I have a windows 8 partition and vista partition. I want to uninstall VISTA, how do I do this? Do I set windows 8 as my active partition and just delete VISTA partition under disk management?
View 9 RepliesMy Vista running laptop recently died. It boots as far as the screen saying it didn't boot properly last time and suggesting I boot into Safe Mode etc. Whatever I chose it doesn't work. I can boot into Ubuntu via USB disc so I know the laptop is fine.
My laptop has a genuine Vista license key but I don't have any install or recovery discs. Is there any way I can install Windows 8 using the upgrade license while it is still cheap?
I have been given a dell inspiron 531 with 64 bit AMD processor, running 32 bit vista home basic, that has responded well to RAM upgrade to 4GB.
I want to install 64 bit win 8 pro media centre which I have on an original MS CD. either over current vista or on separate partition as dual boot.
For some reason the dell wont read the MS win 8 64 disk (or any other original MS OS disks I have (vista-32/7-64/8-32)) but reads pretty much everything else (DVD's excepted as currently has no DVD reading software.)..either through explorer or during boot..it is not only original ms discs that are a problem as dell won't read Windows 8-64 enterprise trial iso I burned myself either.
I have tried turning off security software (MS security essentials/MS firewall)..no change.
CD's all read fine via explorer on my lightly hopped up HP tx1340ea running win 8-64 pro media centre.
Is this possible? I have a code and I've just been researching/trying to work out how to do this for the past few days with no real success. As far as I'm aware I could make my own bootable USB/disk but the windows 8.1 updater doesn't work on Vista. I thought I could maybe make the USB with my brother's PC which runs 8.1 but the program asks for the code and I'm not sure whether that would lock that code to his PC or not.
Failing that I thought I could maybe download the iso (I think that's what it's called) and make the USB without the official windows 8.1 program though I'm not sure of that either.
I have a Windows 8 / Vista dual boot - Windows 8 on SSD on C: and Vista on HDD on D: (data only on E: ) I have not used Vista since installing Windows 8 and now want to remove to free up some space and remove dual boot
Is there an option to keep my files on the drive but simply remove the Vista OS folder and remove the dual boot option? Or do I need to follow process here and "delete volume" and then copy all the files across again from backup?
If I do need to "delete volume" my first issue is that this option is greyed out and cannot be selected for D: drive? How can I sort this? also what do I do with 11GB recovery partition and 3.54GB OEM partition?

The laptop I have is an ASUS g74, I purchased the copy of windows 8 from microsoft's site, upgrading from windows 7 pro. I opted to keep all my personal files/apps because the programs it warned me as being incompatible were random games and such.
I googled this problem, and it seemed fairly common months ago when windows 8 first came out on dell/HP laptops. It worked flawlessly when I first upgraded and booted up fine but once I restarted I couldn't see anything other than the screen occasionally flickering brighter and darker.
However, if I plug my laptop up to a TV with an HDMI cable I can see everything on the TV. It's just the laptop screen that is blank.
I originally had windows 8 prowmc licensed (I have the iso image for that in case I need to reinstall); I upgraded /updated from store free update; now I have a valid licensed 8.1 running; but I don't have an iso; and if I have to re-install, I have to install 8, activate it and again do a 3.5 gb download to update;
I read from DISM that I can make a install.wim image from the existing hdd OS partition; so is it possible to create an image for the existing 8.1 OS?
I'm working on a Toshiba L75D-A7283. Upon checkin, symptoms were booting up to a black screen to log in, then a black screen with cursor after that. Fixed that with a system restore point and a virus removal.My coworker upgraded the machine to 8.1 over the weekend without a Microsoft Account. When it failed, he put the machine into audit mode, I'm guessing so that we could have updates finished and have the system set up with a Microsoft Account when the customer came back in.
However, we can't get it out of audit mode. We've tried several things, including this:Sysprep Error with windows 8.1 At the setupact log, the error that presents is: spopk.dll: Sysprep will not run on an upgraded OS. You can only run Sysprep on a custom (clean) install version of Windows.
At that point the sysprep fails, and I'm stuck in audit mode after a restart. I don't know how to get this machine back to vanilla Windows 8 without a full reinstall.

I just launched the setup, and on the window where it asks what to keep, the only option is 'Nothing'.
Does windows 8.1 setup delete everything I've got on my current partition, or will it transfer my current system into a windows.old folder like Windows 7 Setup does?
Because I really need to keep my files.
My disk situation is as in the attached screenshot. I have two Windows 8 installed on 2 different partitions of the same SSD. Now I would like to remove the first installation, Windows 8 (H: )
The problem is that the Windows 8 (H: ) partition is marked as System, Active so from reading the forum I know there may be some problems with bootmgr... but I can't understand exactly what to do.

However I saw a thread when someone performed a clean install and didn't lost the recovery partition. Yes, I really do want to delete the recovery partition because it's on my secondary HDD, I still have the recovery partition on my C: so I'm really not losing anything ....
put Windows 8 recovery on a 1TB ext HDD; Decided after to put on smaller HDD & copied to it. Now my 1TB ext HDD reads empty but only 31.9GO! Tried format & Seatools, which says everything ok. How to get my HDD to full capacity again?
I would also like to delete the recovery from the main HDD & save space. I was given this option at the time but can't find it now?

Both computers can see each other, but they only see the "Public" files. I would like to access the entire hard drive of the laptop. I turned off the password protection, right clicked "Share with everyone".
I dual-booted Vista and Win 8. I created a small ~20GB partition where I have my Windows 8 Release Preview. Now I really like it, because Vista is really slow compared to any other OS. Windows 8 is blazing fast, but I have programs on my Vista partition. I make music so I use Ableton Live for that. When I tried to launch Ableton in Windows 8 by browsing through the Vista partition, it wants to install itself and authorize again. If I was on Windows 7 64-bit I would use the Laplink PCMover but I am on Vista 32-bit. Is there a way I could transfer my programs to Windows 8? (They're all 32-bit if it matters...) Like use some backup & restore thing or anything??

I receive a username and PW entry box.
On my Vista I do not log in with a PW. My account name is HOME and has no PW and it is set up as Adminwhch may be different than a machine admin-not sure.
I assume that would be the user name would be home. But Home and no PW was not accepted by the Win 8 machine for the Vista machine
I used the Easy Windows Backup on my old machine (running vista), saved to an external hard drive. Installed the latest 8.1.1 on a new machine and tried to use the Easy Windows Backup to restore my stuff, but I get this message "Windows Easy Transfer can't transfer files from Windows Vista or Windows XP".
Is there any way I can recover my files from the Easy Transfer Backup?
My contacts are in apps. windows 8 and in outlook 2013. I wish to use them on the computer of my friend working with windows vista. I can export my contacts in .pst folder or in common separated values but I don't know how to open and/or use the folder with the contacts in windows vista.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a HP Envy 4 Ultrabook and I want to install Windows 8 from scratch, I put the installation files on a flash drive from a DVD of Win 8 I had, but when I go to install it, it says the "We couldn't find any drives". I have tried using DiskPart within the CMD as well, but it only finds my flash drive when I run list disk. Also, my drives are completely formatted, and I accidentally wiped the recovery partition. I tried with a USB of Win 8 Pro, and it was fine, showing all of my drives correctly, but that version is linked to another PC, so I can't install it. Also, I booted into a Linux Mint live CD and tried to install it, it sees my hard drive correctly, but the Windows install does not, I can't figure this out, never encountered it before. Is Linux my only option at this point?

I am not actually trying to install to a flash drive. I contacted Microsoft and after 5 hours they said that I should connect to the internet with a cable and not by wireless in order to solve the problem (this didn't work of course and I had told them that it was an install problem and not a download problem).
Until very recently i was running Windows 8 with a 240 GB Sandisk SSD as a primary and a 2 TB Western Digital Green HDD as a storage. I decided to set up a RAID 1 setup so i purchased a second 2 TB HDD and installed it.
My intent was to run windows 8 off the 240 SSD as a primary and have a RAID 1 setup for my 2TB HDDs.
I learnt that my data configuration was set to AHCI. I decided to do a complete clean install and change the sata configuration in BIOS to RAID.
After successfully creating a RAID volume using my 2TB HDDs i proceeded to install Windows off my primary. I am however having difficulties in that it will not allow me to install windows on either drive.
Im trying to install Windows 8 (Not 8.1) but it gets stuck at the booting screen (Where setup shuold load files)
My system specs are on my profile.
I am trying to setup a new Windows 8 computer that is going to be a gift. I need to go through the setup procedure so I can install some software which is also part of the gift. How can I do this without having to use a Microsoft account, or at least with leaving the least amount of account remnants for the new user?

What I have tried do to fix:
Run WindowsUpdateDiagnostic (that e.g. removes files from C:WindowsSoftwareDistributionDownload and cleans Windows update history metadata info)DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /ScanhealthDISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthDISM.EXE /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup
After all of this, still the update (KB2919355) fails
There must be something that Microsoft needs to fix, there are xxxxxxxxxxxx amount of similar complains and reports out there...
I decided to install Win 8.1 RTM x64 yesterday but what I expected to be a breeze turned into a nightmare. Installation fails, I am even unable to get into Safe Mode.
I was running Win 7 Ultimate x64 before without any issues whatsoever.

I have recently formatted my old windows. But now I am not able to install windows 8(actually even windows XP and seven) . When I try to boot from USB setup starts But 'Getting files ready' (which is second step of installation) stucks at midway like at 14% or 52% or 74% i.e. at any arbitary percentage and nothing happens . Actually I am able to move my cursor but installation no more proceeds further .
