Maintenance :: Possible To Change Order Of Auto Startup Programs - Win 8
Mar 5, 2014
I'd like to change the order in which certain programs in my startup folder load. I don't need to know how to add or remove programs from the startup folder, and I'm not talking about security or system programs. I'm talking about some programs I've added to my computer, which I use all the time in my research work, and I just want them to wind up in a different order on my taskbar for ease in switching back & forth, making notes, etc.

My programs that has yellow-blue shield like this fail to autostart at log-on or windows startup. I tried many ways: registry, put their shortcuts in startup folder, changed gpedit.msc so that they start on log-on... none of them works. This problem seems to affect only programs with that yellow-blue shield (whatever its name is).

In Task Manager-Startup I have several programs (Adobe stuff) that I want out of there, I know I can just disable them but I want them removed. They used to be in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun or HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun but in Windows 8 they aren't. I can view the file locations but can't figure out what's causing them to startup when Windows starts.

I'm using an Asus N550JV running Windows 8.1.
Recently, whenever I restart my computer or shutdown->startup, I notice that startup programs (e.g the Logitech Application for my mouse, Google Drive sync etc) do not run unless I sign out and sign back in. I can constantly replicate this.
I'm not sure if this has to do with me disabling hibernation (I did this on day one of getting my notebook).
The problem with this situation is that I disable my touchpad because I have a wireless mouse, but on occasions where I don't have a mouse available, I can press the Asus instant-on button and I have it set to toggle the touchpad on/off function. Because the startup services aren't loading, I'm unable to use that button now and I'm stuck using my keyboard to try to manually turn it on.

So I've been experiencing this pretty much from the first day after installing Windows 8.1.
It goes as follows:
1. I power on the PC (or restart), windows boots up, I put in the password and it is fairly quick to enter destkop mode.
2. Now this is when my issue occurs, the startup programs may take up to 2 minutes to start load.
This is not because my computer is slow or anything like that, it almost seems like there is a set delay and only then my programs are allowed to start loading. Once they start loading, it only takes couple of seconds. The problem is, they won't start - only after I hang in destkop for about a minute or two.

Here are some of my system specs:
Dell Inspiron 17R 5721
OS Name Microsoft Windows 8
Version 6.2.9200 Build 9200
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3517U CPU @ 1.90GHz, 2401 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 4 Logical
BIOS Version/Date Dell Inc. A03, 10/24/2012
SMBIOS Version 2.7
Embedded Controller Version 1.01
BIOS Mode UEFI
Secure Boot State On
Boot Device DeviceHarddiskVolume1
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 8.00 G
As so many others have written, I can't change the boot-up order which means at this time, I can only boot from the hard disk.
I am hopeful that it is my ignorance that prevents me from accessing and changing the order, and that some good hearted soul will set my down the right path.

In other verisons of windows the tiles on the taskbar would be in order from time. If i opened Google Chrome, and then Adobe, and then another Google Chrome instance it would look that way. Now however it "groups" the two Google Chrome ones near other, and the Adobe one on the left. Anyway to change that?

When I access my UEFI during startup, the Boot Priority section is either empty or shows unrelated drives attached. I can select the drive from which to boot by clicking on the Boot Menu, then clicking on the drive desired.
I purchased a new Intel SSD and installed it as the "C" and "D" drives and was happily booting from that SSD until I added new HDDs to my system. I now have four HDDs plus the SSD. One of those HDDs still contains the original Root C bootup and Windows 8 system on it. I frequently now find the system, reason unknown, may choose to boot from the HDD rather than the SSD.
I cannot find the method for directing the UEFI bootup menu/priority steps... my goal is to have the computer boot from the SSD, which if it were to fail, then would secondarily boot from the HDD original Root C.
The computer arbitrarily changes the SSD from drive designation "C:" to "J:" and the HDD to "C:"... how to specify the SSD as the "C:" unless it fails or is removed? the computer system info:

I have win 8.1 pro x64. I want to know if I can change the display order of disks icons manually. Usually the c drive appears first (from left to right), second cdrom icon and next the external drives. Can I change that with drag and drop? (I remember that I can do it in Vista).

Although I use it mainly in desktop mode, I have had few issues with Windows 8.1 except for file explorer - it seems they've adopted the Apple approach of 'You must have it the way we want you to have it' rather than letting users configure it themselves...
Specifically,
1. I can't find how to force it to create new explorer windows at the size I want - they are always too small so I have to change each one - is there a way to do this?
2. I've managed to get it to display on opening: file/date modified/type/size in the 'details' view which is my prefered opening view, but I then have to click 'date modified' column to bring the latest up to the top - is there any way to force it to do that on opening?
3. In the 'save' box Windows now focuses on 'This PC' rather than 'Favourites', so I invariably have to scroll up to the top to see my Favourites, which includes 'Recent places' which is something I use probably 90% of the time - most of my saves and file openings are sometime I was recently working on. Is their any way to change this?

Last night I was playing League of Legends when I got a BSoD. I didn't think much of it, and just waited for my computer to restart. However, as it restarted, I saw that it was auto repairing and then diagnosing. After that it said auto repair failed, giving me the directory c:windowssystem32logfilessrtsrttrail.txt. I tried system refresh, which shoot me back system refresh failed straight away. The same happens with system restart, but it takes much longer for it to say the restart failed. I have no system restore points to choose from and I have no recovery disks as Windows 8 came preinstalled on the computer. I've troubledshooted for hours and come to opening SrtTrail.txt with the command prompt. It says:
Root cause found: The operating system version is incompatible with Startup Repair.

My Dell Inspiron 660 is 2 months old. It came with Windows 8 preinstalled. My problem: I am trying to change the boot order so I can boot from CD ROM as a first option. I have tried using the "F" keys on boot, but it just ignores me and goes on to boot up. I have also tried the "Advanced Options > UEFI Firmware Settings" in "Change PC Settings" and got the same results. I spent some time on the phone with a Dell tech. After trying all the things I had already tried, he and his supervisor decided I must have a bad Motherboard. Does this sound right? Is there any way to repair this problem?

.I have an HP Pavilion Slimline PC desktop. It does not allow me to boot from CD/DVD drive or USB connection. Windows 8.1. I wish to be able to use the boot options cd/dvd and all the USB options. I can't use any of the options. I list bios setup options and suggestions given to me from articles but I'm not sure I'm afraid of error. I don't have that much experience in bios setup.
Articles have said in BIOS setup Security is to be disabled. I suppose Legacy remains disabled(?). It is suggested that I shutdown and reboot.
BIOS Setup > Storage > Boot Order has this list:
UEFI Boot Sources
Windows Boot Manager
USB Floppy/CD[code]....
At bottom of this Boot Order Window are the options: F5=disable Enter=drag F10=accept ESC=cancel
Windows Boot Manager at the the top stops all other options.beneath it. How does that 'drag' work. Don'tr I have to move 'Windows Boot Manager' to the bottom?
And move ATAPI CD/DVD drive to the top? of this UEFI boot sources list?
Is it true that if there is an error in the BIOS Boot Setup and Windows 8.1 does not boot, the BIOS Setup will come up instead so one can do a fix?

I've previously set my Windows 8 machine to auto logon without entering my password.
But since then, I've changed the password for the account via hotmail, and now, whenever I turn on my machine it fails to logon with an error that my password is incorrect.
How do I change the stored password to my new password so that it will auto logon again?

Just found out that when I go to Startup items from Task manager and msconfig, Startup is not populated at all. All the items set to start are working and visible, just no listing in Startup for any. System scan including Dism comes up clean as a whistle and so is malware detection. Haven't checked since newest updates but can's see a reason for them to do only that.

I have Peerblock to start up with the computer (it has an icon set inside the Startup folder by me), yet that program never runs; I have to click that listing inside the Startup folder manually for it to start. I have two other programs in there to start with the computer, and the both run the way they're supposed to. Why is this program procrastinating to start up with the computer?

For example it starts SpeedFan without any problem, and with same settings, or even in the same Task, if I add for example other .exe software like FTP server software Gene6 FTP Server it simply doesn't start for any reason and nothing happens and it has to be started manually by mouse-clicking on .exe each time computer is booted up.
On Last Run Result column it says 0x800702E4. And it gives various 0x results for various programs that don't run.
Also simply dragging shortcuts to Startup folder don't work either. But like I said, not all .exe programs, some work and some don't, just like 50/50 I simply don't get it.
I use Comodo Antivirus and ZoneAlarm firewall, but all those programs I need has 100% permissions granted.

I'm trying to boot Windows 8.1 from DVD (for Nero backitup.) . I can get to the advanced settings option and even to the UEFI option. Once I get tothe UEFI restart the computer shuts down and then just sits there - power light on - but nothing on the screen. The screen stays asleep(?) if that is what you would call it.
I'm on an Acer Aspire AT3-605_ES20 desktop. They had an instruction to hit "delete" at the Aspire logo during boot. But I don't get an Aspire logo - it just starts up to the Windows log in screen. I turned off "fast startup". How I can change my boot order so I can boot from DVD?

i'm running Windows 8 Home Premium.I'd like to increase my startup speeds, I already disabled as much as I can in Task Manager, msconfig, etc.In the Task Scheduler, it shows Metro Apps are taking CPU time at startup though. After much searching on the topic, I find very little about how to disable the Metro Apps from starting up. The main one I want to disable is "Mail, Calendar, People, and Messaging". I do not want to uninstall them, I just do not want them to do anything until I open them. It takes over 2 minutes of CPU time at startup for that one Metro App to fully load, and most of the time I never use it.
I have tried going into the Permissions of the App, and I disabled all of its Permissions to run in background of lock screen and everything. Still, it loads in Task Manager and takes CPU time.

I am trying to change the image on the startup screen (the blue screen with a graphic of a tower on it)of my Inspiron 15 using windows 8. I have looked at the personalisation control panel, but it only offers me options to change themes, not the startup picture. My friend has a picture of honeycombe that came with system 8 as his startup screen, but he is away so I cannot ask him how he did it.

I would like to add a partition to a drive having the following partitions:
Number Partition Size 1 Windows RE 499 MB 2 EFI System 300 MB 3 MSR 128 MB 4 C: 216 GB 5 Windows RE 450 MB 6 Samsung Image 19 GB 7 Samsung Recovery 1 GB
This should be easy to do with MiniTool Partition Wizard. In essence, resize "C:", add the partition in the unallocated space, assign the drive letter "D" to the new partition, and format it to NTFS.
You will notice that the drive has two Windows RE partitions. This is because I updated to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 through the Microsoft Store.

I have set Defender to do a quick scan in task scheduler for 1 AM. Auto Maintenance is set for 3 AM. I got up this morning to check Defender to verify the newly created quick scan and it was successful but stated it ran at 3 AM. Since I have allowed system to 'wake up' from sleep to do the quick scan, I am afraid the laptop is being awakened at both 1 AM by task scheduler and 3 AM by Auto Maintenance.
It runs as part of Automatic Maintenance, which IIRC runs daily when your computer is idle.

Windows 8.1 [update] 64bit
HP G62293sa
Intel i5 2.5GHz
6GB Ram
I really need a solution to permanently disable auto maintenance in 8.1.
I've tried everything in task scheduler. I've disabled 'Idle Maintenance' & 'Regular Maintenance' ... and I was finally able to find a way to disable 'Maintenance Configurator'. However, the 'custom triggers' for the latter are impossible to disable as is the 'daily trigger' which keeps re-enabling itself.
The auto maintenance is a law unto itself. It doesn't run when the system is idle. It runs whenever it feels like it ... which is usually when I'm browsing, streaming etc. I've put up with this for long enough. There has to be a permanent solution.

I am primarily a "slightly competent" linux user, I dislike UEFI, Win 8 and M$ (in that order, most of the time).
Ok, that's me .
New laptop, Windows 8 64bit pre-installed.
Is there any way to stop Win 8 automatically creating restore points, but still allow manual creation of points? Or at least "protect" important restore points.
I recently decided to restore a manual point to find Win 8 has deleted all of my points and replaced with "others". I realize I could increase the storage area, but I don't want that, as I'm always short of disc space.

I got 3 'file not found' entries in my Autoruns report (see below).
Having removed filters from the report, it looks like the files are there, but not where they are expected to be (am I correct with this interpretation?).
So should I be doing something like moving them to where they should be, or deleting the 'file not found' entries, or should I just leave well alone.
