I am looking for a way to access and move a file without booting Windows. The reason is that I am a collossal idiot and accidentally moved a .dll file that is used by winlogon.exe and now I need to move it back.
View 8 RepliesIve got a file on my desktop I cant Move, or Delete. Ive tried using Other Software, doesnt work,Says filename is Invalid. I cant rename the file,the context menu for the file is different than any other file, removing the Rename, Delete, and everything Useful... I cant open the File, btw was supposed to be a picture... Ive tried that technique you can use to rename a file, by clicking once on it selecting it, then clicking on the filename again, but beeps as if it was invalid. I have also tried safe mode, which also failed...
If I select several files (mp3 or movies) and click Play Selection or Play All, I get the 'move file' box popping up on the screen. When I press cancel it pops up again, and I must click cancel one more time, before my files start playing as they should.Does anyone have a clue how to fix this annoying problem?

When I go to move certain .avi movie files on my hard drive from one directory to another, I get an error message that says: Error Moving File, It is being used by another person or program.The problem is, I don't know of any other programs using it. All my media players are closed. How can I find out what process is using it? This computer has only 1 log in (me) so it is not another person.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI've got Windows XP home and two external hard drives (connected via USB) and I'm trying to give one or both of those drives paging files. My hard-drives are an I-Omega 500GB and a Maxtor 300GB, both with plenty of room. I want to set my paging file to 650MB.I know how to change the size of a paging file. I go to System advanced performance...etc to get to the virtual memory box, I set the paging-file sizes for the external drives (remembering to press SET) then reboot. When the computer has restarted I run a disc analysis, but the external drives have no paging file.I notice that many people move their paging file to an external drive, so why isn't it working for me?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop running XP pro and whenever I try to rename, move or delete a file in explorer, DRWatson(kind soul that he is), pops up to tell me that he has encountered a problem and he needs to close. He then gives me the option to send an error report to microsoft. After sending numerous copies of these error reports to bill and not recieving anything in return, I thought it was about time I tried someone else. This is how I came upon this excellent site and after reading some of the posts, I am hopefull that there is a knowledgeable person on board who will be able to help me. The error report from DrWatson is below. If anyone can understand it and knows what the problem is, please let me know because at the moment I cannot do anything with my files or folders and it is driving me mad. The error report says:

My computer displays this message when booting up:Code: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:WINDOWSSYSTEM32CONFIGSYST EMYou can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM.Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.The only disk I can think it is refering to is the Operating System disk. It had an option for an automated repair thing but then it asked for a floppy disk - I didn't have one. When if finally came to the window with an option to repair the system, I hit 'r' It then said there was no hard drive available and could not proceed with the repair.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently reformated my machine with XP, now when i boot it up it has the option to boot to WIndows XP Professional listed twice and it counts down from 30. I did a search for the boot file and found it and change the time to 3 seconds and deleted the second entry of XP. But still nothing changes and still has the otpion of booting to XP twice and counts down from 30. Maybe i change the wrong file. Does anyone know the exact file name and ext. to chang ethis option.

View 16 Replies View RelatedUnfortunately my PC got a virus which corrupted (amongst others) my wininet.dll file. My virus software quarantined all the infected files, but wininet.dll is needed to run explorer.exe. I have tried to recover a previous copy of wininet.dll but it is corrupt and now every time I try to turn on my PC (even in safe mode with command prompt, it crashes when it tries to load up this file). I have lost my boot disk and have no way of deleting the wininet.dll file (which would at least let windows run). how to I can delete the corrupt file?

"Auto Arrange" is not checked. I have tried with "Align to Grid" both on and off. "Lock Web Items on Desktop" is not checked.

View 5 Replies View Relatedim running XP. for some reason lately, i've noticed since my family changed ISP's, that my computer temporarily freezes. Like I'd be running 2 IE's, and I'm switching to the other browser, when the screen freezes - but I can move the mouse. It freezes for around a minute to a few minutes, but I can move the mouse. I go to click on eg the Start button, go back to the browser i was originally on, etc. Only after the screen temporarily freezes does the start menu come up at around the same time the browsers switch from one to another. how do i fix this? it's REALLY annoying. it doesn't only happen on my computer, but on my parents' computer as well. the funny thing is that it doesnt happen to my bros computer.

I've dug thru just about everything I could find to see if I could get this mouse to respond when I move it. But so far nothing.
