View 4 Replies View RelatedI didn't install any 3rd party app to mount iso. Yesterday, i tried to mount a iso file, it didn't worked. Then googled about it, tried sfc /scannow, no success. Then I checked "Default programs - associate file extension...", there is no entry for .iso.
Tried Daemon tools lite... that is not working either.. After enabling virtual drives in DT, device manager's showing this:
I will be tri-booting Linux (elementaryOS and Debian) and Windows 8 on a laptop for college. On Linux, you can use a seperate partition and mount it to the /home folder.
Is it possible to do this on Windows 8? to mount the partition at C:/Users, to where instead of having a folder there, a data partition is accessed through the folder?
Under Win 8 Pro 64-bit, I discovered the following oddity: When I try to mount an ISO image using the Windows' built-in mounting function, it works when the the ISO is located on a local drive, but NOT if it is on a network drive (linked to my NAS). The latter case yields an error saying that mounting failed without further explanation. (YES, the Iso file type is associated to Windows Explorer and YES, there is a spare drive letter after the local drive letters; actually my local drives are from B: (DVD) to D:, and the network drives are between F: and Z:, so that a mounted ISO receives a virtual drive at E: .
Qny better solution than installing third-party mounting software like DaemonTools?
How do I clean mounted image after integrating updates and drivers? When I give the final command of commit, the resulting image is 4.8 GB.
I found this command
dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /startcomponentcleanup
This command also removes un-needed installed updates. But it is for cleaning the installed OS on C: and not for Mounted image using DISM.
I have problem mounting .iso images in Windows 8 Pro.
The error message I was getting was this:
and in powershell I got this:
Essentially the problem is that windows .iso mounting does not like 'sparse' files. I had used Acronis backup to backup my original .iso files and this DOES use sparse files. You can check if a file is 'sparsed' by looking at the files details in properties. The 'P' in the attributes represents a sparse file. See the screenshot below.
The result? When I restored my .iso images I could no longer mount them.
The simplest solution I have found is to just copy the .iso to a new file - this seems to create the new file without the sparse flag set.
How do I find this "feature" in windows 8.1 so I can turn the darn thing off: Prevent Windows From Being Automatically Arranged When Moved To The Edge Of The Screen Total frustrating not being able to have windows on my screen without them all automatically maximizing! I searched under mouse, and Aero, , but its just not visible to me.

Late last Fall I bought a new Desktop, an HP H81414, with Windows 8 installed with the intention of installing Windows 7 on an SSD. I migrated Window 8 to an SSD, removed that from the system, installed new SSD and put Windows 7 on it. Both worked fine. I wound up with 2 SSD's. capable of running on the EFI BIOS machine with Secure Boot turned off. I later bought a new laptop with Windows 8. I found the Win 8 with Classic Shell to be very acceptable.
What I would like to do now ,if possible, is to mount both SSD's in the HP case and switch to either one of them at boot.
I have windows 8.1 and downloading the 13.12 Drivers gave me this program called "AMD Feature Manager". It has a green AMD logo and shows up when I right click anywhere in the desktop, right under "AMD Catalyst Control Center". Whenever I click on it - the program just loads AMD CCC. It seems pretty redundant to include this since I have "AMD Catalyst Control Center" right above it that does the same exact thing. Is there registry edit that can get rid of the option in the Context Menu or can I just uninstall it completely?

Any way of enabling the built in zip feature but not have zip files displayed as folders in Explorer and wherever else? I use a program that needs to use the zip feature but I really hate how zips show up as folders. I know how to disable the zip feature but that results in my program not being able to utilize zip processing.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed Windows 8 a few days ago. It took some time to put together the partitions and programs I wanted to install on my new SSD and set up the external storage drive with my old hard drive, but it was totally worth the effort. I love the operating system and how it works with my desktop and hardware. It boots quickly, the themes are aesthetically pleasing, and access to everything is far easier to navigate.
However, I do have some issues with the Metro Menu / Applications. I have downloaded several applications, notably Twitter and Skype. Those two applications have been snapped into the left side of my screen. While they are useful and important to me, what troubles me is that I don't have a copy / cut function for either application.
Is there a way to add that feature to both applications? I would much rather avoid the clutter of a desktop Skype program or view Twitter via Google Chrome.
I have an external drive which was used with a Vista PC, and which contains some folders encrypted using the Encrypting File System feature. My Vista PC crashed, so I bought a Win 8 PC. This PC doesn't have the Encrypting File System feature, and so will not let me access these files. Is there some way I can get around this? I know the Administrator password for the Vista PC that was used to create these files.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've installed StartMenuReviver which I find an excellent program. I've noticed that when I use the standard power off feature of the Metro interface that power is still present on (my) USB ports as witnessed by USB speakers still on and USB mouse still glowing (multi-coloured lighting inbuilt)
IF I use the power off feature of the StartmenuReviver app then I truly power off; speaker on light goes off as does the lighting feature of the mouse.
Obviously a complete shutdown is preferable so I turn off using the StartMenuReviver app. Is their a reason the Metro app doesn't fully shut down PC ??
I have been playing around with the Secure Boot feature to see if I could tell what properties it might show. Currently, to enable the full Secure Boot feature, I have to use the on board graphics, since my Graphics card does not have a UEFI Op Rom.
So far, I know Windows 7 will not boot on my machine when the Windows 8 Secure Boot bios settings are enabled, which means disabling the CSM (Compatibility Support Module). When the Windows 8 Secure Boot is on and I try to Boot Windows 7, I am returned to the Bios with a notification that some settings have been reset for compatibility. Windows 7 boots fine after that.
Because many systems will have devices that will not meet the Windows 8 standards, like Graphic Cards, the secure boot may really only be fully available on new systems.
But the CSM seems to be a way to bridge the gap by ignoring certain non-UEFI Op Rom devices during boot. Msinfo32.exe shows Secure Boot ON with the module enabled and certain options being set. I am thinking that would stop Root Kits, but have not found anything to confirm that it would.
I suppose I need to go find a really bad Root Kit somewhere to test !!
I updated my computer today. And when I try to refresh I found this and I read that using ShellExView - Shell Extension Manager For Windows I can remove it.

I'm running windows 8 x64 and when I open 'Programs and Features' to uninstall a program, the 'Uninstall' button that is usually next to the 'Organize' button is missing. Also when I try to right click on most programs and left click the 'Uninstall' option, I get the message "An error occurred while trying to uninstall X. It may have already been uninstalled. I backup my data from my Windows 8 computer to an external hard drive regularly using File History but I also transfer some of this data to several other computers with various operating systems (Windows 7 & Ubuntu being the primary ones) and I noticed that, while it is simple to restore/transfer files to Windows 8 computers through the File History menu, on these other operating system one is forced to navigate to the folders on the drive and copy the files over.
This wouldn't be a problem except that all the files saved with File History have a long time stamp appended to their file names.
Is there any way to disable this feature? I don't care so much about having to copy the files manually to other operating systems as I do having to rename them all after doing so.
