Installation Errors Caused By SATA?

Jun 23, 2008

I have been trying to dual boot my Vista Ultimate system and XP, the problem I run into is that once I get the XP partition, put in the XP boot disc and restart the system the XP install starts. It loads the drivers that it needs for the install but then I get the blue screen saying that windows has shut down to protect the computer. I do have a SATA drive and I've heard this causes issues but I haven't heard of one exactly like mine before (I never get to the actual installation just the pre-loading).

Installation Of On MOBO / SATA Drive

Oct 4, 2009

Independent Dual Boot capabilities on two separate & independent drives, one on the MOBO EIDE controller the other on the VIA SATA RAID Controller on the same MOBO. I am attempting a clean installation of Windows XP on the SATA Drive but the system fails to recognize even the presence of the drive. This, even after stripping the system of all drives except this one, and after 'prepping' it to be bootable with MAXTOR prep. tools. Was there ever a restriction on putting an O/S on SATA drives even on the MOBO? I have all the updates installed, "I think".

Can't Get Installation To Find Sata Hard Drive

Oct 8, 2006

I'm can't get WinXP installation to find my Sata Hard-drive. I'm running Suse Linux on my IDE-HD and I could also had no problems getting my Suse 10.1 installation to install on the SATA-HD. I've booted up with winxp media install disk and tried to use the F6 key at the right time but nothing happens so it keeps going until I get to the point where I can press the S key to install SATA RAID driver from disk that came with my motherboard. The drivers install but then windows install still says no disk to install windows... I don't get it.

I've checked my bios and SATA in there, in fact the first thing I see when I boot up in the boot sequence is the SATA drive. Linux knows it's there but windows install doesn't. I installed XP on a WD SATA drive before and all I had to do was press F6 to install the controller from the XP disk but that doesn't work now.

Go Back Home Installation After Vista - Would Disable Sata Native Mode

Aug 9, 2007

Isn't the problem going from vista back to xp an sata driver problem? If you would disable sata native mode then boot from the xp cd it should show the hard drive and any partitions. The biggest chore may be getting the drivers needed for XP and if is a laptop they rarely come with a floppy drive, so during the xp install I don't know if after you press F6 if you can remove the xp cd and put in a cd that you burned the needed drivers to if a floppy is not available. People should have the freedom to choose whatever operating system they want without all of the headaches

Installation Operating System - Disc Fails To Recognize SATA Hard Drives

Aug 5, 2009

I've got this old mobo Abit VT7. I want to install XP on it. However, the XP disc doesn't recognize SATA hard drives. So I downloaded official SATA driver from the Abit website http://tinyurl.com/kua5qz and tries to slipstream my XP disc following the instructions set forth here http://tinyurl.com/37anvn . I am not too clear how to incorporate the drivers from the official drivers, but Nlite seems to be able to find the drivers once I pointed it to the top unzipped driver directory, and I selected the XP folder for it. However, the newly created XP disc still fails to recognize the SATA hard drives. Alternatively, I believe I could have a boot floppy which would load the drivers in, then I launch the setup in the XP installation CD via command line. But I don't know how to create a boot disc which has those SATA drivers in.

Winlogon.exe And Svchost.exe Errors After SP2 Installation

Feb 23, 2008

When I startup my computer, it gets to the XP login screen and then winlogon.exe errors. I don't know the exact error code, I didn't copy it down, but svchost.exe also errors twice, and the first code is 0x0000d0005 I believe.

This happened straight after I installed XP Service Pack 2 directly from microsoft's website.

I have a feeling something to do with my wireless card installation caused it. The thing is, Netgear install a custom msgina.dll (for reasons unknown to me) and I actually replaced my msgina.dll with a different one a few months ago as I didn't like having to click on task manager when i pressed CTRL+ALT+DEL, which is what happened with the netgear msgina.

Anyhow, what I've currently tried is using my XP installation CD and going to the recovery console and then doing this:

copy msgina.dll msginabackup.dll
copy E:I386MSGINA.DL_ msgina.dll

So replacing my msgina.dll with a backed up version. This doesn't solve the problem, however if I do the same for winlogon.exe and use both the backed up msgina and the backed up winlogon, I don't get a winlogon.exe error anymore. But, I still get the two svchost.exe errors and when I click to login, it says "loading your personal settings" and then goes back to the default loading screen, so I click to login, it says "loading your personal settings" and then goes back again etc.

I have a feeling there might just be a file or two extra that I need to restore from backup copies, but I have no idea which they'd be. I'm an intermediate-expert PC user but I don't really dabble with system files so I'm all out of ideas for what could be wrong, which is why I'm posting here.

OS Installation - Blue Screen Fatal Errors

Sep 23, 2006

I recently built a new computer and it has been just an incredible load of troubles ever since the first boot up. I first installed Windows 2000 so I can actually boot up my computer then upgraded to Windows XP SP2. After this I had a messload of trouble getting errors during the XP installation which I believe were various fonts. Skipping over this the installation was successful and I was enjoying Windows XP. Now I did the automatic updates that is recommanded and let then download and install. Once they installed and the system rebooted, I never got to enjoy my computer.

After the restart the computer would hang where the log in screen should be then restart and do this over and over again. I thought this was an installation problem so I reinstalled 2000 so I could just reformat and fix the problem. Now my computer is rejecting every time I try to reformat and reinstall 2000 giving me various blue screen fatal errors and errors during the Windows 2000 setup preventing the installation from going any further..............

So naturaly, I'm really iritated right about now.The first one was caused by tdi.sys and after lots of googling, I downloaded the debugging tool and opened my first ever minidump. I did and that BSOD didn't happen again. I was soooo happy.

System Crash Caused By VSS2k

May 6, 2008

My computer running windows XP has been periodically crashing (~ 1 per month). The event viewer indicates a system error category (102) with event ID 1003. The Error code is as follows: 100000d1, parameter1 00000000, parameter2 0000001c, parameter3 00000001, parameter4 ba0a9182. I have tried to analyze the minidump files using the windows debugger tool. It indicates that the error is probably caused by vss2k.sys ( vss2k+6182) and attributes it to a driver_fault. I really have not been able to decipher much more than that.

Updates Caused Reboot Loop

Jul 6, 2010

So I downloaded some Windows (XP SP2) updates as usual on my Dell Dimension C521 Desktop, and after being nagged every 10 minutes to restart the computer, I finally gave in. You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM.Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair. I tried the Recovery Console as suggested, but it wouldn't let me past the Admin Password prompt. (And besides, Microsoft says not to do that on an OEM-installed operating system. )Soon, the error message disappeared and turned into a reboot loop, going endlessly back and forth between the Dell screen and the Windows screen. I tried a Repair Installation and it looked like it was working but it just added a new screen to the loop that says: "Setup is being restarted."

It's the offending driver, fcdabios. Windows installs it and says it was installed successfully. Then the computer spontaneously reboots again. It seems to start alright back at the desktop but again reboots after 2 minutes. The only cure is to do a restore from a norton ghost image. Can't Get Rid Of Virus / Caused Hard Drive Damage

Feb 15, 2006

At the end of january, I was on the web and all of the sudden firefox shut down.My desktop background had been replaced with a blue background with a black box in the middle telling me I had a virus and needed to by some software to get rid of it. I was unable to change the desktop back ground. Also, I noticed that after this incident, there was a particular folder on my second hard drive (I have two total) that would crash windows explorer everytime I tried to open, or even moved my mouse cursor over it in "my computer". This particular folder contains several gigabytes of music, video, and pictures most of which is not backed up.I have also tried accessing the folder with a 3rd party file explorer program, and it crashes that program as well. After running several different spyware programs, I was able to get the blue screen with black box removed from my desktop background, but it has been replaced with an error message saying my active desktop has been disabled (even though I can't turn it on or off in the options menu) and I am still unable to change the background.

Slow Start Menu Caused By Invalid Shortcuts

Oct 9, 2008

I'll start with a bit of background so everyone doesn't suggest the usual tips for speeding up the start menu.I'm logged in as administrator and running XP and have had problems with the start menu - all programs list being stupidly slow to populate for a while, and no performance issues anywhere else. I've tried all the usual removing shadows, fade and slide; unchecking auto search for network folders and printers; fiddling with the menu order in the registry and checking there are no false entries, etc, etc, but with no joy.I then noticed in C:Documents and SettingsAdministratorStart MenuProgramsAccessories there are two invalid links to 'Tour Windows XP' and 'Windows Explorer', and whenever I get anywhere near this folder everything slows up, which suggests to me these are the problem (although I could be wrong).

When I try to delete these shortcuts I get 'Cannot delete Tour Windows XP: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)'. The location both shortcuts are pointing to is C:Documents and SettingsAdministratorStart MenuProgramsAccessories - so are these just pointing to themselves?I then went on to check C:Documents and SettingsDefault UserStart MenuProgramsAccessories and found both these shortcuts exist there as well, and are valid working shortcuts. Easy I thought, I can just copy these over to replace the invalid shortcuts and everything's fixed - but it asks me if I want to replace the existing file, and then says 'Cannot move Tour Windows XP: A file with the same name already exists. Specify a different name.'So I appear to be stuck with two invalid shortcuts in my menu that drive the processor mad anytime I go near them, and I can't delete, rename or point them at something else.
