I had just finished some windows updates when I tried to go to my computer. when I do, it will sit there with that little moving flashlight, searching for files for several minutes, and then everything works, it doesn't hang up unless I go to my computer. Also, I can't manually put in an internet address at the internet explorer address bar because it doesn't seem to react when I hit the go button.

I have recently recieved a new computer, and I need to transfer the files of off my old computer. I know windows XP has a file transfer wizzard, but I don't have the serial cable it needs. Is it possible to transfer files from another computer using a USB cable, because I do have one of those. Whenever i want to open either windows explorer or just clik on My computer, the site appears with a very slow flashlight searching. It takes about a minute or so. I find this annoying. In the past whenever i tried to open MC or explorer, the drives would open up immediately.does anyone know why I keep getting this flashlight stigma and how to get to open MC or WE normally again?

I go to Start, Search, and then I select "All Files and Folders".I used to be able to type in the search words in "A word or phrase in the file", and then select a folder by going to "Look in", then Browse, and then I would select the folder there.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI went out of town for 2 weeks, came home and my pc is acting really strange. I've been getting tons of pop-ups, to the point my computer freezes and i must restart. Not only that but it randomly reboots itself even when not being used. Also, when i go to delete files now, the file does NOT go into the recycle bin. I looked at the settings and there is no check mark next to the "do not move files into recycle bin". My BF said he had been downloading things so I figured maybe its a virus or something. I ran Nortons... nothing. Ran AVG... nothing. A friend told me it sounded like spyware so he told me to run Adaware & Spybot. Did that, found a ton of stuff. But when i retarted the pc, it wanted to start in "safe mode". I noticed that most of these pop ups are (search miracle ??) Found info that its a trojan, but i dont know. . I dont know what to do, totally computer illiterate.

I've been using NTbackup, so the encryption is preserved, and all I get is "access denied" when trying to open them.What is the easiest way of decrypting them? I tried exporting the user certificate from the old pc using CIPHER /X, importing it to the new pc, but that didn't help. So how do I go about to decrypt these files? As it is nearly 50gigs of data and a slow network, I'd rather not decrypt the files and transfer them again.

I am using an Ubuntu live CD with GParted to attempt to resize the Windows one, but an error was given concerning there not being enough free space. I had a look around and found out that defragmenting might help.I did it a couple of times with the Windows defragger and once with Vopt. However, there are some "unmovable" files near the end of the disk which are probably causing the problems.Is there any way I can move these, so I can resize the partition?Attached is a screenshot from Vopt after defragging, the green blocks show unmovable files.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm using Windows XP Pro SP2 I have encountered what seems to be an undocumented feature of the file move action.I saved a web page including associated files from either IE7 or Firefox2.If I move the associated files folder to an other location the .htm file moves with it. Why? Who told it to do that? Where is the user configurable option for to link a file to a folder? Where is the global system behaviour option to enable this non standard file system behavior? If you move the associated files folder to an other location which happens to contain a .htm file with the same name (eg the very common index.htm file), the undocumented behaviour described above will still occur and the file will be overwritten without ANY standard file conflict warning and without any user choice in the matter.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI went through the automatic update this afternoon and installed multiple updates. It attempted to install SP3 which failed, every time. I went to shutdown my computer and it did the install update before shutdown and i pressed ok. It went to the logout screen and got stuck at installing update and windows will shutdown after update. Well it never shut down so i shut it down myself. Now my computer is working however EVERYTHING is working very sluggish. Ive attempted to system restore at multiple points and no luck. It all successfully restores and such but is now VERY SLOW

It includes the feature of scanning a bunch of documents on its own harddisk. To keep up a structure (Law-firm) we give the files structured names: {casenumber}{client}{typeofdoc}{dateofdoc}.pdf
So, by now we created a structured list of files in the scan-folder of the machine. The next step is to move the files into subfolders on a different pc. These subfolders have 6 digits, simply the case numbers. It should be very easy for a program to move these files paying attention to the case number and sorting them into the right case folders..................

View 6 Replies View RelatedIt keeps doing strange things. If you click on recent documents, it says they aren't there, but they are. If you click on a file, the program comes up, but the file won't open until you click it again. That's only a couple of examples. I've reloaded office and it didn't help. So I decided to reload XP. It says I have a newer version on my computer that what is on the disk and if I load it, I will lose files and programs. I'm assuming it's a newer version becuase of all the windows updates. I also keep getting SYS32 ? errors, plus run time errors.

All are Windows XP SP2 fully updated. But Computer #1 is Media Center Edition. Neither computer is password protected.When move PICTURES I then cannot view, move, copy or delete them. When moved/copied from camera, they are OK until I move them again. (Probably the same for non picture files.)When open a file from one computer on network, often cannot open it from a different computer - either way.
