Sep 15, 2014I run Windows in the following configuration:
I have an SSD and a normal HDD. The Windows system itself runs on the SSD for faster boot-up, and all my user data is stored on the HDD. I recently installed Linux as a dual boot option, but due to issues with UEFI and Legacy BIOS settings, I decided to uninstall my Linux. My Linux was similarly configured, with /boot residing on the SSD and the rest of it residing on an ext4-formatted partition on my HDD.
I uninstalled Linux using the boot-repair livedisc, and I can boot just fine into Windows 8.1. However, now my Windows Data partition on the HDD cannot be accessed. On boot, it doesn't even mount, and links to my Downloads or Documents folders are broken.
The Disk Management tool lists the Data partition as an EFI System Partition, when it was previously just a normal Primary NTFS partition. GParted detects the partition as an NTFS one. DiskPart also indicates the partition is hidden. Mounting the partition works fine using DiskPart but I cannot access it as it throws an access denied error, and says I do not have permission to access the drive. I have tried changing the security options in the security tab to give me full control, but to no avail. I can use CMD to access it though, and view things, but I cannot seem to move or copy data out of it. I have tried using the convert utility in CMD to convert the EFI partition to NTFS (EFI is FAT32, IIRC) but it says that the partition is already NTFS.
How can I fix this or at least enter the partition and backup my data before performing a format and restore? What data should I provide to get proper support?

Feb 9, 2014After 5 years of use, my college laptop (Windows Vista) finally gave up on me a couple of months ago. Each time at start up, it would automatically go to the blue screen of death and never get past that point. I wound up getting a new laptop operating on windows 8, and now I'm attempting to recover some of my files from the old hard drive. After a little reading, I discovered that you can pull the old drive, connect it to another computer via a USB cable, and attempt to recover the data on the drive. So I ran down to the local best buy and picked up an Apricorn SATA Wire. Here's the problem. Every time I hook the hard drive up to the computer via the USB wire, my computer instantly goes to a blue screen and goes into a cycle of restarting itself over and over. Does this mean that my old hard drive is just too far gone to recover, or is there another method that I can try?

Jan 19, 2014I have a client running Windows 8.1. The original problem was that he could not install an HP 6700 printer, the installer package failed every time. I got the same error; I attempted to update all his drivers and noticed that all the installers failed. I then attempted to install it manually and I get a failure: Windows found drivers software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it. The data is invalid. I receive the same error if I try to install any driver the same way. Laptop is an Acer Aspire One running 8.1, there were no recovery discs made and all recovery options fail. Not sure where to go with this.

A little investigating using the command prompt from that disk revealed my system and data partitions had no drive letter assigned to them. Jul 26, 2014I used four drives in my hard-disk. I needed to extend volume for my C drive. So using the Disk management utility I was trying to shrink the drive F (as it was very next to C, as in Disk management). But something happen accidental here. I found that two of my drives E & F went missing after the operation. Also my laptop suddenly restarted (after perform a checking task). I am not sure how this happened and looking for a way to recover the lost partitions as they are seen still exist, including the data.
I was only trying to shrink around 283 mb of volume from a drive with 138 gb, as an experiment basis, to see it work. On that process the drives were lost and those are not shown into my windows now. Using a software EaseUS Partition Master, I could still see the drives still exist as they contain the data as used spaces, and also show the unallocated space of 283 mb but I am not finding a way how could I recover my partition without affecting the data.
Deleting Or Changing Drive Letter On External Data Result In Data Loss?
Dec 6, 2013I am trying to get my external hard drives setup from a freshly rebooted installed computer. I recently placed an external hard drive with all my back up files on my computer, but this drive is not going to be my main drive. I have two others I will be using as a main hdd and a backup drive that are brand new.
So, the question is, if I were to use a utility like the Windows 8.1 disk management feature to either delete the drive letter or even change it to another one, will that mess up the external hard drive or even lose data? Because until I transfer my files to my backup disk I am afraid of losing my only copy of my files.

Mar 15, 2013Ever since I installed Windows -8 Pro ( 64 bit ) on my MultiMonitor system, all my screens go black with following error message.
" AMD Drivers stopped Responding & has Recovered"
It happens so many times an hour that I had to stop usingWindows -8 completely. Even the worst thing is that if I have more than one harddrive & driver crashes, then on next reboot my system automatically startsdisk checking which takes hours for a 3.0 GB slave HDD. I never had thisproblem with Windows -7 using the same system.

OKAY.. so I had Windows 7 64 bit installed for a while, then i decided to make the jump to Windows 8.1 when i found it on sale online.
I downloaded Windows 8.1 64 bit to a USB boot drive, but saved that for later and installed Windows 8.1 from the desktop as an "Upgrade" from my current system.
Then after installing all drivers and setting up my Windows Profile everything was perfect no issues, gaming was awesome, overall the system was great as it should. BUT one day (about 3 weeks after installation) i was playing League of Legends and my screen went black mid game. I reset the computer and from there on out I have been getting the black screen and have been unable to install the Latest and/or previous Nvidia Geforce Drivers(337.50) and every time I've had to Reboot in Safe Mode to uninstall the current drivers and or disable the "Video Adapter" to be able to access the desktop.
1st method: I tried everything from preventing Windows Update to install anything, and then downloading GeForce Drivers going into safe mode with not network access then installing from there but the installer would reach the "restart to install updates" then upon restart the black screens would occur.
2nd Method: Tried to allow windows to install drivers on It's own and it did install the "Officially" drivers 335.23 but they failed to install just as the previous method did.
3rd Method: Removing Re-seating the RAM, and Video Card and checking cables and fans making sure everything was functioning properly. after removing and re-seating the Components I tried methods 1 and 2 a few times with no success.

HD 4000 : WHQL Version 15.31.9.64.3165 (64-bit)
I can see two WDDM 1.3 updates for HD4000 and AMD 8670 in Windows Update.
Does the WDDM 1.3 drivers overwrite the existing drivers or is it supposed to be installed alongside existing drivers?

Feb 20, 2013I just wanted to know if it was possible to use Intel Mobile 4 Series Express Chipset drivers with Windows 8. I've read that you could use the drivers for Windows 7 in Windows 8, but I haven't really proven that to be true.
I keep getting this error:
but I really don't get why I'm getting that message - it's giving me this message like I'm trying to run the software on a computer from the '90s. It really doesn't make sense to me since just about all other software can run on newer operating systems.
All I want to know is if it's possible to install these drivers on my computer, and if not, if there's a patch or a substitute.

Feb 26, 2014Recently I did a full uninstall of all AMD Components to do a clean installation of the latest 14.2 Beta Drivers. After that, while installing 14.2; I keep getting this weird message saying that:
It only started after installing 14.2 and I'm even trying to install 14.1 Beta Display & Audio Drivers just to see if its just 14.2, but it seems like those drivers wont work as well.
I went to Device Manager in Control Panel - the Audio Driver & Display are not there.
My GPUs' are two 7970's & CPU is the 8-Core Black Edition FX-8150.

"unable to detect supported product"
and of course that's as far as you get.
To resolve this issue:
1. Uninstall the current drivers.
2. Shutdown and power off. Physically remove the audio card.
3. VERY IMPORTANT STEP: Boot at least once with the audio card removed.
4. Shutdown and power off. Re-install audio card.
5. Bootup. Re-install drivers.
Graphic Cards :: HD7970 Gives Code 43 In Device Manager / Drivers Won't Install
Sep 15, 2014I recently bought a used Sapphire HD7970 GHZ Edition 3GB, which I got quite cheaply but it did need a little work doing to it.
Firstly the fan cable had, in the hands of the original user, somehow snapped and they had repaired it to run on a normal motherboard 4 pin fan lead. When I got the card the DIY repair had practically fallen apart but I was able to reconnect it all and both fans do spin (not sure if they are running fast enough but they are spinning and moving a little bit of air).
Anyway, second problem was the card had one of the two BIOSes flashed with an incorrect BIOS (seller said it was a BIOS of a different model of 7970) and needs reflashing.
So I fixed the fan lead, verified at least some cooling was happening and was able to get to Windows (8.1 64 bit) with it. However, in the device manager the card has the yellow exclamation mark and says "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)". I tried installing the AMD drivers regardless but they fail with warnings though still prompt to reboot, I rebooted on the hope they might have still installed but next thing Windows blue screens (well the Windows 8 version of it) with an unhandled exception warning and does this every time until I make it do a system restore then the card operates like it did before in that it outputs a picture but won't take the driver and fails to run anything more than 2D applications.
The seller has confirmed the good BIOS is already selected (he said it won't even boot to Windows on the other one) and recommended some beta drivers but these didn't work. I have also tried using Display Driver Uninstaller to remove all traces of old drivers (and manually deleted all AMD/ATI files and registry references) but no progress.
So why am I getting the code 43? Is there a diagnostic program that can tell me exactly what is stopping the card from working? How I might get this card up and running again?

Oct 19, 2013I bought myself a Radeon HD 7770 a few months back to replace an old GeForce 9600GT. A few weeks after installing the AMD card, I was going through my programs cleaning out old files and decided to remove all the Nvidia stuff. I removed the drivers and stuff and upon reboot, my computer would no longer boot to the desktop. I ended up having to use system restore to get the computer working again...
Fast forward to yesterday. I upgraded from Windows 8 Pro with Media Center to Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center, and I started experiencing the same problem listed here: "Win 8.1 desktop right click takes 15 seconds!" I tried the same solution that was found and it did not work for me. My guess is it had something to do with the Nvidia driver software still being installed on my computer. So I again attempted to remove the drivers. At this point I couldn't even remove the Nvidia software as nothing happened when I pressed the uninstall button. I ended up having to reinsert the Nvidia card, and reinstall the drivers, in order to uninstall the drivers. After I restarted and reinstalled the AMD card, the computer, like before would no longer boot to the desktop. All I would get was a mouse pointer that would appear and disappear every couple of seconds and a Number lock button on the keyboard that would be turning on and off at the same interval. If I reinsert the Nvidia card the problem goes away, but obviously I don't want to keep the old card in my computer.
My question is: Why would the computer boot with the Nvidia card when the Nvidia drivers are uninstalled and yet not boot with the AMD card when the AMD drivers ARE installed?

Mar 1, 2014My computer is hp envy dv6 7280sf notebook with 2 GPUs intel graphics HD 4000 and Nvidia Gefoce 630 M running windows 8 64x.
After making an free upgrade online for windows 8.1 which run successfully, both gpus were ok...
But after receiving a windows update with new drivers for intel graphics 4000 gpu , after install and restart , the computer freezes on blank black screen at windows startup with no mouse or anything only backlight.
So safemode was succeful but i figured that the update for windos update was the cause and graphics drivers were installed so i removed the drivers for intel graphics and itried to reboot the computer so the restart was succeful but the intel graphics card was unistalled and no drivers were automatically installed so i tried to download and install the drivers from hp and intel website for windows 8.1 however the install fails.
Automatic install from device manager failed both online and from computer and even from manual driver selection.
So therefore the install failed in safe mode , and the high def audio device ( on screen audio possibly) failed and the device was not recongnized (no drivers installed) so i'm stuck without anydrivers for the integrated gpu and the games are no longer able to run normally even if the nvidia card is on.
I tried downloading an installing Windows 8 drives but it failed to install also , for instance any new install of drovers seems to fail for me even for external usb hard drive.

Feb 21, 2014I'm building a system for cryptocoin mining, and am having a little problem with getting Windows 8.1 (home, not pro) to run the 3rd card (GPU) My equipment is:
Gigabyte 990 FXA UD3 MOBO
AMD Vishera CPU
2x4 gig Corsair Ram
3x Sapphire r9 280x Video cards
1000w Corsair PSU
Scandisk SSD
All parts are brand new.
Here is the problem... everything boots just fine and runs with 2 of the GPU's installed. I have the latest AMD 13.12 drivers, and the AMD APP SKD installed. When I add the 3rd GPU though, windows will auto detect it as a Radeon 7900 with the caution sign, AND/OR a r9 200 series card, also with the caution sign, most times BOTH. Then it randomly freezes the system. A couple of times I got it to run long enough just by luck I guess, to install the 13.12 drivers on the 3rd GPU, but then in a few minuites the system would freeze again.
2 GPU's run just fine, the problem only shows up when the 3rd card is installed, and it happens on any of the 4 16x slots, or both 1x slots on the MOBO. It doesn't matter if the GPU's are directly on the MOBO, or on 1x16 risers. There are plenty of folks running this set up with up to 6 GPU's, so I know it can be done, but I must be missing something somewhere in the windows set up.

Sep 5, 2013I've got a bit of a strange issue that I haven't had with previous OSes on this PC. I'm running a Dell OptiPlex 380 with Win 8 x64 at the office and I have to run 2 video cards for all of my screens. I have a GeForce 8400GS in the PCI-E slot and a GeForce 6200 in the PCI slot.
Previous to the Win 8 install, it worked fine. Booted exactly as I had shut it off. Now, with 8 - it's killing my PCI-E card presumably when it puts the screens to sleep when I leave for the day. So I'm coming in to all of my windows being moved to the PCI card's monitor (only one hooked to it) and I have to reboot to get PCI-E card to come back.
If I check the screen properties, I see only the screen hooked to the PCI card. I've changed the setting in the BIOS for the first video card to Auto and also tried the PCI-E selection and it's the same either way.
Why on earth would it default to the PCI card rather than the PCI-E card?

My working environment uses desk top...monitors are big and out of reach ...some workers have their 17" monitors under a glass surface top work table, so touch screen input is useless.... so can I use windows 8 with keyboard and mouse only ?

May 3, 2014I got to the office yesterday and the PC, which I left running and working as usually, had in it's screen the common message saying the computer can't boot any device (strange since the computer was running and it's a message hat appears when booting). After trying to reboot it a couple of times, a message saying "...kernel... file is missing... try advance tools..." was shown. I tried to "refresh" the system.
Anyway, The thing is that after refreshing I have lost much more than the apps. The apps I can retrieve, It will take me half a day to retrieve almost all of the software, but doable. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE DATA??? I have two drivers on the PC, C: (software) and D: (data), and it looks as if my "D:" driver had been erased or something. I see it but I can't open it (properties say it's empty and before being opened has to be formatted). I don't get it....
Where is my data??? Whereis my driver?
How To Get Data Off Of Windows 8 Drive That Crashed
Oct 17, 2013I have a laptop that crashed over the weekend. I need to do a restore on the computer but before I do I need to get the documents and pictures off of the drive. I've taken the drive out of the laptop and plugged it into my Windows 7 desktop using an external USB bay. I hear the computer detect the drive but it will never show up as a drive. If I look in Computer Management it shows up in there.
