Windows 8.1 Preview Pro On Reboot - Only Cursor

Jul 28, 2013

I just installed a clean install of Windows 8.1 Preview Pro on my laptop (HP DV9000) and I've been coming back and forth to the forum and getting my questions answered by reading all the post about my problems and it worked. I've come across one problem that's frustration to say the least and it's really annoying.

Now that when I reboot my laptop it boots just fine and now the blank black screen comes on with just the cursor present. I've waited and even rebooted a few times and it's still the same.

Explorer Preview Pane Not Showing Preview

Feb 13, 2013

I went from XP to Windows 8 Pro. With XP, a pictures folder allowed the icons to represent a small version of the picture; the filmstrip option was a nice bonus.

With Windows 8, the icon, no matter what size, has a generic look to it--same for all the pictures. I enable Preview Pane, and the same thing happens. No preview of the picture on the preview pane, just a much larger generic icon.

I see screen views on the web of it actually working, but I can't get it to.

Cursor Goes Invisible After Login Windows 8

Jul 4, 2014

When I turn on my computer, I get to the login screen, click in the field and type in my password. When the login completes, my cursor disappears. I can still see it highlighting things I mouse-over, I can click on things and right click and do everything normally except for the fact that I cannot actually see the cursor. If I Ctrl Alt Del, the mouse is again visible, but as soon as I got back to to desktop or start screen, the cursor goes invisible again. I have tried messing with the mouse trails and enlarging the cursor, selecting a different cursor, re installing drivers and system restore however, system restore was not successful.

When I try to do a system restore, it says that windows is missing files but that I may insert my installation disk to recover these files. Upon doing so, it says my disk in invalid. The disk is in perfect condition and is the exact disk I used to install windows in the first place. At this point the mouse is still invisible. I then went to My Computer and ran the disk from there. Out of nowhere, the cursor appears and everything seems to be normal. After turning the computer off and back on however, the cursor again disappears until I run my windows installation disk. I've tried this 3 times now and every time inserting the disk causes the cursor to reappear. My theory (which may be wildly incorrect) is that when running the installation disk, it loads the proper files into the RAM which allows my cursor to be visible. As soon as the computer looses power, those files are gone and thus the cursor is no longer visible. This makes sense, (at least to me) except for the fact that the cursor is visible on both the login screen and in the Ctrl Alt Del screen.

Gateway Windows 8 Cursor / Keyboard Not Working

Jul 12, 2014

I have a Gateway laptop with windows 8...it shut itself down and restored...it has done this before with no issues. The computer loaded and is at the start page where all the apps are listed. I cannot use the cursor...it doesn't show up. When it goes to sleep usually I can hit the space bar and it responds..but nothing...seem the whole key board is frozen. I have tried the function keys for the cursor and nothing...I have taken my mouse from my other computer to try to use it in the lap top and nothing...I have turned the computer off and on..still nothing.

I use my laptop for work and I am frustrated now that I can't get in to it. It seems locked somehow or stuck. When I hit F1 it does open the desktop page and I see the box appear but I can't click on it. The only way to wake the computer up to see the screen I unplug or replug the power cord in. Other than that it seems to go back to sleep.

Windows 8 Won't Boot Up / Black Screen With Cursor

Aug 4, 2014

My laptop has been acting really weird the last couple of weeks. It would crash randomly, and sometimes when I picked it up to put it somewhere else, it crashed too.

Now, I thought this was a problem with Windows 8.1, because it didn't behave like this before with normal Windows 8. So I Refreshed my laptop, and after that it worked again, without crashing.

I left it in sleep mode while I got some sleep too, and when I booted it up this morning, it crashed again.

After that the whole laptop wouldn't boot up, and now the only thing that shows is a cursor on a black screen, and it seems to be stuck in sleep mode, because I can't even turn it off completely manually. So I can't access the BIOS or make it boot up in Safe Mode. What the hell should I do?

Mouse Cursor Appearing During Some Games Windows 8 X64

Feb 28, 2013

Sometimes when I am playing a game in fullscreen with the 360 controller, the mouse cursor will appear on the screen where I last left it. I have to jiggle the mouse and it will go away, but it comes back periodically. In games where I am using a mouse with a special look during the game, I can see flickers of the regular white windows mouse cursor. At first I thought it was just happening in Steam Big Picture Mode, but it is happening in all games.

Tablets :: Cursor Disappear When Switch From One Windows Account To Another

Oct 7, 2013

I've got a problem with my cursor disappearing when I switch from one Windows account to another. The older account got set up this past Christmas when I got the computer and the newer one got set up a couple of weeks ago. I had no problem with either account until today: now, suddenly, I'm finding that when I switch to the newer account, the cursor just flat-out disappears and doesn't come back for love or money. This leaves me unable to do very much of anything except switch back to the older account, where my cursor usually reappears. But as soon as I go back to the newer account, I've lost the cursor and can't make it come back.

For months now, I've been frustrated by the apparent oversensivity of the gesture interpretation on the touchpad. I innocently move a finger along the touchpad to get it from A to B and find that it gets interpreted as a wish to scroll or bring up a context menu or whatever. So yesterday, I disabled all but the single-finger gestures. The problem seems to have begun right after that. After various reboots and other experiments to get my cursor back on the newer account, I finally decided to re-enable the gestures as they had been on the theory that perhaps that was causing my cursor problems.

Any way to keep my cursor from disappearing in the second Windows account? And if you know how to keep the touchpad from reacting to every minute movement and interpreting it is an attempted-gesture when it is just me moving my hand.

The laptop is an ASUS K55N, which was new at 2012.

Windows 8.1 Black / Blank Screen After Login - No Cursor

Jul 31, 2014

I shut down my computer last night. It runs 8.1 and when I shut it down I do not believe it installed updates.i tried to boot it. It boots and after I type in my PIN, shows my desktop for a few seconds. Then, my display will either turn black or a blueish grey. There is no cursor. It does this every reboot now. I can not do anything except reset when it happens.

System info:

Two GTX 760's in SLI
Two Asus monitors

Possible culprits:

1 - I have Actual Multiple Monitors trial installed. The freezing/display blanking seems to happen when the trial time left window shows up, but that may be coincidence.
2 - I heard graphics card driver updates and windows updates can clash in some way and cause a similar issue. From what I've read, a cursor is still on screen and task manager can be opened with CTRL SHIFT ESC. Neither of these work for me.
3- Virus? I have avast so I doubt it.

Windows 8 Screen Freezing With Just Cursor / Login Missing

Apr 1, 2013

I have had Windows 8 since it came out and a little while after I started having issues with it not waking up/randomly freezing. I reinstalled 8 and for a while I have not had any trouble but now I am having issues again.

Basically the computer randomly freezes... but not really. So certain things don't work like opening or closing applications but the cursor can still be moved. Eventually most things won't work but again the cursor is still moveable.

Then again tonight it happened when I got home from work. This is the same problem as before. My computer was left on and locked and when I returned the logon is missing but my cursor is there and moveable.

I have been trying to fix this since the last time it occurred and still cannot find why this is happening. I have the latest drivers, ran scans with Bitdefender and Malwarebytes, checked the event log but nothing shows up from the time I left to the time I got home. I've attached a picture showing the screen frozen with just the cursor and no username/password on the screen.

Windows Explorer Navigation Pane Cursor Position On Open

The Navigation Pane on the left side of Windows Explorer has six major categories from top to bottom as follows: Favorites, SkyDrive, Home Group, This PC, Libraries and Network. When I open Windows Explorer, the cursor is positioned on the Library Category. I would prefer the default cursor position to be on Favorites. I assume that there is no easy way to make this change, at least without editing the Registry somewhere.

Setup Installation :: Black Screen And Cursor After Login - Windows 8.1 Upgrade

Dec 2, 2013

Upgraded to Windows 8.1 Pro from 8 through the Windows Store. Everything seemed to go smoothly. Updated graphics card drivers prior to install of 8.1. Now whenever I start up, I can log in, but then it goes to a black screen with a cursor. Ctrl-Alt-Del will bring up the task manager and from there I can access programs and get on the internet. So after maybe 5 minutes or so after opening a program (usually firefox) the Metro screen randomly loads. None of the store apps worked, though I was able to find a fix for that. Some of them still don't work right though. Is there a better way to upgrade from 8 other than through the store?

Windows 8 - Right Side Toolbar Displaying When Move Cursor In Middle Of Screen

I do not mind the toolbar if it is not so sensitive.

Earlier today my Asus x551m laptop stopped working; the cursor arrow is still visible and movable, but nothing is clickable, ctrl-alt-delete does nothing, and this laptop does not have an easily removable battery that would allow for a hard reset. Also, when I hold the laptop up to my ear, it is completely silent as if it's not even running. It's been like this for almost 3 hours, and I'm hoping that it will be ok once the battery dies and I power it on again.

Windows 8.1 - Application Preview From Taskbar

I'm using UxStyle and this theme: Windows 8.1 White Titlebar Dark theme by x0lis on deviantART . I tried:

Uninstalling UxStyle and themeInstalling 'normal' Nvidia driverDoing sfc /scannow but it didn't find anything particular (something about prncacla.inf, but I don't think that this causes this problem)Scanning system with antivirus (KIS 2014)Turning off and on option 'Enable preview' in Advanced setting -> PerformanceChanging theme to otherSearching about this in Google and this forum, but I didn't find anything similar but nothing worked.

Well I didn't tried uninstalling Update 1, but I would like to avoid that.

How To Preview Files In Windows 8 Like Quicklook In OS X

Dec 25, 2012

I'm thinking of switching to Windows 8 from OS X on my 2009 MacBook Pro. Its the small things in OS X that brought me to Mac in the first place but now it is getting old. Windows 8 looks fresh so I'm thinking of switching to it. One of these small things thats really useful in OS X is quicklook.

When you are in Finder (like Windows Explorer) if you press the space bar any file that you have highlighted gets previewed. This is much quicker than opening whatever app handles that file and it also gives you some basic useful information about the file like size, type, etc.

If I would just like to see what an mp3 is quickly but dont want to import it into iTunes I can just press the space bar and be done with it in seconds instead of opening iTunes, importing it, creating clutter (if I dont want the file in iTunes at all). Likewise instead of opening a photo app I can just quickly look and browse through pictures.

Does Windows 8 have a similar feature that works fast and is useful?

Windows 8 Stuck At Black Screen (with Mouse Cursor) After Deleting Linux Partition

Aug 15, 2014

I have a problem in my dual boot machine. I decided to remove Linux mint 17 from my dual boot with windows 8.
I used easeus partition manager to delete the partitions associated (root, home and swap). Then I got unallocated space just before my windows partition. So I moved my windows partition to the extreme left possible. Then I merged this unallocated space with my second storage partition.

These steps required reboot (specifically the moving of windows partition). When I rebooted my PC I got an error that grub was not found. I realized that I had forgot to fix MBR and load windows boot loader. So I used windows 7 recovery disk (yes windows 7 as I don't have windows8 recovery or installation disk). I got a windows 7 style boot loader instead of windows 8's graphical one which has advanced recovery options built in. But I proceeded. Then eases did its job with the partitions. After a reboot now I am stuck at a black screen after entering my password with a movable mose cursor. I can only press Ctrl+alt+del. Selecting task manager from it does nothing.

Since I don't have windows 8 disks and windows 8 boot loader I am not able to refresh or reset my PC. Neither can I shift restart my PC to get advanced boot options. One more thing to note, that while entering password, I noticed that the lock screen and account pictures have changed to defaults of a freshly installed windows.

Have To Reboot Windows 8.1 Several Times

Aug 21, 2014

Im having a nightmare getting my Windows 8.1 to boot properly. I've Had Windows 8 for over a year now! and I was forced to roll back to Windows 7. But now it's time to get it working properly!

Here is my problem:

My pc boots to a black screen after windows logo (no cursor or anything) and when it does i have to reboot my pc about 5-6 times before it actually boots properly. Now here's the biggest problem--> when I have made a succesfull boot (after rebooting 5-6 times) i have to shutdown my computer and wait 2-3 hours at least, before i can recreate the error again. This makes the problem solving process even more painful.

I've tried just about anything that I could find on the web and weirdly enough, My problem doesn't seem to be quite the same as all the other posts -_- ..

Here's a list of things that I've tried that i can remember:

Updated all drivers to latest versionsReinstalled several timesenabled UEFI boot (and disabled)Booted with only 1 monitor connected (tried VGA and DVI)disabled fast startup

(I didn't connect unessecary hardware or had cd's in the machine. Only a monitor, keyboard and mouse)

I've properly tried more than that, but can't remember it all.

I was told that i should try to connect a monitor using a hdmi cable, because Windows 8 could shoot the signal out of the HDMI port.
