Moving Program Icon From Desktop Back To Programs List
Dec 4, 2012
I found a way to get my list of programs on to the tool/task bar. From there I dragged one of the programs to the desktop thinking it would just create a shortcut. It didn't. It took the program off the dropdown list and put it on the desktop. I can't find a way to put it back in the drop down list of programs. I realize it's not earth shattering but it is definitely a huge annoyance to me since I want to have a 'shortcut' on both the programs drop down list and on the desktop.
I am running a Win 7 OS on an SSD and I have some programs installed on a different hard drive. And I want to move this program files folder on the same hard drive but different partition. Is it possible to do this without breaking the program links?
Is there a better than decent way to get to the program list in windows 8, similar to the one we used to have on the start menu, without installing 3rd party applications?
I've recently installed Start Menu 8 to create a win 7 menu and bypass the tiles, but now I don't see IE 10 listed anywhere. Where could it go? I didn't think you could get rid of IE10. I use Chrome as my default browser, but I would like to open IE 10 if needed.
My main PC is a desktop running Windows 7 and my homegroup was set up on this PC. I have a laptop running Windows 8 and joined the homegroup - seemingly successfully as the control panel indicates that it is in the group.
On the W7 desktop. The homegroup icon lists the laptop and allows me to access the laptop files. The network icon lists both the desktop and the laptop. I could also access the laptop files this way, but do not need to as I can access them via the homegroup icon.
On the Windows 8 laptop. The homegroup icon just lists the laptop user name and then the laptop itself. The desktop is not listed. The network icon lists both the laptop and the desktop. This allows me to access the desktop files, but I would prefer to access them via the the homegroup icon.
I have an odd installation issue. I installed an old app that I had when I was using windows xp. Its called Weatherbug Alert. Upon installation, it asks if you want a quick launch icon on the taskbar, and I said yes. It installed, but over by the little icons on the far right. I won't let me move it to were the large icons are on the left, by the start icon. And it won't let me resize it.
Dell Inspiron 3647, 3.0GHz, 4 gig's ram, all windows updates.
Not knowing it would cause problems for me later, I setup a home built computer with a symbolic link for the Users folder from my SSD drive (system drive C) to Drive D. When I found I couldn't update to Windows 8.1 I did some research and discovered I should not have used this method for moving the Users folder and I need to move it back first in order to update.
After doing some research, I decided to follow the knowledge base article found at [URL] .... as my guide to move it back to the system drive. I have started this process and I'm part way through but I have encountered a problem that I can't figure out how to solve.
I booted into safe mode with a command prompt and deleted the symbolic link on my C drive. I followed the instructions in the article to use robocopy to copy the Users folder from my D drive to my system drive but it fails because some system files (like ntuser.dat) can't be copied (presumably because they contain the system info for the account I'm logged into so I am locked out).
I'm not really sure how to get around this and I don't think I'd be able to reboot and get into my system right now unless maybe I recreate the symbolic link from the system drive to d:users.
I Just wanted to know how to make Media Monkey my default player for mp3 & Flac everything except videos, How do I Add Media Monkey to the 'Set Your Default Programs List' as it's not there? And its not listed in Desktop> Apps nor is it in Firefox > Tools > Options> Set Applications List Also whilst on MM (I think these may by related) If I open MM GUI the USER CONTOL WINDOW pops up and ask do you want this program to alter your computer etc IF I select MORE and set the Slider to 'do not ask for permission' the Windows Control window media monkey everything Freezes (wish I could get rid of it) only way out is to turn off the computer I was thinking it may be that MM is not the Default for Media Monkey GUI just guessing
I'd like to add a file extension to the list given in Control Panel/Default Programs. In WinXP it was really easy but I hardly needed to use it as there seemed to be a lot more extensions available anyway back then. Unbelievably, (well, to me anyway), MS seem to have omitted '.flac'. How do I go about it?
My laptop has an HD screen, 1920x1080 to be exact. Some of my desktop icons are out of focus and blurry, but others aren't. At first I assumed that those icons were not compatible with an HD screen or something, but then some of them fixed themselves. Others are still blurry.
I reset it because i can't pin anything thing it would clear it but now all my pinned programs have gone and i can't drop them back onto taskbar It show the little arrow when i drag it there then nothing
I have installed a new program (Soundswitch) that I want to keep and I need it running in the background. What I don't need is the icon in the notification area. I only use the program's keyboard shortcut and have no need for the GUI. I keep my notification area very clean and only have icons for the three things I actually use in it. Most programs offer a way to disable their own notification icon, but this one does not. And, unfortunately, hiding the icon through the Windows 8 options created another icon (arrow), which I don't want either.
Is there a way that I can keep the program running but have the icon removed from the notification area?
Last september i formatted my hdd and installed windows 8 ultimate, then updated to 8.1 ultimate, i don't exactly remember when but after some time it was installed desktop icons began to move by themselves. Last month i got an SSD and i decided to just reinstall windows 8.1 PRO from scratch. i did. After 1 or 2 days icons started moving by themselves again. i'm pretty sure there is a recurring way they do it, there must be an even that because of a bug triggers the movements, i haven't been able to determine it tough.
There isn't much more to say other than:
-"AutoArrange Icons" is disabled. -I tried to download some .ini fixes for similar problem but they fails. -I tried programs to manually restore icons position manually with a previous save. useless. -i have no viruses and no strange programs installed. -At the time i started having the problem i only had: StartIsBack 1.5.2, chrome and Visual Studio.
Assume I have read a message to which I wish to either post a question or ask for information from the author od the message (whose e-mail address is at the end of the message. I click on the his e-mail address and I get taken to the screen shown in the image attached.
Please note that "Windows Live Mail" is NOT listed as one of the alternatives. Is there a means whereby I can either add Windows Live Mail to the list or to change what happens when I click on the author's e-mail address so that I am taken to Windows Live mail rather than this list of potential e-mail programs?
So I upgraded to windows 8.1 a few weeks ago from 7 and I'm loving the performance boosts I get while playing games, the one thing that bugs me and it happens randomly, sometimes once a day, sometimes never happens at all for a day or two, sometimes it happens every couple hours.
What happens is that my taskbar will completely empty and then reload everything and my desktop will do the same, desktop background goes blank icons disappear and then suddenly wallpaper comes back and all my icons keep shifting all over the place between my two monitors.
I've also noticed if I have my taskbar set to my main monitor (left) when it refreshes like that it forces the taskbar to move to my secondary monitor (right).
What could be causing this issue? I do use Start8, but so far searching bugs on that nothing seems to show anything similar to what I'm getting and since it's happening to my desktop and not just the taskbar I've figured it has to be something with windows.
My PC specs are as follows:
i7 4770k Gigabyte R9 280x 16GB G-Skill DDR3 1600
Also, how to remove this from popping up in the bottom right corners of my desktop?
[URL] ......
Also, how do I disable the being able to drag the top of my desktop down and resizes my desktop, so many times moving my icons around after they get rearranged and I accidentally change my desktop size...
I recently used IOBit uninstaller to remove all traces of a program from the registry. I'm assuming it removed something that caused this issue, because after I used it all my program information in Add/Remove programs was missing. However, other users on my PC show all information in Add/Remove programs. Is there a way to repopulate this or would I have to create a new user?
See in the picture below , the program and features in control panel does not show all of my programs. It worked good in last week.i have about 30 programs but it show 16!!
I'm running windows 8 x64 and when I open 'Programs and Features' to uninstall a program, the 'Uninstall' button that is usually next to the 'Organize' button is missing. Also when I try to right click on most programs and left click the 'Uninstall' option, I get the message "An error occurred while trying to uninstall X. It may have already been uninstalled. Would you like to remove X from the Programs and Features list?" However, those programs have not been uninstalled.
I am trying to re install 8.0 using the option to re install all programs to Factory Settings. Downloads 99 programs and when it tries to do the updates it fails and then starts the reverting back to original programs. This seems never to finish.
I had done an Image backup so that I could go back to it in case of a failure.
I did not do the option to wipe the disk and then install to factory.
I also could not get my machine to use the Recovery DVD's. But did use the screens that ask you questions about recovery.
I did the recovery twice and it failed both times and never did get back to the first install.
Since there seems to be no reason for the failure in the 99 updates I am at a loss of whether I should try again and wipe the disk clean for C:/
I have been trying to put my Bank Of America site as an icon on the desktop, in the past when I chose to do this I right clicked on the program and got a scroll down with the option to " Create Shortcut", now when I try I do not get this option. I have Win 8.1, it has always worked previously with 8.1..
Is there a way to put an icon for the desktop in the taskbar? I just want to get to my desktop easily with one click.
The only way I know to do it now with one click is to left-click in the extreme lower right corner of my screen. The only problem with that is that the area I have to click in is so small that I'm always getting the clock. I can't do it quickly.
