Moved Boot Files To C - Safe To Delete System Reserve Partition?

Nov 12, 2013

I have moved my boot files to the "C" drive using EasyBCD. In so doing, is it now safe to delete the System Reserve Partition? I realize it does no harm the way it is but I have no intention of using Bitlocker and I have a recovery disc. So, to me, it serves no purpose and I'd like to get rid of it.

Setup Installation :: EFI System Partition Missing Files - Repair Disk Won't Boot?

Nov 30, 2013

While I was messing around with my laptop, I decided to add on a fourth operating system, Arch Linux. I suppose I was pushing my luck a bit . Anyways, during the installation, I accidentally deleted the EFI system partition from my laptop, which contained the Windows Boot Manager and necessary files to boot. Great. I only made things worse by trying to troubleshoot, and broke grub as well.

I have a Windows 8 repair disk I made using the Windows 8 built in utility, but it does not boot: the computer turns on, and just hangs at the Toshiba splash screen.

I also can obviously not access the Toshiba recovery partitions, as they are booted into just like Windows itself.

I found a bootx64.efi file on one of my system's recovery partitions (Toshiba seems to have some really complex system going on) and placed it in EFIootootx64.efi. According to this site, FGA: The EFI boot process., I need to place the bkpbootmgfw.efi (on my system, that was what it was called, but I suspect boot-repair (ubuntu tool) messed something up when I was first setting up grub and the ESP and the bkp stands for backup) back onto the EFI System Partition.

Where to look for in the various Windows Imaging Format .wim and .swm files I have laying around my recovery partition(s) in order to extract the necessary EFI files. Any Windows Repair iso that works.

Move / Delete The System Reserved Partition?

Feb 4, 2013

I was recently messing around with installing Windows 8 on an external USB 3.0 HDD (NOT a flash drive) (How To Install Windows 7 On USB Flash Drive or External Hard Drive), and found website that showed a method for doing so by way of a "NT6 Fast Installer". I tried many times to get it to work and just when I was about to give up it finally succeeded. I rebooted into the external drive (unplugged my internal HDD) and it finished installing successfully. After booting/logging in for the first time I noticed that performance was near-native to what it would be if you ran it from an internal HDD. Games even ran well. But I noticed that there was only 1 partition and no System Reserved, and it appeared that the boot files were located on the C drive.

So my question is, on a regular 8 installation to an internal HDD, how can you delete System Reserved and move the boot files to the C drive? Is there any advantage in doing so (or disadvantages)? I just figured that with a C drive and a System Reserved that makes 2 primary partitions out of an available 4 being taken up, by having everthing on C you would only have 1 primary partition and 8 would still work. The steps listed at the above website are meant for 7 and Vista, but I tested them to the tee and they worked without modification on 8. I just had to flag the partition as active/bootable before booting into it for the first time, or else it would throw an error. I know alot of people think that it cant be done or is hard to do, but it can. But that's not what I'm trying to prove. It essentially amounts to being almost the same thing, if not exactly the same, as Windows To Go, except that you're installing via an unofficial method since the official installer wont allow installation to a USB HDD.

All Files Moved To The Root Of Documents?

Jan 22, 2013

I have had this happen once before, I am running Windows 8 on an OCZ Vertex 4 SSD.The problem is that suddenly all my files inside all the directories and sub directories in my Documents folder have been moved to the root of Documents and have all been named with their original directory location in the filename. To give a clear example: a file originally located in Rockstar GamesL.A. Noiresettings.ini is now in my root Documents folder under the name Rockstar Games_L.A. Noire_settings.ini

All of the folders and sub-folders in my Documents are empty and all of the files are in Documents with those names. They all follow the pattern of having the directory in the filename separated by underscores . I have over 11K files now sitting in my Documents and all my programs that require files in my Documents folder are now broken.

I am unable to move my boot data to another partition. Please have a look at the following picture-:

As you can see I have created a separate a partition before my C drive and formatted it.

I have used the following command to copy the boot data from my C drive to the System partition(S:)

bcdboot C:Windows /s S: /f BIOS

But as you can see C drive is still marked as "System" which means my PC isn't actually booting from drive S:.

How do I force my system to boot from drive S: and not drive C: ???

Dual Boot System - Which Partition Holds Windows 8

Oct 24, 2013

which partition holds Windows 8 on my Dual Boot 7/8 system. I want to delete Windows 8 64 bit and reinstall Windows 8 32 bit, then update to Windows 8.1. I'm doing this because the system's old enough that 64 bit 8.1 won't install but maybe 32 bit will. I won't know unless I try.

I need to figure out which partition Windows 8 is on so I can format the drive and reinstall.

Windows 8 Multi Boot Partition Says Its Empty But Has Files?

Feb 12, 2014

I recently tried to install Ubuntu 12.10, and lost access to Windows 7 and 8.1, after a LOT of looking for bootable disks and stuff, I did fix it.

After recovering the operating systems (I had to delete Ubuntu partitions and then fix the Windows 7 bootloader, because there was 6 primary partitions), the Windows 8.1 partition says its 10.0GB and empty, but when I double click on it, you can see the files inside.

This is bad, because when I try to boot in Windows 8, it gets to the login screen after a long boot time, then it just shows the time, battery, and internet status, and the rest is a blue screen, implying its broken. I found out this is because some OS files are missing, which might be related to the above paragraph. I have lots of paid software in Windows 8, and it was LOTS of downloading, so I dont want to wipe the drive, or have to touch the data, only be able to boot into Windows 8 again.

When I open in a partition viewer, it shows the 70GB partition as it should, and also

Setup Installation :: Is It Safe To Resize WindowsRE Hard Drive Partition

Jul 3, 2014

Here's my situation. My computer is running Windows 8.1 There is only 1 physical HD, but it has many partitions. Here is a picture of my current HD setup

The problem is that the WRE partition is literally sitting between my C and D drives, so when I shrink the C drive partition, I cannot extend the D drive with the unallocated space because it is not sitting right next to the D drive (I'm trying to shrink the C from 370 to ~60 GB, then extend the D from 550 to 850 GB with the C drive's unallocated space).

However, I found something called "AOMEI partition manager", which will let me shrink the C drive, extend the WRE partition with the unallocated space, and then shrink the WRE partition to get the unallocated space next to the D drive so I can extend it. So I'm basically using the WRE partition as a middleman between the C and D drives.

I'll still have the WRE partition (after extending and reshrinking it), my system partitions, recovery partition and everything like that. I just don't know if resizing the WRE partition like that will make it nonfunctional or something, even though all the data will still be on it.

FYI I have already created a full hard disk image with Acronis of the current hard drive setup before trying anything. I also have a USB drive that is bootable with a Windows 8.1 ISO that I was initially going to use to just completely format the hard drive and use Acronis as my recovery program instead of Windows recovery partitions, but I'm too worried about the EFI boot partition and all that stuff and possibly making my computer unbootable.

Jan 30, 2013

I have win 8 pro installed & two HDDs with two partions each , I want to migrate the boot partition to another partition on the second drive .

It would have been easier if i would have just cloned the complete drives but one of the partions on the 2nd drive has data which cannot be deleted .

So I have Drive

1 - Partitions C: ( boot partition ) & D:

Drive 2 - Partitions E: & F:

I want to remove Drive 1 from my PC so i want to copy C: to E: then remove drive 1 & boot from E:

I tried "Easeus todo backup" , did not work, it does not make the copy bootable , to make it bootale the whole drive has to be copied .

I tried making an image of C: using Windows 8 inbuilt backup feature then removed drive 1 , installed Windows 8 on E: then tried restoring the image of C: but i got some error.

How To Delete MSR (Microsoft Reserved) Partition - Inspiron 7520

Aug 13, 2013

My Inspiron 7520 laptop arrived today and I've been trying to get the various Intel features to work on it. I've got the rapid storage (ssd cache drive) set up but I think I may have broken the rapid start feature of it along the way. Now when I start the laptop I get an error saying 'your system does not appear to have intel rapid start enabled'. When entering my BIOS, the intel Rapid Start Technology is greyed out and I can't click it.

I thought it may have been because i set all available space on my SSD to the rapid storage feature. So I changed it and made it so that it only takes about 20gb (of the 32gb) and tried to follow the intel guide of setting up the rapid start feature [URL] ....., however I received an error on the part where it said 'setid=84 override' which said my partition it was not of the right type or format. So after reading another guide online it said to try using the partition type of MSR instead of Primary. So I tried that and now the partition is hidden from disk management and I can't seem to delete it from diskpart either.

Tablets :: How To Boot Into Safe Mode

Sep 11, 2013

SVF1521P2EB from PC world.Trying to use a recovery program I always use for all my laptops and desktops and have created a bootable USB Stick and also a DVD bootable disk. Both disk and usb work on all other systems but this Sony Laptop.

Have USB stick in the usb2 port not the usb3 port due to compatibility issues with backup/restore on usb3. The stick is a usb2. I have gone into bios and set usb and also tried dvd as first boot device. Will not boot.

Have tried the assist button on the laptop and the restore (boot from dvd/usb media) also does not work, as stated these both work on other laptops and desktops.

I have tried to find the boot option menu or safe mode startup. I have tried this by pressing various buttons each time on boot usually F2, Del, esc, F12, F10 on other systems and also F8 which does not appear to enable the laptop to start with a manual boot.

All I seem to achieve is the Vaio screen and straight to Windows8.

I do see the sony recognise the usb as the green light is flashing, no message of boot failure.

1) What is the boot option at startup to manually select a boot device.

2) How to boot into safe mode.

3) How to possibly rid the boot up screen displaying the VAIO logo.

4) Get the Sony to recognise either the bottable dvd or usb to backup the system without using the sony or built in miscrosoft bootup.

Final result should be a full image backup of the hard drive ona an extarnal harddrive/usb stick for future restoration.
