View 1 RepliesMy previous experience with Win8 has been as an upgrade from Win7 now I just tried a fresh install and ran into this problem. I have a number of old WAV files that I have used for specific "sound events" in Windows since Win95. I have always copied these WAV files in the windows/media folder and was able to assign the sound file to the sound event using CP:SOUND. This no longer is true. The WAV files do not play.
Win8 refuses to use WAV files which are not from a "TRUSTEDINSTALLER". So even though the WAV files I want to use are in the same folder as the ones included with Win8, I cannot use them to customize my sound theme.
Importing to Win8 the "AppEvents" reg keys from a Win7 to Win8 installation does not work. This is strange because if you upgrade from a Win7 installation with the customized sound events to a Win8 installation, Win8 will accept the customized WAV files even though they are not tagged "TRUSTEDINSTALLER". BTW, copying the WAV files from the upgraded Win7 -> Win8 to a clean Win8 installation does not resolve the problem.
The only solution that would seem to work is to change the security tags on my customized WAV files to include "TRUSTEDINSTALLER" but I haven't found anyway of doing this.
Do you use the built-in Windows Optimize Drivers (Disk Defrag) or do you use a third party product?
If third party product, which product and why?
I was playing an online game when suddenly I've got a runtime error which froze the screen. I had to push the power button and my laptop restarted, slowly than usually but otherwise O.K. However, when I tried to do the maintenance using the Optimize tool this is what I see now:
The "volumes" (for the lack of a better word) Push Button Reset and ?Volume{9789f0... that have never been showing before are showing now and when I try to force a manual optimization the window just blinks but doesn't do anything. I've had the optimization set to "weekly" but after that I and it changed to "daily" for at least 3 days now but this didn't solve the problem. Highlighting and right-clicking doesn't work.
My SSD (Intel 60GB) was becoming too small to hold my Windows 8 system partition so I found another use for that SSD and went back to HDD. I transferred whole SSD to HDD with Paragon Backup & Recovery 2013 free, and now the system gladly boots from HDD.
But Windows 8 is somehow still thinking that they are running on SSD. For example "Optimize Drives" (Ex Windows Defragmenter) shows "Solid State Drive" as media type and probably because it can't access TRIM functions, it is unable to defragment the drive, so it is yelling that "Optimization is not available":
How do I convince Windows 8 that they are running from HDD again?
I have tried to remove this disk from "Disk Drives" in Device Manager, also I removed/reinstalled everything under "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers" and "Storage controllers" without any success.
just wondering if it normal for the documents folder to be inside the pictures folder.
using windows 8.1 and can i change the location of the folder? just asking.
I have a folder called C:8e2766e5fa559c32dee2f00483e114 that contains a file called MPSigStub.exe. I can't delete it even though I've look at the 'take ownership' tutorials. Keep on getting '....require permission from IAIN-PCIain to make changes' error.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI cannot edit a folder when I've used "Take Ownership" and I've made sure in the Security tab that I have full control, I still get "You need permission to preform this action" when trying to move stuff in the folder. What could be wrong?

View 9 Replies View RelatedIn the process of setting up my new computer with an SSD and HDD, I managed to delete the pictures folder. I got it back, but now when I click on the Pictures folder inside the libraries folder, all the data in my HDD comes up. Whatever I did, I somehow made my D: drive to the format of my pictures folder.
View 6 Replies View Relatedhaving ordered a new sound card and speaker set, I've been thinking of gradually upgrading my MP3 collection to FLAC. I also still have a Zune HD, which I wasn't planning on replacing, which doesn't play FLAC. To this end I'd keep a MP3 copy of the flac collection for Zune to sync to the HD.
Now the problem: Windows media player and Zune both look in the same folder for their media library!! So I can't tell WMP to look at the FLAC while having Zune look at the MP3 using the standard music library in windows... Is there a way to have either program look at a different folder than the standard library?
How do I access app data folder in 8.1. I cant find it. I need to manually remove some folders hiding in there containing, amongst other things, snap do bug.???? I used to check it regularly in 7, but cant find it in 8 and now 8.1. Spy Hunter 4 is finding these things but says deleted then next check they are back again.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to move a rar folder to MyGames folder and it's having none of it.. It just seems to be my MyGames folder and no other folders on my PC.
I am currently using Windows 8.1 is there a problem or a glitch with this? I currently have McAfee installed could this be apart of moving folders, copying folders to another folder?
I have checked all my permissions etc in the MyGames folder and they seem to be fine. I am trying to move folder to my Farming Simulator 2013 folder and it's not doing anything not even popping up with any kind of warning why my folder isn't copying, pasting correctly.
I use Mozbackup for firefox, and it creates a pcv file. The problem is I can put it in documents folder in skydrive folder, but when I need to download it from skydrive, skydrive flags it as a possible virus and stops the download. Is there a way I can set skydrive not to do this to a pcv file?.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've got a laptop with two NTFS partitions on it; one for Windows 8, and another for storage of random things. Both are NTFS-formatted, and they're on a basic disk.
The problem is: When I open the "Computer" window, it only shows me the C: drive that I'm running Windows from. Other things are there... the DVD-RW, network folders, other computers on the net, etc. But the H: drive (the other NTFS partition I use for random storage) isn't there. HOWEVER..... if I go up to the address bar and type in "H:" and hit <Enter>, it takes me to that drive, and the H: drive suddenly appears in the folder-pane on the left of the window.
It does the same thing for any USB drives I plug in. I can type their drive letters into the address bar, and then it'll take me to that drive and it's icon will show up in the left-hand folder pane. But then, when I navigate away from that drive, it disappears again.
It's like Windows is hiding them from me unless I know the address, kinda like how putting "$" at the end of a shared folder name does it with network shares.
The option - hide extension for known file type change itself to unticked after I ticked the box and click ok.

Redirect a folder to a new location
I need the default my documents folder to be on a different drive, I know I can "add another location" for the library, but when programs automatically use "My Documents" they still go into the C: instead of being they would be directed to the D: because of the above procedure in the link.
Trying to delete an unshared folder and it is used by another program. how can I find out in which program it is open in?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI've had this error for some time wherein I would try to open my documents folder and I get this message every time: 'C:UsersMeDocuments is not accessible. The file name, directory name, and volume label syntax is incorrect.' I also noticed that nothing was inside the folder at all, as I've checked its properties.
However, it seems that all those original files in the documents folder along with the folder itself seemed to have been moved to a different directory, as I managed to open it from my desktop in the windows explorer. It only appears from there too, as I've checked my libraries and no documents folder existing as well.
The only time It did open was when I tried creating a shortcut of that inaccessible folder onto my desktop and opening it from there. It's bothering me because I can't seem to install anything properly without a message telling me that it can't access my documents files or that it can't find the directory, etc.
I have Windows 8.1 fully updated, I need a folder and the files in it to be writeable, when I go to folder/properties the attributes/Read Only have a square dot in the box, when I take the dot out and apply, a short file is run then I close the folder and go to folder/properties again and the square dot in the box is there again.
I try to click on the box and change to a tick, apply then take the tick out and apply I still get the square dot in the box when I go to folder/properties.
It doesn't matter what I do the program I am installing want writable and will not install properly.
How do I make a folder and the files in it fully writable?
When I go into Properties/Location of the Public Videos folder it says I can "change where the files are stored in this folder" however I cannot type a new location into the dialogue box. I am in signed in as administrator.
View 3 Replies View RelatedFew days ago a friend showed me a great OSx functionality - Smart Folders. Basically it is a "virtual" folder, does not really contains files but rather an active search folder.
Let say you want to have a place that will display only word/text documents created within last 5 days, or only doc files.... regardless of where they really are.
Can you get such functionality in Windows? I know "search" pretty good but using it instead of set folder, means we have to perform search every time we want to display files we look for.
Windows 8 is advanced OS, but still we cannot add tags to the folder. The folders are searched by the name, but what if you want that if you type "office" then all the folder with the office related files and folders should pop up.
For example if my folder name is "minutes of meeting" then in order to make it searchable when I type "office" or "HR" I should name it like this : "minutes of meeting 10/7/2013 office HR department"
But isn't it insane? If I want to mail this folder using zip, I have to rename the folder name again. But in tag based system, you can search it with tags and the name remains the same.
Dont tell me you can search using the filters. I know it. But can we install a software that can adds tags to any folder or file and make it searchable too? Such a simple feature is lacking the windows 8.
What is the purpose of the OneDrive Folder under C:UserMynameOneDrive? I know I can save files directly to OneDrive (in the cloud) or I can move/copy stuff to the OneDrive in the cloud. OneDrive then Syncs the cloud stuff to the User OneDrive folder. What's the point? Just a backup or does Windows 8.1 use the Synced information on the local machine (C:UserMynameOneDrive) to speed up processing and then Sync it back to the Cloud? I think I like it but just want to understand what is going on. Is there a "white" paper or something that explains in a little more detail, some link. Also, does it then make sense to include the OneDrive folder in the Library so that it gets backed up using Windows 8.1's File History function?

I want to alphabetize all of the items within this folder but the best I can do is have it show me all the folders in alphabetical order and then all the files will begin and be shown in alphabetical order. What I am looking for is to have all the files and folders intertwined in alphabetical order and not folders and then files.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have ten folders in my Pictures library all full of pictures, and they get cycled on the Live tile for the Photos app, and also show up under "Pictures" once you've opened the Photos app.

I am a long time user of XP and in the past year have taken the plunge into 8. Whenever I delete a folder in XP, if that folder is open in an explorer window, the window automatically closes. When I delete a folder that has a window open in 8, the window simply navigates to the default explorer location. When I an doing folder maintenance, I am basically ending up with a whole bunch of open windows.
Any setting I can change to make the window of a deleted folder close automatically?
Within the document libraries there appear to be a number of default folders For Example
PICTURES
My Pictures
Public Pictures
Whilst transferring all my picture files across from my old laptop I seem to have deleted the public pictures folder within my personal library. After a bid of searching around I have found the Public Pictures folder under the "public" area of the C: directory. It appears to only be missing only in my profile account (other profiles are also unaffected).
My question is how do I restore this folder? If I copy and paste the source public pictures folder I appear to be making a complete copy, rather than a shortcut type link to the files.
How can I keep folder settings after I close window or switch to a new folder. Such as "Size All Columns to Fit"?

I have three Autohotkey exe files in my appdata Startup folder of my laptop but they do not get started when Windows starts. Those same three files on my desktop in the same place start and run just fine. Each machine has the same version of Windows 8, Home Premium 64 build 9200.
If I open the Startup folder and click on any one of the files they start and run just fine.
In the registry for the desktop those three files appear in startup folder but not in laptop. Am almost sure that is the problem but don't have a clue what to do about it.
On both machines, Yankee Clipper III runs at start without me having to put it in either of my appdata Startup folders. I guess the installer took care of it for me.
