I've had this problem for a few months, just lived with it. In the attached screen shots, you will see I have no folder trees in any of the pop up Add, Move, or Copy pop ups in Explorer and Windows Media Player. I have no clue if this can be restored to show again. This has happened before I upgraded Media Player so it shouldnt be that. I'm thinking Windows Corruption somewhere.

I have a copy of roxio media creator which doesn't work since I reset windows to an earlier point, the prog can't find a certificate and questions the system date so won't install. it won't delete either for the same reasons and every time I try to copy files it tries to install the damn thing, unsuccessfully
View 1 Replies View RelatedI cannot move any of the desktop icons.I cannot drag and drop any files, but copy and paste works.I cannot mouse click in between different programs many times and often have to use Alt-Tab to get around windows.Since this has shown up, I reformatted and installed Windows at least 10 times. I've run numerous virus and spyware programs and found the system to be clean.

Why can't Windows accept this file?
Ive got a file on my desktop I cant Move, or Delete. Ive tried using Other Software, doesnt work,Says filename is Invalid. I cant rename the file, the context menu for the file is different than any other file, removing the Rename, Delete, and everything Useful... I cant open the File, btw was supposed to be a picture... Ive tried that technique you can use to rename a file, by clicking once on it selecting it, then clicking on the filename again, but beeps as if it was invalid. I have also tried safe mode, which also failed...
I am looking for a way to access and move a file without booting Windows. The reason is that I am a collossal idiot and accidentally moved a .dll file that is used by winlogon.exe and now I need to move it back.
View 8 Replies View RelatedIf I select several files (mp3 or movies) and click Play Selection or Play All, I get the 'move file' box popping up on the screen. When I press cancel it pops up again, and I must click cancel one more time, before my files start playing as they should.Does anyone have a clue how to fix this annoying problem?

When I go to move certain .avi movie files on my hard drive from one directory to another, I get an error message that says: Error Moving File, It is being used by another person or program. The problem is, I don't know of any other programs using it. All my media players are closed. How can I find out what process is using it? This computer has only 1 log in (me) so it is not another person.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm in the process of repair/recovery of my machine (Dell Inspiron 8500 with Windows XP Home, Service Pack 2). I'm following exactly the instructions in:
http://attachments.techguy.org/attac...chmentid=62075, but a problem has developed. The "software" file (which is the file that the original blue screen error message says is "corrupt, absent or not writable") will not copy to the new tmp directory to create the backup. My understanding from the article is that this backup file (software.bak) will later be used to restore correct settings for various software applications. Since I can't copy it, it appears that I am screwed,
What I want to do is create a .bat that will copy a file to several locations(all within the same folder, however with different names).
I have a folder that contains the master copy of my db and I want to run the batch file to update the users db files. The reason being is they each use thier own front end.
I usually backup my weeks work on Friday afternoons. What I do is run a "search" for all files created or modified within the last 7 days and then "copy" all relevant files to a folder on an external hard drive, and then burn a CD.
Everynow and then, I get the following message. "Cannot Copy File: Cannot Read From the Source File or Disk"
I do get the error-message, "while trying to finish a dowloald and after it reached 100% and tries to write the file on the harddrive"
cannot copy file: Cannot read from the source file or disk
I've got Windows XP home and two external hard drives (connected via USB) and I'm trying to give one or both of those drives paging files. My hard-drives are an I-Omega 500GB and a Maxtor 300GB, both with plenty of room. I want to set my paging file to 650MB.I know how to change the size of a paging file. I go to System advanced performance...etc to get to the virtual memory box, I set the paging-file sizes for the external drives (remembering to press SET) then reboot. When the computer has restarted I run a disc analysis, but the external drives have no paging file.I notice that many people move their paging file to an external drive, so why isn't it working for me?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop running XP pro and whenever I try to rename, move or delete a file in explorer, DRWatson(kind soul that he is), pops up to tell me that he has encountered a problem and he needs to close. He then gives me the option to send an error report to microsoft. After sending numerous copies of these error reports to bill and not recieving anything in return, I thought it was about time I tried someone else. This is how I came upon this excellent site and after reading some of the posts, I am hopefull that there is a knowledgeable person on board who will be able to help me. The error report from DrWatson is below. If anyone can understand it and knows what the problem is, please let me know because at the moment I cannot do anything with my files or folders and it is driving me mad. The error report says:

When I try to download files, e.g drivers, pdf's from certain sites using my work PC , which is running XP Pro service pack 2, I often get a message saying 'done' but when I go to the location where I saved the file , the resultant file does not work , and hovering the mouse pointer over it, displays 0 bytes! On getting home from work I try to download the same file on my PC at home which is XP Pro but (assiduously ) non -service pack 2 and it/they download straight away and work.
using Mozilla firefox as my default browser. I have developed a problem wherein when I click on the x in the upper right corner, or the minus sign or the enlarge box, I get no response. I can still easily shut firefox down through File> exit or through task manager (end Task) but not throughthe upper right signs. I uninstalled firefox 1.5 which I had been using and installed firefox 2.0 but the same things happen.
View 8 Replies View RelatedRestored entire pc as a result of spyware and adware. It's quick and clean, and I've never had a problem doing it before. I restored to Win98SE, then upgraded to XP Home, then downloaded Service Pack 2. Everything went smoothly. Then, tried to add Fax Service. First of all, it tells me to load the XP cd; then it says it can't find a .dll file it needs; continue without it? Yes. The job completes, but then I discover that IE and OE have disappeared. Back to "add windows components". Check IE and OE. Run the job and it ends "successfully". Check Fax, and it's gone, but IE and OE are back (with all the settings I had done after SP2). Does anyone have any idea what's going on here?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI reecently installed Vista on my computer to try it out and after a few weeks wanted to change back to XP Pro as has some things i did not like.
Here's what i did:
1. I booted into BIOS and changed the bootup to cd/dvd.
2. Booted with my Original CP PRO cd (Not bought with my computer bought after).
3. followed the instructions and deleted the partition on C and formatted (Full not Quick) the C: drive with NTFS.
It gets to the stage that the SETUP is copying files and after 43% and says it cannot copy file WOWEB.exe and to press Esc to skip, F3 to QUIT and ENTER to try again.
It does this with a whole lot of files (Over 30) then after skipping thise files it reboots and gets the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH!!!.
I have 2 DVD drives and tried both with the same result. I tried a differant Windows XP disk with the same results.
The motherboard has a backup facility which i had backed up previously with XP but not fully and can restore to that point but i want a complete reinstall.
I have formatted and installed windows XP with that disc loads of times without any problems before.
what should i do?
I am reformatting and reinstalling Windows XP Home in my dell inspiron 600m and I got the following error during the installation:
Setup cannot copy the file vga.dll.
Anyone know how to fix it? What happens if I choose to ignore the warning and install the Windows anyway?
Can someone please tell me how to copy and save a ADOBE PDF file?
View 8 Replies View RelatedIn trying to copy a set of files that look to be in ascending sort order from a hard disk directory to a USB thumb drive, XP copies the last few, then starts at the beginning down to where it started. Eg. if in order as 01,02,03,04, 23,24 , XP will copy 23, 24, then 01,02,03 etc. until all the files are copied. This screws up any opportunity of getting these files in sequential order on the USB device. I tried copying this way, deleting the out of order ones and copying the rest in sequence only to have XP do the same thing. This file copy method must be a way of efficiently copying files but it sure messes up the order of files on the USB device.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI had this working last year, but now I can't seem to search content in files. I go to Start, Search, and then I select "All Files and Folders".I used to be able to type in the search words in "A word or phrase in the file", and then select a folder by going to "Look in", then Browse, and then I would select the folder there.
Had to reformat my drive and now whenever i use my win xp sp2 install disc...i first format the drive and create the proper partition..the windows disc then starts copying files to the computer but at a point i get an error message saying that windows setup cannot copy the file...and it tells me which file. I redid this several times and each time at a some point in the copying it gives me this error...each time with a different file name
What should i do at this stage?
I've got a message popped up that says I need to install XP service pack 3.
I let it install, but it gets stcuk on the following error:
"Setup cannot copy the file wscsvc.dll"
It gives the path for the file as:
c:windowssystem32
I've checked in the path and the file definitely exists.
The message below the error says:
"Ensure that the location specifield below is correct, or change it and insert 'Windows XP System Files'in the drive you specify"
This message does not make much sense to me.
Is there a particular application running that could be stopping access to this file?
I've tried closing down all applications: but still no joy.
What am I doing wrong?
