View 4 RepliesI have installed win XP pro a couple of days ago, and I thought that it would be a good idea to put windows in a separate partition. Since then I have installed a few applications on a different partition, but it is not uncommon for applications to put something in the program files folder anyway Is there a safe and easy way of having "my documents" and or "program files" on a bigger partition? Or would that defeat the whole point of a system partition?
View 13 Replies View RelatedI just partitioned my new hard drive to five separate partitions: 1) OS and Program 2) documents, 3) photos, 4)MP3s and 5)movies. I was going to start moving documents into the second partition but have a question about what would be the best way to do this. Should I move the entire Documents and settings folder to the #2 partition? Or is it better to manually move the my documents files for each user to the #2 partition? I was planning on reassigning the appropriate softwares to store their files in partitions 3,4 and 5.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently downloaded and installed Apple QuickTime as a part of I-tunes.I-tunes installed in the directory I selected, but Quick Time installed in the program files directory without asking.I am low on space in this partition and want to move it. Norton used to have a utility to do this, but if it is in Systemworks 2004, I can't find it.I would also like to move some other programs.I can't just cut and paste because there are registry entries. Is there a utility for this?I am reluctant to edit the registry manually. Can I cut and paste and then rely on Norton's Win Doctor to find and fix the registry errors?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've had some trouble last week were I got the BSOD, due to some problem with the registry, I couldn't find a solution and so bought a new SATA hard drive and installed XP on it (as i couldn't reinstall it on my old one for fear of losing all my files etc). Now however, after moving all my files into the new harddrive (where XP now seems to be), I want to format the old C: drive but the computer management console isn't allowing me to as the "system" partition is still on the old C: drive. In short, is there anyway to move that partition to the new F: drive where the boot partition is?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI moved some EFS encrypted files to my new PC, but can't open them there. I've been using NTbackup, so the encryption is preserved, and all I get is "access denied" when trying to open them. What is the easiest way of decrypting them? I tried exporting the user certificate from the old pc using CIPHER /X, importing it to the new pc, but that didn't help. So how do I go about to decrypt these files? As it is nearly 50gigs of data and a slow network, I'd rather not decrypt the files and transfer them again.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to partition my hard disk which currently has a Windows partition on and a couple of other util. partitions. I am using an Ubuntu live CD with GParted to attempt to resize the Windows one, but an error was given concerning there not being enough free space. I had a look around and found out that defragmenting might help.I did it a couple of times with the Windows defragger and once with Vopt. However, there are some "unmovable" files near the end of the disk which are probably causing the problems. Is there any way I can move these, so I can resize the partition?Attached is a screenshot from Vopt after defragging, the green blocks show unmovable files.
View 11 Replies View RelatedI'm using Windows XP Pro SP2 I have encountered what seems to be an undocumented feature of the file move action.I saved a web page including associated files from either IE7 or Firefox2.If I move the associated files folder to an other location the .htm file moves with it. Why? Who told it to do that? Where is the user configurable option for to link a file to a folder? Where is the global system behaviour option to enable this non standard file system behavior? If you move the associated files folder to an other location which happens to contain a .htm file with the same name (eg the very common index.htm file), the undocumented behaviour described above will still occur and the file will be overwritten without ANY standard file conflict warning and without any user choice in the matter.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm searching for a good solution of archiving scanned documents. The problem: Recently we bought a new copy-machine from toshiba. It includes the feature of scanning a bunch of documents on its own harddisk. To keep up a structure (Law-firm) we give the files structured names: {casenumber}{client}{typeofdoc}{dateofdoc}.pdf
So, by now we created a structured list of files in the scan-folder of the machine. The next step is to move the files into subfolders on a different pc. These subfolders have 6 digits, simply the case numbers. It should be very easy for a program to move these files paying attention to the case number and sorting them into the right case folders..................
This is only on files on Acer (as far as I know) = Computer #1 where all data is stored for the three computers on a peer to peer network. All are Windows XP SP2 fully updated. But Computer #1 is Media Center Edition. Neither computer is password protected. When move PICTURES I then cannot view, move, copy or delete them. When moved/copied from camera, they are OK until I move them again. (Probably the same for non picture files.)When open a file from one computer on network, often cannot open it from a different computer - either way.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI had just finished some windows updates when I tried to go to my computer. when I do, it will sit there with that little moving flashlight, searching for files for several minutes, and then everything works, it doesn't hang up unless I go to my computer. Also, I can't manually put in an internet address at the internet explorer address bar because it doesn't seem to react when I hit the go button.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIt is frustrating having every program automatically install to program files, including minor things like audio attachment. I know I'll end up with tons and tons of folders in program files. Beyond that, I can't access program files from the other computers on the network. Is there a good way to reorganize/move files to my C drive in a way that would be efficient and wouldn't require reinstalling every single program in a different place?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI just built a new computer and installed Windows XP Pro with SP2 on it. When I set up my hard drive and OS, I partitioned my lone hard drive into three partitions: 10 Gb C: drive for Windows, drivers, etc., and a pair of 111 Gb drives for things like program installs. I noticed that my C: drive is filling up rather rapidly, and I discovered that Program FilesCommon Files is taking up a considerable amount of space. I would like to move this folder onto one of my bigger partitions, but I'm not sure how to do it without screwing up all my programs. Any direction on this matter (that doesn't involve re-partitioning and starting from scratch) would be appreciated.

I did not install windows, or format it, but when I rebooted windows, I cannot access it. It simply says. this disk is not formatted, would you like to format it now. I know of a way to recover the files, and copy to another disk, but as I am presently out of disk space, is there a way to fix the partition that was deleted. Hoping to do this cheaply. I might spend 15.00 for a program, but am shooting for a simple method
View 3 Replies View RelatedDid something really stupid the other day. Was doing a Windows install and I mistook a drive for a different drive. In short, I deleted the partition, recreated the partition, but I haven't reformatted yet. The partition was the same size before and after so that shouldn't be a problem. the files should still be there but I don't know how to get at them. I've already tried Recuva, UndeletePlus, Restoration, and a Knoppix boot disk but none of these were able to do anything because of the lack of a file system/boot sector.

Or prog that can check which of files from source folder (without subfolders) are same as files in destination folder (without subfolders) and mark them to delete or move or smooth
