options concerning the welcome screen and account users to display them all in French and worked perfectly.
I noticed the watermark before changing the display language into French, then followed this method to remove it : How to Remove Windows 8.1 Preview Watermark | MyTechBlog the method worked fine, but when I changed into French the watermark turned out again, then repeated the same method until I removed it.
when I finished I noticed that "My Computer" which appears as "This PC" + "Control Panel" + when I open Control Panel everything appear in English. but my display language now is French except the aforesaid.

Now my questions:
1. Is it normal, when I just boot Windows, right after iccons apear, when I click to open some application, for example internet browser (using chrome) it takes long time? Like 6 seconds? But if I after windows boot wait 10 sec, then its working normally?
2. When I was playing some new games, actually BF4 and I minimized game, the Windows was responding horibly? Opening "My Computer" takes like 8 secs, opening browser takes even more..
