View 1 RepliesI have an odd installation issue. I installed an old app that I had when I was using windows xp. Its called Weatherbug Alert. Upon installation, it asks if you want a quick launch icon on the taskbar, and I said yes. It installed, but over by the little icons on the far right. I won't let me move it to were the large icons are on the left, by the start icon. And it won't let me resize it.
Dell Inspiron 3647, 3.0GHz, 4 gig's ram, all windows updates.
Recently I installed latest Windows 8.1 update (Update 1/Spring update), and later latest Beta Nvidia driver. After that, an strange problem showed up. I recorded a video which represents it (look at the thumbnail 'hiding' under the previewed application ).
I'm using UxStyle and this theme: Windows 8.1 White Titlebar Dark theme by x0lis on deviantART . I tried:
Uninstalling UxStyle and themeInstalling 'normal' Nvidia driverDoing sfc /scannow but it didn't find anything particular (something about prncacla.inf, but I don't think that this causes this problem)Scanning system with antivirus (KIS 2014)Turning off and on option 'Enable preview' in Advanced setting -> PerformanceChanging theme to otherSearching about this in Google and this forum, but I didn't find anything similar but nothing worked.
Well I didn't tried uninstalling Update 1, but I would like to avoid that.
When I don't use my taskbar (When I'm using a program or AFK), stuff appears in my taskbar. First it's usually a folder (like a folder would appear in Windows Explorer, sometimes a bunch open up (stacked). Then application icons open (not actual applications, but what I associate with blank applications. When I click on anything on the taskbar, they disappear. When I woke up this morning, there were so many my computer was getting slow, and I spent over $1,000 on this 11 months ago. They appear over time (i.e. one after another, not all at once), so they build up after a while. Occasionally one will stack as if a second instance of it is occurring. In the picture, the stack of application picture has them all flat. It does that to them after you hover over them (and switch between them) for a while.

View 9 Replies View RelatedLast september i formatted my hdd and installed windows 8 ultimate, then updated to 8.1 ultimate, i don't exactly remember when but after some time it was installed desktop icons began to move by themselves. Last month i got an SSD and i decided to just reinstall windows 8.1 PRO from scratch. i did. After 1 or 2 days icons started moving by themselves again. i'm pretty sure there is a recurring way they do it, there must be an even that because of a bug triggers the movements, i haven't been able to determine it tough.
There isn't much more to say other than:
-"AutoArrange Icons" is disabled.
-I tried to download some .ini fixes for similar problem but they fails.
-I tried programs to manually restore icons position manually with a previous save. useless.
-i have no viruses and no strange programs installed.
-At the time i started having the problem i only had: StartIsBack 1.5.2, chrome and Visual Studio.
So I upgraded to windows 8.1 a few weeks ago from 7 and I'm loving the performance boosts I get while playing games, the one thing that bugs me and it happens randomly, sometimes once a day, sometimes never happens at all for a day or two, sometimes it happens every couple hours.
What happens is that my taskbar will completely empty and then reload everything and my desktop will do the same, desktop background goes blank icons disappear and then suddenly wallpaper comes back and all my icons keep shifting all over the place between my two monitors.
I've also noticed if I have my taskbar set to my main monitor (left) when it refreshes like that it forces the taskbar to move to my secondary monitor (right).
What could be causing this issue? I do use Start8, but so far searching bugs on that nothing seems to show anything similar to what I'm getting and since it's happening to my desktop and not just the taskbar I've figured it has to be something with windows.
My PC specs are as follows:
i7 4770k
Gigabyte R9 280x
16GB G-Skill DDR3 1600
Also, how to remove this from popping up in the bottom right corners of my desktop?
[URL] ......
Also, how do I disable the being able to drag the top of my desktop down and resizes my desktop, so many times moving my icons around after they get rearranged and I accidentally change my desktop size...
I am running windows 8 professional on my home PC and running windows 8 home on my Venue 8 Pro. I downloaded the remote desktop app on my Venue and setup a connection to my home PC. It was very easy and worked (at least on my home network) Now the first time I tried to access the computer outside my home it says that it can't find the PC. Is the connection only good with me being on the home network? Do I have to install some third party VPN to access it?
View 14 Replies View Relatedwhen I start an application (such as word, excel, task manager, etc.) from start menu, windows goes to the classic desktop and runs the application itself. Once I have finished using it and close, it returns to the classic desktop, not to start menu.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI found a way to get my list of programs on to the tool/task bar. From there I dragged one of the programs to the desktop thinking it would just create a shortcut. It didn't. It took the program off the dropdown list and put it on the desktop. I can't find a way to put it back in the drop down list of programs. I realize it's not earth shattering but it is definitely a huge annoyance to me since I want to have a 'shortcut' on both the programs drop down list and on the desktop.
View 4 Replies View RelatedPossible to open multiple instances of the desktop app or if there are any third party applications which could add such functionality. I would like to use the built in side by side app feature but for programs running in the desktop so I can have something like notepad++ or visual studio open on the left side of the screen and have a steam or twitch chat open on the right so I can free up my second monitor for full screen viewing of videos/games/websites. I know I can do this by resizing the windows manually but it is very clunky and harder to manage when I want to close a program or open new applications.
View 9 Replies View RelatedHow do I create a desktop shortcut for an application listed in the Start (ALL APPS) list in Windows 8?
I use Firefox and G-mail
I have accidently set my .ext default program to Notepad and I want to change it back to an unknown application I have tried deleting it in regedit and it just sets it back to notepad even when I restart my computer afterwards
View 9 Replies View RelatedWindows 8. All I want to do is pin a desktop icon to the taskbar. I've gone to every app on this pc, right clicked, left clicked, middle finger clicked, nose clicked, no luck.
Don't want to over simplify, but wouldn't it be great if one of those computer guru's had thought of this instruction?
"To put a desktop short cut on the task bar, right click on desktop and select pin to taskbar" or "just drag that huge desktop icon in windows to the taskbar"?
For some reason when I started up my laptop recently, all of the icons on both the taskbar and the desktop have turned invisible/disappear completely and I am unaware has to how to fix it. I have put a picture in the attachments that shows what the "icons" look like when they are highlighted and non-highlighted.
View 4 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to put an icon for the desktop in the taskbar? I just want to get to my desktop easily with one click.
The only way I know to do it now with one click is to left-click in the extreme lower right corner of my screen. The only problem with that is that the area I have to click in is so small that I'm always getting the clock. I can't do it quickly.
I used to have a desktop shortcut on the taskbar so necessary for getting back there without wading through tons of open apps..
Now I cannot put a desktop shortcut on the taskbar have been trying and failing.
If I go to the start tile board and click desktop I just get back to the top open app and then have to minimise and minimise to get the desktop.
Every 5 minuets or so my desktop goes completely blank, i loose icons, background, task-bar, (time, date, keyboard input selection) only thing that stays is the far right icons that stay (battery, internet connection, volume)
What causes this or why it occurs .....
Just cannot figure out how to do this. I want to access mail easily from the desktop taskbar in Win 8.1.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI've had a Windows 8.1 laptop (Acer) for a couple of months now. As of yesterday it's started to become unresponsive after an undefined period (say, 10 minutes) of unuse. So, when I turn on the computer, everything works fine. After I've left it alone for a while, I come back to it and find that the taskbar, desktop, and all windows buttons (minimize, maximize, close) have become unclickable, though other things (e.g. the tabs in Firefox) are still clickable. If I shut the computer down and restart it it's ok again, until it happens again.
This started yesterday: I hadn't installed any new programs yesterday.
I have my installation of Windows 8.1 desktop taskbar set to never combine, use small icons and locked. With XP I could pin a program to the taskbar, click it once and the program would open. Click the program icon a second time and a new instance of the program would open. With Win 8.1 if you click the icon the second time the window simply minimizes. How can I restore the old XP behavior. I realize that I can right-click on the icon after one instance is open and open another instance of the program. However, that is an additional step that is a pain in the butt.
I should add that I use the latest version of Classic Shell and have look through the settings and don't see any that can change this behavior.
My task bar on the desk top in Windows 8.1 has suddenly increased in size and now covers one third of the screen. How can I reduce this back to the single line.
View 7 Replies View Related(At least the Recycle Bin can be removed without a registry edit hack. These have always been my top 2 peeves of Windows.)
From the desktop view I simply want to look down and to the right to see the "Sunday, September 8, 2013 - 2:17PM" I see now ... but have to move my mouse over there and hover over it first. Why would I want to have to do that?
It wasn't possible in XP (that I know of) not without having to expand your taskbar to twice the width. (And let's face it, there is nothing quite as intimidating as a big huge fat thick taskbar.)
I was unpinning many apps from my start screen. Now when I try to run an app (such as Computer, or Control Panel) it creates an entry on the desktop taskbar, but not on the desktop.
I can't run anything on this Windows 8.0 desktop, except for IE. The only thing I can do with the taskbar icon is close the window.
Has to pin media player to the taskbar or a desktop shortcut, pref in libary mode so i can play my music easier.
[not got media centre just the media player in Windows 8 home that came preinstalled.]
I need to go into Program Files(x86)>Mozilla Firefox and click on the firefox logo in that folder for the Firefox page to appear.

I have installed Classic Shell in an attempt to eradicate as much of Windows 8 as possible. I managed to get the word "Desktop" onto the right side of the quick launch taskbar. I have to click on a tiny arrow next to that word. That brings up a desktop menu but doesn't go to the desktop itself.
How can I get a desktop icon (not the word "Desktop") on the left side of the taskbar next to the start button? In Windows 7 the icon was on the right side but I somehow managed to move it to the left side.
I know about Win D and Win M. Those are okay but I'd rather have an icon to click on to eliminate extra keystrokes.
This is how I have come to best like displaying the Applications folder I keep on my Windows8 Desktop Taskbar. Listed in alphabetical order it's how I can pull or access anything I may want @ any given moment w/out leaving Desktop to look for something. I simply scroll up & down for the desired item & it saves changing screens to go get something. A few, like Weather, Calendar, News I'll usually keep sitting on the APP Bar @ the top-left of the Desktop.
View 7 Replies View RelatedAt the bottom of my desktop/screen, I can see a thin line of the top of the taskbar. I have the taskbar on auto-hide, but tried it locked, unlocked, hidden, etc.
I tried different resolutions, restarts, images, and moving it. (It does it on all sides of the screen.)
I tried detect and identify in the resolution feature.
I did have this problem before and can't remember what I did to solve it. It turned out to be simple, but I just can't get it this time.
(The thin blue line at the bottom of the image, not the big white vertical bar.)
on the bottom and right side of the screen there is these lines where you can use your mouse to move your screen.but they are so tiny I can barely see them. on windows XP that I had just last month there was a way to enlarge them, so there must be a way to do that with windows 8.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to move a rar folder to MyGames folder and it's having none of it.. It just seems to be my MyGames folder and no other folders on my PC.
I am currently using Windows 8.1 is there a problem or a glitch with this? I currently have McAfee installed could this be apart of moving folders, copying folders to another folder?
I have checked all my permissions etc in the MyGames folder and they seem to be fine. I am trying to move folder to my Farming Simulator 2013 folder and it's not doing anything not even popping up with any kind of warning why my folder isn't copying, pasting correctly.
