Win 8.1 - Boot Partition Showing In Drives

May 16, 2014

Just installed 8.1 on one of my machines. The 100 mb "system reserved" boot partition is showing up as drive E in the drives. It does not show on my other Win 8 machine. Why would this be? Is there some way to hide it?

Hardware Drivers :: Hard Drives Not Showing Up In Computer?

I am currently running Windows 8 64 bit and when I go to "My Computer" it is only showing my C: drive. I know my other drives (internal, external and dvd) are working because I can enter the directory name (ie. H: or E:) into the address bar and the content appears. Is there any way to fix this problem so that they show up in "My Computer"?

Hardware Drivers :: Went Back To HDD - Optimize Drives Still Showing Solid State Drive

May 7, 2013

My SSD (Intel 60GB) was becoming too small to hold my Windows 8 system partition so I found another use for that SSD and went back to HDD. I transferred whole SSD to HDD with Paragon Backup & Recovery 2013 free, and now the system gladly boots from HDD.

But Windows 8 is somehow still thinking that they are running on SSD. For example "Optimize Drives" (Ex Windows Defragmenter) shows "Solid State Drive" as media type and probably because it can't access TRIM functions, it is unable to defragment the drive, so it is yelling that "Optimization is not available":

How do I convince Windows 8 that they are running from HDD again?

I have tried to remove this disk from "Disk Drives" in Device Manager, also I removed/reinstalled everything under "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers" and "Storage controllers" without any success.

Western Digital Black 4Tb - Partition Or Map Drives?

Jul 20, 2014

I am shortly replacing 3x 2Tb hard drives with a Western Digital Black 4Tb in a major reorganisation of my system. Currently my drives are not partitioned and folders have become badly organized as I was led to believe that partitioning wasn't a good idea nowadays. A few folders are mapped to drive letters and I have a 3Tb NAS drive on my router for backup.

My question is whether to partition the new 4Tb drive or to create a folder structure and map some to drive letters?

I have a Win 8.1 setup with 16Gb RAM, an SSD boot drive and SATA6 and am a photographer so have very large files to move around at times.

Setup Installation :: Migrating / Copying Boot Partition To Another HDD Partition

Jan 30, 2013

I have win 8 pro installed & two HDDs with two partions each , I want to migrate the boot partition to another partition on the second drive .

It would have been easier if i would have just cloned the complete drives but one of the partions on the 2nd drive has data which cannot be deleted .

So I have Drive

1 - Partitions C: ( boot partition ) & D:

Drive 2 - Partitions E: & F:

I want to remove Drive 1 from my PC so i want to copy C: to E: then remove drive 1 & boot from E:

I tried "Easeus todo backup" , did not work, it does not make the copy bootable , to make it bootale the whole drive has to be copied .

I tried making an image of C: using Windows 8 inbuilt backup feature then removed drive 1 , installed Windows 8 on E: then tried restoring the image of C: but i got some error.

Partition Showing Very Less Free Space Than Actual

Jun 10, 2014

My K partition is of 24.3GB and says that only 3.80GB is free.

However in reality, the data inside is worth only 14.3GB which means 10GB should be free, not 3.80GB.

What could be the problem? I have attached the screenshot too.

Even though there are no hidden files in this partition, I enabled 'View Hidden Items'. And the size is indeed 14.3GB only. So I wonder where my remaining 6.20GB is going!

Recovery Partition Showing After Upgrading To Windows 8.1

Aug 8, 2014

I upgraded my new refurbished Dell 15 7000 from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. Now, my hidden recovery drives are showing on "My Computer". On Windows 8, they were hidden so the user, or softwares, can't access the partitioned recovery drives.

After upgrading to windows 8.1, they are all visible on "My Computer" and files are be written on them. How can I hide these drives? I am afraid of doing Windows Update or installing Office 365 since they extract the files on a different drive and move them back to C drive.

Dual Boot In Win 8 Using 2 Hard Drives?

Dec 16, 2012

Is it possible to have two hard drives in the computer and to be able to choose which one to start with ?

I have in mind that one hard drive has all my normal programs and the other is used for Flight simulation program.

Both hard drives would have win 8 installed. If I could use one hard drive and partition it so the flight sim is on a separate partition. However, for two reasons I wouldn't want this as the flight sim with scenery requires a lot of Gigs. and secondly I believe that it would run faster on its own hard drive.

So. Is it possible to set up the computer to decide which Drive I wish to start ? and if so, how to set it up ?

Windows To Go On Certain Drives - Won't Boot When Using USB 3.0 Flash

Jan 10, 2014

I've tried everything. Basically it wont boot when using a USB 3.0 flash drive (which is faster than the external usb 3 hard drive am using) It simply stalls on the boot image part (The blue windows icon). And on my laptop it gives a blue screen type error. Yet wont let me boot into safe mode when using flash drive. However when I use external drive it works fine although the performance isn't great.

At first I though it could have been an issue with the boot/350mb partition so I copied that over. Still the same. I have also tried a fresh windows to go install with same results.

USB Stick: Patriot USB 3 45MB Write/160MB Read
USB HDD: External Case (USB3) With Toshiba 7200 Laptop Drive (ASMT 2105)

How to resolve this?

Win 8 Dual Boot 2xSSDs - Checking / Repairing Drives On Bootup

Jul 21, 2014

I have Windows 8 installed on 2 Samsung SSDs - one is 840 Pro and the other is 840 Evo. This is because I work on both video and music production and would like to keep things separate.

At first I tried cloning an "old" SSD on to both Pro and Evo to make life easy, but it was a total mess:

I would boot Windows 8 on either Evo or Pro, and before the password prompt, Windows would fire up a Checkdisk on one (or more) of the 5 HD I have (please find the logs and disklayout in the attachments).

This would usually happen if for eg, I'm working on Evo and then I restart to work on Pro - or vice-versa.

But sometimes I would be working on either one of them, and this flag notification would popup asking me to restart because Windows needs to perform a diskcheck.

What is strange to me is that if I do a manual diskcheck (right-click -> Properties -> Tools), it would complete it, the notification disappears but would return a second or two later.

There was a minor issue where for eg, some options in the Control Panel were still pointing to drive H: which before the cloning, was my original C: drive.

Otherwise all software was working perfectly fine.

So I decided to do a clean re-install on both Pro and Evo hoping to solve this diskcheck issue once and for all.

This was 10 days ago, and for the past 10 days I had used almost exclusively the Evo drive. Today I need to work on Pro but Windows wouldn't get past the diskcheck and on to the password prompt.

It's saying "Preparing for Repair", then changes to "Diagnosing your PC" but then this blue screen pops up asking me to choose between Shut Down or Advanced Options.

This happened on rare occasions, but before the fresh install, I would do this perhaps a couple of times in a row (i.e. go to the blue screen Advanced Options and click Exit and Continue to Windows 8) restart, and it would eventually go past the diskcheck and allow me to log in and work. But today it just won't do it.

EDIT: I don't know if it matters but as it is now, it automatically boots up on Pro unless I hit F12 and choose to boot on Evo. But as I said earlier I had only been using Evo for the past 10 days since the re-install.

Attached please find the Srt logfiles which I found by following a path shown to me on that blue screen.

The strange thing is that the path started with drive H: and why drive H: and not C: (i.e. the Pro drive, being the current Windows boot drive). But when I booted on Evo, and went on drive J: (the drive letter that Pro is assigned when I'm on Evo), I found the logfiles there.

Network / Sharing :: Could Not Reconnect All Network Drives - Error At Boot

Aug 2, 2014

Could not reconnect all network drives error at boot? I get it most of the time with a wired Ethernet connection. I've done a lot of searching and tried different things but nothing seems to work. This started a few months ago, was not there initially with Windows 8, 8.1 or 8.1.1.

With XP, you could do this to fix it:

Control Panel

Folder Options

View

Uncheck "Automatically search for network folders and printers"

This is no longer an option in Windows 8 (I think it disappeared with Vista).

Network / Sharing :: Connecting To Mapped Network Drives At Boot

Apr 28, 2014

This is a boot up timing issue, registry fix for network comming up. I am on a wired LAN which works ok. However, recently when booting I am getting the message cannot connect to network drives - these are mapped drives to NAS boxes.

However, when I access the drives the 'red X's' change to the network symbol and access is working. Its seems the computer wants to connect before the network is up. It is not a credential issue, but boot order. Is there anyway to make the network come up before the computer wants to map to it. Not a problem but a nag.

Deleted EFI Partition Now Can't Boot

Mar 11, 2014

I recently partitioned my Asus ROG G750JW into 2 main parts: One 300GB for a mackintosh, and one 6** (remaining space) for windows 8. That worked fine, until I tried to format what I thought was random partition with a size of 128MBs. I believe this to be the EFI partition, and you know what that does. I cannot boot to windows 8 or mac, and windows boot manager no longer shows up in BIOS. I have a windows 8 reinstall disk and the hackintosh install disk. When trying to refresh from the windows reinstall disk, I get an error saying that the disk is locked. What I need to know is if there is any way to restore this without erasing my hard drive. I do not have access to a windows computer (I can if I have to, but it wouldn't be ideal), but do have access to a mac. I don't have restore points, even if I did they are on the now one-huge partition, which by the way is listed as MBR format.

Boot With One Bootmanager Win 8 (and On Another Partition) Win 7?

Currently on my (new) computer there is only a (pre-)installed windows 8

In detail there is a 300 MB big active system partition (I guess with the Win8 boot manager).
and a 200GB parition with Windows 8

Now I want to create a new partition (with 50 GB) and install Windows 7 on it.

Is the Bootmanager on the 300MB partition capable to recognize automatically the Windows 7
system on the new partition?

Or do I have to install the old Win7 Bootmanager?

Windows Doesn't Boot After Trying To Create A Partition

Nov 13, 2013

I just purchased a brand new laptop (Lenovo s400) with Windows 8 (which was promptly updated to 8.1) and since I don't like having OS and personal files on the same disk, I used Partition Master for creating a new Partition to keep my files.

After PM rebooted the system, Windows doesn't boot and shows an error coded 0xc0000225. Lenovo adds a button to access System Recovery, but again I get the same error. As far as I can remember, I've never seen a recovery partition and no disks were included (Should've created a recovery USB drive as soon as I took it out of the box).

I would like to emphasize that this hard drive wasn't formatted, just re sized.
