I have several computers on my Wireless/Wired Network. Wireless is dual band and Secured with WP2 Password. Basically on several of my PCs I can see connections to my neighbours computers showing as Windows Media Player Icons. When I first noticed this I fully restored my router (Western Digital) creating new SSIDs and Passwords, however I can still see these computers.
I'm not personally bothered that I can see them as I can always click remove device, I'm more interested WHY I can see them and Can they see my computers as I do have some without Password Protected sharing as I assumed only devices on my network could access these.
My PCs are Running a Mix of Windows 8.1 and 7 and both can see the 2 neighbour computers. I have homegroup set up with a secured password too.

When I refresh networks, I see all the networks I should (we have an extender, so there are two regions on our house) -- but I also see one called Hidden Network. How do I find out what that is? There are no nearby houses. This has to be emanating from my house.

I have a windows 8 laptop with a 3G USB modem. I'm trying to share it's internet connection via my wifi network. The other two pc's on the network runs XP and Vista.
I've managed to get the network working, all pc's see each other and they can share files, etc, but just the damn internet won't share.
I've changed my router to use the same ip range as the wifi on the windows 8 pc, 192.168.137.x. I've ensured that the modem's network connection is shared. all the pc's belong to the same workgroup called, WORKGROUP.
In services i have ICS running, i've tried restarting this service.
What bothers me is that my wifi network on my windows 8 pc shows as "unidentified network", even though i have made sure that everything is set to shared that should be set to shared. so i don't know if that could be part of the problem?
I've also tried setting up the vista pc with a static ip and setting it's default gateway and primary dns to the same ip as the Windows 8 pc.
Attached are screenshots of my ipconfig.

Two days ago my ISP replaced my modem-router for a new one. Ever since the replacement, my main desktop computer won't connect to the internet "immediately". I checked the connection via ethernet and WiFi with my other computers (even tested every single one of my ethernet cables) and they work perfectly fine, except for my main desktop computer.
What my desktop does:
When I turn it on I have to wait for around an hour before it connects to the internet. During that hour, it attempts to identify something (I guess the IP? - the yellow warning icon gets displayed) and after 3 seconds of attempting, the connection drops and it goes back to saying "No connection". The connection is being made via Ethernet cable and I tried the troubleshoot but it continues to say that I need to plug-in a ethernet cable to my computer, thing is it is already plugged in and like I stated above, the cable worked fine with all my other computers. My desktop used to work perfectly fine with my old modem-router.
I attempted to do do some troubleshooting refreshing my ip using the cmd with admin privileges but nothing worked as it said every time that there was no media connection. My desktop just randomly connects to the internet by itself after an hour of attempting to connect and disconnecting and once it gets connected it works perfectly fine until I restart my computer or turn it off and then the next day it'll be the same thing over again.
This has gotten extremely annoying, what can I do to fix this and further prevent it from happening? - I updated all my drivers and it's still the same. It'll just connect to the internet whenever it wants to.

Okay, so in Windows 7 I am able to connect my wireless to my phone, and run an ethernet cable over to my Xbox. If I use the ICS feature and configure it under services to allow ports 88 and 53 UDP, it works fine. This also allows my Xbox to seemingly add to this list of ports as it finds necessary.
The issue is however, with Windows 8, although I can connect to Xbox Live the same way, it does not seemingly allow the Xbox to add more ports that it deems necessary. This leads to that NAT error message that I am actually trying to do this as a way to bypass it.
In Windows 7 this only works if the connection is set to Home (not sure about Work), but not public. I'm curious if the reason this does not work in Windows 8 is that Windows 8 does not have a Home option, but rather only Private or Public settings. There is some small setting buried deep somewhere that I just need to change to treat it like Windows 7 allows Xbox to treat home networks and configure/add ports automatically.

I'm new to Win 8.1 but I'm fairly tech-savvy. I've got a new Toshiba Satellite S55 B5289 with Win 8.1, connecting to the Internet via Time-Warner over wifi. I'd go into the details of the wifi and router, but given that I've got a month-old HP with Win 7, and a 2-year old Samsung Chromebook sitting here with the Toshiba, all three running Chrome as opposed to IE, and the other two getting significantly better speed, I don't think those details are really critical.
This problem has been going on since I brought the new laptop home, but I've carefully uninstalled all the bloatware that came pre-installed, and made the standard Chrome tweaks [unchecking the hardware accelleration] nothing has worked. Yesterday I took it to a friend who has a computer repair business and he tuned up a lot of the things inside Win 8.1 that I had no clue about - as I understood it, making 8.1 run Chrome without going *through* IE. I didn't pay as much attention to that as I should have, but essentially everything seemed to be working very well. His Internet connection, however, is lightning fast, and connecting to that wifi, things were downloading and running spectacularly well. Just what I'd expected - or at least hoped for - when I bought it.
Using it at home today, the problems have resurfaced. Loading emails, for instance, is not quite right. Images in the emails frequently don't load properly - it will stutter and often stops in the middle of an email. If I click on a link, there can be a significant delay before the page loads. Videos buffer every few seconds and even when I let the entire video load, it still plays spastically.
All of this is in Chrome, using tabs - which I always do. Yes, of course I could clear the cache, start fresh, use no tabs, let one thing load at a time, but that's not what I have ever done, so this is real world testing. The most telling detail, though is the download speeds I'm getting.
Running Speedtest on all three machines, the ping is basically the same, but on the Toshiba, it frequently can't even finish the download test. It just stalls to a halt. The Chromebook gets a download speed of 5.75 and the HP gets 21.31. We pay Time-Warner for 20, so I'd really like to see something like that on the Toshiba.

I am having trouble with ICS on win 8. On my old laptop (win xp) I used to be able to share my 3Connect dongle internet to connect to Xbox live. I recently got a new laptop with win 8 and whenever I share this internet connection I can never connect on my Xbox (the network to internet part fails). When everything is connected up and shared the Ethernet says 'Unidentified Network' which i believe is the cause of the problem. I've read i may require a driver update but i cannot seem to find one.
My Laptop: Toshiba Satellite C855-29N
what to do, maybe i am not setting up the connection sharing properly?

Recently bought 3 laptops for the household (1 HP Envy TouchSmart m7 Sleekbook, and 2 Gateway NV570P10u Touchscreen Laptops)
Laptops came with Windows 8, I immediately upgraded to Windows 8.1 so I cannot say if things were working when I had Windows 8
I have all these laptops connected to the Internet via DLink-Dir655 Router. Additional devices connected to the router/internet are a wireless printer, server running Windows Server 2008, laptop running Windows XP Professional, and a laptop running Windows 7 64-Bit Home Premium (along with couple cell phones running Android). All other devices have absolutely no connectivity issues ... Only the 3 laptops running Windows 8.1 keep giving us headache to a point we can hardly connect to the Internet using these (Winows 8.1) laptops
Interestingly, when I connect laptops via Ethernet cable connection is "little more stable" but I still get disconnects ("page cannot be displayed" errors) which leads me to the conclusion that it is not Wireless card always but Router or its settings are also playing a role.
We can focus on HP laptop to address this issue. It has Intel Centrino N-2230 as its built-in wireless card. Was having lots of disconnects or pages partially displayed but when I attached an old MediaLink Dongle (USB WiFi Card), internet connection became lot more stable. It is atleast 10x more stable compared to built-in wireless card but I still gets disconnected even with this dongle (and Ethernet cable as mention before)
PS: I tend to believe it is router's compatibility ... Otherwise why Ethernet Cable is giving the connectivity issue? But router is listed as compatible with Windows 8 on MS Website and Ethernet connection is 10x more stable than Wireless connection.

I have an iPhone 4 and it has the ability to share its 3G data connection over USB (or WiFi)
When I had Windows 7 and I put the option to share over USB, the minute I put the iPhone 4 in over USB, the connection would automatically be detected and used. But with Windows 8, I am forced to use the WiFi feature which is bad for my battery and speed and I wouldn't prefer this of course.
How to set up Windows 8 to use the internet connection over USB?

I just got done upgrading my wife's newer desktop PC that had Windows 8 on it. Did the simple (but LONG) upgrade to 8.1.
Now this PC can NOT access the internet. In Network settings, it's showing the Network Adapter and Access point have a strong signal off my Wi-Fi router, but when I open a Browser or Email NOTHING !!
I've checked Firewall settings etc.... to no avail.
Also, this PC is showing a DIFFERENT access point than my other devices that connect through my Wireless router.

My laptop keeps losing internet connection. It appears to remain connected to the router but not have actual internet connection. I have pinged the router thousands of times and have no packet loss so I don't suspect that is the problem. I've tried the internet connection on a computer running Windows XP, one running Windows 7, and one running Mac OS X and none of them have trouble staying connected, so it appears to be a problem only with this laptop.

my internet connection dropping every day, usually around 2-3 times per day. Internet goes off for a second or two and it comes back. Usually this wouldn't be a problem for me but I am a professional poker player and every time internet goes off, I loose all my active tables in poker lobbys (due to reconnect) which is unacceptable and a serious problem for me.
I have tried this now on both Windows 7 x64, as well as windows 8 x64, and same problem continue to happen after freshly formatting my PC. I am connected directly to my ISP modem and I have also connected another computer(laptop) in same way to determine if it's a computer issue and this problem isn't happening on my laptop. What Have I done so far?
-Updated latest driver, changed cables, disabling and replacing LAN cards, disabling sleep modes.
-Formatted my computer (Went back to Windows 8 from win7 as I thought this might be the issue but it isn't)
-Tried removing programs such as NOD32,Utorrent,etc..
-Talked with ISP who replaced the modem and confirmed it is stable and not dropping connection on their side.

I am currently having an issue with my network. Basically, every time my main PC is shut off, the wireless will drop it's internet connection. Devices will still connect to the wireless, but there will be no internet connection.
This had happened before, about 5 months ago, and I had fixed it by unchecking the TCP/IPv6 in my network adapter but now the same issue has come up. My main PC is wired direct to the router, which is a D-link DIR-655. As long as my PC is on, then the internet will work fine. If it is off, then at some point the connection will get dropped and not come back on until my PC is turned on again.

Internet worked fine for about a week until I started watching shows online and using a lot more data then suddenly I could no longer visit sites or use web based programs even though 8 says its still connected to the internet
If I restarted my computer it would work for maybe an hour then would happen again it seemed like if I deleted my cookies it would work for a longer period of time. If i reset the router or modem it would work for a bit as well. it has gotten so bad it stops working after about 30 seconds of usage now but after clicking my wifi connection and clicking reset estimated usage I was able to get about 20 minutes
If I plug into Ethernet into it instead of wifi it works for a while then has same issue I've also tried it on 4 seperate networks all were using the same model router ive since upgraded to a better router issue stays the same. Ipconfig sees the gateway and has an ip address but if I try to ping out or even to ping the router itself it times out Reinstalling windows 8 started the issue over could use the Internet heavy at first then progressively less as time went by No antivirus software, disabled firewall, disabled protective mode, all updates are done, did the netsh winsock reset

I've been having troubles with my internet connection for about 3 weeks. It all started like the 4th day after they installed the service. First couple of times it would only happens once or twice a day, but lately is been happening about 10 to 20 times a day. Pretty annoying since I am an online gamer and I have invested some money on games where I can get perma-banned.
I can be either talking on skype, or in the middle of a match and internet will disconnect and show No internet access Limited Connectivity. Every time I use troubleshoot problems, I always get the same result "default gateway not available" and if I do what windows tells me to reset the modem nothing happens, my computer reconnects with the limited connectivity sign.
And in worst cases, it happens over, and over, and over again so I have to unplug the modem and then reboot my computer for it to work, but the last couple of times that I've done that, computer doesn't connect to the internet and the troubleshooter says the Wi-fi is disabled, and asks if I want to fix it as administrator.
At first I thought it was the company's fault until I noticed that sometimes when my computer has no internet connection, I can still use my the internet on my ipod. That doesn't happen always, though.
Basic Details:
Hp Laptop- Pavilion g6
Windows 8
Modem Ubee

I got a broadband connection few days before and whenever I use that connection to access internet, Chrome alone works. Firefox, IE, Torrent application and all the Windows 8 apps are showing "unable to connect to internet".
I tried a lot of cmds like" dns flush, resetting connection etc" but nothing worked.
I even refreshed the whole OS, but the issue persists.

My computer keeps listing the internet connection as "limited". It does this randomly, I don't know when it will happen next. Restarting router/computer fixes it sometimes, but not all the time. Sometimes it takes about 4 restarts of the router until I get a proper connection. Trouble shooting merely describes the problem as having no connection and tells me to reconnect the router. This takes around 5 minutes each time and I'm getting tired of doing this, as it interrupts skype calls, games and conversations.

I know posts have been circulating around this topic but none that directly address my needs. I just recently did a fresh install of Windows 8 onto a brand new SSD. I then set all of my documents to be on my traditional hard drive. Everything worked perfectly for about one day then my metro apps stopped connecting to the internet. I am on the internet currently using the desktop application of Chrome and all of my desktop applications connect to the internet. Additionally my computer tells me it is connected to the internet and troubleshooting identifies no problems.
Here's the problem all of my metro apps will not connect to the internet. The "Store" app says that my computer is not connected to the internet. The weather app opens but does not refresh, and most of my apps do the same thing. they have a constant loading symbol.
I have no antivirus installed. I did install PocketCloud Windows Companion VPN service so that I can access my computer with my tablet. I have scavenged all the forums and there seems to be no answer. Is this just a problem of Microsoft's?

I've been having a problem since I updated to Windows 8.1My internet wi-fi connection is unusually low and is not working after only minutes of browsing the internet. The problem is always fixed after I run troubleshoot problems and is saying that the default Gateway is unavailable. My netword card might be the source of the problem even tough I updated the drivers. I'm not sure which one I have because drivers from Ralink and Qualcomm seem to be working both.

I have had my windows 8 laptop since January and have had absolutely no problems with it until now. i recently just took my laptop away on a holiday with me for a couple of weeks where i did not have any internet connection. The laptop was working fine and had no issues with playing a few games or watching movies etc. I just got home and started my laptop when i noticed no programs would open including (google chrome, internet explorer, various games and applications including the windows 8 menu screen programs).
However the only program that did open for me was files explorer. my first instinct was to restart my computer, so i did go to the settings button and selected restart. after waiting a couple minutes and not seeing and progress i held the power button in and then turned the computer back on. the same thing happened again and i again tried to restart my computer through the settings menu. however this time the restarting screen appeared, however after watching this screen for 20-30 minutes with no signs of updates or the like, i again held the button down to restart.
I did some googling and found users facing similar problems and mentioned about it all being involved with internet connection. i turned my internet off on the laptop and restarted the computer once more, when it came back on, all the programs worked as usual so i turned my internet back on, and as soon as i did, the computer refused to open any new programs. i went on my computer offline and deleted my newest programs and files i had installed the last time i had internet as well as running a full system scan on norton, norton could not detect any problems and the computer still refused to work online.

I recently updated from Windows 8 Pro to Windows 8.1 using Microsoft update. After the update was completed, I've started to have problems connecting to the internet using a wired connection. NOTHING else has changed since the update. If I reboot, it works for less than 30 minutes and then the connection switches to "limited connectivity" with no way to revert it back to the usual status. If I reboot the computer, it works fine again for a little bit. Oddly enough, if I connect the computer to the exact same router using wireless, it does not seem to be dropping the connection.
I'm using a Dell Studio XPS 8100 with the factory Broadcom Netlink Gigabit Ethernet adapter.
So far, I have: disabled, reenabled the device (PC seems to hang when I do this as well) reinstalled the drivers after removing them verified there is no proxy or weird DNS settings setup on the connection.
