Got a machine on the bench right now (Dell Dimension 3100, XPHE SP2) which shuts down Windows Explorer whenever I try and do a search. I just updated this machine to SP2 and have run SuperAntiSpyware (SAS) and CCleaner on it. There must be a conflict somewhere and I have no idea what files may be conflicting.

View 7 Replies View Relatedrecently installed trial version of panda av and uninstalled norton systemworks. my machine shuts down completely for no apparent reason at arbitrary times. the system powers off and i must turn the powerstrip on and off and then press the start button on my computer for it to respond.playing a video from Internet online (a golfing parrot, no less) search c: using explorer for "svchost.exe" run spybot s&d w/ latest enhancements av scan checked the event log, and find the error "7000, svchost.exe could not load security center: name, path, etc. might be incorrect." checked task manager and it indicates 3 instances of svchost.exe running. checked c:winntsystem32 using explorer and could not find "svchost.exe" did a search using explorer and it showed "svchost.exe" in c:winntsystem 32 as well as in one of the service pack uninstall folders just before the system shut down
View 10 Replies View RelatedI keep all of my digital photos in one folder. I have a few AVI files taken with the camera. If I navigate to a sub folder that contains one of these AVI files Explorer shuts down with a "Data Execution Prevention Error"
It does not happen if I run in safe mode.
I recently had a bout with spyware. I ran a full Malwarebytes scan and removed all the items it found. I restarted the computer like I was instructed to do and it booted up fine. explorer.exe shuts down about every minute or so and restarts. There's no error message or anything, just everything on my desktop disappears then re-appears. This only started happening today. It was working fine last night before I got hit with the spyware this morning. What could possibly be causing this and how do I fix it. My computer is basically useless in this condition
View 2 Replies View RelatedSince recently, whenever I insert a DVD/CD intomy DVD drive & try to browse it (via OPEN or EXPLORE) the DVD does open & I can see the icons/folders + other details, but within seconds, I get a box saying "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem...etc" & explorer shuts down & restarts. This happens only when I access my DVD drive. I'll be grateful for a solution., Here's the details from the Event Viewer , the last time it occurred (an hour ago).

I go to Start, Search, and then I select "All Files and Folders".I used to be able to type in the search words in "A word or phrase in the file", and then select a folder by going to "Look in", then Browse, and then I would select the folder there.
At the end of November, the folks over in the Security forum were kind enough to walk me through a huge problem I was having. My computer has never been better except for one small thing. my "search" function doesn't work. The little doggy is there and if I enter something and then ask it to search files and folders (or anything for that matter), it goes off to search and then nothing happens. Eventually I get the "Program not Responding" window and when I close it, my desktop blinks off for a second and then my Norton systray button is missing.It's weird and I'm sure I deleted something inadvertently while I was getting rid of that terrible trojan. I was just wondering if someone had a suggestion so that I could restore that function. If not, I'll leave it alone because I'm just happy to have my computer back to normal almost. I thought I was going to have to throw it away until those guys saved it for me.

I'm using WinXP Home. I don't turn off my machines but hibernate them instead. There's one machine that won't hibernate. I get the message "The device driver for the 'PCI Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP' device is preventing the machine from entering hibernation. Please close all applications and try again. View 13 Replies View RelatedAfter I updated to sp2 and other updates via auto update and went to WMP 10, I noticed that the new DVD+RW's I bought the other day are not excepting a format or allowing me to erase them. Out of the box they are initially recognized by XP Pro, then when formating with nero they lock up during finalizing and I have to reboot. At this point the disk, after reboot is not recognized and seems to be in an endless loop or check mode state. I have, I think , 6 damaged so far. I am afraid to experiment and thought RW disks could be at least erased and reused but XP can't see the RW media and this does not let me use any other app to erase or reformat. Any ideas or registry fixes out there?

It is staying on top of all open files and is waiting for me to approve the update.It reads this way: (Blue column to the left with an eye-shaped logo and the word Viewpoint. The white section to the right says: You have been Updated. Your Viewpoint Media Player was recently updated with the latest components to enhance your web viewing. A new browser update is recommended, including advanced pop-up blocking and graphically enhanced search. Then there is a clickable button saying "Update" Below that there is a note that says: Note: There is NO Restart required. It gives another clickable button that says More Info and a line that says Who is Viewpoint? This takes you to a description which includes the "fact" that they are a NASDAQ company that provides internet graphics and delivery technology to Fortune 500 companies including AOL, GE, GM, etc. This did not make me feel better.
