I have downloaded some applications, and it won't allow me to delete them (it keeps saying the file is open in that application--I checked task manager, and there's nothing there). I read that a program called Unlocker can work, but when I try to run the setup, nothing happens. This is happening for all applications in my Download folder.

I'm now running the windows 8 64 bit OS, and logged by a Microsoft account.
Now I am doing some work using Visual Studio and encouter some problems about the PATH variable.
1. Under current Microsoft account, I cannot see the full PATH variable neither in CMD or the Environment Variables dialog, the figures below shows the current view:
This is my current PATH
and, of course, I set it under system variables.
Well, this path works fine in command line executing, but in visual studio, it doesn't work.
2. So, lets see what I have in visual studio (run as administrator):
Code:
System.Environment.GetEnvironmentVariable("path");
"C:Windowssystem32;C:Windows;C:WindowsSystem32Wbem;C:WindowsSystem32
WindowsPowerShellv1.0;C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server110ToolsBinn;
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft SQL Server110ToolsBinn;C:Program
[Code]....
If you're willing to look at the text above, you'll find that this "PATH" is totally different with the one we set in Environment Variables dialog or get from the CMD.
I want to use some executable files in "d:commonin" with my web application hosted by IIS8, but I found that the web application could not find the executable files in "d:commonin", which should exist in "PATH"
Well, though I can just put the executable files into system32,

On my old Win 7 and Win Vista and Win XP laptops I've had no problems opening and viewing my old MPEG-2 video files. My new laptop running Win 8.1 will not allow me to view them.
Windows Media Player will only recognize them as audio files - not video - though the sound will play. Real Player is the same - the application will open and begin playing a file but only as audio file. I've tried the built in Toshiba media player and it shows errors and won't open the files at all.
Again - these are conforming MPEG-2 NTSC 760X480 video file (old analog home movies) captured using an ATI video card dongle to connect to my video source and an old version of capture application ULead Video Studio. These files conform in every way to MPEG-2 standard/format and will run on all of our PC EXCEPT the new one running Win 8.
I bought and loaded a video editing application from Corel and it will open and play these files perfectly so why won't Win Media Player and Real Player recognize them when running behind Windows 8?

I have been using windows 8 for just about a week now. I have made a new admin local account and have deleted the old admin local account but when I go into C:/Users the deleted user account files are still there. When I go to delete these files, a message comes up telling me that I don't have the permission to delete these files. I have read online and searched alot but came across no fix. I have tried turning of windows features, then I tried deleting the files through command prompt using rd /s /q but still no luck. I tried this method using safe mode command prompt but still no luck.

I have a TB drive and when I was trying to delete some files, it crashed. As a consequence, the recycle bin has some invalid information in it. If I try to perma-delete files in there, the system freezes. I try to restore files, it freezes. When I tried to restore files, it also asked me if I wanted to replace the files in the respective locations that it was restoring to, which to me means that the files are still there and its in some kind of limbo.
I'm sure this problem is at least somewhat related to the hybrid boot feature with the crashes. I dual boot with Linux Mint 15. I think that upon messing with some files on the TB drive and going back to Windows caused it to... well I'll say have a seizure. Now I've done chkdsks and it never seems to truly finish. It gets to the end, and sits there, and maybe even freeze or crash. But when I do a chkdsk I can usually access my files in Linux in read-only mode.
While, in Windows 8, I can still access everything perfectly fine. I can read, write, and do what I want normally so long as it doesn't involve anything with the recycle bin. Also, say I try to go to the files on the HDD that I tried to delete but are still there and delete them, it freezes crashes.
I've also disabled that hybrid boot feature and have attempted clean shutdowns and in some cases it would even freeze on shutdown. Also I've done both chkdsk /r and chkdsk /f with the only difference that one takes hours and the other doesn't.

I can seem to delete or empty the file of my deleted or junk emails. I can individually do them by clicking the trash button, but then they go to the trash and I can empty that unless I go through each one. I don't have time to do this on 50-100 emails a day! I can empty through outlook but they are still in my windows 8 mail!

So during setup of my laptop I created a few different accounts and then deleted some, so I now only have the one account left. Below is a picture of the folders I mean. The "joey_000" is the actual one for my account, the other 2 have nothing in them.
I made the other 2 accounts trying to change the name of the folder from "joey_000" to just my name, but it couldnt be done so I just left it. The other two folders are there and when I try to delete them, that error message comes up. I just want to be rid of them because the accounts to which they are linked have been deleted and they serve no purpose and are annoying.

I wanted to delete some audio tracks from a cd I made. They won't delete.
The Windows 8 message says to go to Disk Cleaner and chose "D Drive " from the drop down menu, however, there is NOT Drop Down Menu and the only thing Disk Cleaner goes to is to clean files on the C Drive.
Doesn't microsoft even know how its lousy operating system, which is universally detested, works?
What a disaster Windows 8 is., At least I got a older type starter button through the MIT guys, which makes it more palatable. Oh yeah, the Windows Explorer also leaves a lot to be desired.

I am planning to format my laptop. I have C and D. I want to completely delete drive C and make a partition of 200GB instead of 217GB. Then I want to take that leftover partition (17GB) and add it to D to have 250GB. On the D, I have my files and photos. I use C for OS and programs only. So if I take that leftover and merge it to D, will D get corrupted?

Never had this problem before I have two files in an otherwise empty folder but there are no extensions after the file name. I can't add an extension to the files. I can't rename them or move them or delete them. Every time i try any of these things i am being told that: "the element wasn't found. It is no longer located in (insert name here) control the elements place and try again"
What that means. I even tried to delete them from the cmd...

I use SkyDrive as my cloud storage and have 5GB of files in it.
But I want it to be IN THE CLOUD and hidden, not accesible to everyone using my laptop and not duplicate copies of the files in my hard disk (actually triplicate copies).
For example, let's say my 3GB music collection. I keep a copy in my hard disk within "My Music", a copy in the cloud in Skydrive, but now I have a third copy in my hard disk within the Skydrive folder, which I didn't want and I wasn't asked about.
Microsoft assumed I want this third copy for some reason and downloaded everything automatically to this Skydrive folder. Great.
So, the first thing I do is uninstalling Skydrive, if I want to upload something I do it via browser, but the folder and copy of my files is still there.
My question is, can I delete those files, my music collection and so on without deleting at the same time the copy in the cloud? I mean, if I delete them here they will be deleted in the cloud too?

I recently installed a new ssd and did a fresh install of windows 8.1 on it. I am now using my old hdd as my main data drive in my laptop caddy. My problem is I did not back up my data on my hdd and format it. So I need to delete the "windows" , "program files" and "program files (x86) " folders from that hdd to free up some space.
I understand I have to give ownership to those folders for me to be able to do delete the folders. I have tired the methods suggested by this guide Take Ownership of a File, Folder, Drive, or Registry Key in Windows 8 I tried both of those commands
(To grant currently logged on user ownership of) takeown /F "full path of folder or drive" /R /D Y (To grant administrators group ownership of) takeown /F "full path of folder or drive" /A /R /D Y and it was succesful, however I still couldn't delete the folders.

I have moved my boot files to the "C" drive using EasyBCD. In so doing, is it now safe to delete the System Reserve Partition? I realize it does no harm the way it is but I have no intention of using Bitlocker and I have a recovery disc. So, to me, it serves no purpose and I'd like to get rid of it.

Alright, so I was in another OS, and decided to copy over some files. The problem is when I got into Windows it gave me disk errors. So I allowed Windows to repair them automatically, and everything was dandy. But the files that were transferred are nowhere to be seen on both Operating Systems, but the disk space is still being taken up (About 100GB) so how on earth do I get rid of this phantom space?

Recently I installed latest Windows 8.1 update (Update 1/Spring update), and later latest Beta Nvidia driver. After that, an strange problem showed up. I recorded a video which represents it (look at the thumbnail 'hiding' under the previewed application ).
I'm using UxStyle and this theme: Windows 8.1 White Titlebar Dark theme by x0lis on deviantART . I tried:
Uninstalling UxStyle and themeInstalling 'normal' Nvidia driverDoing sfc /scannow but it didn't find anything particular (something about prncacla.inf, but I don't think that this causes this problem)Scanning system with antivirus (KIS 2014)Turning off and on option 'Enable preview' in Advanced setting -> PerformanceChanging theme to otherSearching about this in Google and this forum, but I didn't find anything similar but nothing worked.
Well I didn't tried uninstalling Update 1, but I would like to avoid that.

However, after I close certain games, that might run in fullscreen, and some don't like Minecraft, I can't open any other programs. Not task manager, I can't even shut down my PC. I have a Windows 8 Kiosk running and would like to have a video playing on it all the time. However, I want someone to be able to tap the screen to play it. The video ends and has to be tapped to be played again. And the screen is locked on this video only, so a client couldn't access any other part of the computer.
Is that something that I should be looking into some sort of media playing OS or is there any application that could do this task?
