Computer Keep Picking Up Malware

Feb 27, 2014

I posted about my friends computer that kept blue screening. I finally got that fixed and the computer is running good, but he keeps picking up malware.

Today while I was talking on the phone he had the Java Update thing pop up 4 times. Every time he runs Malwarebytes he finds PUPs and removes them but the phony popups etc keep happening.

He is running MSE and Windows Firewall, and he scans with Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware daily. I checked and MSE and the Firewall are shown as running normally.

This all started a month ago when he moved to a new home, prior to that his computer was as clean as mine.

After Doing Malwarebytes Anti Malware Test - Computer Freezing / Crashing?

Sep 15, 2014

After doing a malwarebytes anti malware test, my computer freezes/crashes every now and then. I'm not sure if its just coincidence but I'm a bit worried.

When the freeze starts nothing is clickable except windows explorer, then when i click on it that freezes as well. If I have a youtube video playing the sound will continue but not the video and sometimes the sound will stop.

Also when it freezes and I press ctrl+alt+delete nothing happens. And sometime after clicking things and it not responding the stuff I clicked will open when the freeze stops.

It it someting to do with my CPU, RAM or hard drive?

I have two hard drives btw. A ssd which has my OS and some games and programs on. And an old 1Tb normal hard drive for more programs, games etc.

Security :: Windows 8.1 Dell Laptop - Malware / Cannot Turn On Firewall

Sep 15, 2014

I just bought a windows 8.1 Dell laptop and I am having horrible issues with Malware. I have installed a malware removal tool that I pretty much run daily because the issue keeps coming back. I cannot turn on my firewall because it is being controlled by McAfee and I have to purchase it to turn it on, same issue exists with Windows Defender, it has been disabled which really seems ridiculous to me. Basically my browsers are being hijacked to use a different search engine and it opens extra tabs on every load which makes browsing slow.

Very Slow And Couldn't Connect To System Notification Center After Malware Removal

Jul 17, 2014

My father accidentally fell for the "your media player needs to be updated" and downloaded a ton of malware.

I used this guide: [URL]

And now it is running EXTREMELY slow and it can't load any Windows services on the computer. Any time I try to open a program it just stops responding.

Also while I was doing the malware removal "Safe mode with networking" was working fine. Now in the same "Safe mode with networking" the network isn't working. No internet available.

I am getting an error message "Failed to connect to system event notification center"

All the malware still isn't gone from Chrome but I need to fix this problem first.

Two OS On Same HD But On Different Partitions?

Apr 26, 2014

On my Desktop I have one 240GB HD (C:) with XP Home installed and various other programs. I also have 2 other IDE HD of 80GB (D:) and 40GB (E:) which I use to store my backups and other Utilities. I plan to buy Windows 8.1 and install it on this Desktop but I wonder which will be the best option. I would also like if possible to be able to dual boot between the OSs

One is to make an image of the XP Home and then re install it on the 80GB hard disk, then install the 8.1 on the SATA HD. Here I don't know when I install XP on the D: hard disk if the new image will make the changes to all programs from the C: to D:

The other option is to use GPARTED LiveCD and shrink the SATA hard disk to allow me to make 2 partitions. Here I don't know if it is a good idea to have two OS on the same HD but on different partitions. What is your opinion on the above and perhaps there are other better ways?

Maintenance :: Win 7 Drives In New Win 8 PC?

Aug 6, 2013

My five year old HP Pavilion crashed with virtually no signs of life, although the 2 320GB drives are only 8 months old, and are spinning when startup is attempted. No messages of any kind on the display; I checked the display and it is good. Bought a new HP, but it has Windows 8.

All my backup data is via Norton Ghost 15/Windows 7 and is intact on a 1 TB external Passport drive. I need to figure out how to retrieve this data.

A suggestion was made to just install the old Win 7 hard drive in place of the Win 8 hard drive in the new computer. New computer can't accommodate both old Win 7 hard drives, so I stuck the C: in, it per normal containing the startup and OS files. The computer would not boot from this drive, and delivered an error message to the effect "No bootable disk or drive has failed."

So the question is would there be anything in the BIOS of the new PC which would make it expect to see Win 8?? why it wouldn't boot from this drive? I realize the drive could be bad, but given the age of the drive, it seems unlikely...

Same Files In Two Drives - One Uses 70 GB More?

Jul 17, 2013

I had a Seagate MyBackup 1TB external drive. When it was half full I decided to buy another one, the same Seagate, same model, same 1TB.

So I copied the files to the new one and I do backups every week or so for the changes.

Today I noticed that the old one uses 70GB more than the other.

I mean, 70GB is a lot. I checked the files carefully, it's all my movies. Both are the same capacity, 931 GB. Even same color. The only difference I found is that the newest has 16MB buffer and the old one only 8MB.

Just in case it is relevant, I first used a program called Cobian Backup to make incremental backups and so on, but it was a mess and I uninstalled, formatted the new one and copied the files directly.Maybe Cobian took 70GB of drive #1 and they are now lost in nowhere? I don't detect hidden files, hidden partitions, etc.

Several HDD Partitions Combined To One?

Mar 8, 2013

Let me start off by posting a screenshot of my disk management section on control panel for reference latter on.

So the 1TB HDD (Disk 0) is were i'm having trouble, the 128GB SSD (Disk 1) is fine. As you can see, there are three different F partitions of various sizes that combine to form one single readable drive. Also, the disk is dynamic and all volumes have the yellow banner on them vs the blue like on the SSD.

Its kinda irrelevant how I got to this situation, but in a nutshell I (by mistake) put the system reserved on the HDD and on trying to remove it this happened. The third partition is a result of me trying to fix it. My wish is to get it to just one single basic partition that takes up the whole drive. Also, the drive is where I store all of my games so loosing its data is complete out of the question. I do have a external harddrive, but I doubt it could fit the contents of my games without crazy amounts of compression.

Win7 And Win 8 HDs - SWAP OS Across Drives

May 17, 2014

I have Windows 7 on a 120 Gig SSD.

I have Windows 8 on a 150 Gig HDD.

I want to swap the OS's, putting 8 on the SSD, and 7 on the HDD.

So far, I've made Ghost images of both drives, and the system reserved partitions.

I have a boot-able thumbdrive, and multiple ways to make the ghost images available [External HD, Server, large Thumbdrives] so restoring them will not be an issue.

The largest OS uese 89 Gigs, so that is not an issue, and I will redo several installs of software, but that's not important right now.

Are there ANY concerns with doing such a swap?

I'd rather not, but I can change the connections of the SATA cables if I HAD to! The BIOS is pretty advanced, so I don't expect that to be an issue.

Two Windows 8 Hard Drives On Same PC

Sep 4, 2013

I have a pc with 4 drives. And I got a new job, working from home and i wanted to make one of the drives just for work. It was one that i had windows 7 one and no longer used after i bought an ssd an put windows 8 on it. I am really liking 8 and so I put 8 on the second drive that had windows 7 on it.

It all worked fine, but when i tried to have two windows 8 drives on the same pc it made the drives unbootable. I had to re install windows on both drives again. I did some reading and i think its the fast boot feature of windows 8 that's causing the issue. I disabled fast boot on both hard drives. And before I plug them both in at the same time. I want to make sure that im not going to loos all my data again.

How To Separate DVD ROM Drives Into Different Categories

Oct 22, 2013

Consider this screenshot from first page:

I just want to know, is it possible to seperate the DVD-ROM drives into seperate categories like they were in Windows 8 and all other previous versions.

In 8.1, now the DVD-ROM drives appear mixed under the "Devices and Drives" depending on drive letter. I even have an iPhone Browser and Nokia Phone Browser appearing here, both of which have no drive letters. They aren't even drives.

I would like to take these icons out of the Hard Drives into an "Other" category like they were in Windows 7 and 8.

I have a lot of drives and was so used to the position each drive appeared.

Windows 8 Cannot Detect Other Partitions

Aug 19, 2013

So recently my windows 7's some system files got corrupt . won't start after windows logo (when the arrow shows up=>always bsod, even in safemode). so I decided to format C and install fresh windows 8.

Then I had four partitions C:windows(7) D:Softwares E:Games F:Mix Stuff.

My plan was to format C (of course for windows 8) and D (as C had only 20Gb space so I thought I would also format D 46Gb and give C 45Gb and D 20-21Gb as it was useless to me and contained only a bunch of crappy softwares ). Well, it FAILED here's how. after formatting C and D I deleted them thinking that boths unallocated space will merge. but it DID'NT.

After deleting I tried creating new partition on D but it FAILED "we cannot create create new partition" . Then I did same thing with C and it WORKED. I had to give it again 20Gb (maximum) - NO CHOICE. Then I installed Windows 8 on C. (thinking I will later format D on desktop)

Now here's the scenario : I DO NOT WANT TO FORMAT E: AND F: AS IT CONTAINS MY PRECIOUS DATA. After the startup config, 'Startup' came up I went to Desktop then Computer and then what????

WHERE THE HELL ARE OTHER PARTITIONS????????
Only C: I found there 7.67Gb free of 19.5GB.
Where are others gone .

I went to disk management and saw only (C:) other 138Gb (something) was unallocated space. Then I booted my pc from windows installation usb and on the drive screen I saw C 19.5-20Gb and Unallocated space 138Gb.

Folder Isn't Showing Partitions Other Than C?

May 25, 2013

I've got a laptop with two NTFS partitions on it; one for Windows 8, and another for storage of random things. Both are NTFS-formatted, and they're on a basic disk.

The problem is: When I open the "Computer" window, it only shows me the C: drive that I'm running Windows from. Other things are there... the DVD-RW, network folders, other computers on the net, etc. But the H: drive (the other NTFS partition I use for random storage) isn't there. HOWEVER..... if I go up to the address bar and type in "H:" and hit <Enter>, it takes me to that drive, and the H: drive suddenly appears in the folder-pane on the left of the window.

It does the same thing for any USB drives I plug in. I can type their drive letters into the address bar, and then it'll take me to that drive and it's icon will show up in the left-hand folder pane. But then, when I navigate away from that drive, it disappears again.

It's like Windows is hiding them from me unless I know the address, kinda like how putting "$" at the end of a shared folder name does it with network shares.

Combine Two Partitions In Windows 8?

Jul 1, 2013

how to combine two partitions in windows 8..

First Of all You Need To Open Control Panel Then Go to System Security-Administrative Tools Then Computer Management

In Second Step You need To Open Storage And Then Disk Management

In Third Step . Now you need a partition which will be added to the targeted one (E: drive will be added to D:). The drive which will be added to another, should be back-up before this major change on disk partitions.

So be Sure that You Done Backup Files Then Delete the Partition Then After Getting a Free Space Partition,Move To partition (D Drive) Which Will Be Extended and right-click on it. Select the Extend Volume and go Next.

Select Next From the Bottom Side And Then It will take a Few Minutes To Merge Two partition Into Single Drive.

Hard Drives Not Partitioned Appropriately

Jul 25, 2013

I purchased an Acer laptop from EBay. It was listed as a refurbished unit. However it looks like it was a complete system wipe and OS replacement. There are no Acer hardware drivers installed and no Acer applications available. My real problem is that the computer has been set up with two hard drives visible in "Computer" a (C drive and "New Volume (D. I believe that when this computer was "refurbished" the installer improperly assigned the drives. In disk management the drives are labeled Disk 0: System reserved 350 MB and New Volume (D 297.75 GB. Disk 1: (C 18.64GB. The C: drive is completely full, with the OS however, it is also the default drive meaning that everything tries to install to that drive, but can't. I want to move the (C drive to the New Volume (D drive or merge the two drives together. Is there a way to perform this task so that the computer will boot up into Windows 8.
