Any way of enabling the built in zip feature but not have zip files displayed as folders in Explorer and wherever else? I use a program that needs to use the zip feature but I really hate how zips show up as folders. I know how to disable the zip feature but that results in my program not being able to utilize zip processing.
I have been playing around with the Secure Boot feature to see if I could tell what properties it might show. Currently, to enable the full Secure Boot feature, I have to use the on board graphics, since my Graphics card does not have a UEFI Op Rom.
So far, I know Windows 7 will not boot on my machine when the Windows 8 Secure Boot bios settings are enabled, which means disabling the CSM (Compatibility Support Module). When the Windows 8 Secure Boot is on and I try to Boot Windows 7, I am returned to the Bios with a notification that some settings have been reset for compatibility. Windows 7 boots fine after that.
Because many systems will have devices that will not meet the Windows 8 standards, like Graphic Cards, the secure boot may really only be fully available on new systems.
But the CSM seems to be a way to bridge the gap by ignoring certain non-UEFI Op Rom devices during boot. Msinfo32.exe shows Secure Boot ON with the module enabled and certain options being set. I am thinking that would stop Root Kits, but have not found anything to confirm that it would.
I suppose I need to go find a really bad Root Kit somewhere to test !!
How do I find this "feature" in windows 8.1 so I can turn the darn thing off: Prevent Windows From Being Automatically Arranged When Moved To The Edge Of The Screen Total frustrating not being able to have windows on my screen without them all automatically maximizing! I searched under mouse, and Aero, , but its just not visible to me.
How to disable the auto complete feature in the windows 8.1 "start screen"(or whatever its called now) search bar preferable the inline auto complete as it is messing up my search results and it does not seem to be tied to the settings in the control panel that i can find. it seems to be creating a history and trying to intelligently fill results which is causing more of a problem then it is solving as many things have similar names.
I just installed Windows 8 a few days ago. It took some time to put together the partitions and programs I wanted to install on my new SSD and set up the external storage drive with my old hard drive, but it was totally worth the effort. I love the operating system and how it works with my desktop and hardware. It boots quickly, the themes are aesthetically pleasing, and access to everything is far easier to navigate.
However, I do have some issues with the Metro Menu / Applications. I have downloaded several applications, notably Twitter and Skype. Those two applications have been snapped into the left side of my screen. While they are useful and important to me, what troubles me is that I don't have a copy / cut function for either application.
Is there a way to add that feature to both applications? I would much rather avoid the clutter of a desktop Skype program or view Twitter via Google Chrome.
I have an external drive which was used with a Vista PC, and which contains some folders encrypted using the Encrypting File System feature. My Vista PC crashed, so I bought a Win 8 PC. This PC doesn't have the Encrypting File System feature, and so will not let me access these files. Is there some way I can get around this? I know the Administrator password for the Vista PC that was used to create these files.
This is my first computer with Windows 8. When I click on the search feature on the right hand sidebar, there is an icon/title for "Files" but none of my files are showing up. If I start saving files (Word Docs, PDFs, etc) on my computer, where do I save them so they show up in this feature?
I've installed StartMenuReviver which I find an excellent program. I've noticed that when I use the standard power off feature of the Metro interface that power is still present on (my) USB ports as witnessed by USB speakers still on and USB mouse still glowing (multi-coloured lighting inbuilt)
IF I use the power off feature of the StartmenuReviver app then I truly power off; speaker on light goes off as does the lighting feature of the mouse.
Obviously a complete shutdown is preferable so I turn off using the StartMenuReviver app. Is their a reason the Metro app doesn't fully shut down PC ??
for some reason a lot of the servers im lately getting from leaceweb have something wrong with there OS the build in admin account is constantly getting asked to do things as an admin like this
My cd/dvd drive is not being detected by my laptop. It is getting power but is not being detected. I tried the cd and hardware Microsoft fix-its and the hardware troubleshooter. Nothing works
I was wondering if there was a way to create a x64 setup executable in a pre-bult Win 8 AIO (containing both x32 x64). I am also aware that the maker of the AIO used x32 to increase compatibility between x64 and x32 computers.
So I've never seen how 2 apps snapped look when using a tablet in portrait mode. All I seem to see is landscape snapped apps. So can this even be done on a tablet.
It looks rather useful, but not sure if it can be used in landscape and portrait?
It was very upsetting in case of Windows 7 the system explorer was unable to retrive folder size information. It was possible to preview file size in detail view but not folder size.
How is this feature in case of Winodws 8 explorer. Is the appropriate hook exposed in API or is it still missing as it was in case of Winodws 7?
My PC freezes when I'm just browing the web. It doesn't happen when I'm decoding a video, or when I'm playing a game, or running an emulator. It always happens when I'm browsing, or during idle. All of a sudden there's a slowdown, and the right mouse click menu takes a while to appear. When the right click menu appears it's kind of transparant/greyish and then it fully appears but none of the options work. For example I right click on the desktop and click task manager, but it never appears. I can minimize/maximize windows but cannot close or open new ones. Then it's completely frozen, I can't do anything other than move the mouse around.
Yet Metro UI still works, somewhat until it slows down and completely freezes again. I cannot restart or shut down PC, I have to do it manually by holding down power button or pressing the reset button.
I get no error messages... I used to have malware antibytes installed but removed it. I have all the drivers up to date (motherboard, sound, graphics card, intel, and windows updates of course).
Deleted graphics drivers and installed latest ones and the problem still persists.
I have dual monitors set up, one at 1920x1080 and another one at 1600 x900 on DVI from graphics card. It's happening very frequently now, after about 15 minutes, no matter what I do.
Just performed a clean install of Windows 8 Pro. x64 on a new system. As soon as Windows finished installing, I opened secpol.msc, enabled the built-in administrator account, rebooted and deleted the first account I made during Windows setup and am now using the built-in administrator account as my main account. I don't care if the Metro apps. don't work.
What I want though is a way to change the account picture for this built-in administrator account. When I go into the Metro UI, click on the my username at the top right of the screen and click on "Change account picture", nothing happens.
When I go into the desktop then Control Panel -> User Accounts, there is no option to change the account picture.
How to change the user account picture for the built-in administrator account?
Built my pc about a week ago seemed to be working until i started getting constant bsod.
i have an Asrock z87 extreme 3 and a 4670k an r9 280x by sapphire and 2 x 4gb on corsair 8gb low profile ram.
the Bsod's often happen when semi intensive task are happening, watching hd videos playing games etc, and always happens when i restart pc after a shutdown or if it wakes from sleep.
The in-built account on my laptop has been somehow disabled and now I can't install any programs as it keeps asking for admin password even though it is disabled and I can't seem to re enable it.
Windows 8.1 and I have noticed that even after setting my (online) Microsoft account as Administrator, and disabling UACP, many actions still require me to "Allow" them.
So my question is, can I tun that so called "Microsoft Admin Account" to behave just like built-in Administrator one so I don't get those annoying prompts ? If not, is there a way to make everything on my PC run as Admin ?
I know how to set Admin right on a per-app basis, but that's not what am looking for, as I am the only one using this PC. And want to keep using my "Online" account coz I sync a lot of things.
I updated my computer today. And when I try to refresh I found this and I read that using ShellExView - Shell Extension Manager For Windows I can remove it.
"No. In ShellExView, click the company column so they are arranged in alphabetical order by company name.
Look at "Advanced Micro Devices, Inc."

You'll probably have to kill Explorer with Task Manager then restart it to see changes take effect." But I tried it, I only have 2 amd products in my computer.
How to disable the categories feature in Windows 8.1 Mail? After the 8.1 update, the mail app now seems to separate all my incoming mail into new categories such as "social networks" and "newsletters" and its extremely annoying. I just want a simple inbox with everything.
I'm running windows 8 x64 and when I open 'Programs and Features' to uninstall a program, the 'Uninstall' button that is usually next to the 'Organize' button is missing. Also when I try to right click on most programs and left click the 'Uninstall' option, I get the message "An error occurred while trying to uninstall X. It may have already been uninstalled. Would you like to remove X from the Programs and Features list?" However, those programs have not been uninstalled.
I created a new task using the task manager with "at system startup" trigger. This used to work with Windows 7, but now with Windows 8 and its hybrid boot feature, the task is only run when the system does a full boot.
So, how do I run a command at hybrid boot startup without the user being logged in? I don't want to disable hybrid boot either.
I am new to Windows 8, I had a corrupt update, it was fixed, but my tile format is completely not how it should look...plus my built in apps, specifically photos, are gone...
My Windows 8.1 machine has only one interactive account - the built-in "administrator" account. It is just an internal file- and media-server without a monitor, which is accessed exclusively through Remote Desktop.
I would like to change the "user picture" associated with that built-in admin account. Trying to do it the "usual" way - through Control Panel -> User Accounts - does not work. Apparently, user picture selection is handled by a Metro app. And Metro apps are not launchable from the built-in admin.
Most likely there are workarounds. I can try using that hack that enables Metro apps under the built-in admin. Or I can add another interactive admin account and try changing the picture of the built-in admin from that other admin. I don't know whether any of these will work, I haven't tried yet.
But is there a more straightforward way to set the user picture for an account? Like copy the picture file to some folder or something like that?
