Oct 18, 2013I am trying to change the image on the startup screen (the blue screen with a graphic of a tower on it)of my Inspiron 15 using windows 8. I have looked at the personalisation control panel, but it only offers me options to change themes, not the startup picture. My friend has a picture of honeycombe that came with system 8 as his startup screen, but he is away so I cannot ask him how he did it.

Can't Change User Account Picture
Oct 1, 2012this is a known issue and may users have been facing exactly the same problem with Windows 8 (source: Google)
Problem: I can't change my User Account picture. Whenever I click on the "Browse" button, nothing happens. Same goes for whenever I try to change the Lock Screen.
I read somewhere CCleaner removes some essential shortcuts which can prevent that, but I don't see that being the case coz I restored all the icons and even ran "sfc /scannow" just to be sure of that.

Feb 28, 2014My Windows 8.1 machine has only one interactive account - the built-in "administrator" account. It is just an internal file- and media-server without a monitor, which is accessed exclusively through Remote Desktop.
I would like to change the "user picture" associated with that built-in admin account. Trying to do it the "usual" way - through Control Panel -> User Accounts - does not work. Apparently, user picture selection is handled by a Metro app. And Metro apps are not launchable from the built-in admin.
Most likely there are workarounds. I can try using that hack that enables Metro apps under the built-in admin. Or I can add another interactive admin account and try changing the picture of the built-in admin from that other admin. I don't know whether any of these will work, I haven't tried yet.
But is there a more straightforward way to set the user picture for an account? Like copy the picture file to some folder or something like that?

Ok, I'm using the Modern Skype app and I want to change my picture.
So I click on my user pic and I am taken to My Pictures folder.
But I don't wanna be there, so I "Go Up" to the Users Folder and click/open Play. But I do not see App Data listed.
What I would like to do is browse to this specific folder without leaving the Modern Skype app.
c:UsersPlayAppDataRoamingSkypePictures
Why? Because that is where the picture I wish to use is located. I am well aware that I could drop out of the Modern interface and copy/move the file from there to the My Pictures folder.
8.1 - Welcome Screen (Lock Screen Picture) Not Showing On Restart
Jul 10, 2014Every time I Restart my Laptop, the Lock Screen does not show the Welcome Screen and skips directly to the User Account login screen. Actually, it shows a darkish blue screen for a couple of seconds and then jumps to the user account login.
When I use the logout function or the shutdown (and I power it back on) everything works normally.
I have ran SFC / Scannow in windows (8.1 by the way).

Customize Windows 8 User Account Picture / Lock Screen When Unactivated
Aug 22, 2012I installed Windows 8 early to setup everything up so when it comes out in October I can just buy it and activate it. Then I got tired of not being able to customize anything so I found where Windows stores various images and here they are.
Note: After each one you may have to restart explorer.exe (cmd> tskill explorer)
Tools:Take Ownership registry edit- [URL] ....
User Account Picture:
-Go to C: Drive
-In the ribbon go to "View" Tab and choose "Options"> In the new windows go to "View"> choose to Show Hidden files
-Back in the explorer go to "ProgramData" since it is not hidden anymore
-Then Microsoft> then User Account Pictures
-The images you want to change are user.bmp, user.png, user-40.png, user-200.png (You may not see the .png or .bmp)
Now in Photoshop (or any other image editing software) make 4 images of the image you want using these settings:
user.bmp= .bmp, 480x480
user.png= .png, 480x480
user-40.png- .png, 40x40
user-200.png- .png, 200x200

Lock Screen:
This took me a while as it was harder then I thought, but here is a simplified version of what I did.
1. Download and install the takeown script to registry (This will save you a lot of time and trouble)
2. Go to "C:WindowsWebScreen" and replace img100.jpg with the image you want (make sure you have the same name)
3)Go to "C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindows" and right click the "SystemData" folder and choose "Take Ownership" now you can enter the folder by pressing continue
4) Now go to S-1-5-18>ReadOnly>LockScreen_Z and replace the image with the same image you replaced in step 2, but remember to change your images file name to the one of the image your replacing. For example in step 2 it was called "img100" and this one the same image is now called "LockScreen___1920_1080" for me.
5) Now for the last one is in "C:WindowsWinSxS"
6) You will see tons of folders just use the search and search for 'img100" and when you find the correct image open the folder (right click>open file location) and replace img100 with your lockscreen image (once again make sure you keep the same file name so make sure your new lock screen says img100)
It seems like a lot to change the lock screen, but I had to change all of them to change that one setting

1) Hold windows key and press R (win+R)
2) Paste "c:windowssystem32oobemsoobe.exe" -without quotes
3) Wait a second for it to popup and select your color
4) Alt+tab out or just press ctrl+shift+esc to bring up task manager
5) Kill msoobe.exe (it may be under Background Processes)
6) Restart explorer (cmd (or win+r)> tskill explorer)
Programs to do these process for you:I personally prefer to do manual edits, but I know some people do not or have a harder time so here are two programs I found that will change account picture and start screen. Then as a bonus it will also remove the activate water marks.

Note: It did change the color (a simple registry edit), but it failed to change the start screen for me.

Feb 25, 2014I cannot get the touch keyboard or picture password to come up consistently at logon screen. I had to go to services to make the touch-service work with desktop and logon (it was unchecked). Now, at fresh start-up or restart I can get the keyboard by touch but will not get it again if I log off and log back on. And under no conditions do I get the picture password option although I have a picture set up for it.

Won't Show Screen At Startup?
Nov 10, 2012I power my computer on and seems to startup fine and gets to the loading screen for windows. Then when its get to the screen where its suppose to sow the lock screen its just black. I can here the windows startup sound and can see my mouse and move it around but can't do anything. I have been trying to find a solution for the past couple days but can't get to much due to time restrictions. Deployed right now so I'm kinda limited on what resources I can use and instead of dicking around with this problem id just use my time to skype family and friends. I usually like to solve to computer problem myself for the know how but don't have the time.

Jan 20, 2014I installed Windows 8 over the weekend. I didn't want to but my parents have it and they keep harassing me to "fix" their computer so that it acts like Windows Vista, so I needed to know more about Windows 8. When Windows 8 was installed I updated to 8.1 and installed Office 2010. Office asked for a reboot so I rebooted and haven't been able to get into Windows since.
The computer boots to a black screen that flickers once in a while. I can see my mouse pointer on the screen when I move the mouse. I'm having trouble accessing Safe Mode. I did get a diagnostic tool to come up before Windows booted and I ran a full diagnostics on my computer. When the diagnostics were completed it dumped me into the boot options menu. I tried to let Windows refresh itself which did not work. I also did a System Restore which did not work.
I have unplugged all usb and serial cables from the computer to make sure that it wasn't an external hard drive or printer causing my problem.
I downloaded Windows 8 so I don't have a CD to boot from. My computer doesn't have a CD drive. My plan is to keep trying to boot into Safe Mode but once I am back in I don't know what I am going to do. I already did a system restore. I could try to uninstall Office but it is more likely that the 8.1 update is my biggest problem. I'm sure that there is a way to undo the 8.1 update.
I was just wondering if there is any new information out there. It would be nice if Microsoft had a fix for this problem but I can't find it on their website.

Jul 5, 2014Tried to follow instructions I was led to on YouTube to delete old email showing where I sign in with Windows 8.1 Pro Update.
Thought I'd cracked it as the old email has now disappeared from everywhere else I used it to sign in.
Signed back into Windows and.................... there it was again.
I was asked did I want to delete signing in with Windows and sign in locally. Now I'm not smart, but I didn't like the sound of that so cancelled that option.
Black Screen On Windows 8.1 Startup
Feb 19, 2014always it happens that on the startup of windows 8.1 (and also when it was installed windows 8 before the windows 8.1 upgrade) after the republic of gamers logo and before the appearance of the lock screen, the monitor remains completely black for 5 minutes about (after that appears the lock screen and windows works again well). Usually Windows starts itself in 10 seconds about. During the black screen commands don't works. Can be the use of cc cleaner, that cleaning temporary files, creates this problem? I tried to reinstall the last version of the Nvidia display drivers but nothing changed. I took away all those unuseful programs from the windows startup.

I am setting up a alienate PC and I would like to copy the start page (metro) that I have set to an additional user, I did copy my appsfolder.itemdata-ms to C:usermicrosoft....appsfolder.itemdata-ms but I still do not get the same layout or apps as mine. What I am trying is to have the same layout and apps for all users without having to re-arrange each user start screen.

Apr 17, 2014On startup, all I get is a blank white screen. I can't see anything. But, I can plug in a monitor and do everything else just fine.
I tried twiddling the drivers, but maybe I did it wrong or overlooked the right one(s). I tried a system restore, but that threw an error on restart.
I even dove in with my screwdriver to make sure no plugs got knocked loose (don't worry, warranties were long voided).

Long Black Screen During Startup (no Cursor)
Aug 12, 2013I recently upgraded my dell 1645 from windows 7 to 8.
I installed most of the drivers from the dell website even though they were meants for win 7. For some of them I installed drivers directly from the device manufacturers website.
When the computer first starts up it passes the windows logo, and then a black screen is shown (no cursor) for a good 5 minutes. Then it advances to the login (seatle cartoon image) and everything works perfectly.
I had another issue before that I think I solved which was the intel rapid storage technology. Whenever the computer would go to sleep I got a windows BSOD saying driver_irql_less_than_or_equal. But after installing the newest intel rapid storage drivers sleep seams to work perfectly.
The drivers I installed from the manufacturers that arent on the official 1645 driver page:
- ati radeon drivers from ati
- synaptics drivers
- bluetooth 380 drivers, supposed to be 370 I believe but it seems to only be 380 available which people say works.
I also tried running the intel chipset automatic check, which said I was on the latest.
Trapped With Back Screen On Windows 8.1 Startup
Jan 11, 2014I have a Dell Inspiron 7572. I just upgraded to Windows 8.1 and followed some instructions on upgrading the catalyst video driver. I downloaded this and installed and it asked me to restart. However all I get now is a black screen. If I try moving the mouse it appears for a couple of seconds then disappears. I can't find any way to boot into safe mode as I can get anything up on screen. I imagine uninstalling the display driver will fix the issue but I can't work out anyway to get into windows to do it.

Jul 10, 2014I've had my windows 8 desktop for over 2 years now and I tried to log in to the administrator account.
But when I entered the correct password into it. The Startup screen opens but only shows 2 apps (Windows Store and Photos) and continuously blinks. I would post a screen shot,but it blinks too fast preventing the command. It continuously flashes from the incomplete Startup screen to a black blank screen back to the Startup screen.
I dont have the dump files from the SF diagnostic tool as this problem prevents me from clicking or entering any of the apps.
I know for sure that this is only an isolated problem with the administrator account as when I log into other admin and standard user accounts and the guest account, everything still works perfectly fine.
I scanned for viruses and found nothing with Norton 360 full system scan.
Im not sure when this started to occur as I haven't used the account for over a year.
I just want to know if I would be able to fix this problem or should I just delete this admin account and then create another admin account?
Windows 8 Startup - Right Click Slow / Blank Screen
Nov 1, 2012Tonight I upgraded from Windows 7 to 8 and everything went fine. I noticed that the right click was very slow and found out that it was my display drivers that were at fault so I upgraded them also. I then had to reboot and thats where my problems started. Not when I startup everything seems to go okay and I think that it is starting fully but I have a blank screen. I attempted to enter safe mode but was unsuccessful F8, Shift F8 and a combination of both.
