View 2 Repliesnow that windows 8 no longer has safemode or the old F8 menu how do you remove a stubborn virus or malware that after booting attepts to lockout the user and prevent other programs running. back in older versions you could boot into safemode or boot from a bootdisk and cleanup, so now whats the procedure ?

View 9 Replies View RelatedWindows Defender won't update its anti malware definitions... as of now they are a few days old. Manually pressing the "update" button won't do a thing. Also, when trying to update from the cmd prompt, I am told that no update is needed since everything is up-to-date.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI just bought a windows 8.1 Dell laptop and I am having horrible issues with Malware. I have installed a malware removal tool that I pretty much run daily because the issue keeps coming back. I cannot turn on my firewall because it is being controlled by McAfee and I have to purchase it to turn it on, same issue exists with Windows Defender, it has been disabled which really seems ridiculous to me. Basically my browsers are being hijacked to use a different search engine and it opens extra tabs on every load which makes browsing slow.
View 6 Replies View RelatedPrior to last week my computer was running Windows 7, the computer also has a 3TB MyBook external drive on which I ripped over 100 movies from DVD/Blue-Rays that I own (and still have). The reason for doing that was 1) so I could watch the movies on my TV without the hassle of inserting the dvd into the blue-ray player, and (2) reduce the amount of storage space (I threw away the original containers and put them in a simple DVD file).
Last week I installed a new internal hard drive and did a clean install of Windows 8. Consequently my admin account's user name was changed to be the same as my Microsoft live.com account name. Now I can't access any of the folders on MyBook without taking ownership of them one-at-a-time. That is going to be very very time consuming to do that for over 100 folders. Any faster way to accomplish this?
I don't know why Microsoft won't allow computer Administrator to access any folder on his computer. This is just dumb.
The situation gets even worse -- after taking ownership of the folders I still can't access any of the files or sub-folders. I have to do that for every folder and file, somewhere around 500 of them! I feel like just reformatting the drive and starting all over again.
I have used System Restore in Windows 7 to automatically create restore points, but not so in Windows 8 or 8.1. I configured TASKSCHD.MSC for a restore point to be created at 11 pm weekly, but not dice. I just changed the time to create a SR point daily at 7:15 AM to see if a SR point would be created. In Control Panel, there is not record of the SR point, but Task Scheduler says the 7:15 point was completed successfully. However, I can't find it in Control Panel.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI hardly ever turn off my computer, I just put it to sleep. But once a week I turn it off and I did last night. When I turned it on this a.m. My Internet Explorer had AVG secure toolbar and search. I do not want it, I did not ask for it and I cannot remove it.
There should be a law against people putting stuff on your computer that you can't remove. I called Microsoft and they told me I had to pay to get rid of it. I will not, nor can I pay. I'm on Social Security. This is BS.
How to get rid of it. And where did my Microsoft Security Essentials go? Now it's missing from my computer
How can I remove this crap. It got installed with a download and I can't remove it. Uninstall fails, says I must be logged in as administrator.
Is there a way to activate the administrator account in 8.1?

I just don't want to use Windows Media player. It is not even there on my pc I guess.
Still, several of my file associations are showing windows media player as associated with it.
When I go to control panel - default program, and untick associations for wmp, then don't stick. unticking them doesn't work, they reappear the next time.
I also have foobar2000, winamp, vlcplayer installed, I have put default for these programs.
However, all the extensions associated with wmp do not appear in the list of extension for these three programs, so I am not able to set them.
I just don't want to use wmp. I want those extensions to remain unassociated with any program, so that when and if I ever player any file with that extension, windows should ask me how to open that, and then I can select .
How to remove wmp associations from all extensions listed there, even without associating it with another program.
Any way to get rid of Metro appz which come with Win8 directly working with Dism. Also it's possible to restore standard file associations so that pictures open with Image viewer without switching to Metro UI.
Note: c: est contains my offline image.
Code:
dism /image:c: est /Remove-ProvisionedAppxPackage /PackageName:Microsoft.BingFinance_1.2.0.135_x86__8wekyb3d8bbwe
dism /image:c: est /Remove-ProvisionedAppxPackage /PackageName:Microsoft.BingMaps_1.2.0.136_x86__8wekyb3d8bbwe
[Code] .....
To fix associations, save this XML as "AppAssoc.xml":
Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<DefaultAssociations>
<Association Identifier=".bmp" ProgId="PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Bitmap" ApplicationName="Windows Photo Viewer" />
<Association Identifier=".dib" ProgId="PhotoViewer.FileAssoc.Bitmap" ApplicationName="Windows Photo Viewer" />
[Code] .....
And then:
Code:
dism /image:c: est /Remove-DefaultAppAssociations
dism /image:c: est /import-DefaultAppAssociations:C:AppAssoc.xml

What do I use to remove malware from my Windows 8 PC. ?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI posted about my friends computer that kept blue screening. I finally got that fixed and the computer is running good, but he keeps picking up malware.
Today while I was talking on the phone he had the Java Update thing pop up 4 times. Every time he runs Malwarebytes he finds PUPs and removes them but the phony popups etc keep happening.
He is running MSE and Windows Firewall, and he scans with Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware daily. I checked and MSE and the Firewall are shown as running normally.
This all started a month ago when he moved to a new home, prior to that his computer was as clean as mine.
If I disable file and printer sharing for microsoft networks under network and sharing, will it make me safer?

After doing a malwarebytes anti malware test, my computer freezes/crashes every now and then. I'm not sure if its just coincidence but I'm a bit worried.
When the freeze starts nothing is clickable except windows explorer, then when i click on it that freezes as well. If I have a youtube video playing the sound will continue but not the video and sometimes the sound will stop.
Also when it freezes and I press ctrl+alt+delete nothing happens. And sometime after clicking things and it not responding the stuff I clicked will open when the freeze stops.
It it someting to do with my CPU, RAM or hard drive?
I have two hard drives btw. A ssd which has my OS and some games and programs on. And an old 1Tb normal hard drive for more programs, games etc.
My father accidentally fell for the "your media player needs to be updated" and downloaded a ton of malware.
I used this guide: [URL]
And now it is running EXTREMELY slow and it can't load any Windows services on the computer. Any time I try to open a program it just stops responding.
Also while I was doing the malware removal "Safe mode with networking" was working fine. Now in the same "Safe mode with networking" the network isn't working. No internet available.
I am getting an error message "Failed to connect to system event notification center"
All the malware still isn't gone from Chrome but I need to fix this problem first.
When I use Windows Setup.exe and select an ISO file, I get an error message stating An ISO Can't be created/ what is the problem?
View 1 Replies View RelatedBecause I don't want Flash Player Utilities running at startup I have renamed the 2 files that run at startup:
C:WindowsSystem32MacromeFlashUtil_ActiveX.dll
and
C:WindowsSystem32MacromedFlashUJtil_ActiveX.exe
Somehow they got created again. The ones I renamed are still there but somehow the original files are back in the folder again.
I want this disabled! There are no references to this in any of the 'Run' registry entries and I don't see a Service for this either. How to prevent this annoying piece of garbage from recurring?
I use an internal data drive for most of my data. In win 8 the drive is E and I've created several folders and populated them with data. I then rebooted my machine to a Win 7 pro system and added a folder and some data to the E drive. No issues.
When I go back to Win 8 i can't see the folder and files I created on the E drive from Win 7.
I haven't gone back to Win 7 yet to see if they are there, but I would be willing to bet that I will see them in Win 7. How do I resolve?
