View 9 Replies View RelatedFirewall settings. I have a clue about firewall "rules" and basically have to be directed. The only time I really messed with any firewall settings was YEARS ago when I was running the Look-n-Stop firewall and looking for safest, yet workable settings. I passed all firewall tests I put it thru but I had no connectivity issues at all, it was perfect. Windows 8 firewall.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running windows 8.1 on my asus x550 laptop, the issue is windows firewall can't be turned off, and when it is on it blocks everything including the browsers and also kaspersky antivirus 2014.
I use tiny wall instead of the default firewall, the problem is when I turn off the windows firewall, it switches off ,but comes back on automatically in about 2 mins and blocks all internet access again. So I decided to manually disable the service from, local services that doesn't work either,it says if I do that even tiny firewall will go off.
My incoming connections is set to "block all connections to apps that are not on the list of allowed apps" why isn't there an entry for Mozilla Firefox on that list, it isn't blocked.
Also, I installed a VST plugin (software music synthesizer) and the first thing it did was check for updates (it phoned home), why wasn't that automatically blocked until I explicitly added a firewall exception? I don't get it.
My firewall doesn't start anymore. The problem started after removing the damn iStartSurf (virus or whatever threat that is). I used adwcleaner_3.310.exe ( What is adwcleaner_3.310.exe ? | System Explorer ) that is the one that, I suppose, really removed the problem and then Malwarebytes Anti-Malware just in case. This last didn't find anything as I was expecting. (these steps are part of a guide for removing iStartSurf)
After rebooting, because adwcleaner finished its task, installing the anti-malware, while scanning with the latter I saw (not sure it wasn't already there since the log in) the control center complaining about the firewall off. I thought because of the scanning. At the end of the scan I couldn't turn the firewall on anyway.
I have followed a lot of guides and used different "fixing tools"... but nothing.
My Configuration:
windows 8.1
Avira antivir
standard windows firewall
removed malwarebytes
removed adwcleaner
Error reported:
- If I try to start the firewall from servises.msc it give me the error code 13
- If I try to open the advanced settings of the firewall from the control panel I get the error code 0x6D9

But when I'm at home the videos and music play to my xbox with out a hitch. Now this didn't start until I decided to try and change something firewall related. My problem is, I don't remember what I changed with these settings.
I had to uninstall McAfee control over Windows 8.1 firewall, because the Apple Mobile Device Support program kept rolling back !!
View 5 Replies View RelatedWhether or not it is possible to turn the Windows Firewall completely off, so that it does not turn itself on, whenever I join a new public network?
I have tried the following command in the command prompt: "netsh advfirewall set allprofiles state off", which should do the trick, but doesn't. It was run in administrator mode, so that's not the problem.
The reason that I need this done is, that I play as a DJ using Rekordbox connected to the mixer, through an ethernet cable. Now, for some reason my computer identifies this as a public network, every time I connect the 2 devices and then turns on the Windows Firewall (which blocks the computer and mixer from communicating, which is BAD!).
Every time it activates itself, I have to go into the control panel and turn it back off, which is sort of tedious...
I do have my own antivirus and firewall software installed, so I need the Windows part completely off.
Following a recent Windows Update, Windows Firewall on my Windows 8 system was disabled. Upon attempting to start the firewall through the services.msc dialog, I receive an error code 1068, informing that the dependency service or group failed to start. After doing some googling to attempt to resolve the issue I found the dependency service, the Base Filtering Engine (BFE) was not active. When attempting to start the BFE service, I am stopped with an error 5, indicating that access is denied.
I am unable to figure out why access to the BFE service should be denied, since this account is the only account on the computer and has administrator privileges. Because of these issues with the firewall, I am unable to access the internet and am creating this thread through a separate laptop computer.
In a potentially related issue, Windows is not "activated", though I had activated it approximately a year earlier. Because of this, I am unable to access my Microsoft Office programs. I believe that I am unable to activate windows due to a lack of internet connectivity caused by the above firewall issue.
My next step is to take the computer into a nearby service depot and pay the requisite charges.
I just bought a windows 8.1 Dell laptop and I am having horrible issues with Malware. I have installed a malware removal tool that I pretty much run daily because the issue keeps coming back. I cannot turn on my firewall because it is being controlled by McAfee and I have to purchase it to turn it on, same issue exists with Windows Defender, it has been disabled which really seems ridiculous to me. Basically my browsers are being hijacked to use a different search engine and it opens extra tabs on every load which makes browsing slow.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIt's not just your everyday slowness. I accidentally dropped my computer, not too violently or anything, and now it's having extreme lag.
Even before you boot, it takes about 3 minutes just to wait for the safemode options screen after hitting F8. So far, it's taken 20 to actually load the files and start safemode.
The only thing I can think would be causing this is the RAM cards were damaged? Or it might also be a softwear issue - I was running a high memory video game when it fell and shut off.

If I disable file and printer sharing for microsoft networks under network and sharing, will it make me safer?

I'm just messing around with some configurations, at the moment with the aim of increasing productivity on my Win 8 laptop. I just scheduled a shutdown task, to be run every night and in the process I was wondering if there's anyway to prevent either:
Your computer from starting before a certain time or the operating system from logging you in before a certain time.
As an example, say I wanted to limit access to my computer before 9am how could you go about this?
When I shut down my computer, I get this thing that a program is preventing shutdown. It doesn't tell what's the name of the program, it only says that "This program is preventing shutdown".
Can any hacker see my webcam or my pictures without putting any malware or virus to my computer and without me doing anything so they can see me?
My computer is HP Pavilion 15 with Windows 8.1.
I just had a BSOD for the first time, it occurred during a shutdown. A program was preventing the shutdown, but I couldn't tell what it was (was trying to go to sleep). It occurred after encountering some weird problems. First after playing Mass Effect 3, my Ethernet port was somehow disabled, and I couldn't connect to the internet. Then I decided to play some insurgency, then insurgency crashed. I had to close it via task manager along with steam. After that I decide to shutdown my computer, it was taking long, and then it BSOD.
Afterwards I ran a sfc scan, and it came up saying something like it found some corrupt files but couldn't fix them all
I fixed the ethernet port problem, by re-enabling it (I was still able to connect to the internet via WiFi). Also ran a virus scan with Mcafee nothing showed up.

I've noticed that even though I didn't run 'Reader' it's running and in Task Manager. At times I also see 'Store' running when I haven't run it. Any way to prevent unwanted apps from running?? I'm well aware of how to close them.
View 6 Replies View RelatedJust today, my desktop's been unable to boot into the login screen on Windows 8.1 due to a blue screen that appears for a split second, and forced the PC to restart. Some of this, I think, should be surely linked to the GPU, as it's left me with a black screen and loud fan noise about three of four times today. Each time I've restarted the PC, it's been able to to get back into Windows, though this time it's just giving me a BSOD that I can barely see at all.
What I'm wanting to know is how can I get it to show me the information for me to diagnose it. Could I use a shortcut on the keyboard, or will the information be saved somewhere?
The GPU I have is the XFX 7950 Core Edition.
I'm using the latest version of FF in Win 8 64-bit. I have the FF pop-up blocker enabled and also the ad-block extension. But I'm still getting these annoying pop-ups that slide in from the sides or top or bottom of the screen and hover, asking for opinions or ratings.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm always using a mouse... so I keep my touchpad disabled with the hotkeys so I can type and work without the risk of pressing touchpad.
But each time I logon, or bring my pc back from sleep, windows turns my touchpad back on... this is really frustrating.
Is there a way to prevent windows 8 to turn my touchpad on each time I login? My notebook is a lenovo b590.
Okay now I have an issue with windows, namely secureboot and UEFI. HP Pavilion laptop that came preinstalled with windows 8.1 but didnt like it and wanted a dual boot.
So I gave him Ubuntu 13.10 as it has UEFI support and everything was fine until we updated to Ubuntu 14.04. Sadly it did not load windows via grub and windows would fail to boot.
However after repairing the windows boot manager I knew I had to reinstall linux which would normally be fine but now windows and windows alone now boots, no grub, no nothing.
I heard recently of this story: [URL] ....
However I checked everything and windows seems to be the cause of my woes. As does UEFI. Now we would like to keep windows on this machine however I am thinking of removing the /efi partition
Will windows 8 still work if I do this?
In Windows 7 I used to be able to right click on a file and one of my choices was to scan with Microsoft security essentials, but that's no longer in my right click menu.
How do I go about doing a manual scan on just one file using Microsoft's (I guess it's now Defender) Security Essentials in Windows 8?
I can't turn on the Windows Firewall.
I looked online and this seems to be a common Windows 8 problem but I didn't find any good answers.
I'm not ready to run refresh yet.
Windows Defender is up and running and I'm using Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware every day.
I have a new HP DV6 with windows 8 and it has originally Norton internet security for 60 days
I am having 2 notifications in the action center one of them is network firewall and when I click on it it shows that I have to turn either the norton internet security or the windows defender on and when I click on norton it ask me if I trust the publisher and I click yes and then nothing happen and the notification keeps on showing. I tried to restart and update my laptop several times and nothing happens I keep on seeing this message
How can the action center tell me I am not protected while at the same time Norton tells me I am?
