Setup Installation :: Windows 8.1 Upgrade - Blackscreen With Pointer / Safe Mode Too

Aug 8, 2014

After windows 8.1 update (via windows store free upgrade) the system will go through its initializing sequence then go to a black screen w/ pointer.

I have this issue both in windows and safe mode. I have attempted to follow these steps and while I can try this, non offer the ability to install anew driver. Here it stays.

I have read this is normally caused by a graphics driver issue. In several cases the thread was closed, as the user was able to resolve the issue... but left no conclusion.

Laptop is ASUS Q400a
Asus Q400A-BHI7N03 Specifications:

Display: 14″ LED-backlit TFT-LCD HD widescreen display (1366 x 768 resolution)
Processor: 3rd Gen Intel Core i7-3632QM CPU, 6MB L3 cache, 2.2GHz processor speed, max. TurboBoost frequency 3.2GHz
Graphics: Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics
Memory: 8GB DDR3 1,600MHz RAM
Storage: 500GB SSD
Optical drive: DVD burner
Webcam: 1.0MP webcam
Audio: stereo speakers
Network: Wireless-N,
Gigabit Ethernet, no Bluetooth
Input: Backlit chiclet-style keyboard with numeric-pad, multitouch touchpad
Ports and Slots: 2 x USB 3.0 ports, 1 x USB 2.0 port, 1 x HDMI, media card reader Battery:

It would appear (now), during step 8 here, that the ASUS driver (VGA_Intel_Win81_64_VER101810330802) should be updated for 8.1. This seems to have been the missed step. This doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere. This is an observation is from self deduction.

So, How do I push/install the correct driver?

Screen Greyed In Normal Mode But Vibrant In Safe Mode

Jan 2, 2014

My screen seems to have a grey filter overlaying it. See attached.

When i booted it in safe mode, the screen is showing the right vibrant colors. When i booted it back to normal mode, the screen is greyish but strangely the mouse is showing the correct white color.

I have googled across numerous website but none of them bring me closer to the issue. I have read the thread, Personalize Suddenly Greyed Out but this is not what i encountered. The options or buttons or selections did not grey out, it affects the screen only.

I cannot afford a system restore because i shared this laptop with my gf.

Setup Installation :: Does Windows 8.1 Setup Delete Everything

Oct 23, 2013

I'm currently using windows 7 and want to install 8.1

I just launched the setup, and on the window where it asks what to keep, the only option is 'Nothing'.

Does windows 8.1 setup delete everything I've got on my current partition, or will it transfer my current system into a windows.old folder like Windows 7 Setup does?

Because I really need to keep my files.

Is There A Safe Mode In Windows 8?

Feb 23, 2013

Does Windows 8 have a Safe Mode and were do I find it. the reason I ask this is because I have tried going into Safe Mode in Windows 8 by hitting the F8 key so I could run my virus scanner to see if there are any virus that it may not be finding under normal mode. But when I reboot my computer and try going into safe mode in Windows 8 nothing happens.

Windows 8.1 - How To Get Into Safe Mode

Nov 19, 2013

HP DV6 6121tx

I was trying to get AMD drivers working properly so that FIFA would stop crashing. I read somewhere that installing the latest AMD Catalyst Beta with separate Intel drivers would work. I tried that, rebooted, and now I have a black screen after the Windows splash logo, with my mouse pointer visible if I move my mouse. So clearly something went wrong with the graphics driver installation.

No problem, I'll just simply boot into safe mode, uninstall the drivers, and experiment with some other drivers. But no. F8 doesn't work, I know. Shift-F8 doesn't either. So I got my installation media, surely there would be a way to boot into safe mode with it!

Here's what I get.

There's supposed to be a 'Startup Options' button here, but for SOME reason, it's not. I have no clue what to do. I cannot fathom HOW Microsoft managed to make booting into SAFE MODE such a puzzle for an end user.

Some more background: After a similar graphics driver adventure last week, I got into safe mode (phew), tried to uninstall AMD drivers. I got an error about how this the installer cannot run in safe mode (what?!). I tweak some registry key to get it working. It failed to uninstall properly. I rebooted, and then I was absolutely unable to get OUT OF safe mode. Nothing I did changed that, each and every time Windows booted to safe mode.

I can't remember the last time I had such a bad experience with a Microsoft product. backing up files in my C: drive and simply installing regular Windows 8 over this. BUT I can't access my C: drive via Ubuntu because Windows has LOCKED that partition because of it's fast-boot nonsense.

Setup Installation :: Delete Windows 8 Partition?

My disk situation is as in the attached screenshot. I have two Windows 8 installed on 2 different partitions of the same SSD. Now I would like to remove the first installation, Windows 8 (H: )

The problem is that the Windows 8 (H: ) partition is marked as System, Active so from reading the forum I know there may be some problems with bootmgr... but I can't understand exactly what to do.

Windows 8.1 Won't Boot Even Into Safe Mode?

Jan 6, 2014

I can't boot into Windows 8.1 at all or even safe mode..I have tried startup repair etc etc ....I also tried the bcdedit trick to boot directly into Safe mode with the command prompt option no dice either..I would rather not do a refresh or reset pc..Matter of fact I have tried both options and even with a clean 8.1 disk I can't ....It gives me the error message remove cd or media and restart no matter whether i have the disk on or not. i think it might be a problem with the boot or something or its booting to the wrong device perhaps a USB ? i do have bitlocker on the drives and when i got to do a startup repair it asks for my key and i obv have it on other media which is my usb which won't read the key from it anymore..

How To Start Windows 8.1 In Safe Mode

Nov 13, 2013

I recently tried to update my graphic driver through Windows Update and it caused the screen to go black. I thought I would be able to boot in safe mode and restore the changes, but it does not seem to be as easy as that in Windows 8.

I can access BIOS with F2, but nothing happens when I hold down or tap F8. I have tried to search around for a solution, but they are either not working, require the OS-CD or me to be able to log in somehow...

Setup Installation :: Is It Safe To Resize WindowsRE Hard Drive Partition

Jul 3, 2014

Here's my situation. My computer is running Windows 8.1 There is only 1 physical HD, but it has many partitions. Here is a picture of my current HD setup

The problem is that the WRE partition is literally sitting between my C and D drives, so when I shrink the C drive partition, I cannot extend the D drive with the unallocated space because it is not sitting right next to the D drive (I'm trying to shrink the C from 370 to ~60 GB, then extend the D from 550 to 850 GB with the C drive's unallocated space).

However, I found something called "AOMEI partition manager", which will let me shrink the C drive, extend the WRE partition with the unallocated space, and then shrink the WRE partition to get the unallocated space next to the D drive so I can extend it. So I'm basically using the WRE partition as a middleman between the C and D drives.

I'll still have the WRE partition (after extending and reshrinking it), my system partitions, recovery partition and everything like that. I just don't know if resizing the WRE partition like that will make it nonfunctional or something, even though all the data will still be on it.

FYI I have already created a full hard disk image with Acronis of the current hard drive setup before trying anything. I also have a USB drive that is bootable with a Windows 8.1 ISO that I was initially going to use to just completely format the hard drive and use Acronis as my recovery program instead of Windows recovery partitions, but I'm too worried about the EFI boot partition and all that stuff and possibly making my computer unbootable.

Safe Mode Is Black Screen With Blinking Mouse - Windows 8.1

Sep 15, 2014

I am using Windows 8.1 with all the latest updates.

I'm trying to get into safe mode, but when I do it is only a black screen with in each corner it says "Safe Mode" and the whole screen blinks every few seconds resetting the cursors position. The cursor and text are only visible when I am moving the mouse, otherwise it's all black. I can't do any button combinations like CTRL ALT DEL or anything.

Normal mode works fine, and I can't think of any viruses/malware that work allow you to work in normal... but not safe mode.

I have all my Windows 8 options disabled (Windows 8 mode, fast boot, secure boot) to see if it was those but to no avail.

Every time I try, I have to go into safe mode. It sticks, so I can't just reboot/reset and go back into normal mode. I have to go into the emergency cmd and do bcdedit to delete the safeboot value.

I usually clean my PC every so often, the same with OS re-installation but nothing is wrong with the normal mode and the OS still seems quite fast with the SSD.

I have never seen safe mode function, this is the first attempt at running it in safe mode. What could cause this? I can't get into safe mode but can get into normal mode...
