I'm trying to reinstall a driver for my printer but I cannot locate the file to run.
I clicked on the download command at the HP website and my computer gave me a screen asking if I wanted to save the file (not run but save). I clicked save and the download completed and apparently the file has been saved but I don't know how to get to it in order to run it. Where is it?
I am running Win 8.1 x 64 ... After downloading the iso file for Win 8.1, what can I expect to see?
It is downloading and will be done in 2 hours. Can I just burn it to dvd which I want or will I have to go through installation steps?
The reason I ask is because I have a product key for 8 but not 8.1. I read it can be done with a Win 8 prod key but also read that an 8.1 key is needed.
Although I use it mainly in desktop mode, I have had few issues with Windows 8.1 except for file explorer - it seems they've adopted the Apple approach of 'You must have it the way we want you to have it' rather than letting users configure it themselves...
Specifically,
1. I can't find how to force it to create new explorer windows at the size I want - they are always too small so I have to change each one - is there a way to do this?
2. I've managed to get it to display on opening: file/date modified/type/size in the 'details' view which is my prefered opening view, but I then have to click 'date modified' column to bring the latest up to the top - is there any way to force it to do that on opening?
3. In the 'save' box Windows now focuses on 'This PC' rather than 'Favourites', so I invariably have to scroll up to the top to see my Favourites, which includes 'Recent places' which is something I use probably 90% of the time - most of my saves and file openings are sometime I was recently working on. Is their any way to change this?
I've just upgraded from win8 to win 8.1 using the windows update (store), my questions are :
1. Can the ISO file that was automatically downloaded by the system during windows 8 upgrade to 8.1 be saved or backed up? the download was about 2.6 GB.
2. If so can the backed up file be used to do a "clean install" in future on the same machine?
I built a new computer, and now have both a SSD and HDD setup. My intention was to have the SSD be only for Windows and use the HDD for everything else. I feel like that everything I download is going to the SDD and I am not getting any prompts for where to install applications.
For example, I just installed Office and was planning to install it on the HDD. I checked the SSD, and sure enough, there is a folder for Office. On a related note, the install setup everything for Office including OneDrive for Business. I don't need OneDrive for Business. Should there have been a prompt to select what Office applications I wanted to install?
Am getting a few persistent problems with this OS on the laptop like dropping saved password ID's etc and changing the format of the forum window and the latest is trying to download the latest Adobe Reader update it keeps asking me to open it with something.
Whatever happened to the good old run or save why do I have to open it with something. If the problems keep happening I am going back to my old 7 system despite 8.1 being faster etc.
I have windows 8.1, which is not allowing me to save files any files except to the desktop, my documents, downloads, pictures, music, and video!
Do other windows 8.1 users have this issue to where files are not able to be saved either?
I think I found the culprit in the security tab about preventing files from be saved
Not matter how many times I let Explorer build the thumbnails, after any reboot or shutdown/power-on the thumbnails get erased and I have to rebuild them again. It happens with all images and videos the same.
IMO, Windows 8 is definitely cool, but it has some rough edges that should've been ironed out before prime time.
I bought a Asus ROG with Windows 8 pre installed. I was making a logo with pixlr and saving it to my desktop when I noticed the only save option was "data file". So I saved it. I cant open it or naturally upload it to my website like I could with seven. Why is it saving with the additional suffix .dat example - logo.png.dat or logo.jpg.dat? Saving it to my desktop and trying to open it suggests I look for apps to open it...really!

So I have both Windows 7 and 8 on my machine and am currently primarily using 8. I save all of my work and files to my 8 partition C: whenever I choose the location, but for applications/programs that automatically save to a library and where I can't choose the location, those programs always save it to my Windows 7 partition E:.
For example, using Windows key + PrtSc takes a screenshot of your screen and saves it to your pictures library. However, the picture gets saved to E:Users[username]Pictures instead of C:Users[username]Pictures. I guess it thinks my main library is still on the 7 partition instead of the 8 partition. The same things happens with games that I play where the save files are automatically saved in the My Games folder in My Documents. The save files are saved in the E: partition documents library instead of C: partition documents library.
Basically, I don't know where I'd go or what setting I'd change to fix this behavior. My default OS is set to Windows 8 in msconfig and all of my games are installed on my C drive, so I don't know why they would save to my E drive. Since the screenshot command uses the same behavior, I'm guessing there's a setting somewhere that's making my Windows 7 library the default.
My old vista laptop died so I upgraded to a new laptop pre-loaded with 8.1. I tried to load some files including photos from my Seagate hard drive but I get a message to the effect that they are not supported. How can I download the other files?
View 2 Replies View RelatedBought a new Acer all-in-one and immediately upgraded it to 8.1 via a 3GB DL. Went perfectly.
Cleverly (I thought) I saved the update files should I ever need to do the update again.
Then the Acer had a hardware problem so I returned it to Best Buy for a replacement.
Now, I try to apply the 8.1 upgrade files that I previously saved from the store DL to the replaced computer.
It asks for a key, but won't accept either the one from the new replaced machine, nor the one that I returned.
Are these licenses now tied to an individual computer, via a unique code embedded in the BIOS or some such??
I really don't want to do the DL again, since my bandwidth is metered and 3GB takes a good percentage of my total monthly quota.
I recently switched from a local account to a MS account & noticed that it brought in my saved favorites (from the last time I had a MS acct using Win 8), which caused some duplicates.
While I was going thru & deleting the duplicates, I accidently deleted some of my favorites. What I am trying to do is see if there is a way to look at the IE favorites saved to my MS account & then re add the missing ones back really quick.
So i am going to Reset my PC cause of different issues, and i want to export my Presets i made in Realtek HD Audio Manager, the one you make in the Equalizer and then save. I want to know, where are these save, so i can take them over to a USB drive and after the PC is reseted, i only put them back there, and load them into the Audio Manager.

Is It possible to pin actual saved files to the Start Menu like Word documents and Excel spreadsheets (or anything else for that matter) as well as programs. I use this on my Windows 8 at work.
For example my Microsoft Excel file shortcut will be like follows:
Target: "C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice15EXCEL.EXE" "D:UsersUser NameYour File Name.xlsx"
Start in: "C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice15"
I usually set the Start In to the MS Office Folder or the File location folder, it doesn't seem to affect it either way. I created a folder in my username called Shortcuts and put all of them in there. Because Windows sees this as an executable program it will allow you to right click it and to pin it to the Start Menu even though it actually starts the saved file you need. I use this for my Access database files too. As long as you set the correct path to the file name, it works every time. You can name the shortcut whatever name you need as well.
Anyway, I thought I'd share it since it makes a great time saver being able to launch your most frequently used files straight from the Start Menu in Windows 8 rather than having to launch the program and then trying to open the saved file.
Windows 8 I've been trying to stop is when I download audio it automatically launches the file, it was launching audio files in the Windows 8 audio player but I managed to get that changed to default to VLC but it still launches it automatically, how can I stop this behaviour?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI had a Windows 8 machine & upgraded to 8.1 before I found out all the sneaky underhanded sleazy things Microsoft did. In particular pulling the useful (and in my case necessary) 'Easy Transfer' tool that was *on my machine* in Windows 8 and replacing it with a something completely useless to me and calling the same thing which it isn't.
So I'm wondering if the Windows 8 Easy Transfer is available for download somewhere and hoping it will work under Windows 8.1.
It doesn't look like the Windows 8.1 upgrade keeps any of the Windows 8 stuff in case you change your mind and want to go back, which is starting to look like a really good idea.
It's a brand-name pre-installed thing so no Widows 8 media, just a recovery partition so I can return the machine to factory with Windows 8 or even go to an OEM Windows 7 (alas no drivers). Rather odious at this point, but may be my only option.
Unless maybe there's a way to pull the Win 8 files from what's on the recovery partition (*.swm files) .
So I've just downloaded windows 8.1 through store and it won't install because i think the file is corrupted. When i retry downloading it always want to use that corrupted file. Where can i find the 8.1 data and delete it?

I know windows apps are saved in Programs file(hidden ) and once you get ownership permission sorted you can go to reg edit and also take ownership and change the location to another place. say from c:programfiles to D:my new location.. but i don't know how to activate and retrieve the apps once a new account is created

As so many others have written, I can't change the boot-up order which means at this time, I can only boot from the hard disk.
I am hopeful that it is my ignorance that prevents me from accessing and changing the order, and that some good hearted soul will set my down the right path.
I have many folders (with a couple of thousand files) configured to display sorted by date. When using software and needing to open a file from within the program, it opens what looks like an Explorer window. However, the sort order is always by name initially and it takes a minute or so to suddenly display in the correct sort order as specified in Windows itself.
If I repeat this a few minutes later it goes through the routine all over again!
Running explorer from Windows 8 itself is no problem, it remembers the sort order. Is there a way to make third party software that calls up an explorer window do the same please?
Incidentally having given up on the truly slow and clumsy windows search function, I installed Search Everything and it is instant and reliable. Why can't Microsoft Search be like that?
Is there a way to get the 'Settings' in alphabetic order. The way they are on my 521 is difficult because you have them in random order and it is difficult to find things.

If i opened Google Chrome, and then Adobe, and then another Google Chrome instance it would look that way. Now however it "groups" the two Google Chrome ones near other, and the Adobe one on the left. Anyway to change that?
