I am currently using a Dell Inspiron 8600 running Windows XP(if you need more details, just say so)a few days ago, I needed some more room on my hard drive, so i started uninstalling some old programs and games I hadn't used in a while, and while I was in the "add or remove programs" anyway, I uninstalled a few things that haven't been used since I got the computer almost three years ago.

Went to run Adaware....its completely gone...deleted...poof! I swear I didn't do it. How and what has the capabilities of deleting programs? Im running Spyware Doctor and so far its discovered 1 infection.
In xp, can you delete something from the all programs list but not delete it from your computer?

View 12 Replies View RelatedAll of a sudden both my CD-ROM and CD-RW drives are acting strangely. They are both acting the same, so it seems a Windows problem (XP Home). When i put in a CD of any type after a restart, it works fine. The next CD I put in shows up in Explorer labelled exactly like the first one, and if it has an autoplay function, it calls up the same menu as the first one. I've tried numerous CDs of several types and the same thing appens.
Example, a game CD starts the game like always. Eject the CD, put in a program install CD and the game menu comes up. Of course, if I try to play the game with the wrong CD, it says my files are corrupt or missing. Another example, one game will autoplay its start menu (if it's the first one after restart), but when I go through the game setup menu, it tells me to put the correct CD in the drive (and it is in there already).
I've tried several solutions to no avail including uninstall and reinstall the drives--System Restore won't let me restore because the last point was on a Windows Update

View 3 Replies View RelatedI shut down my computer by holding down the power button, instead of waiting for windows to close the open programs and shut down properly When I got back, I turned the computer on, and the boot process was severely messed up. After the animated black Windows XP screen, it goes black for a few minutes, then the blue screen that says 'windows is starting up' (or something similar) appears, but stays for another 5 or so minutes. Then, the 'Welcome' blue screen comes up but stays for even longer. When Windows finally loads, the wallpaper loads, then the desktop icons (note programs' correct icons don't show, only window default 'exe' icon), then the task bar, but the task bar remains white and only has the start button, quick launch and clock no other icons show.It stays like this indefinitely, with the CPU light flashing and the computer seemingly loading. I left it on all night and it got no further.When in that state, anything I click on (including ctrl-alt-del) takes about 5+ minutes to do.I tried safe mode - it took so long to load I gave upI tried ERD Commander - not even that would load past a blank screen with a cursor.I tried booting from the Windows CD - the reinstall option isn't there and it doesn't spot the previous installation.I am using Windows XP Home SP2.Is there a solution or do I have to format and reinstall?

using Mozilla firefox as my default browser. I have developed a problem wherein when I click on the x in the upper right corner, or the minus sign or the enlarge box, I get no response. I can still easily shut firefox down through File> exit or through task manager (end Task) but not throughthe upper right signs. I uninstalled firefox 1.5 which I had been using and installed firefox 2.0 but the same things happen.

I restored to Win98SE, then upgraded to XP Home, then downloaded Service Pack 2. Everything went smoothly. Then, tried to add Fax Service. First of all, it tells me to load the XP cd; then it says it can't find a .dll file it needs; continue without it? Yes. The job completes, but then I discover that IE and OE have disappeared. Back to "add windows components". Check IE and OE. Run the job and it ends "successfully". Check Fax, and it's gone, but IE and OE are back (with all the settings I had done after SP2). Does anyone have any idea what's going on here?

My Standard Account got reset for the 2nd time. Firstly, when I didn't use my account for 4 days once I came to log on I realised that 'Personalized Settings' was showing up at the top left hand corner. This came again after I didn't use the account for one day. By reset I mean, the background wallpaper reset to default and the desktop folders not showing up. But when I went into 'Documents and Settings' in my administrator account (which didn't get reset), all the folders were showing up in my C Drive/Documents and Settings/ folder. Once I right-clicked on a folder on my system when this happened for the first time, my system froze. The system also froze when opening any file. This started happening a few weeks after I had installed COMODO Firewall which might be a coincidence even though I don't think it is but all these error messages/dialog box popped up on my account, roughly like 'Invalid or corrupt jarfile...' but on the administrator account none of these errors showed up when this happened on my account. In addition, this issue also happened when I changed my account from Standard to Administrator but this didn't change anything. When this happened for the first time, to solve the issue I made a new account and then copied all my files/folders over from my old account to the new one but because this problem has happened again, I predict that this will keep on happening again on every new account I make. I have also run malware scans which didn't detect any viruses.
I remember from within the last month using a cmd line tool in XP which basically scrubs the unused portions of the hd by doing a 3 pass write of 0s and 1s on the drive. Problem is I forgot the file name. Anyone know it off hand?

I have 2 internal hard drives and am running a dual boot with 98SE on the C drive and the K drive has the XP Pro. C drive was partitioned at the outset of dual booting and has drives E through H. Drive K which has XP Pro is beginning to fill and in fact, I currently have only 4 gigs available for use. Now the question: can I move some of the unused gigs in drives G and H to the K drive?? Oh, 98SE is FAT32 and Pro has NTFS formatting. If the answer is yes then, of course, I will need to know how. And as usual, TIA.

And then it appears as a "Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC", whereas I actually have a D-Link DFE-538TX 10/100 adapter. Furthermore, I get no icons (at all) in the Network Communications window. So if I want to change any settings of my LAN, for example, I can't, because I can't select the LAN icon or right-click on it. The LAN is working though. The current driver for the Realtek adapter which is listed is a MS driver.

View 11 Replies View RelatedRecently I noticed that my "C" partition, which ONLY has the "XP Pro" OS and a few related programs on it, has gone from 50% UNUSED space down to 35%. I have not added anything, except MS automatic downloads. There was one a week or so ago that seemed large. Could that be the cause of the increase? Are there files that 'grow' unnoticed that can be removed?I understand that once the "C" disk (partition) is filled beyond 50%, "XP" progressively slows down. I do not want that to happen, and purposely created a partition twice as large as the size of "XP." If necessary, I could increase the size of the "C" partition.
