Western Digital Black 4Tb - Partition Or Map Drives?

Jul 20, 2014

I am shortly replacing 3x 2Tb hard drives with a Western Digital Black 4Tb in a major reorganisation of my system. Currently my drives are not partitioned and folders have become badly organized as I was led to believe that partitioning wasn't a good idea nowadays. A few folders are mapped to drive letters and I have a 3Tb NAS drive on my router for backup.

My question is whether to partition the new 4Tb drive or to create a folder structure and map some to drive letters?

I have a Win 8.1 setup with 16Gb RAM, an SSD boot drive and SATA6 and am a photographer so have very large files to move around at times.

Windows 8 32bit - Recover Data On Crashed Western Digital Hard Drive?

Dec 23, 2013

I had Windows 8 32 bit installed on a WD5000AAJS 500 GB hard drive that died on me. I had a backup of it made using the free version of Paragon Backup & Recovery. Apparently there is something wrong with the disk image so I am unable to recover from it (spent the past week trying everything I can think of or find on the internet to get the image to work). Anyways, there are some files on the hd that I would REALLY like to recover.

I can connect the HD to another PC running Win 7 and it starts to spin (no noise or excessive vibrations). The PC sees the HD as an unallocated drive with 134217728 GB when I look in Computer Management. I read somewhere that this represents the largest possible size for a Win 7 HD (something like that - I'm sure I'm wrong, though). Anyways, I was thinking that since at least the HD spins and the PC can see it, there must be some way to recover the files off of it. There is a MySQL db on there that I would like to recover and some batch and vbscript files I would like to recover.

Windows 8 Stuck At Black Screen (with Mouse Cursor) After Deleting Linux Partition

Aug 15, 2014

I have a problem in my dual boot machine. I decided to remove Linux mint 17 from my dual boot with windows 8.
I used easeus partition manager to delete the partitions associated (root, home and swap). Then I got unallocated space just before my windows partition. So I moved my windows partition to the extreme left possible. Then I merged this unallocated space with my second storage partition.

These steps required reboot (specifically the moving of windows partition). When I rebooted my PC I got an error that grub was not found. I realized that I had forgot to fix MBR and load windows boot loader. So I used windows 7 recovery disk (yes windows 7 as I don't have windows8 recovery or installation disk). I got a windows 7 style boot loader instead of windows 8's graphical one which has advanced recovery options built in. But I proceeded. Then eases did its job with the partitions. After a reboot now I am stuck at a black screen after entering my password with a movable mose cursor. I can only press Ctrl+alt+del. Selecting task manager from it does nothing.

Since I don't have windows 8 disks and windows 8 boot loader I am not able to refresh or reset my PC. Neither can I shift restart my PC to get advanced boot options. One more thing to note, that while entering password, I noticed that the lock screen and account pictures have changed to defaults of a freshly installed windows.

Audio :: Windows Deletes Digital Mic Recording

Jun 7, 2014

Unfortunately, other than simply cutting out or fading volume, or just plain refusing to record, Windows doesn't give any message at all. There's no error code, or anything.

I've tested the mic. The recording is on there, but Windows 8 has, on a number of occasions, deleted or skewed my recording in some way. My question is, Do I need some additional app? So far it seems I've had nothing but problems with Windows 8, particularly where sound is involved. The sound card, by Realtek, seems useless. The Realtek Manager shows an empty page.

I downloaded Easy-Hi-Q Recorder. It seems to me this is for an analog mic. I had a similar problem with Steinberg Cubase.

Any experience with recording, esp. in Windows 8. I'm about to give up on Windows 8 altogether if things don't work out.

System Specs:
Processor: AMD E1-2500 APO with Radeon (TM) HD
Graphics 1.40 GHz
RAM: 4 gigs
System Type: 64 bit O/S , X64-based processor

Browsers/Mail :: Emailing Resized Digital Images In Windows 8.1

Sep 15, 2014

When I access the dialog box headed "Attach Files" and choose the wording "Smaller 640 x 480", I then click on ATTACH at the foot of the box.

When I go back to the gmail page and choose the resized picture to send as an attachment, the size shown is an enormous size. Why not the reduced size?

I understand that Windows automatically resizes the picture to be sent in an attachment. So why does the picture not appear in its reduced size but in its original size on the gmail page? Is this normal? Will the picture be transmitted in its reduced size or in its original size?

AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard To Add A NTFS Partition To USB Drive

Jul 17, 2014

i'm using Windows 8 Home 64 Bit.

I used AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard to add a NTFS Partition to my USB drive. I want to store large files over 4GB on this partition, while having the rest of my files on the primary partition which is FAT32. The problem is, when I plug my drive into the computer it only shows the primary partition.

Is there any way to get Windows to show both partitions when I plug the device in? I want to be able to store files on both partitions.

After doing some research, I found that one possible way would be to set the USB device as a "Fixed disk". I was unable to figure out how to do this.

The device is a 32GB Silicon Power Blaze Removable Disk with USB 3.0.

Setup Installation :: Migrating / Copying Boot Partition To Another HDD Partition

Jan 30, 2013

I have win 8 pro installed & two HDDs with two partions each , I want to migrate the boot partition to another partition on the second drive .

It would have been easier if i would have just cloned the complete drives but one of the partions on the 2nd drive has data which cannot be deleted .

So I have Drive

1 - Partitions C: ( boot partition ) & D:

Drive 2 - Partitions E: & F:

I want to remove Drive 1 from my PC so i want to copy C: to E: then remove drive 1 & boot from E:

I tried "Easeus todo backup" , did not work, it does not make the copy bootable , to make it bootale the whole drive has to be copied .

I tried making an image of C: using Windows 8 inbuilt backup feature then removed drive 1 , installed Windows 8 on E: then tried restoring the image of C: but i got some error.

Maintenance :: Will Adding Partition Upset The Windows Partition Order

Aug 10, 2014

I would like to add a partition to a drive having the following partitions:

Number Partition Size 1 Windows RE 499 MB 2 EFI System 300 MB 3 MSR 128 MB 4 C: 216 GB 5 Windows RE 450 MB 6 Samsung Image 19 GB 7 Samsung Recovery 1 GB

This should be easy to do with MiniTool Partition Wizard. In essence, resize "C:", add the partition in the unallocated space, assign the drive letter "D" to the new partition, and format it to NTFS.

You will notice that the drive has two Windows RE partitions. This is because I updated to Windows 8.1 from Windows 8 through the Microsoft Store.

I've never used that to move a system partition, are there any issues doing it that way? The only other program I used to use for this kind of Op is paragon partition manager, which the version I have is not compatible with 8.

I don't like doing it this way, it's very slow compared to using the Acronis program, which seems to fly fast.

Creating 2nd Primary Partition From Extended Partition?

Oct 14, 2013

I want to create a second primary partition on my first harddisk(disk 0 look at picture)

from the free space there in the extended partition(view screenshot). Now my problem is that whenever I want to create a new partition by right clicking and selecting "New Simple Volume" and selecting the formatting etc, I get another logical drive in the extended partition(look at picture below).

Is is not what I want. I want to move that free space out from the extended partition and add the unallocated 9 MB to it and then create a second primary partition on disk 0.

Note: If its possible I want to do this without using any third party software, IF POSSIBLE.

Maintenance :: Win 7 Drives In New Win 8 PC?

Aug 6, 2013

My five year old HP Pavilion crashed with virtually no signs of life, although the 2 320GB drives are only 8 months old, and are spinning when startup is attempted. No messages of any kind on the display; I checked the display and it is good. Bought a new HP, but it has Windows 8.

All my backup data is via Norton Ghost 15/Windows 7 and is intact on a 1 TB external Passport drive. I need to figure out how to retrieve this data.

A suggestion was made to just install the old Win 7 hard drive in place of the Win 8 hard drive in the new computer. New computer can't accommodate both old Win 7 hard drives, so I stuck the C: in, it per normal containing the startup and OS files. The computer would not boot from this drive, and delivered an error message to the effect "No bootable disk or drive has failed."

So the question is would there be anything in the BIOS of the new PC which would make it expect to see Win 8?? why it wouldn't boot from this drive? I realize the drive could be bad, but given the age of the drive, it seems unlikely...

Same Files In Two Drives - One Uses 70 GB More?

Jul 17, 2013

I had a Seagate MyBackup 1TB external drive. When it was half full I decided to buy another one, the same Seagate, same model, same 1TB.

So I copied the files to the new one and I do backups every week or so for the changes.

Today I noticed that the old one uses 70GB more than the other.

I mean, 70GB is a lot. I checked the files carefully, it's all my movies. Both are the same capacity, 931 GB. Even same color. The only difference I found is that the newest has 16MB buffer and the old one only 8MB.

Just in case it is relevant, I first used a program called Cobian Backup to make incremental backups and so on, but it was a mess and I uninstalled, formatted the new one and copied the files directly.Maybe Cobian took 70GB of drive #1 and they are now lost in nowhere? I don't detect hidden files, hidden partitions, etc.

Win7 And Win 8 HDs - SWAP OS Across Drives

May 17, 2014

I have Windows 7 on a 120 Gig SSD.

I have Windows 8 on a 150 Gig HDD.

I want to swap the OS's, putting 8 on the SSD, and 7 on the HDD.

So far, I've made Ghost images of both drives, and the system reserved partitions.

I have a boot-able thumbdrive, and multiple ways to make the ghost images available [External HD, Server, large Thumbdrives] so restoring them will not be an issue.

The largest OS uese 89 Gigs, so that is not an issue, and I will redo several installs of software, but that's not important right now.

Are there ANY concerns with doing such a swap?

I'd rather not, but I can change the connections of the SATA cables if I HAD to! The BIOS is pretty advanced, so I don't expect that to be an issue.

Two Windows 8 Hard Drives On Same PC

Sep 4, 2013

I have a pc with 4 drives. And I got a new job, working from home and i wanted to make one of the drives just for work. It was one that i had windows 7 one and no longer used after i bought an ssd an put windows 8 on it. I am really liking 8 and so I put 8 on the second drive that had windows 7 on it.

It all worked fine, but when i tried to have two windows 8 drives on the same pc it made the drives unbootable. I had to re install windows on both drives again. I did some reading and i think its the fast boot feature of windows 8 that's causing the issue. I disabled fast boot on both hard drives. And before I plug them both in at the same time. I want to make sure that im not going to loos all my data again.

How To Separate DVD ROM Drives Into Different Categories

Oct 22, 2013

Consider this screenshot from first page:

I just want to know, is it possible to seperate the DVD-ROM drives into seperate categories like they were in Windows 8 and all other previous versions.

In 8.1, now the DVD-ROM drives appear mixed under the "Devices and Drives" depending on drive letter. I even have an iPhone Browser and Nokia Phone Browser appearing here, both of which have no drive letters. They aren't even drives.

I would like to take these icons out of the Hard Drives into an "Other" category like they were in Windows 7 and 8.

I have a lot of drives and was so used to the position each drive appeared.

Hard Drives Not Partitioned Appropriately

Jul 25, 2013

I purchased an Acer laptop from EBay. It was listed as a refurbished unit. However it looks like it was a complete system wipe and OS replacement. There are no Acer hardware drivers installed and no Acer applications available. My real problem is that the computer has been set up with two hard drives visible in "Computer" a (C drive and "New Volume (D. I believe that when this computer was "refurbished" the installer improperly assigned the drives. In disk management the drives are labeled Disk 0: System reserved 350 MB and New Volume (D 297.75 GB. Disk 1: (C 18.64GB. The C: drive is completely full, with the OS however, it is also the default drive meaning that everything tries to install to that drive, but can't. I want to move the (C drive to the New Volume (D drive or merge the two drives together. Is there a way to perform this task so that the computer will boot up into Windows 8.

Deleted Files Don't Go To Recycle Bin In One Of The Drives

After seeing a couple files permanently delete at unseasonable moments, I now at least enabled deletion confirmation messages. The bug is with the HDD I use for storage, the SSD hosting the OS works according to the recycle bin settings. I tried the classic subterfuge of switching these settings back and forth for both drives, without success though. This is a new installation of 8.1 Pro for me and I think making deletion without confirmation the default behavior was bad move.
