Windows 8.1 - Deleting User Created Lock Screen Images
May 3, 2014I've just bought a new laptop with Windows 8.1 and have been playing around with the settings etc. and have a question regarding the Lock screen.
I have personalised the lock screen with my own picture but have decided that I don't like it and would just prefer to use one of the default pictures, but there doesn't seem to be anyway of deleting the picture I have added.
I've tried searching for the picture on the laptop but have had no success finding it. How delete this picture?
Cannot Boot Toshiba Laptop Windows 8.1 / Created Duplicate EFI Partition
Dec 25, 2013I can not boot my Toshiba laptop Windows 8.1 computer after I was attempting to resize partitions. I got in over my head. Now I'm stuck and cannot boot.
I believe the problem is I somehow created a second copy of my EFI partition. Now I have two "system" partitions of the same size.
Cannot boot, but got a command prompt. Ran "bcdedit" and got:
"The boot configuration data store could not be opened.The requested system device cannot be identified due to multiple indistinguishable devices potentially matching the identification criteria."
Other things I uncovered:
Diskpart> list partition
Partition 1 System
Partition 2 System
Partition 3 Reserved
Partition 4 Primary
Partition 5 Recovery
Partition 6 Recovery
(note both partitons 1 & 2 say "System" for type.)
Diskpart> Select Partition 1detail partition * Volume 2 System NTFS Partition 352 MB Healthy Hidden
Diskpart> Select Partition 2detail partition * Volume 3 FAT32 Partition 352 MB Healthy Hidden
I conclude that Partition 1 equates to Volume 2, Partition 2 to Volume 3. However there is no longer a "System" label on Part 2/Vol 3 once drilled down to details. Also its FAT32.
I am hoping/praying that I could "delete" one of the duplicate partitions. But scared to make any such move. Not sure where to go from here.
Maintenance :: Windows 8 - Enable Restore Paints To Be Created Automatically?

services. msc not enabled
2-task scheduler off.
I cannot find system restore or restore points in either place and am not sure what to do in either. How to enable restore paints to be created automatically?

Jan 14, 2013Windows 8 creates its own hidden recovery partition during the install. In my case, it's 450MB.
I know not to touch this partition, and I'd like to know what's in that partition and how it's used.

Jun 26, 2014I have a new Dell laptop with Windows 8.1 - I work from home & connect to the internet via my home wifi network. The problem I have been experiencing is that my laptop connects to the internet at boot up but then disconnects for several minutes & then re-connects again. This coincides with the Network & Sharing Centre showing a number of Local Area Connections (numbered 3,4,5,6 etc) being created under Unidentified Public Networks. I have tried disabling the LAC's but they re-enable whenever I re-boot & I have the same issues again. My networking knowledge is very limited so how to rectify this issue.

Jul 22, 2013Because I don't want Flash Player Utilities running at startup I have renamed the 2 files that run at startup:
C:WindowsSystem32MacromeFlashUtil_ActiveX.dll
and
C:WindowsSystem32MacromedFlashUJtil_ActiveX.exe
Somehow they got created again. The ones I renamed are still there but somehow the original files are back in the folder again.
I want this disabled! There are no references to this in any of the 'Run' registry entries and I don't see a Service for this either. How to prevent this annoying piece of garbage from recurring?
Files Created On Win 7 Data Drive Not Seen On Win 8
Apr 12, 2013I use an internal data drive for most of my data. In win 8 the drive is E and I've created several folders and populated them with data. I then rebooted my machine to a Win 7 pro system and added a folder and some data to the E drive. No issues.
When I go back to Win 8 i can't see the folder and files I created on the E drive from Win 7.
I haven't gone back to Win 7 yet to see if they are there, but I would be willing to bet that I will see them in Win 7. How do I resolve?

This I am unable to set as when i tried by going to pc setting-- network-- connection-- wifi connected, there I do not see option of "Find devices and content" to put it on. Apr 2, 2014Before upgrading I had 4 partitions for my UEFI Windows 8 install, the main partition for the system, and the three others it created during install. After upgrading to Windows 8.1 it has reduced the main Windows partition by 472MB and created a new 472MB recovery partition.
I have not yet run any Windows 8.1 updates as the drivers for my laptop are tricky and to make everything work as it should I need to install them before running updates. What I have run is Disk Cleanup, which I had remove the old Windows install.
Is it normal for Windows 8.1 upgrade to create this new recovery partition and is it going to delete it or the old recovery partition and merge it with the main Windows 8.1 partition?
Security :: How To Let Admin Access Folders Created By Another User
Jul 12, 2013Prior to last week my computer was running Windows 7, the computer also has a 3TB MyBook external drive on which I ripped over 100 movies from DVD/Blue-Rays that I own (and still have). The reason for doing that was 1) so I could watch the movies on my TV without the hassle of inserting the dvd into the blue-ray player, and (2) reduce the amount of storage space (I threw away the original containers and put them in a simple DVD file).
Last week I installed a new internal hard drive and did a clean install of Windows 8. Consequently my admin account's user name was changed to be the same as my Microsoft live.com account name. Now I can't access any of the folders on MyBook without taking ownership of them one-at-a-time. That is going to be very very time consuming to do that for over 100 folders. Any faster way to accomplish this?
I don't know why Microsoft won't allow computer Administrator to access any folder on his computer. This is just dumb.
The situation gets even worse -- after taking ownership of the folders I still can't access any of the files or sub-folders. I have to do that for every folder and file, somewhere around 500 of them! I feel like just reformatting the drive and starting all over again.
Security :: Auto System Restore Points Not Created?
Dec 14, 2013I have used System Restore in Windows 7 to automatically create restore points, but not so in Windows 8 or 8.1. I configured TASKSCHD.MSC for a restore point to be created at 11 pm weekly, but not dice. I just changed the time to create a SR point daily at 7:15 AM to see if a SR point would be created. In Control Panel, there is not record of the SR point, but Task Scheduler says the 7:15 point was completed successfully. However, I can't find it in Control Panel.

Mar 24, 2013I am running a cleanly installed standalone Windows 8 Pro X64 system which is not creating system restore points for updates, installations, and Revo Uninstaller uninstalls (despite the requisite setting being on in Revo).
I have being doing quite a bit of installation and updating over the past week or so but apart from one manually created restore point the only other was for an installation of Power DVD yesterday.
It seems MS is sitting on its hands on this one.
Accounts :: Unable To Sign Into Any Newly Created User Account
Oct 24, 2013Updated to 8.1, created a couple of users accounts - but unable to sign into these accounts. Clicking to sign in, simply shows (a few seconds later) - 'Signing out'. No errors or similar reported and nothing obvious in the Event Log of the Admin user.
Have tried a variety of accounts - with passwords, without, child accounts, etc - same result.
Any accounts existing prior to 8.1 seem to work okay.
Safety Scanner and SFC check found no problems. A bit more testing found that if I create a new Administrator user, then this user can be logged onto and works fine. Whereas the Standard or Child accounts still won't logon. Accounts created using a pre-existing 2nd Administrator user (i.e. pre 8.1) show the same behaviour.
Logged on as Admin1 (my account).
Created W-user2 (child user) - unable to logon
Created test-user (std user) - unable to logon
Created test-21-1 (std user - created 21/10/13 after sfc check) - unable to logon
Created Admin3 (admin user) - Logon successful
Logged on as Admin2 (pre-existing 2nd Admin account)
Created standard2 (std user) - unable to logon
Created child2 (child user) - unable to logon
Created Admin4 (admin user) - Logon successful
So, it looks like only new Admin users can logon. A pre-existing Standard user account can still logon (as before).
Apps / Software :: Upgraded To Win 8.1 - No Tile Created On Start Screen When Install New App
Dec 14, 2013Just upgraded to 8.1 this weekend. Whenever I install a new app from the Store, it says it's installed, and I can search for it and play it, but it does NOT create a tile for the new app on my Start screen??
I can search for it, then right-click on it, and click on "Pin to Start" and it creates a tile on my Start screen, but I want it to create a new tile by default when I install an app, and it has stopped doing that!!!!

Feb 8, 2013When Windows 8 menu appears on start and I choose W7 - instead of loading W7directly , the computer is new-starting again and only than starts w7. That's a funny "behaviour"....
Also, after starting the computer, the menu is not directly shown up, first is this turning wi8 circle (like in the setup) and only about 30 sec. later comes the menu. I am using windows 8 enterprise, test version.

May 6, 2013Have a question regarding "Local Account". I'm having problems connecting to the Win 8 laptop from Win 7 as it will not accept my sign in credentials. With that, am I to assume that this is because the credential aren't "Local", and thus this is what this is for???
It will not accept the "Microsoft" account I use to log into Win 8 laptop.
With that, if I choose to go with the "local account" can I easily switch back to the Microsoft one?

I have a folder with all my old outlook express emails in it but it is not compatible with outlook and I NEED an email in the old outlook express file. How the heck can I get this? Jul 2, 2013In a few days I will receive a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon with Windows 8 installed. And separately I will receive an OEM Win7. Win7 is certainly what I intend to use, and I had originally thought I would wipe out Windows 8 and install Win7. But now I am wondering if I can somehow preserve Windows 8 for occasional use. (I would have ordered the machine with Win7 but this is a refurbished machine.)
I would rather not have to understand UEFI. (I'm sure it would be interesting, I just have other things to do with my time.) And, although I do it sometimes, and will if I have to, I do not like diddling with BIOS settings.
I know that factory installed operating systems generally can't be moved to other machines. And I fear that the factory installed Windows 8 that I will receive may not even tolerate being installed, e.g., in a smaller partition or under something like VMware (another complication I'd like to avoid).

Aug 3, 2014I have a Samsung Series 5, 530U (the remaining digits I don't recall right now).
I purchased it from a digital superstore, like a market, rather than a regular PC store.
The device is set for Windows 7, although on purchase, I asked for Windows 8 to be installed.
Now, a BSOD has stopped me gaining access through refreshing, restarting, safe mode or any of the options available through the troubleshooting menu.
I retrieved my data using a SATA, and now wish to wipe the system of Windows 8, and avoid all the hassle it has brought me, returning to it's factory settings of W7.
I do not have a disk, or anything to do so. When I go through the menu on start-up, I click 'restore system' but I am then prompted for 'recovery mdeia or installation disk'.
Is it possible to just reset the whole PC and start from the day it left the factory?
If I need a disk to reset the original settings, where can I get it from and would simply loading it when prompted fix my problem?
All I want is to be able to use my own PC. I want Windows 8 cleared off and a reliable, original settings PC.

Mar 21, 2014I have 3 user accounts on my windows 8.1 laptop; 2 administrator types and 1 standard local account. While logged in using one of the admin user accounts or the local account, I can access the store app. However, when i log in using the other administrator account and try to access the store app, i just get the spinning circle and nothing happens. Is there something wrong with how one user account is set up that is causing the problem. Do I have to delete the user account and try re-establishing it.
